Amazon is diving into The Swarm, snatching up rights for its Prime Video service across sub-Saharan Africa for the ecological thriller from Game of Thrones producer Frank Doelger.
The limited series, adapted from Frank Schätzing’s international best-seller, tells the story of a series of escalating disasters emerging from the world’s oceans. As scientists around the globe rush to discover their cause, it becomes clear that there is something bigger at play: an intelligent life force, dwelling in the deeps that is manipulating all life below the surface.
Barbara Eder (Barbarians, Concordia), Luke Watson (Ripper Street) and Philipp Stölzl (The Physician) directed the series, which features an ensemble cast including Alexander Karim (Dying of the Light), Cécile de France (The New Pope), Leonie Benesch (Babylon Berlin, The Crown), Barbara Sukowa (Hannah Arendt) and Takuya Kimura (2046, I Come With The Rain). Doelger produced through his Intaglio Films, together with Eric Welbers,...

Why complicate matters? “The Swarm” – which premiered its first three episodes at the Berlinale Series – is one of those expensive pan-global coproductions necessitating copious logistics, not least a carefully observed quota of performers from each territory pumping money into the production pot. Its opener generates a not inconsiderable carbon footprint, whisking us from Peru to Canada and thence the Scottish Highlands.
The series title, meanwhile, invites confusion with not just 1978’s infamous Michael Caine venture – a disaster movie in all senses – but Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ Prime Video-bound “Swarm,” itself launching next month.
In and of itself, however, this eight-parter proves reassuringly straightforward and familiar. Its briny pulp – dredged from Frank Schätzing’s 2004 novel, a Central European bestseller originally earmarked for big-screen adaptation by the late Dino De Laurentiis – preys heavily on viewer fears of ecological collapse, and what might be lurking for us all beneath the planet’s watery depths.

Exclusive: Dutch producer to resume his long-standing relationship with Peter Greenaway.
Dutch producer Kees Kasander is to resume his long-standing relationship with British director Peter Greenaway – and they already have several new projects together in the pipeline.
Greenaway’s current production - Eisenstein in Guanajuato (sold by Rezo) - is the first film he has made without Kasander for many years. With Kasander unavailable, it was produced instead by fellow Dutch producers Femke Wolting and Bruno Felix of Submarine alongside Cristina Velasco.
Now, Kasander and Greenaway are back in business together and already looking a long way ahead with 15 projects together.
The next film they are making together is Walking To Paris, a biopic about artist Constantin Brancusi. When he was a young man, Brancusi walked all the way from Romania to Paris. Stealth are in talks to handle international sales. The aim is to start shooting in the autumn.

We also learned that, on Friday night, the group all ate at Stack in a private dining room, where they watched the Los Angeles Clippers take on Oklahoma City Thunder during Game 3 of the NBA playoffs. Our source added that during the day on Saturday, Kutcher and company hung out at Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria, before hitting up Haze Nightclub at Aria later that night. It's believed that the 36-year-old actor's pregnant fiancée Mila Kunis was not in Vegas with...

★★★☆☆ Completing the BFI's accumulative DVD collection of ghost story adaptations, which over the years became a staple of the BBC's Christmas and New Year programming, come two contemporary made chillers from renowned British writer M. R. James. Both A View From A Hill (2005), directed by Luke Watson and starring Mark Letheren, and follow-up Number 13 (2006), directed by Pier Wilkie with Greg Wise taking the lead, are clear examples of the Auntie Beeb trying to revive the tradition they started in the late 1960s - though unfortunately, without quite the same degree of sinister success.

Hammer Blu-rays The Devil Rides Out (1968, dir. Terence Fisher)
Hammer applies its trademark Gothic veneer with considerably greater care than usual in this, the second and best of the company's three stabs at the satanic stylings of author Dennis Wheatley. Christopher Lee comes over to the light for a rare foray as central hero the Duc de Richleau, teaming up with friend Rex van Rijn (Leon Greene) to prevent the evil Satanist Mocata (Charles Gray) from enmeshing the son of his old friend (Patrick Mower) into a devil-worshipping cult.
The Devil Rides Out is perhaps best remembered for what Lee argues in his commentary to be Hammer's most enduring image, that of our heroes fighting a series of spectral and psychological nemeses from within the protective confines of a ritual circle. And yet the most chilling scene contains no special effects, but is instead a simple conversation between the wife...

Lee and Watson are executive producing the project alongside Carolyn Bernstein, Todd Cohen and Howard T. Owens of Reveille and Black, Ben Cooley and Priyanka Mattoo of Electric Dynamite. For his role as recently fledged U.S. Marshal Luke Watson on NBC's new Monday-night fugitive-hunt drama "Chase," Jesse Metcalfe sports a close-cropped, almost military haircut.
"It's definitely my call," he tells Zap2it over dinner at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., just before filming on the series began in Houston, Texas. NBC’s newly touted, episodic action/drama Chase, is surprising. A nice cops and robbers procedural that capitalizes on the trend of tough female characters. Its The Closer meets Saving Grace, by way of Justified, from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Chase has the perfect team feel that makes successful shows like NCIS and CSI work well.
I have always enjoyed the world of Us Marshals and always thought that a good series revolving around them would be interesting. Unfortunately for NBC, Justified is about the most perfect way to do it without becoming a TV version of the sequel from The Fugitive. What is fortunate about Chase is that the series finds a middle ground, and though I do not like procedurals like this series, I think it’s very well done. The newest Jerry Bruckheimer-produced action procedural is NBC's "Chase," starring Kelli Giddish and Cole Hauser as the leaders of a group of Houston-based U.S. Marshals. The premiere episode is certainly action-packed, but the show is going to have to find its heart in order to succeed.
In the premiere, the Marshals, which also include Amaury Nolasco, Rose Rollins and Jesse Metcalf, track Mason Boyle (Travis Fimmel), a felon who escaped from prison five years ago and has been robbing and shooting families as he tries to escape to Mexico.
The action comes fast and furious, but by episode's end more is known (and more sympathy felt) about fugitive Boyle than it is for any of the main characters. The few nuggets dropped in about Kelly Giddish's Annie Frost are heavy-handed and obvious. Oh, a female cop who had a traumatic childhood? It'd be more surprising if she grew up in a normal,...

On Monday, Sept. 20, NBC premieres the action thriller "Chase," which features Jesse Metcalfe ("Desperate Housewives") as Luke Watson, the newest member of the U.S. Marshals Service's Houston Enforcement & Apprehension Task Force (H.E.A.T.).
"He comes from an affluent family," says Metcalfe of Watson, "and his father's somewhat of a political bigshot, although I don't know specifically what he does. That's why Luke joined the U.S. Marshals Service, to make his father proud, to prove himself to his father, to get out from under his father's shadow."
But before "Chase" launches, fans can see Metcalfe leave politics behind for very different reasons in the Hallmark Channel movie "Fairfield Road," premiering Saturday, Sept. 11.
"I play a character named Noah McManus," Metcalfe says. "He's a political aide to the mayor of Boston. He's very ambitious and also very idealistic, which doesn't survive too well. Quickly, he becomes disenchanted with working for with the mayor of Boston,...

Joining the cast ensemble of NBC's "Chase", Jesse Metcalfe shares that the new show is "very physical". During a phone interview with PopEater, the boy toy of Eva Longoria's Gabrielle in "Desperate Housewives" admitted that he did a lot of running for the police procedural drama.
"It's a very physical show," the 31-year-old actor spilled. "There's a lot of running. I definitely added a few things to my workout regime. We also got a lot of specialized training with the FBI and with the U.S. Marshals. We shot different kinds of weapons, we learned how to sweep and clear a house, bit of profiling and tracking strategies."
Despite the specialized training and the workout, the "John Tucker Must Die" hunk said he will stick to television. Asked whether he would be able to pinch hit if a Marshall called in sick, he responded, "Pinch hit for an actual U.

"There is a bit of humour, but this is really a hard-nosed, kind of action-packed drama," he said. "It's really about authenticity and gritty reality. So, I mean, it's a huge departure from Desperate Housewives." Metcalfe also revealed that he is (more)...

"My Name Is Earl" star Jason Lee is jumping back into TV as the lead in "Delta Blues," TNT's pilot executive produced by George Clooney.
Additionally, he has a live-action project in the works at Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and has signed on to direct the indie film "Get Back."
The hourlong "Delta Blues," from Clooney and Grant Heslov's Smokehouse Pictures and Warner Horizon, centers on Dwight Hendricks (Lee), a Memphis police officer who lives with his mother and moonlights as an Elvis impersonator.
Michael Wright, TNT and TBS head of programming, called Lee "the ideal choice to bring the compelling, off-kilter Dwight Hendricks to life."
Clark Johnson is directing the pilot from a script by Liz M. Garcia and Joshua Harto. Clooney, Heslov, Garcia and Johnson serve as executive produces, with Henry Bronchtein and Abby Wolf-Weiss co-exec producing and Harto producing.

- I'm not sure what to make from the Brit List. A trio of films from last year's batch (Nowhere Boy, Never Let Me Go and The Debt) that effectively received a greenlight, and are now in the can, and in the list's inaugural year, Grant Heslov's Men Who Stare at Goats was the top vote-getter. Now in its 3rd year, the "List" of the most liked and recommended unproduced screenplays in the UK and Ireland is complied by only 40 people in the industry. You've got some attention-getting projects among the list below, that I'm sure we'll be discussing in the near future and the Playlist made a good round-up, but for the sake of getting to the cream of the crop, I'll look at the top three screenplays instead. 1.
