In 2021, in the months leading to the release of "Space Jam: A New Legacy," the New York Times published an editorial which said cartoon character Pepé Le Pew "normalized rape culture." In that same piece, the author also wrote that Speedy Gonzales had friends who "helped popularize the corrosive stereotype of the drunk and lethargic Mexicans."
In recent years, "Looney Tunes" stopped featuring rifles in new portrayals of Elmer Fudd, so why couldn't change its portrayal of Pepé Le Pew or Speedy, too? While France did nothing to defend Le Pew, Latinos in the U.S. and across Latin America jumped at the chance to defend Speedy Gonzales from never saying "Ándale! Ándale! Arriba! Arriba!" again. Comedian Gabriel Iglesias, who voiced Speedy in "Space Jam 2," defended the character on social media.
Few would argue that the character isn't racist or an outdated stereotype, but Speedy still engenders passionate love...

On the night of January 24, 2023, in Mississippi, six members of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office kicked in the front door of a house without a warrant.
For an hour and a half, these Mississippi officers — members of the self-named Goon Squad — tortured two Black men, Eddie Parker and Michael Jenkins. These officers used stun guns on the men repeatedly while yelling racial slurs. They beat them with their fists and batons, and abused them with a sex toy. And then one of the cops shoved his gun in Mr.

As someone who grew up in Texas back in the late 1980s, when “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” takes place, I can assure you: The last thing any closeted Southern teen wants is to stand out. Now’s as good a time as any for the world to discover Aristotle and Dante — not the Greek philosopher and the “Divine Comedy” author, but the title characters of Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s beloved YA novel. Imagine...

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) was openly critical of his own party’s leadership for portraying undocumented immigrants as the enemy. Appearing on Face the Nation, the congressman accused House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of “demonizing” those who enter the country without proper documentation.
“You’ve got… Kevin McCarthy on one side that is demonizing those that come over illegally,” Gonzales told host Margaret Brennan on Sunday. But he criticized Democrats as well, saying, “You’ve got Chuck Schumer on the other side in the Senate that makes it a morally good...
