In the never-ending attempt to bring ever greater spectacle to the Las Vegas Strip, Wynn Las Vegas is the latest resort working to up the ante. Today, it announced a new show, Awakening, that will open on Nov. 7.
Not only will the production include narration by Anthony Hopkins, but Awakening — with a creative team that includes multiple Emmy and Tony Award winners — will also be presented in a custom-built theater in the round that features a 60-foot stage with 80-foot ceilings. The resort describes that stage as “prismatic,” thanks to it being made from dichroic glass as well as LED screens.
“The show had to be on a Las Vegas scale — bigger and more over the top,” Baz Halpin, the show’s director and a producer tells The Hollywood Reporter. He details that thanks to the design of the 360-degree theater, “As an audience member,...

The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics officially kick off Friday (Feb. 7) with the opening ceremony, which is being held in the 40,000-seat Fisht Olympic Stadium (pictured above). NBC's Meredith Vieira says the ceremony will "present historic and modern-day Russia to the world," as she interviews George Tsypin, the production designer for the ceremony.
"I've done big shows but this is something else. It's truly mind-boggling," says Tsypin. "Of course, that ambition that comes from the Russians is to create the biggest show ever because they say, 'We're a big country, we have to do it.'"
"I had to think about what makes Russia unique, and I think what makes it unique is the fact that Russians know how to dream," Tsypin continues. "We need to look at the history of Russia almost as a series of dreams."
Information is scarce about the actual performances scheduled for the opening ceremony, but based...

Playbill.com has reported that a settlement between Julie Taymor and the producers of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark may have reached a settlement deal regarding her attachment to the musical.
The suit began when, in November 2011, Taymor filed a suit against the show’s producers, saying the producers “violated her creative rights and did not compensate her for her work on the musical.”
The producers responded to this suit with a suit of their own — this time citing a breach of contract, stating that Taymor refused “to fulfill her contractual obligations, declaring that she could not and would not do the jobs that she was contracted to do.”
A jury trial had been scheduled for early 2013, but this settlement, the terms of which were not disclosed, negates the need for such a trial. That said, however, “a document filed August 30 in the U.

The 2012 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by Kristin Chenoweth and Jim Parsons, with the musicals leading the pack. "Once" -- adapted from the popular indie film -- came out on top with 11 nominations, The Gershwins' "Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It," both also musicals, trailed close behind with 10 a piece, and "Follies" and "Newsies" took a respectable eight each.
"Peter and the Starcatcher" picked up nine nominations, the most for a play, edging out this year's closest thing to a favorite, Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman," which gained seven. Philip Seymour Hoffman predictably earned a nod for his turn as Willy Loman in "Salesman," alongside fellow big names James Earl Jones ("The Best Man") and John Lithgow ("The Columnist"). Ricky Martin's divisive portrayal of Che in "Evita" got no love. "Evita," however, did snatch three nods, including one for best revival of a musical.

Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark made its official debut last night after overcoming months of delays, media ridicule, and the departure of original director Julie Taymor. But now the $70 million musical, which got a creative overhaul during a three week hiatus last month, faces its biggest challenge yet: Winning over the critics who widely panned it back in February. So how did it go over?
Generally, critics are responding positively to the show’s major changes, which include a streamlined plot, more aerial action, and reworked songs. A few reviews even sound like mild recommendations, giving the musical...

With all the trouble the "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" mega-musical has had getting off the ground, it's worth noting that the project's latest premiere date is fast approaching. And while we still don't know much about the musical's storyline or what sort of look and feel to expect from the production, we did receive a peek at some early concept art for one of the sets today.
Posted over at The L Magazine, the photo below is reported to be an early rendering of the Oscorp Labs set created by designer George Tsypin.
According to the site, the photo appeared on website for the show's press manager, O & M Co (though I can't seem to find it there now).
