Soon after Bill Bradley takes the stage in Rolling Along: An American Story, there’s a realization that this is not a traditional political documentary of talking heads, archival clips and fleeting reflections.
The project instead is a “performative autobiography,” as Bradley, the former NBA champion, U.S. senator and presidential candidate, calls it.
During the 90-minute, one-man show, Bradley talks, in poetic terms at times, about reaching the heights of fame and suffering stinging losses. He recounts a life growing up in Crystal City, Mo, becoming a star athlete in high school, attending Princeton and then playing the New York Knicks. He speaks of how the teamwork skills helped open his eyes to the world and led to his political career, culminating in his 2000 bid for the presidency. He was defeated by then-Vice President Al Gore in his quest for the Democratic nomination. “I went from thinking of myself...

During the Espn anniversary year that launched the "30 for 30" documentary series, one of the most interesting things about the films was how little they resembled one another. All were about sports (mostly), and all were about things that happened during the first 30 years that Espn was in business, but beyond that they felt completely distinct from one another, whether the narration-less video collage of "June 17, 1994," the kinetic energy of "Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks," or the mournful quality of "The Two Escobars." As Espn has kept the series alive well past that anniversary year — including the brief stint when new films were presented under the "Espn Films Presents" banner — certain formulas have crept in, particularly when it comes to films about iconic teams. They're still fun, still full of great archival footage and wonderful memories from the team members in present-day, but movies like "The Fab Five,...

When the Garden Was Eden
Directed by Michael Rapaport
USA, 2014
It was Game 5 of the 1970 NBA finals. A tight series between the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks might have turned when Knicks star Willis Reed went down with a leg injury. Reed—the captain of the team, the league Mvp, and the toughest bastard in basketball—missed the rest of the game (a Knicks win), as well as the next won (which the Lakers took), and he was officially listed as unlikely to play in the seventh and deciding game of the series.
It wasn’t Reed’s style to give in so easily, however. During warmups, he hobbled onto the court at Madison Square Garden, and the crowd went bananas. The call from ABC announcer Marv Albert (a lifelong Knicks fan) is iconic: “Here comes Willis!”
Reed scored the first two baskets of the game as he...

Allen & Co Hollywood moguls are arriving at the 31st annual Allen & Co investment conference in Sun Valley starting today — and this time there’s something fun awaiting them. For years now the mogulfest has been mostly a showbiz snorefest with not a single entertainment panel on the official schedule. But my sources say this year’s features a Friday media panel consisting of Rupert Murdoch, John Malone, and Barry Diller. In other words, a trio of enemies who have sued or badmouthed each other so much over the years that it’s hard to imagine them sitting in the same room much less conferring politely together. The other sessions appear to be way less enticing: Wednesday: Sports discussion featuring NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell; Presentation by Google co-founder Larry Page. Thursday: Panel entitled ‘Cyber Insecurity’; Economic growth discussion led by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Presentation by the President of Mexico; Discussion...

Here's an exclusive photo of newlyweds George Lucas and Mellody Hobson!
The visionary "Star Wars" filmmaker wed the Ariel Investments president before an intimate gathering at Skywalker Ranch, in Marin County, California, at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.
The ceremony was officiated by journalist Bill Moyers, who famously interviewed the writer Joseph Campbell at Skywalker Ranch for a landmark documentary series in 1988, and Lucas' daughters, Katie and Amanda, served as bridesmaids. According to Arianna Huffington, who was in attendance, Moyers spoke so movingly that several married couples said afterward that they felt they'd renewed their own vows.
"It only takes one person to have met the love of your life," Moyers, who was a Baptist minister before launching his illustrious career in journalism, told the bride and groom. Moyers went on to quote the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi: "When I heard my first love story, I was thinking of you.

In Ncaa football or the NBA, defense wins championships. In media softball, however, it’s all about offense. Vanity Fair softball squad learned that lesson the hard way last night on Central Park’s North Meadow during yet another futile face-off with their longtime nemeses the High Times Bonghitters. Head coach Matt Pressman has been away from the bench due to undisclosed personal reasons (Summer Vacation), and passed the reins to Senator Bill Bradley for last week’s loss to DC Comics and last night’s 4-1 loss to the Bonghitters. Maybe it’s Bradley’s lack of coaching experience or the heat advisories or a post-All Star Break slump, but the Veefers simply cannot put the bat on the ball. Veteran leadoff-man David Gendelman was hard on himself in the locker room after the game, saying, “I let you down, Bradley. Two weeks in a row now.* No one can get a hit.

Admiral Mike Mullen says the sea was his business. Now, as America's top military officer, he's reshaping strategy for a world in which economics and security are intertwined.
On the evening of January 6, Admiral Mike Mullen got into his armored SUV and girded himself for the last meeting of his day. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had been up since well before dawn -- he'd gone to the gym at 4:30 that morning. A bad cold was making him feel as if his head were stuffed with gauze. And his aides? Slave drivers! He'd wanted to cancel his appearance on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, but he had done that once before, and they thought it would be bad form to back out again.
