The IP pipeline connecting the comic book sector to Hollywood continues to pump at a robust pace (and superhero movies now account for 10 of the top 25 highest-grossing films of all time) but the flow isn’t entirely a single-direction one.
Last summer, I wrote up a roll call round-up about the parade of Hollywood types (J.J. Abrams and John Carpenter among them) who have dipped into the world of comic books and graphic novels as visiting creative talent.
Today, a follow-up with new batch of show-biz citizens playing tourist in the vivid landscape of comics: Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, and Twiztid, the venerable Detroit hip-hop duo. Let’s take them in reverse order…
Twiztid: The hip-hop tandem of Jamie Madrox and Monoxide have been on the music scene since 1997 but they qualify for dual citizenship in the comics sector these days.

We were able to catch up with Jamie Madrox, one half of the Detriot rap duo Twiztid, who have put together an absolutely amazing third year of their pop culture convention Astronomicon which takes place on February 7th through the 9th in Sterling Heights, Michigan. In this interview, we discuss the many ways in which Astronomicon has continued to grow as it enters its’ third year, the guests that are booked, what Madrox “nerds” out over, plans for new music from Twiztid and more. Q: How excited are you for this third year of Astronomicon? Jamie Madrox: I’m super excited. I’ve watched it grow like my children over the years and I’ve seen it starting to become its’ own thing and it’s becoming independent on its’ own. Much like human life, it’s getting bigger as it grows which is a good thing! I don...

Every fan of Kevin Smith’s early film “Clerks” should certainly be aware of actor Brian O’Halloran who played disgruntled convenience store clerk Dante in the 1994 cult classic. To this very day his signature phrase “I’m not even supposed to be here today!” is without a doubt one of the most infamous film quotes of all time and O’Halloran still enjoys every moment interacting with fans and his View Askew family. O’Halloran is set to appear, along with his “Clerks” co-star Jeff Anderson at the upcoming Astronomicon convention taking place in Sterling Heights, Michigan curated and founded by rappers Twiztid. This will mark the first time that the pair have appeared at a convention together which certainly has fans buzzing. O’Halloran appeared at the first Astronomicon convention back in 2018. The appearance is also in celebration of “Clerks” 25th anniversary. We had a chance to catch up...

Being somebody who attends a great deal of conventions in southeast Michigan each year, I’m understandably thrilled to see whenever another new show joins the club. Really, no matter if it’s as big as Motor City Comic Con or as small as Redford Comic Con, I’m going to do my best to show up.
That said, Astronomicon was the latest event to catch my eye. Essentially being a pop culture extravaganza that blends various types of fandom, I could tell that it was going to be something special just by how well the organizers interacted with fans on social media and promoted the thing. And, as expected, it lived up to expectations because every aspect that I was able to witness was pulled off rather well.
In addition to boasting a solid presence by vendors, crafters and local comic book talent like the folks from Source Point Press and Brian E.
