About 5 minutes into Joko Anwar’s latest film and I was convinced that he was actually God. Another 40 minutes and I had realised that he wasn’t really, but that he is rather an incredibly talented director with an imagination the size of a starship. The fact that Quiet Earth had highly recommended this based on Anwar’s previous film Kala had peaked my interest, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into here.
The film opens with Gambir’s latest exhibition, life casts of pregnant women which are causing a stir in the art world and fetching a very good price for the young sculptor. Although his girlfriend, Talyda, is proud of him and his friends appear to be happy for his success, there remains...

Palm Springs International Film Festival
Much candle wax is spilled in "The Stringless Violin", a florid melodrama about the deep bond between a former ballerina and a mute, autistic boy who serves as her surrogate son.
Making its U.S. debut at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Indonesia's submission for foreign-language Oscar consideration won't be seeing the light of many movie projectors beyond its corner of the world. The storytelling style is just too over the top for Western consumption.
Having given up her ballet career after being molested by her male teacher, Renjani (Ria Irawan) has opened a home for special-needs children given up by their parents, which she runs with Mbak Wid (Jajang C. Noer), a tarot card-reading pediatrician with a serious candle fetish.
Mbak Wid is a little concerned about Renjani's obsession with Dewa (Dicky Lebrianto), a severely brain-damaged child who she believes can be cured with enough love and the right kind of therapy.
Enter Bhisma (Nicholas Saputra), a young violinist who takes an interest in the boy and subsequently falls in love with Renjani.
Will Mbak Wid's tireless readings prove accurate about their lives together or is Renjani, still haunted by her traumatic past, doomed to a tragic future?
Given all those symbolic, snuffed-out candle shots that first-time writer-director Sekar Ayu Asmara keeps throwing in, you don't need any tarot cards to figure out the answers.
