The documentary “Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution” is set to premiere globally on June 18 on Netflix. The feature-length documentary, the first of its kind to address this topic, examines the history of queer stand-up comedy as — according to its logline — “an instrument for social change over the past five decades, actively reflecting and challenging cultural norms and values.”
The film combines stand-up performances and talking head interviews, as well as archival materials featuring LGBTQ+ comedians, and includes Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes, Suzy Izzard, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro, Rosie O’Donnell, Margaret Cho, Bob The Drag Queen and Trixie Mattel.
Historians interviewed for the documentary include Dave Holmes, Roger Mason, Shar Jossell, Susan Stryker and Kate Aurthur, Variety‘s Editor-at-Large.

Exclusive: HBO Max has ordered a second season of adult animated series Ten Year Old Tom, from Steve Dildarian, animation veteran Nick Weidenfeld and Tomorrow Studios. The renewal is being announced today at Rooster Teeth’s Rtx festival in Austin.
Created, produced, directed and written by The Life and Times of Tim‘s Dildarian, Ten Year Old Tom follows the misadventures of an average kid as he contends with questionable guidance from the well-meaning grownups around him. Being a kid is hard enough for Tom, but when bad influences seem to lurk around every corner – from litigious parents and drug-dealing bus drivers to school administrators who want to sleep with his mom – it’s downright impossible. While the adults in Tom’s life certainly mean well, they just can’t manage to lead by example.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) made history as the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2022 Best Character Voice-Over ballot list below consists of a whopping 222 performances. Seeking a third consecutive victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

Page Hurwitz had a plan to tell the story of LGBTQ+ comedians with the help of one big historic show — and then the pandemic hit.
But as the global shuttering put a pause on her original plans, it opened the door for an invitation to the Netflix Is a Joke festival, where the director, writer, producer and comedian’s planned show — a featured part of Stand Out: The Documentary, which will debut on Netflix later this year — was able to be part of the streamer’s first major live comedy festival.
Hosted by Billy Eichner and headlined by Eddie Izzard, Margaret Cho, Sandra Bernhard, Tig Notaro, Wanda Sykes and Rosie O’Donnell, the show is the largest known amassing of LGBTQ+ comedic talent on one stage. Billy Eichner and Mae Martin have called out Netflix’s support of Dave Chappelle’s jokes about queer and trans people — in a comedy special released by Netflix itself.
Both comedians appear in “Stand Out: An LGBTQ Celebration,” which debuted on June 9 after being taped at Netflix Is a Joke Fest in May. The event, hosted by Eichner, was the largest-ever gathering of LGBTQ+ comics in one stand-up special, according to Netflix.
“We all know how backwards and dangerous the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ laws are,” Eichner says in the special. “Queer people, and especially trans people, are under legislative attack in this country. Trans people are being demeaned. They’re trying to dehumanize trans people. They’re trying to erase trans people. And I’m not even talking about Florida. I’m talking about Dave Chappelle’s latest Netflix special!”

With less than four weeks until the festival begins, Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival has added new shows to its lineup, including top stand-up performances, Netflix series cast events, as well as a free outdoor fan experience. The festival, which now boasts over 250 live shows across over 30 venues covering Los Angeles, is produced by Netflix in association with Live Nation.
One of the added highlights of the event is the Billy Eichner-hosted Stand Out: An LGBTQ + Celebration. The celebration is happening in 2022, (although postponed from 2020) in the wake of the October 2021 Netflix controversy that saw LGBTQ employees stage an office walkout due to what they considered to be transphobic content during Dave Chappelle’s Netflix comedy special, The Closer. Austin - This is a story about finger-banging to Kid Rock and marijuana gummi candies. Or, rather, it's a game about it. SXSW and St. Patrick's Day -- which both landed this week -- are in and of themselves drinking prompts, and a classic round of Two Truths And A Lie is how I found my way into an interview with comedians Ari Shaffir and Big Jay Oakerson. Both were on hand for a night of Comedy Central stardom in Austin. Shaffir hosted a live version of his popular web series-turned-tv show "This Is Not Happening," which is just finishing its first season run this week. “What’s Your F@!?#ng Deal” boasted Oakerson's miracle crowd work, along with features from Nate Bargatze, Joe DeRosa, Todd Glass and Liza Treyger. Put them together for telling facts and lies? A lot of naked truths. Watch our video above and play along.

Sarah Silverman corralled a whole bunch of funny friends, including Seth Rogen, John C. Reilly, Key & Peele and Tig Notaro, to contribute to the inaugural episode of Rubberhead, a new comedy variety show from Vimeo and the comedy collective Jash.
Silverman hosts the first episode, and as she succinctly introduces it in the trailer, "Welcome to a night of weird." The succession of clips includes everything from Rogen and Silverman engaging in some some high-octane cop action to a man with a weirdly shaped head chucking a Big Gulp at an innocent pedestrian.

Plenty of news from Syfy today. The most exciting bit is that Tricia Helfer is returning to the channel, joining the mini-series Ascension, according to EW. Ascension follows a secret U.S. mission where hundreds were sent to settle in a new world. However, 50 years into the journey, a murder has everyone questioning their mission. Helfer’s character is described as “beautiful, manipulative and dangerous”– because Helfer portrays those qualities so well.
The channel is also developing a series with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, as reported by TheWrap. Clone is based on a graphic novel about a man who finds out that there are clones of him when one burglarizes his home. If they can find a male actor as talented as Tatiana Maslany, we just might be willing to overlook the inevitable Orphan Black comparisons.
Syfy is also adapting Ronin… because someone doesn’t realize there...

Last night was the second annual [Redacted] comedy show, brought to the world by your friends at The A.V. Club along with Constellation and Just For Laughs. Once again, the comedians were kept secret until they walked on stage, and once again it was a lot of fun—and raised a bunch of money for 826 Chicago. And now we must thank everyone who donated their time, in order of appearance: Brian Babylon, Cameron Esposito, Kyle Kinane, Brian Posehn, David Cross, Todd Barry, Mac McCaughan, Jason Narducy, Jon Glaser (sort of), Todd Glass, Doug Benson, and John Hodgman. Last night, YouTube kicked off its Comedy Week with a 'Big Live Comedy Show' starring dozens of funny people from both new and traditional media. Promos used the tagline "this better be funny" to promote the event. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the kickoff show very clearly wasn't. Here are six reasons why what should've been a laugh fest (or at least a fake laugh fest) was a weak start to Comedy Week: This particular mix of new and traditional media didn't gel. During the pre-show, hosts Jenny Slate and Kassem G invited the legendary Norm Macdonald to join them. The former SNL cast member proceeded to run through a list of online creators he had clearly never heard of. When Slate praised Macdonald by calling him "one of the best," he sarcastically quipped "well, I'm no Harley Morenstein." And yet, when Morenstein appeared later in the show (alongside the spectacularly unfunny Todd Glass,...

TV Line has visited the set of Glee, and has news about our favorite couples. As for Britianna, well, there are going to be a lot of angry lesbians out there. And when it comes to Klaine, Darren Criss says that he and Kurt do "suss out" their relationship, but there's a new love interest for Kurt, and Blaine "strikes [up] a new relationship, not a romantic relationship – or maybe it is – with somebody who’s already been around, who is now more involved in Blaine’s life. They’ve kind of taken a new step in their relationship.” Clear as mud?
John Mulholland, editor of the British Observer, has released a statement about that horrible transphobic article over the weekend. "We have decided to withdraw from publication the Julie Burchill comment piece 'Transsexuals should cut it out'. The piece was an attempt to explore contentious issues within what had become a highly-charged debate.

Exactly a year ago, veteran comedian Todd Glass was a guest on Marc Maron's "Wtf" podcast. (Listen to the full episode below.) After some jokes about a "big announcement," Glass, at age 47, after doing comedy for 31 years, came out of the closet. Throughout the very powerful episode, he discussed why he did it. Much of it was personal, but he also said he felt an obligation to the kids having a terribly hard time growing up homosexual. Maron remarked on his palpable passion and clarity of thought. Glass is a brilliant comedian whose act is often self-referential and silly, so hearing him discuss these things with such focus was arresting. Now a year later, it appears Glass has grown more comfortable talking about being gay and gay issues, especially on his podcast, "The Todd Glass Show," where the topic occasionally comes up. Wanting to know how it's been...

If you're a fan of quality stand-up comedy and are holed up in your apartment with a Netflix Instant account today, you're in luck. Comedians Moshe Kasher and Todd Glass have released new specials exclusively through the streaming service.
Kasher, a Bay Area native, returned to his hometown for "Live in Oakland." Part of a new class of comics, Kasher delivers material that's somehow both provocative and self-deprecating, venturing especially into areas of religion and sexuality with a boldness that few comics will touch.
This marks Kasher's first special, and it follows his acclaimed 2009 album, "Everyone You Know Is Going to Die, and Then You Are!" Kasher's memoir, "Kasher in the Rye: The True Tale of a White Boy from Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, Mental Patient, and Then Turned 16." came out this year as well, and he is currently a staff writer on the sitcom "The New Normal.

Considering the rising success Louis C.K. has seen in the last few years, largely due to his Diy work ethic in Louie as well as the waves he made regarding the self distribution of his last few stand-up specials, “Late Show Part 1” is a much harder sell than the similarly autobiographical Louie segment, “Oh, Louie”, in which C.K.’s troubles with network executives in developing an honest and authentic family sitcom were depicted. The dissonance felt in “Late Show Part 1” results from the fact that both Jay Leno and a fictional CBS chairman, excellently played with an apt combination of sleaze and cunning by Gary Marshall, characterize Louie’s appearance as lead guest on The Tonight Show as the big break for which he’s been waiting his entire career. Marshall even goes so far as to say the comedian, “peaked five years ago.” This...

There are plenty of rewatch podcasts of great TV series available in the vastness of the internet, but this new one has some particularly interesting names and numbers involved. It’s about Star Trek, so our pointy ears are already perked up. It’s from Roddenberry Entertainment, with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry‘s son Rod Roddenberry executive producing, so it has an extra-authentic pedigree. It’s through Nerdist Industries, now a part of Legendary Entertainment, so the production (and nerdy) values are great.
But the best part of all is that it will be a weekly examination of Every Star Trek episode from Every Star Trek series, one by one. Six series, 30 seasons, 726 episodes. They’ve just started, so it’s only two episodes in so far – ”The Cage” and “The Man Trap” – making it easy for you to catch up. Here are the details:

The Internet has a way of sharing Internet-ready comedy clips and celebrity interviews from late night talk shows, but what about stand-up performances? A tight set may no longer be the career boost it once was, but we're always happy to see a funny comic have their moment in the sun in front of an audience of millions.
Last week, Ramin Nazer made his TV debut on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," Jay Larson did a set on "Conan," and Nick Griffin performed on Letterman for the eighth time. Todd Glass didn't perform stand-up on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," but he talked about the rigors of being a touring stand-up comic. Plus, a bonus clip of Neal Brennan on Fallon last week.
Let's hope we see more female comics soon!

Todd Glass stopped by "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" on Monday, and updated Fallon the aftermath of his very public coming out on "Wtf with Marc Maron" last month. After a few minutes of riffing on the "comedian condos" that Glass used to stay in while touring, and plugging his (great) podcast "The Todd Glass Show," Fallon brought up Glass' admission that he was gay, and the response he has seen.
Listen to Glass' full "coming out" interview on "Wtf" here.
After describing his reasoning for wanting to come out ("How much longer could I say, 'That's my roommate, ahem'?"), Glass told Fallon that he was glad he came out, as support came from even the most unexpected sources, like friends he had not seen in years. "It was all positive," Glass said.

Todd Glass, a veteran of "Last Comic Standing" who has appeared on "Louie" and other shows, came out as gay in an interview for Marc Maron's "Wtf" podcast. Glass, 47, said he wanted to come out because of recent suicides by gay teens. "I cannot listen to stories about kids killing themselves any longer without thinking, 'When are you going to have a little blood on your shirt for not being honest about who you are?'" he said. Stand-up comedian Todd Glass, a fixture of the Los Angeles comedy community, publicly came out as gay on Monday's episode of the podcast "Wtf with Marc Maron." After the revelation, Glass told Maron that his decision to come out publicly was fueled by the growing number of suicides committed by gay youths.
Glass, 47, hosts the podcast "The Todd Glass Show" on the Nerdist network and boasts a bevy of TV credits (including recent appearances on "Louie") as well as the 2009 stand-up album "Thin Pig" on Comedy Central Records. He had previously appeared on an early episode of the popular "Wtf" podcast, also in 2009, to discuss his life in comedy. But he recently approached Maron again to ask to use his show to reveal that he had not been totally honest about his sexual orientation outside of a few close friends, and felt a social responsibility to use his profile as an example.

Alex Murray has ended his partnership with John MacDonald in MacDonald-Murray Management and has become a manager at Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Murray reps standup comics, personalities and comedy writers, and is bringing clients that include Jim Gaffigan, G4's Web Soup host Chris Hardwick, Dan Finnerty and The Dan Band, Nascar fixture-turned-comic Michael Waltrip and comedy writers/performers Brandon McMillan, Todd Glass, Jonah Ray, Daniel Kinno and David Feldman. Murray said that he has wanted to join Bep since leaving Icm in 2000. He hopes to build his comedy business in the model of Gaffigan, who's also repped by CAA. Gaffigan has grown to become one of the top 5 touring comics in the country, and the millions he makes allows him to call the shots. He's now branching into acting and next stars on Broadway in That Championship Season alongside Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Chris Noth and Brian Cox. Murray has...

The Sarah Silverman Program is always hilarious and season 2, volume 2 is no exception. In this collection, Sarah is joined by her sister Laura (played by Laura Silverman, Sarah’s actual sister), Laura’s boyfriend Jay (Jay Johnston), her gay-bors (gay neighbors) Brian and Steve (Brian Posehn and Steve Agee), and her dog Doug for some of her wackiest adventures yet.
While this is clearly Sarah’s show, every character gets his or her turn in the limelight. For example, in the episode “Mongolian Beef” Steve creates short films which are so awesomely bad that he is chosen to make a reenactment film for Sarah’s trial against the country of Mongolia. Likewise, in “Pee,” Brian grows a freakishly long beard that gets stuck in the elevator machinery when he falls, but he won’t let the mall people cut it off. Jay confesses to a nocturnal emission on live television,...
