TORONTO -- As MIPTV gets under way, Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment on Monday said it has hired two veteran consultants to secure international co-production partners in Europe and Asia for its Nelvana Studios cartoon division.
Toronto-based Corus recruited former Telemagination managing director Marion Edwards, based in London, to comb Europe for production partners, while Singapore-based Derek Reeves will do the same in the Asia-Pacific market.
"These two regions (Europe and Asia) are our main focus, and we need someone on the ground to ensure we're scouting for new content, and working with producers in the region to ensure a true presence," Corus Kids vp international Irene Weibel said.
Both consultants will work for Nelvana on a non-exclusive basis. A veteran animation producer, Marion Edwards operates her own company, Red & Blue Prods. Before that, she was managing director of Telemagination, the 2-D animation studio.
Edwards will first manage for Nelvana the Canada/France co-production "Willa's Wildlife", comprising 52 11-minute episodes based on "Oswald" creator Dan Yaccarino's book "An Octopus Followed Me Home".
Derek Reeves, who co-founded Limelight Studios in New Zealand, will oversee "The Future Is Wild", a 3-D CG-animation Canada/Singapore co-production based on the Animal Planet special of the same name.

SYDNEY --The premiere in Australia of CBS drama Jericho within hours of its U.S. bow is likely to be the first of many similar day-and-date launches internationally as studios and broadcasters move to thwart illegal Internet downloads of hit shows ahead of their local broadcasts overseas. In a first for the territory, Jericho bowed last week and won its slot on Network Ten just eight hours after its premiere on CBS. Media buyers and rival network executives say they are reserving their judgment on whether it was a successful strategy -- but the consensus is that it's likely to set a precedent for more simultaneous releases both in Australia and in the U.K. "We have talked about this to a number of our clients," Marion Edwards, executive vp international at 20th Century Fox Television Distribution, said in an interview Monday. "The obvious big advantage is in countering piracy over the Internet of many shows that are telecast in the U.S. and within minutes are available on pirate Web sites. Research done in the U.K. names '24' as the single most-viewed (TV program) on the Internet in the U.K. because people are so anxious to keep up with the plot."...

Hollywood studios are facing an unprecedented health dilemma as hundreds of TV program buyers from around the world -- including many from areas designated as high-risk regions for SARS -- prepare to meet in Southern California next month for the annual Los Angeles Screenings. Health experts have been called in by some studios to advise on how best to safeguard their staff and customers during the big international TV sales event. Some executives are talking privately about the possibility of having to introduce some form of quarantine for customers who fly in from SARS regions -- or even issuing surgical masks to studio staff. "Everyone is concerned", said Marion Edwards, executive vp international television at 20th Century Fox Television Distribution. "It is a serious issue, and people are concerned about safeguarding the health of the people who work on the lot. At the same time, they are concerned about handling it in a way that is not unpleasant or draconian to our clients." All of the studios are monitoring the SARS crisis daily, and several are understood to be considering enacting policies for dealing with broadcasters who fly in from regions designated by the World Health Organization as SARS centers, including Toronto and several major Asian TV territories.
