On Friday, June 13, 1980, the devout and do-gooding Candy Montgomery caused a stir in her Dallas community when she was arrested for killing her friend Betty Gore with 41 ax blows. When put on trial, Candy claimed that she killed Betty in self-defense. What was especially scandalous was that this argument worked in court, and Candy was acquitted. Now, over 40 years later, the case has been revisited on the small screen, though not in your traditional true-crime documentary fashion.
In the golden age of the true-crime era, it was only a matter of time until this shocking story made it to the small screen in serialized drama form. Hulu stepped up to the task first in 2022 with "Candy," a five-episode limited series that stars Jessica Biel in the titular role. Then, Max followed suit in April by taking on the story with the true-crime miniseries "Love & Death," which stars Elizabeth Olsen as the central character.

HBO/Max’s Love & Death is, in the words of its director, Lesli Linka Glatter, about an American tragedy. Following Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen), the seven-part limited series examines a Texas woman who seemingly had it all — the perfect family, the perfect marriage — but there was something darker under the surface. After she embarks on an affair with Jesse Plemons’ Allan Gore, the picture-perfect facade fades away. And the tragedy that unfolded is a shocking one: When Gore’s wife, Betty (Lily Rabe), discovers the affair, she — at least according to Montgomery’s testimony — attacked her husband’s mistress with an ax, at which point Montgomery snapped and struck Gore 41 times with the weapon.
The 1980 murder has compelled readers since it was written about in Texas Monthly — so much so that Love & Death is the second time the crime has received the limited series treatment (following last year’s Candy,...

Max’s “Love & Death” revived 1970s Texas suburbia through the direction of the show’s costume designer, Audrey Fisher, and production designer, Suzuki Ingerslev.
The limited series tells the true story of the murder of Betty Gore (Lily Rabe) by Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) after Betty discovered that Candy was having an affair with her husband, Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons). The story made headlines through Candy’s sensational trial.
The designers sourced products from all over the country and enlisted help from costume warehouses, rag houses, thrift stores, antique shops, tile manufacturers, wallpaper printers and Facebook Marketplace.
Here, Ingerslev and Fisher break down some of the looks for Variety.
Ingerslev: I glorified it a little bit without making it too precious. Our point of storytelling is to make sure that people know what period they’re in. There are key elements that are always going to trigger that. You...

Lily Rabe had heard about the Candy Montgomery-Betty Gore case, but it wasn’t until Nicole Kidman, an executive producer on Love & Death, reached out to her about playing Betty that she began to research.
“It always excites me to hear, ‘It’s so different from anything you’ve done,'” Rabe tells The Hollywood Reporter about her conversation with Kidman. “I always love when it’s like, ‘This is nothing like you and nothing like anything you’ve done.'”
What Rabe would find in her research and portrayal of Betty — the real-life Texas housewife who was murdered in the 1980s by her friend Candy Montgomery, played in the series by Elizabeth Olsen, when she was inexplicably struck by an ax 41 times — that she was able to relate to her more than she anticipated as she began to understand her more. “Betty is handled throughout the story,...

Max is touting strong viewership for its true-crime limited drama series Love & Death.
The streaming service says that the Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons series has become its number one most-watched Max original limited series globally.
Previous limited series for the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned service, which didn’t give any hard numbers for Love & Death, include Station Eleven, Dmz and The Staircase.
It also noted that the limited series, which comes from writer David E. Kelley and director Lesli Linka Glatter, had the biggest launch of any Max original in 2023. However, there haven’t been any other big original drama or comedy launches this year – Love & Death has been its first original live-action scripted title to launch out of the U.S. since Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and Rap Sh!t in July 2022, although it has launched series such as animated comedy Fired on Mars...

Elizabeth Olsen is taking viewers behind-the-scenes of her and co-star Jesse Plemons’ intimacy scenes in “Love & Death”.
The actress stars as the infamous Candy Montgomery in the Max drama miniseries, which premiered last month, opposite Plemons’ Allan Gore. Based on a true story, the characters have an affair that starts off awkward and childlike.
While chatting with Elle, Olsen, 34, said “it was really nice” working with Plemons, 35, on the intimate scenes because he “had suggested a [helpful] thought really early on — relating their relationship to that of people in high school.
“And I think when he had mentioned that, everything kind of fell into place of the emotional intelligence of where they are with relationships and their own personal experiences,” she continued. “They all got married so young and had kids immediately. Their personal experiences are almost out of a high schooler.

In an early episode of “Love and Death,” Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) goes shopping and tries on a fitted navy blue dress with red trim. It’s stylish, modern (for 1978) and perhaps not the first outfit you might call to mind when picturing a churchgoing housewife in a bucolic Dallas suburb in the late ’70s.
“My experience when designing costumes, especially when you’re working in a smaller town environment is that the fashion is a little bit behind because if you’re in New York, it’s like the fashion is coming in quickly. … Even in Dallas, there would be a more fashion-forward look, but I feel like in this smaller environment, everything is a little behind,” costume designer Audrey Fisher tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “That also allowed Candy and Sherry (Krysten Ritter) to be sort of the most interesting and cute, fashion-wise. “Love & Death” is set in the Dallas suburb of Wylie in the late ’70s, but in order to bring the small town to life for the true crime series, production designer Suzuki Ingerslev found the best locales with old school looks around the Texas capital. “Dallas has gotten so big now that these towns have also grown too, so they’re not these quintessential American towns,” she tells Gold Derby (watch above). “We ended up finding Austin as our home base and we found the best towns out there. It was amazing. Some of the towns were actually stuck in time. It was still a lot of work for us to do, but the bones were there and we could create this kind of world that we wanted to have our characters thriving in.”
That world was a picturesque churchgoing community where everything seems quaint and lovely and “normal” on the surface.

If you glance at the soundtrack listing for “Love & Death,” you’ll basically find a greatest hits collection of bangers from the ’70s. Set from 1978-80, the HBO Max limited series features tunes from Bee Gees, Janis Joplin, Al Green, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond, to name a few, culled by music supervisor Robin Urdang. “It’s one of my favorite eras,” she tells Gold Derby (watch above). “A lot of the songs were scripted originally because David E. Kelley and Lesli Linka Glatter had in mind songs that they wanted to use. When I read the script and saw that in there, I was like, ‘Oh, my God! This is like my favorite music. I have to do the show.'”

On the HBO Max limited series “Love & Death,” Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) reinvents herself several times, beginning as a churchgoing Texas housewife and ending as a pariah on trial for a brutal axe murder. And her wardrobe is an integral part of her journey, which made working on “Love & Death” both a challenge and a delight for costume designer Audrey Fisher. “It’s always fun for a costume designer to create a character within a character,” she told IndieWire. Fisher designed over a hundred costumes for Candy; here are a handful of examples that track the character’s transformation throughout the show.
“Love & Death” begins in the summer of 1978, when Candy is a well-liked member of her Methodist community. Fisher researched ’70s fashions and scoured magazines like Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping to find looks for Candy, who she felt would be just a little more lively and...

Jesse Plemons is a very good actor, and that’s why his lackluster performance in HBO’s Love & Death demands scrutiny. The problem is most pronounced in Episode 4, “Do No Evil,” when his character Allan Gore discovers his wife Betty (Lily Rabe) has been murdered. As Allan processes a phone call from the sheriff and races home from a business trip to comfort his daughter, the actor does what could be called “the Jesse Plemons thing.” But while this approach has served him well in many other projects, this time, something’s off.

The name Candy Montgomery is familiar to many. But after the first three episodes of Love & Death, people will better understand the woman who has been known as the housewife who struck her friend 41 times with an axe.
“I oddly think we made the show she would want to have made,” Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Candy, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We really defend her, without trying to let her completely off the hook. But we are telling, I think, her story.”
The seven-part Max series written by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Undoing and many more) released its first three episodes before moving to a weekly release. On Wednesday evening, the cast and crew of Max’s Love & Death gathered in West Hollywood to celebrate the series premiere.
From Max and Lionsgate Television, it’s based on a true story, centered on real-life 1980s housewife Candy Montgomery (played by Elizabeth Olsen) who was accused of the brutal axe murder of her friend Betty Gore (Lily Rabe). “Love & Death,” which debuts on HBO Max (soon to be just Max) on April 27, is the second TV telling of the story of Candy Montgomery in less than a year.
The first rendition was Hulu’s “Candy,” starring Jessica Biel in the leading role of Candy and Melanie Lynskey as her neighbor whom she eventually murders, Betty Gore. The series streamed in May 2022, nearly one year ago.
Now, Elizabeth Olsen steps into the role of Montgomery, a housewife from Fairview, Tx., while Lily Rabe portrays Betty, the second-grade teacher. Both shows are based on a true story, explained below. The latest, written by David E. Kelley, draws in part from a two-part Texas Monthly account of the crime.
In 1978, Montgomery was a 29-year-old mother of two when she began an affair with Allan Gore (portrayed in the latest limited series by Jesse Plemmons), who was married to Betty, one of Candy’s friends.

The horribly tragic true story of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore has been grist for several true-crime dramas. During the summer of 1980, Montgomery stopped by her friend Gore's home to pick up a swimsuit for Gore's daughter. Gore allegedly confronted Montgomery, who was engaged in an affair with her husband. A fight ensued, and, per Montgomery, she murdered Gore in self-defense. The sticking point here is the viciousness of the killing: Gore was struck 41 times with an axe. Though Montgomery was found not guilty, many people in the Dallas suburb of Wylie, Texas believed she had murdered Gore in cold blood, and protested the verdict.

This article contains details of real life events that will likely spoil future episodes of Love & Death.
Elizabeth Olsen is the lead in HBO Max’s new true crime limited drama series Love & Death. Olsen’s journey into the bloody genre sees her take on the role of murderer Candy Montgomery for seven episodes alongside Jesse Plemons.
In recent years several true crime dramas have been major hits for streamers, from the likes of Netflix’s controversial Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story to Hulu’s The Girl from Plainville. So it was no surprise then that HBO Max decided to take part too and add Candy Montgomery’s story to its stream. However, this is not the first time Candy’s story has been told.
In 1990, Stephen Gyllenhaal made a film inspired by the story called A Killing in a Small Town starring Barbara Hershey and Lee Garlington.

Will the Best Actor Emmy come down to a battle between the Ce-Bros? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the first big “Succession” category move and what that means.
After two nominations in supporting, Kieran Culkin will submit in lead this year for the fourth and final season of the drama series frontrunner. The placement is not wrong — Roman (Culkin), Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) have very much been the leads this season, especially in the wake of Logan’s (Brian Cox) death. But the conventional thinking was that Culkin’s material thus far has made him a shoo-in for the supporting trophy, and now it’ll be harder for him to win in lead, especially opposite former champ Strong. But will it be? We discuss why you shouldn’t count slime puppy out.

By now, most true crime aficionados have heard of Candy Montgomery, but even if they hadn’t, David E. Kelley‘s latest HBO collaboration, Max‘s Love & Death, will surely fill them in with the help of Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons. She plays Candy, a well-liked member of her late ’70s-set Texas community where she’s an active member in the church, a wife, and a mother. He plays Allan Gore, also a member of the church, he’s the husband of Candy’s friend Betty (Lily Rabe) and the object of her desire when the show kicks off as Candy propositions Allan to have an affair. Their tryst is considered at length before the pair ever acts on their mutual attraction, but the resulting events ultimately lead to the second half of the show’s title, Love & Death. For Olsen, it was about striking a balance between...

“Love & Death” feels familiar, as it should. The Max drama is the second series in less than a year to take on the same story: the case of Candy Montgomery, a Texas housewife who killed her friend and neighbor Betty Gore with an ax in 1980.
This version follows closely on the heels of “Candy,” which aired on Hulu last year. The proximity practically demands comparison, and it’s tempting to draw up a laundry list of differences and call it a review. “Love & Death” casts Elizabeth Olsen as Montgomery, while “Candy” stars Jessica Biel. “Candy” is inflected with horror, while “Love & Death” is more naturalist. “Candy” flashes back from the day of the murder, which saw Montgomery toggle from brutal homicide to eerily banal errands, while “Love & Death” is more linear in structure. The effect is not unlike that of 2019’s competing documentaries about the viral quagmire known as Fyre Festival,...

As fodder for true-crime dramas, the gruesome facts of the Candy Montgomery case are hard to top: On June 13, 1980, nearly two years after Candy (played here by Elizabeth Olsen) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) began their extramarital affair, Candy stopped in for a visit with his wife, Betty (Lily Rabe), and somehow wound up hitting her 41 times with an ax.
The premise is so irresistible, in fact, that it was chronicled just last year in Hulu’s Candy — which, though certainly not Love & Death‘s fault, does it few favors. Creator David E. Kelley does differentiate his seven-part HBO Max miniseries somewhat with a more restrained and empathetic tone, in contrast to Candy‘s sour sensationalism. But despite generous pacing and some fine lead performances, his show has too little light to shed on its notorious central case.

The facts of the case: on June 13, 1980, 30-year-old housewife Candy Montgomery killed her friend Betty Gore with an axe in Wylie, Texas.
But why?
According to Candy, and her legal team, this was an act of self-defense. But Gore was struck 41 times, and after the murder, Montgomery cleaned herself up and tried to pretend nothing happened, denying any involvement in the murder until her trial. If this sounds familiar to you (beyond the fact that it's a true story), that's because this sordid tale was previously covered last year in the Hulu miniseries "Candy," starring Jessica Biel as Candy Montgomery and Melanie Lynskey as Betty Gore.
Now, HBO Max and writer-creator David E. Kelley attempt to cover the same ground with their miniseries "Love and Death." The fact that the series arrives after "Candy" is unfortunate, since the shows tell almost the same basic story in the same basic manner,...

The phrase “if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ’em all” is rarely all that useful when discussing popular entertainment. TV thrives on genre stories, telling seemingly infinite variations of doctor, detective, and demonic procedurals, all without losing the audience’s hard-earned attention. Plus, dismissing any story as nothing more than a carbon copy of what you’ve already seen typically overlooks the craft of good television and/or its evolution. Sure, you could argue if you’ve already seen “Columbo” or “Monk,” then you “get” what “Poker Face” is going to be — but then you’d be dismissing Natasha Lyonne’s smoky star power, Rian Johnson’s deft direction, and the artistic attributes within a smart “howcatchem.”
But when it comes to “Love and Death,” the (not HBO) Max original series from writer/producer David E. Kelley, previously released options prove as plentiful as they are hard to ignore.

In 1980, Texas housewife Candy Montgomery killed her friend Betty Gore. The murder split both the Montgomery and Gore families apart, since part of the motivation was that Candy was having an affair with Betty's husband, Allan. Over 40 years later, the case has garnered new attention - not because of new evidence, but because it's inspired two miniseries about the murder.
Elizabeth Olsen stars as Candy in HBO Max's "Love & Death," out in April, alongside Jesse Plemons, Lily Rabe, and Tom Pelphrey. But Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey previously starred in Hulu's 2022 "Candy," which also dramatized the case.
The case of Betty Gore's murder is a perplexing one, filled with unbelievable details that remain shocking 40 years after the killing took place. Ahead, here is the true story of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore's murder.

True crime stories can be tantalizing, giving us a glimpse into the horrors of humanity from the comfort of our couches. There are tons of true crime documentaries on almost every streaming service, but sometimes we get dramatic retellings that make the monstrosities much more cinematic (and entertaining). When it comes to the case of Candy Montgomery, the suburban Texas housewife who murdered her neighbor with an ax, there are now two star-studded prestige miniseries to tell the tale.
Hulu's "Candy," starring Jessica Biel as the murderous mama, debuted on Hulu in 2022 and received mixed reviews from critics who praised the performances in particular. (You can read ours here!) Desperate housewives never got out of style on television, and in “Love & Death,” Elizabeth Olsen is playing a particularly troubled one. The “Wandavision” and “Sorry for Your Loss” actor stars in the final trailer for the HBO Max series, released this Thursday.
In “Love & Death,” Olsen portrays Candy Montgomery, a real-life Texas housewife charged in 1980 for the murder of her friend and neighbor Betty Gore after Gore was found dead in her house from 41 axe wounds. During Montgomery’s trial, it came to light that she was cheating on her husband Pat with Gore’s husband Allan, and she pled self-defense by claiming that Gore attacked her after discovering evidence of the affair. Montgomery was eventually declared not guilty by the jury, in a verdict that prompted outcry from Gore’s family and their small-town community.

Much like The X-Files, no one ever really stays dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch seemingly met her end in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when she sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold. But when the Scarlet Witch inevitably returns, Elizabeth Olsen told ScreenRant that she hopes she can explore the “humor” and “redemption” of the character.
“We can do anything with her now! I feel like we’ve done so much,” Elizabeth Olsen said. “Now, we can really have fun; I feel like there’s a lot more humor to be had with her. She’s often the emotion of a story, and I’m curious to see what we can explore. And hopefully [we can] give her some redemption.” After spending much of WandaVision dealing with her grief over losing Vision during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Scarlet Witch went full-villain in Doctor Strange...

Television is a relatively new indulgence for South by Southwest. What started as a music conference and market for the exchange of pop cultural ideas in 1986 quickly grew into a full-blown film festival by 1994. It wasn’t until 2014, however, that TV fully got its due with the addition of “Episodic” programming to the SXSW Film Festival.
Now, nearly 10 years after television first arrived to the Austin, Texas get-together, the People’s Medium is well and truly having its moment at SXSW 2023. No fewer than 20 TV shows will have their premieres at SXSW this time around, running the gamut from tentpole streaming sci-fi to little-known pilots in search of a forever home
With that in mind, here is everything that SXSW attendees and TV fans in general can look forward to from SXSW 2023’s Episodic output.

We’re living in a true crime boom in both scripted and unscripted television — but “Love & Death” director and exec producer Lesli Linka Glatter said she hopes her new HBO Max series will be seen as much more than that.
Sure, the series involves the true story of accused (but acquitted) axe murderer Candy Montgomery, played by Elizabeth Olsen. “There is a horrible true crime at the core of this, but we didn’t want it to be just a true crime story,” Glatter said Saturday in a panel discussion after the premiere of “Love & Death” at the South by Southwest festival. And the show doesn’t shy away from Montgomery’s actions. But “it’s really, things are not what they appear to be. You have to go deeper to see what’s really going on. We really tried to look at the ‘how’ and ‘why’ rather than the ‘what.

In the opening hour of David E. Kelley’s “Love & Death,” Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) says that all of life is a competition. Everyone should be competing — even just a little — to give everything that dangerous edge. As a contender for the South by Southwest audience award, “Love & Death” is in fact competing with its premiere episode, which debuted at this festival on Saturday in front of a lively audience.
“We are so incredibly excited to be here,” executive producer and director Lesli Linka Glatter told the crowd before introducing Episode 1. She called SXSW “the perfect place to show our show for the first time. We made it here, it is a Texas story, I am a Texas human.”
“Love & Death” tells the true story of Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen), who had an affair with Gore starting in 1978 and eventually killed his wife Betty (Lily Rabe) with an axe.

Fox is flipping genders on Starsky & Hutch, developing a female-led reboot of the popular 1970s cop series, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The update — which hails from writers/showrunners Sam Sklaver (Prodigal Son) and Elizabeth Peterson (The Resident) — centers on Detectives Sasha Starsky and Nicole Hutchinson, who “solve crimes in the offbeat town of Desert City while staying true to their friendship, their awesomeness, and somehow also trying to unravel the mystery behind who sent their fathers to prison 15 years ago for a crime they didn’t commit.”

Elizabeth Olsen isn’t satisfied in the trailer for Love & Death.
The official first look at the HBO Max true-crime drama (below) focuses on Candy Montgomery (Olsen) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons), as one-half of two churchgoing couples enjoying small town family life in Texas… until somebody picks up an axe, as the logline reads (and, as the true story goes).
“I have done all the things a wife is supposed to do. The house. The meals. Where is the payback?” Olsen’s Candy asks in voiceover, expressing her suburban housewife ennui, before propositioning Plemons’ Allan: “Would you be interested in having an affair?”
The limited series is written by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Undoing) and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, Mad Men), who helms the majority of the episodes. The seven-episode series premieres with the first three installments on April 27, followed by a weekly release on Thursdays.

Elizabeth Olsen is yet again trapped in a seemingly idyllic but actually quite sinister suburban setting in “Love & Death,” the new based-on-a-true-story series from David E. Kelley co-starring Jesse Plemons. And it looks juicy (watch the trailer above).
The official synopsis for “Love & Death” describes the new HBO Max original series as “the true story of Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore – two churchgoing couples enjoying their smalltown Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.” Judging by the shots of a blood-splattered Olsen walking down a hall, she seems to be the one who picks up said axe.
Kelley wrote the new series and Lesli Linka directed the first first four and final episode of the seven-episode limited series. Kelley is also responsible for HBO sensations “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing.” He is currently working on a bunch...
