Lahore, Sep 5 (Ians) Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first against Afghanistan in their last group stage match, here at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.
Both the teams need to win the match to qualify for the Group 4 stage but it will be a formidable task for Afghanistan to win it with the big margin. Both the teams are playing with the same playing XI.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Dhasun Shanaka said: “It’s always handy to put runs on the board batting first, takes out the pressure of runs. We have a good bowling lineup and we would love to defend it.”
“Honestly we wanted to bowl first because Nrr is a big factor for us so we wanted to chase. We will try our best to take good decisions and play positively,” said Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi

New Delhi, Aug 27 (Ians) Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin released a long statement, expressing his thoughts on the ‘mankading’ controversy, and said If anyone run-outs Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or any big player in the Knockout stage of the game, the hell will break out in that situation.
Here is what Ashwin wrote on X, previously Twitter:“This is a fair assessment of the situation. Imagine someone running out Kohli, Rohit, Smith, Root, or any crucial batter at the nonstrikers in the World Cup semi-final or a crunch game that will decide qualification.
“I am sure hell will break loose and there will be a character assassination campaign by some experts who still don’t agree with it and of course, fans that are on the receiving end.”

Kabul, Aug 6 (Ians) The 18-year-old left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad made a comeback as the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced a strong 18-member squad for the three-match Odi series against Pakistan to be played in Sri Lanka later this month.
For the series which will be a buildup for the Asia Cup and an important stop in firming up their squad for the upcoming Men’s Odi World Cup in India, Afghanistan brought back teenage spinner Noor Ahmad as they work out various combinations.
Noor’s return means that there was no room for left-arm spinner Zia Ur Rahman Akbar, who recently made his Odi debut against Bangladesh, the squad to be led by Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Uncapped leg-spinner Izhar-ul-haq Naveed, who was part of the Test squad, has also been left out for the three matches that will be played on August 22, 24 and August 26.

With some of the biggest names in cricket battling it out, fans are being treated to a showcase of skill and talent. However, as with any competition, there are always teams that fail to live up to the expectations.
Three teams — Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings — have been eliminated from the playoff race. Capitals were the first team to be eliminated, followed by Sunrisers and Punjab Kings.
Why did Delhi fail?
Delhi Capitals have arguably been one of the worst teams in the competition this season, finishing their campaign with just 10 points from 14 matches.
The team’s internal struggles in finalising their starting lineup, coupled with underperforming key players, have contributed to their early elimination from the competition, making them effectively the first team to be knocked out.
DC’s batting line-up consists of high-quality top-order batsmen such as David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw.

Sharjah, March 25 (Ians) A run-a-ball 38 not out by Mohammad Nabi after a brilliant display by their bowlers helped Afghanistan beat Pakistan by six wickets in the first of the three T20I matches here.
It’s been over 11 years since the two teams first played each other and Rashid Khan’s side has finally managed to win their first international match against Pakistan, playing without many regulars including skipper Babar Azam, here on Friday night.
Nabi figured in an unfinished 53-run partnership with Najibullah Zadran (17 not out) as they rescued Afghanistan from a precarious position to take them to 98/4 in 17.5 overs after the bowlers showed their class to restrict the new-look Pakistan side to 92/9 in their 20 overs.
It was a clinical performance by Afghanistan from start to finish as they put on a great display despite losing the toss and being asked to bowl first.

The next day, I was asked to pick my favourites for the tournament — the teams likely to be in the final and the players to watch out for.
The Asia Cup has always been a keenly-contested tournament. Irrespective of the format (T20 or 50 over), no nation has shown breakaway domination since the tournament’s inception. It is like a prelude to the biggest event — the World Cup.
This edition of the Asia Cup too saw players come in with a reputation of being hopefuls or the ones to look out for in the future.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the Afghanistan wicket-keeper and opening batter, has impressed with every outing in international cricket. Coming from the system of domestic cricket and being a member of the 2018 Afghanistan Under-19 World Cup team, he was drafted into the squad by Gujarat Titians for Ipl 2022.
His stroke-play provided that explosive start against Sri Lanka even when...

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Opener Kl Rahul is captaining India in place of regular captain Rohit Sharma as Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first in a dead-rubber of Super Four stage in Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
Both India and Afghanistan are looking to sign off from Asia Cup 2022 on a high after crashing out of contention for the final. Both teams won their matches in the group stages. But then, they lost both of their two matches in the Super Four stage.
On Wednesday, Pakistan got a breath-taking one-wicket win over Afghanistan at Sharjah, which meant the Babar Azam-led side got themselves into the final against Sri Lanka on Sunday, knocking India and Afghanistan out of the competition.
“Left the ground straight after the team talk, had a green tea and then took some sleeping pills. It was a tough night. We...

Sharjah, Sep 8 (Ians) The back-to-back sixes smashed by his No. 10 batter Naseem Shah in the final over of the Asia Cup 2022 Super Four stage match against Afghanistan reminded Pakistan skipper Babar Azam of the last-ball six hit by the legendary Javed Miandad in the same Sharjah International Stadium a few decades back.
Pakistan, who had to win the match to put India out of contention, needed 20 off 10 balls with two wickets in hand when Naseem Shah walked out to the middle. The tailender, who had only ever faced one ball in T20Is before this, had the experienced Asif Ali at the other end and he quickly turned over the strike to his more senior teammate.
But panic set in when Ali was dismissed on the fifth ball of the penultimate over, with Naseem then deciding to take it upon himself from that point with Pakistan still requiring 13 runs to register the victory.

Dubai, Sep 7 (Ians) Team India’s chances of Asia Cup 2022 are hanging by a thread, literally. Two defeats in two matches of Super Four stage to Pakistan and Sri Lanka means Thursday’s match against Afghanistan is a must-win situation for the defending champions to have a chance in getting to the final.
A week ago, all was well with the Indian camp after topping Group A in Asia Cup and cruising to Super Four stage. Cut to now, and all that jubilation seems to be a thing of the past. Two tosses lost and two defeats with a ball to spare. Suddenly, more questions than answers have come up for India with the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia now just less than 45 days away.
With the exit door staring right in their eyes, India now have to beat Afghanistan by a convincing margin and pray for their...
