Some of these laws have been tied up in state court systems over their constitutionality, but they’ve regardless had a chilling effect on venues and events that were once drag friendly, either out of fear of legal consequences or the threat of violence. We spoke with several performers living and working in those embattled states to find out what...

Los Angeles, May 29 (Ians) ‘The Little Mermaid’ make-up designer Peter Smith King has clapped back at criticisms of the revamped Ursula look that actress Melissa McCarthy brings to life in the new live-action remake.
He specifically contends against a belief that a queer artiste should have landed the job.
Rob Minkoff, the character animator of the original 1989 film, pulled reference from the late drag performer Divine for Ursula, reports ‘Variety’.
When speaking with Time, Minkoff said: “Divine seemed like such a great, larger-than-life character, and it just seemed like a funny and quirky idea to take (Ursula) and treat her more like a drag queen.”
Since the first footage of McCarthy’s Ursula was revealed, King’s iteration of the aquatic villain has been met with criticism from some drag performers.

RuPaul, the face of the “Drag Race” franchise, has responded to the recent wave of anti-drag and anti-trans legislation introduced by Republican lawmakers in the U.S.
In an Instagram video on Wednesday, the Emmy winner called the bills “a classic distraction technique” and urged Americans to register to vote.
“Hey, look over there! A classic distraction technique, distracting us away from the real issues that they were voted into office to focus on: jobs, healthcare, keeping our children safe from harm at their own school,” RuPaul said. “But we know that bullies are incompetent at solving real issues. They look for easy targets so they can give the impression of being effective. They think our love, our light, our laughter and our joy are signs of weakness. But they’re wrong because that is our strength.”

Kerri Colby is a model, activist and online and TV personality who most recently appeared on Season 14 of the Emmy Award-winning series “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
Throughout the month of February, Variety will publish essays from prominent Black artists, artisans and entertainment figures celebrating the impact of Black entertainment and entertainers on the world at large.
I remember watching “RuPaul’s Drag Race” as a traumatized teen in Dallas, Texas. Seeing so many gay, trans and nonbinary people on television, doing what they love, gave me hope that I too could have a future living as my true self. I grew up in a conservative, religious, homophobic and transphobic family that did not accept me. I hid my queerness as long as I could, but when it became too much, I had to leave. I was 15 years old. Thanks to the goodness of others, I survived homelessness, and at 18, I made my way to Los Angeles.

While “Drag Race” and all its offshoots are full of LGBTQ+ representation, the most recent season of “Untucked” was extra special as it saw Season 14 Queen Jasmine Kennedie come out while holding the hand of her sister Kerri Colby.
As TheWrap spoke with Jasmine, Kerri, and executive producers Mandy Salangsang and Tom Campbell during the Awards Season Screening of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” they addressed having that powerful, personal and touching moment captured on TV.
“Up until that point into that season, I would say I was very comfortable with a camera around me. I will say I was very loose and didn’t really have any,...

Here’s a crossover for fans of The Daily Show and RuPaul’s Drag Race.
The Comedy Central series and the VH1 show, which was just renewed for season 15, are coming together to drag the Republican party over its recent comments on, well, drag.
The Daily Show correspondent Dulcé Sloan and RuPaul star Kerri Colby, who appeared on season 14, are helping the likes of Florida governor Ron DeSantis, Kari Lake, who is running to become Arizona governor, and Michigan Republican Beau Lafave to find their inner drag queens.
It comes after DeSantis filed a complaint against a Miami restaurant for letting children into a drag brunch event. Lake, meanwhile, has attacked drag queens during campaigning, despite previously partying with drag queen Richard Stevens, otherwise known as Barbra Seville, who was dressed as Marilyn Monroe at the time. Beau Lafave recently announced a new bill that would empower parents to sue public...

On Wednesday, August 10, in partnership with the Carrera Cafe in Los Angeles, queens from season 14 of VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” unveiled a sickening FYC Mural to celebrate their show’s eight Emmy nominations and the three additional bids for sister series “Untucked,” “All Stars” and “Whatcha Packin’ with Michelle Visage.” Lady Camden, Bosco, Kerri Colby, June Jambalaya, Jasmine Kennedie and DeJa Skye were all in attendance and, following the unveiling, volunteered at the LA LGBT Center in Hollywood by filling food delivery boxes for community families.
The mural is displayed on the outer wall of the Melrose Avenue cafe that will also have special “Drag Race” coffee topper promotions and limited edition coffee cup sleeves as part of the month-long celebration. This story about Michelle Visage and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” has had the Outstanding Competition Program Emmy win on lock since 2018, but just hearing the show was nominated once again in 2022 left judge Michelle Visage awestruck. “I have to pinch myself every time ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ is announced,” Visage said. “It does not go unnoticed, unloved, unworshipped, unaccepted. There’s not an ounce, an ion, on my body that takes that for granted every time they call our name.
“There were nine years that we weren’t even acknowledged by the Academy. So each time that we are nominated, it’s like, ‘Oh, my goodness. This is really happening.’”
2022 brought the World of Wonder franchise 11 total Emmy nominations, including host (for RuPaul Charles), cinematography, sound mixing, picture editing, casting, directing and production design for the mothership.

There’s always plenty of fun to be had on RuPaul’s Drag Race, but Season 14 of the VH1 show was a standout because of the emotional moments. And there were many.
From Jasmine Kennedie coming out as a trans woman to Willow Pill’s frankness about battling a rare chronic illness, the latest season of the reality competition that earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Competition Show was really about “the tenacity of the human spirit,” judge and senior producer Michelle Visage says.
“That’s the beauty of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It is a safe space for these kids to be authentically themselves with one another and be there for one another,” added Visage, who was joined on Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees panel with Queens Kerri Colby and Kennedie, showrunner Mandy Salangsang and executive producer Michele Mills. “That’s really at the core of what RuPaul’s Drag Race is all about.

“Normally, on one reality show you look for one or two things. With this we’re looking for like eight,” exclaims “RuPaul’s Drag Race” casting director Ethan Peterson. He and fellow casting director Goloka Bolte have earned two consecutive Emmy Awards for bringing beloved drag queens to the screen. Before a queen can rocket to stardom on the hit reality series, they must first make an impression with these two creatives. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The key to scoring a slot in the “Drag Race” competition is a killer audition tape and this pair of casting directors watches them all. “We’re looking for those authentic voices, queens who really know who they are and bring something fresh and new to the table,” explains Bolte. She admits that in order to get through the inundation of audition reels there are “a lot of late nights in pajamas,” but the hours are worth it.

The 14th season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will live in the herstory books as a big step forward for trans representation.
The show began with just two trans queens, Kerri Colby and Kornbread, but as the season progressed, they were joined by three others who spoke their truths, Bosco, Jasmine Kennedie and Willow Pill. It became the most trans-inclusive season to date.
Further cementing the season in herstory, Willow Pill was crowned America’s Drag Race Superstar, and she became the first out transgender winner of the main “Drag Race” franchise.
Speaking with Variety last month at RuPaul’s DragCon, Colby called the season “trans-tastic.” She stressed this wasn’t just a trend for the season, but that it was a place for her to speak her truth. Colby said, “I was very nervous to approach my truth for so long. Part of it was that I never felt like I saw me.

We've found our new winner! America's Next Drag Superstar was crowned in a grand ceremony on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 14 Episode 16.
A fabulous night of Las Vegas shenanigans and showgirl looks closed the book on a roller-coaster season.
Did the finale end on a high note? Did the Final five come to slay? (I've got a wittle feeling that it didn't disappoint.)
Before we get into the lip-syncing, we need to chat about the finale looks. The queens go all out for "Grand Finale," so these ensembles end on a bang!
Alyssa Hunter, Kornbread, Kerri Colby, Angeria Paris VanMichaels, and Lady Camden had the Top 5 favorite looks of the night.
Alyssa and Angeria shined in their breathtaking opulent gowns. Alyssa always brought style to the runway, but her rich madam look and money fan redeemed any issues over her lip-sync mishap.
And Angeria's gigantic blue showgirl feathers stole the show.

In episode 8 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 14, the queens got a “heart on” on the runway after dividing into girl groups for a retro-inspired singing and performance challenge. In Friday’s seventh episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race 14,” RuPaul Charles surprised the queens twice. First she added fart sounds into their soapy performances in “The Daytona Wind” drama and then she announced that there would be no bottoms for the week and no elimination. Instead she named the top six and had two of them lipsync for the win and a $5,000 cast tip. In episode 6 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 14, the queens were asked to create from scratch a fresh look using the unconventional materials found in Michelle Visage‘s discarded online shopping orders. When Jorgeous was declared the winner for what a perceivably simple design, Daya Betty was not shy about her disappointment in the judges’ decision to once again place her as “safe.”
This week, the nine remaining queens dust off their overacting skills in a daytime soap spoof directed by RuPaul Charles. Read below for our recap of episode 7 to see who delivers the melodrama best in “The Daytona Wind.”
The nine remaining queens are: Angeria Paris VanMicheals, Bosco, Daya Betty, DeJa Skye, Jasmine Kennedie, Jorgeous, Kerri Colby, Lady Camden, and Willow Pill.
The argument that Maddy Morphosis and Jasmine had in “Untucked” last week was settled by Jasmine sending Maddy home in the lipsync. To see Jasmine put her...

The winds were calling on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 14 Episode 7, and it was a laugh riot.
"The Daytona Wind" didn't take itself too seriously, so we got to go along for the ride. As strange as it might be, the fart jokes worked in getting all the laughs.
A confusing-yet-funny round of Drag Race felt like a breath of fresh air. A nice break from the cutthroat eliminations to enjoy the silliness of the series.
Filler weeks have a long depressing history with Drag Race.
As with any reality TV show, rounds where obvious contestants are eliminated or no one goes home tend to drag on the pacing. RuPaul's Drag Race has many episodes to fill, so it has suffered this curse before. But "The Daytona Wind" didn't feel like filler.
The editing had a purpose and followed the same structure as if someone were to go home. The scenes...

In episode 5 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 14, RuPaul Charles brought back pork chopped queens Tempest DuJour, Jaymes Mansfield and Kahmora Hall to inspire a PSAs spoof challenge. Jorgeous fell into the bottom two, but lived up to Ru’s declaration that she’s “born to do drag” by handily beating Orion Story in the Lip Sync for Your Life. In addition, Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté surprised us all by announcing that she’d be leaving the competition on doctor’s orders after rolling her ankle.
This week, the 10 remaining queens dive into Michelle Visage’s discarded online shopping boxes for materials in an unconventional materials sewing challenge. Read below for our recap of episode 6 to see how they put the pieces together in “Glamazon Prime.”

A design challenge has claimed another unlucky queen on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 14 Episode 6.
If a queen doesn't know how to put together an outfit or has an eye for fashion, they'll quickly be walking out the door. There's only so much personality they can show before the lack of craftiness rears its ugly head.
Unfortunately, the latest eliminated queen had a history of underwhelming outfits. And just like that runway ensemble, this round felt underwhelming as well.
"Glamazon Prime" was more filler than fire.
When the entire focus centers around the prep for the Maxi Challenge runway, the pacing takes a massive hit in the process. There are only so many chats about materials and outfits before it becomes repetitive.
And beyond Jorgeous' last-minute scramble to create a new look or Daya Betty snapping at Willow Pill, the Werk Room construction didn't have much weight to it.

Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Monét X Change runs down the tricks and trades of the newest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” with a guest host. Following Friday’s fifth episode, All Stars 2 winner Alaska stops by to “save us all” with the truth that a foundation supporting queens that went home first is much less necessary than the need for a group that gives financial support to the queens that go home second. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Monét and Alaska lament the premature departure of Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté, but agree with Kornbread that it gives the rest of the queens a fighting chance at making the finale that they otherwise probably wouldn’t have had. Alaska also serves the tea that she learned how to do wigs from Jaymes Mansfield‘s...

In episode 4 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 14, RuPaul Charles divided the queens into two groups to write and film superteaser spoofs in promotion of their own season. The comedy acting challenge was an opportunity to see the girls break out of their comfort zone and get a little bit “ugly,” but Kerri Colby kept to her own pretty ways and Alyssa Hunter played her character in one and only one note. In a decision the audience did not agree with, the judges sent Alyssa home, leaving only 12 queens to continue to compete for the crown.
This week, the remaining queens divide into groups yet again to create public service announcements aimed at protecting the careers of our dearly departed queens, gone too soon. Read below for our recap of episode 5 to see the return of Tempest DuJour, Jaymes Mansfield and Kahmora Hall in “Save a Queen.”
