Power Trip‘s 2019 tour supporting High on Fire was one of their last outings before the tragic passing of frontman Riley Gale.
Heavy Consequence attended one of the final dates on that tour, a late November show in Brooklyn, and got to witness the captivating power Gale possessed onstage. Less than a year later, Gale died at the young age of 34.

During our recent interview with High on Fire, we asked Matt Pike and company what it was like touring with Gale and Power Trip. Not only did they sing the highest of praises, but they also would be more than willing to play some shows with the freshly reunited Power Trip.
“Riley was a one of a kind dude — he was a Bon Scott of punk rock,” said Pike, referencing the late AC/DC icon. “And I thought he was a little shit...

The surviving members of Power Trip reunited to play their first live gig since the tragic 2020 passing of singer Riley Gale. The surprise show happened on Friday night (December 1st) at the club Mohawk in Austin, Texas.
The advertised concert featured a headlining performance by Fugitive, a band featuring Power Trip guitarist Blake Ibanez and Scourge vocalist Seth Gilmore. After Fugitive played their initial set, Ibanez and Gilmore remained onstage, and were joined by Power Trip members Nick Stewart (guitar), Chris Whetzel (bass), and Chris Ulsh (drums).
With Gilmore on vocals, they played five Power Trip songs, including “Soul Sacrifice,” “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe),” “Hornet’s Nest,” “Manifest Decimation,” and “Crucifixation.”
The poster for the show had mentioned a “special guest,” but the performance must have been a welcome surprise for anyone in attendance. Footage from the gig shows the fans going absolutely wild during the mini Power Trip set.

The surviving members of the Dallas thrash act Power Trip staged a surprise reunion Friday for the first time since the death of the band’s frontman Riley Gale in August 2020.
Fugitive, led by Power Trip guitarist Blake Ibanez, was the headliner Friday at Austin’s Mohawk, though a “special guest” was promised on the gig’s flyer. That ended up being the surviving members of Power Trip — Ibanez, guitarist Nick Stewart, bassist Chris Whetzel, and drummer Chris Ulsh — who took the stage together for a five-song set.

Power Trip’s 2018 live recording Live in Seattle stands as the definitive document of the thrash band in the concert setting. Previously released digitally in 2020, the full set is getting a proper vinyl, CD, and digital release on June 23rd via Southern Lord.
The 11-song performance took place at Neumos venue on May 28th, 2018, in Seattle while Power Trip were on tour supporting their 2017 album Nightmare Logic. The band would play four songs from the LP in Seattle, including the instant classic “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe)” — a teaser for which can be streamed below.
The Dark Operative imprint went on to release Live in Seattle as a digital Bandcamp download in June of 2020 during pandemic lockdowns. Tragically, Power Trip frontman Riley Gale passed away just months later on August 24th. The Texas band has been on hiatus ever since, though one member has gone on to form the group Fugitive.
