An undocumented Filipino cleaner is employed at a vast, remote mansion to care for a bedridden David Hayman, while hiding her daughter Grace
There are interesting ideas – and a tremendous final choir sequence – in this scary movie; it offers a critique of British colonialism, and also plays with the text of Rudyard Kipling’s 1899 poem The White Man’s Burden that urged the United States to assume the thankless imperial task of civilising and subjugating the people of the Philippines, and nobly overlooking how ungrateful they are going to be. There is ingenuity here, and good acting, but the film for me feels flawed by its strained melodrama, an absence of scares and by a very odd scene of almost unreal, farcical absurdity.

Paris Zarchilla’s 2023 horror mystery, Raging Grace, is a nerve-wracking delight but in all the right ways. This soothing, slow-paced film skillfully delves into the hidden layers of horror, steering clear of the typical jump scares and worn-out ideas we’ve seen in countless other movies. In layman’s terms, Raging Grace is an absolute must-watch. The film chronicles the story of Joy (Max Eigenmann), an immigrant who had come to a foreign land to carve out a better living for herself and her daughter, Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla). Joy tries all sorts of odd jobs and commits to her duties with all her heart, yet people see her as an opportunist who would steal their belongings the moment they turned their heads away. In addition, Joy is also saving up every penny to get a citizenship certificate from Gary.

Brainstorm Media and Music Box Films have jointly picked up the North American rights to Paris Zarcilla’s horror movie Raging Grace.
A Dec. 8 theatrical release is being planned for the debut feature from British-born Filipino writer-director Zarcilla that bowed at South by Southwest, where it won two grand jury awards for best film and best debut.
Raging Grace follows an undocumented Filipino immigrant and single mom who works as the caretaker for a haunted British estate. As the mother and her daughter care for a terminally ill elderly man, they get entangled in a chilling secret.
As a horror flick, Raging Grace also explores themes of race, power, identity and the haunting consequences of hidden truths.
The movie stars Max Eigenmann, newcomer Jaeden Paige Boadilla, Leanne Best and David Hayman and is produced by Chi Thai.
“So rarely is a film so successful as both a social critique and a genuinely scary movie.

Raging Grace has already featured at a number of festivals this year, most notably SXSW where it picked up the Narrative Feature Jury Award and Thunderbird Rising Award for Best Debut, but sometimes the buzz around a movie doesn’t quite live up to the hype, which can leave you wondering what all the fuss was about. However, when it comes to Raging Grace, all plaudits are fully deserved.
Raging Grace tells the story of Joy, an undocumented Filipina woman living in the UK with her daughter, Grace. In a desperate attempt to gain citizenship quickly she saves all the money she can from her housekeeping jobs. Day after day she toils whilst listening to the ignorant, offensive and demeaning comments from the people she works for. Joy must also juggle her day job with being a full-time mother to her mischievous daughter.
But, one day, Joy gets a break.

‘Raging Grace’ FrightFest Review – Gothic Horror Mines Suspense and Terror from Immigrant Experience
Writer/Director Paris Zarcilla’s feature debut, Raging Grace joins films like His House and No One Gets Out Alive in examining the horrors of immigration from within the walls of a haunted house. Instead of ghosts from the past or creatures, though, Zarcilla spins a taut tale of gothic horror combined with personal drama that sets it apart. The focus on its characters means a slower-coiling horror story, but one that surprises with unexpected detours.
Joy (Max Eigenmann) lives in London as an undocumented Filipina immigrant. Housecleaning is the only work she can successfully find as a single mom to feisty young daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla). To save up enough money to obtain a Visa, Joy sets her sights on affluent clients. It leads her to the sprawling estate of Mr. Garrett (David Hayman), an older man slowly succumbing to cancer. Debutante director Paris Zarcilla delivers a fiery first feature in Raging Grace, the story of an immigrant woman who takes a much needed service job in the wrong house. Starring Max Eigenmann as Joy and Jaeden Paige Boadilla as her precocious daughter Grace, the film puts a chilling spin on the dangers faced by migrant workers searching for a better life. There’s nothing that Joy wants more than UK citizenship. A Filipina immigrant working as a housekeeper, she makes all of her money under the table. It isn’t much, though, and she and Grace are barely scraping by. If she can get her citizenship, she can come out of the shadows, maybe open a bank account, get a place for the two of them to...

Jaeden Paige Boadilla in Raging Grace
A nail-biting thriller which looks at what happens when Filipina immigrant Joy (Max Eigenmann) and her young daughter, Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), discover something seriously amiss in the home of a wealthy employer, Raging Grace combines elements of Gothic mystery with a sharp critique of racism and class-based exploitation in contemporary British society. It’s the work of writer/director Paris Zarcilla and producer Chi Thai, and it won a host of awards at SXSW, kicking off a highly successful tour of the festival circuit. Most recently, it screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and that’s where I got talking to Paris and Chi.
“It was written back in 2020 – a very chaotic year, I think, for many of us,” Paris tells me. “There was an opportunity to begin interrogating just who we actually are in this world. I really started thinking about my own identity,...

Do you ever see those memes on the internet which say things to the effect of ”Would you spend a night in this house for £1,000?” When the house is genuinely scary, the answer really just comes down to how poor one is. Joy (Max Eigenmann) is desperate. Her visa has expired. She knows that people from Immigration Services are looking for her. She has saved up everything she can, but still she needs to find another £5,000, and quickly, in order to obtain identity papers for herself and her daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla). When she is unexpectedly offered a lucrative new opportunity by a wealthy woman in a large house, she finds it impossible to turn down, in spite of the various factors making her uncomfortable.
“Don’t say Ma’am. Just Katherine,” says the woman (Leanne Best) in a clipped Rp accent and tones which belie the friendliness she purports to.

Not unlike the rage sparked within Bong Joon Ho’s now-classic Parasite, Paris Zarcilla’s Raging Grace explores a perverse relationship between a wealthy estate owner and their laborer. Rather than comment on class systems and populist rage, the writer-director frames this conversation in the context of immigration and colonization, which is on its face scarier than any slasher movie could ever be. Striking an often playful and darkly comic tone, the SXSW Jury Prize winner captivates as it delves deeper into psychological horror.
Max Eigenmann stars as Joy, an undocumented Filipina immigrant who bounces from house to house in London with daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), staying while families are out of town and under the radar of their neighbors. Grace, embodying the spirit of Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin in Home Alone, has a habit of playing pranks which will later come in handy.

Winner of SXSW’s narrative grand jury award, “Raging Grace” deserves ample credit both for what it is and what it is not. But it’s difficult to be much more detailed in any appraisal of this cunning thriller without prematurely releasing cats from bags. On the other hand, it is safe to say that Paris Zarcilla, the British-born Filipino writer-director here making his feature debut, does an impressive job of infusing scary movie conventions with the potent urgency of a sharply observed social critique.
Right from the start, Zarcilla generates a compelling rooting interest in his protagonist: Joy (Max Eigenmann), a single Filipina mom who’s trying to maintain a low profile while working at various housekeeping jobs — mostly for well-off folks who sound condescending even during the most innocuous conversational gambits — and saving to purchase a gray-market visa so she and Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), her mischievous young daughter,...

This past weekend at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, first-time feature filmmaker Paris Zarcilla celebrated the world premiere of Raging Grace (which was also just honored with a Grand Jury Award from the festival yesterday), a genre-bending examination of the U.K.’s racial and class divides, the story follows a struggling Filipina home care worker (Max Eigenmann) who is just doing her best to support herself and her young daughter, Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), all while navigating the demands of her upper-class clientele.
Daily Dead spoke with Zarcilla, as well as producer Chi Thai, over the weekend in support of Raging Grace’s debut, and the duo discussed the personal nature of the film’s script, working with Eigenmann and Boadilla, and more.

There’s a powerful social commentary running through U.K. horror flick Raging Grace that’s not always served by the film itself, which is neither scary nor all that convincing when it rummages through the toolbox of familiar genre tropes.
And yet, this debut feature from British-born Filipino writer-director Paris Zarcilla gets its message across despite all the jump-scares and haunted house hysteria. That message is simple but effective: In a world where immigrants toil at the behest of a privileged ruling class, to the point where they’re sometimes more indentured servants than free individuals, the horrors of everyday life far outweigh anything that a movie could invent.
Much of Raging Grace explores that ongoing system of exploitation, following a single Filipino mom, Joy (Max Eigenmann), who cleans swanky London houses to make a living and pay for an overpriced visa that will allow her to stay in England.
