Exclusive: Netflix will not be proceeding with a second season of The Brothers Sun, the action comedy-drama from Glee and American Horror Story co-creator Brad Falchuk and newcomer Byron Wu.
The news comes almost two months after the eight-episode first season of the series starring Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien, Sam Song Li, Joon Lee and Highdee Kuan was released on January 4.
The Brothers Sun launched to critical praise, with reviewers hailing Oscar winner Yeoh’s standout performance. The show spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at No. 2, but it couldn’t find a large audience. Its performance was modest by Netflix standards, with its number of weekly views staying below 7 million and slipping under 2 million for its last two weeks in the Top 10.

What would you do if you discovered that your once-ordinary life was built on the foundation of one of Taiwan’s largest (and successful) organized crime families? Netflix’s crime comedy The Brothers Sun runs the gamut and the streets of the San Gabriel Valley for answers. Co-created by Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk, the eight-episode series follows the Sun family matriarch, Eileen Sun (Michelle Yeoh), who, after falling in love with a “country boy,” became second in command to one of the most lucrative and dangerous gangster businesses in Taiwan. Because of the potential threats on her family, she decides to spare her youngest son, Bruce (Sam Song Li), from the violent family business and moves with him to Los Angeles while leaving her older son, Charles (Justin Chien), back in Taiwan with his father (Johnny Kou) who turned him into a cutthroat assassin.

“Looking for Alaska” is told through the perspective of teen Miles “Pudge” Halter, as he enrolls in a boarding school to try to gain a deeper understanding of life. He meets Alaska Young, a student who he falls in love with while she guides him through his personal “labyrinth of suffering” throughout the school year. When Alaska unexpectedly dies, Miles must work through his grief as he and his other close friends work to uncover the truth behind Alaska’s death.
The project has gone through many incarnations since Schwartz first received the then-unpublished manuscript for “The Fault in Our Stars” author’s debut novel in 2005, with former Paramount Pictures boss Gail Berman originally purchasing the rights for Schwartz to write and potentially direct a feature and Paramount TV president Amy Powell helping to move the project from the feature division to TV.
The limited series marks Schwartz and Savage’s second project at the streaming service, along with “Marvel’s Runaways,” which was renewed for a Season 2.

NBC has tweaked the title of its upcoming drama Odyssey less than a month before its premiere, renaming the show American Odyssey.
Though the network declined to comment on what spurred the name change, sources close to the production say the new title better reflects the arduous journey of protagonist Odelle (Anna Friel), an American soldier beset by enemies on all sides as she attempts to return to her friends and family in New York.
Of course, the more cynical answer is that NBC execs weren’t living under a rock in January, when American Sniper stormed the box office and racked up Oscar nominations. Renaming the show American Odyssey may make the series more palatable to the same right-leaning audiences that sent Sniper soaring.

Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has landed the role of Col. Roger Charles in Truth, the story of the scandal that ended the careers of veteran CBS newsman Dan Rather and 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes. The film stars Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett in those two roles, with James Vanderbilt directing his script. Film starts shooting this week. Elizabeth Moss also signed on.
Quaid’s character served two tours in Vietnam, then in the Pentagon before becoming a liaison working with 60 Minutes II. He was invaluable in working with Mapes when she broke the blockbuster scandalous news story of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib. On the heels of that triumph, Charles chased the rumor that then-President George W. Bush had ducked serving in Vietnam after he graduated Yale in 1968 and instead got a cushy gig in the National Guard because of the clout of his father, who was an ambassador at the time.

Redford is attached to play former CBS News anchor Dan Rather with Blanchett as his producer Mary Mapes.

The Killing is created and executive-produced by Veena Sud. Mikkel Bondesen is executive producer for Fabrik Entertainment. Kristen Campo also serves as co-executive producer for Fabrik. “The Killing” is produced by Fox Television Studios for Netflix. Based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen, The Killing follows various murder investigations led by homicide detectives “Sarah Linden” (Mireille Enos) and “Stephen Holder” (Joel Kinnaman). Seasons one and two chronicled the “Rosie Larsen case,” with Linden and Holder investigating the murder of a teenage girl. Picking up one year after the close of that investigation, season three followed the detectives on their search for a runaway girl, leading them to discover a gruesome string of murders that connected to a previous investigation by...

In the wake of its success with The Blacklist this season, NBC has given series orders to a trio of intrigue-heavy political-tinged dramas that bring Katherine Heigl, Anna Friel, and Hope Davis into prime-time.
First up is Allegiance, a show that will remind some of FX’s The Americans, except it’s set in present day. The show stars Scott Cohen (Necessary Roughness) and Davis (The Newsroom) as deactivated covert Russian spies living in America (full descriptions below).
Then there is State of Affairs, which returns former Grey’s Anatomy star Heigl to series TV. This one is about a...

With executive producers/writers Larry Charles, Matt Nix, Ben Wexler, and Billy Crystal, FX‘s new sit-com order for The Comedians should be about the closest thing television has to a slam dunk. Add Josh Gad to the cast, and build it off of something we already know is a pretty solid format, and it looks like FX has the next great show locked up.
Having just announced a 13-episode order based on the Swedish show of the same name, this is one you’re going to hear about a lot in the future, and by the time it rolls around, a lot of people are going to be pretty excited for this one. It’s one thing to build a new version of a show that is, reportedly, already a strong series, but it’s quite another to throw in a mix of Arrested Development, Burn Notice, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Update 12:30 Pm: FX just confirmed the series pickup of The Comedians, which has received a 13-episode order and will begin production later this year for a 2015 launch. Related: 2014 FX Pilots Previous Exclusive: Billy Crystal is returning to primetime. There is no official word, but I have learned that FX has picked up half-hour pilot The Comedians, toplined by the actor-comedian, to series. The Comedians, based on the 2004 Swedish series Ulveson And Herngren, stars Crystal as a superstar veteran comedian who is reluctantly paired with a younger, edgier comic (Josh Gad) for a late-night comedy sketch show. The project hails from an all-star creative team. Curb Your Enthusiasm and Borat‘s Larry Charles directed the pilot from a script he co-wrote with Crystal, Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, and Ben Wexler. The four executive produce with Mikkel Bondesen and Henrik Bastin of Fabrik Entertainment for Fox TV Studios. Carl Molinder...

You all remember The Killing right? The AMC show that infuriated people at the close of its first season by not revealing the killer and instead choosing to stretch that storyline out for a whole other season. Then, once that second season concluded and the killer was finally revealed, it was cancelled. Just when it seemed all hope was lost, the combined efforts of Fox, AMC, and Netflix brought it back to life for a third season. However at the completion of that third season the show was, you guessed it, cancelled once more.
The Killing apparently has more legs than we gave it credit for because Netflix has just bought the show back again for a fourth and final (we’ll see if that sticks) season of six episodes. The new season will be available solely on Netflix and while there isn’t a date given for its release,...

Titus Welliver ("Sons of Anarchy," "Lost") is set to play Hieronymus 'Harry' Bosch in Amazon's first drama pilot "Bosch".
The series is based on the nearly two dozen novels by Michael Connelly about the veteran L.A.P.D. homicide detective.
Bosch also shares a link with defense attorney Mickey Haller, a character played by Matthew McConaughey in last year's Connelly adaptation "The Lincoln Lawyer".
Connelly and "Treme" co-creator Eric Overmeyer penned the pilot script and will executive produce alongside Henrik Bastin and Mikkel Bondesen.
