We all know that The Super Mario Bros. was one of the biggest box office hits of the year, even shooting like Bullet Bill towards the front of the all-time worldwide haul for an animated film. Yet, surprisingly, a sequel hasn’t officially been announced. But Jack Black – who voiced Bowser – has an idea of how it could play out when it finally gets the greenlight.
Jack Black told Variety (on their Awards Circuit Podcast) that while he has yet to hear anything from Illumination, he does hope he can reprise Bowser. “It has been radio silence…The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business.” With that, Black said, “I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2.

The recent Nintendo Direct delivered plenty of surprise announcements. Nobody could have predicted a Super Mario RPG remake or a new Detective Pikachu game, but nothing surprised audiences more than the reveal of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
To be frank, most gamers probably expected a Super Mario Odyssey sequel rather than another 2D Super Mario Bros. game, but, judging by the trailer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be a worthy addition to any Switch owner’s library. Plus, even though the video teased some of the game’s features and levels, it might have revealed so much more than that.
From Wonder Seeds to Elephant Luigis, here are some of the most notable secrets I spotted in Super Mario Bros. Wonder‘s trailer.

While streamers typically get by on thrifty marketing budgets, pushing content largely on their menus, most motion picture studios, like Universal, still have all the superpowers in the world to blast a movie out of a canon.
But here’s something to keep in mind as we detail Universal’s promo playbook below in propelling Illumination/Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros Movie to several opening records.: IP and marketing machine alone don’t propel a movie to great box office heights.
‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’
The movie also needs to be great. As subjective and simple-minded as that sounds, when it comes to the feature take of the ever-popular video game Super Mario Bros, it meant staying faithful to the source material itself: The game. And that’s exactly what Illumination and filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic did in this second big screen go-round of the Nintendo game.

It was true in the early '90s and it remains true now: Mario is the king of video games. To this day, there's arguably no mascot more recognizable for an industry worth billions and, by the end of the '80s, Hollywood was starting to realize this whole video game thing was here to stay. Naturally, that meant capitalizing on the popularity with a major motion picture. It also meant that Nintendo's "Super Mario Bros." was the white whale of IP that any studio could hope to get their hands on. In 1993, the result of producer Roland Joffe's unlikely bid to win those rights hit theaters and set the tone for video game movies for years to come --...

On the eve of its 30th birthday, Super Mario Bros.––the 1993 film, not the groundbreaking video game––might be due for critical reappraisal. Dubbed “a complete waste of time and money” by Roger Ebert, rejected by Mario’s custodians at Nintendo, and described with utter contempt by its own stars, it has enjoyed three decades of cultural life as a punchline about the dismal standards of game-to-movie adaptations. Yet the tonally confused kids’ movie, viewed in retrospect of a fully Marvelized Hollywood, recalls a time when genuinely weird, mutant art could sometimes break out of the franchise-blockbuster laboratories. Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the spousal duo behind cult cyberpunk sensation Max Headroom, it liberally reimagines the vaguely defined Mario lore of plumbers, princesses, mushrooms, and dinosaurs into a gothic urban fever dream. Pursuing a kidnapped girl, the titular brothers––Bob Hoskins as Mario, adopting a wheezing, gesticulating meatball...

The conceit of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is that Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are humans from Earth who, thanks to a rogue pipe, are sucked into the alternate dimension of the Mushroom Kingdom. Said realm is populated by curious mushroom-shaped people, talking apes, sentient penguins, and an evil fire-breathing Koopa who seeks a wife. There also appears to be another human living there in the form of Princess Peach, the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, although it's implied that she may be from a tertiary dimension altogether.
The Mario Bros. don't just come from Earth, but from Brooklyn specifically, and are of Italian descent. That means their local neighborhood is replete with recognizable Earth items. Although, seeing as "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is based on a Nintendo game from the 1980s, all the Mario Bros.' Earth ephemera are based directly on 1980s Nintendo games.

Mario gets around. The guy has appeared in over 200 video games over the decades. He’s been on so many adventures, has teamed up with Rabbids, punched Cloud Strife in the face, swam against Dr. Robotnik at the Olympics, and has refereed for both Mike Tyson and Mike Tyson’s non-union equivalent. He’s been played by a professional wrestler, a Shakespearian actor, and now Star-Lord.
Speaking of the new Chris Pratt movie, while the movie features plenty of big names and sights from Mario’s games, one surprising inclusion is an appearance by Foreman Spike: Mario and Luigi’s bitter former boss. Foreman Spike was Mario’s rival in the Nes game Wrecking Crew and while he’s made a few appearances since then, he’s a very obscure pull.
Then again, Mario has done so much that his supporting cast (and his supporting cast’s supporting cast) has many forgotten names.

While the first trailer for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” focused on Jack Black’s King Koopa/Bowser and the visual splendor of the Mushroom Kingdom, this second look offers up a better, longer look at Mario himself. The spot offers a mix of high fantasy adventure tropes and IP-specific beats like Mario being thrashed by Donkey Kong, Mario wearing the raccoon suit and a final beat featuring essentially a massive game of “Mario Kart.” “Super Smash Bros.” may have to wait until the sequel.
That closer look includes Chris Pratt’s preemptively controversial vocals, which mostly sound like, well, Chris Pratt playing a blue collar plumber who embarks on a fantastical adventure. The notion of Chris Pratt voicing Mario is one of those things where the perpetually online rant and whine but general audiences either don’t care or approve of the choice because they like the actor.

Nintendo fans, rejoice: The second trailer for the “Super Mario Bros.” movie is here, and there are even more Mario video game references than the first.
The new trailer gives a first look at Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach, several power-ups (like Mario’s Tanooki suit and a fire flower) and the iconic Rainbow Road course from “Mario Kart.”
After the first trailer made headlines with Chris Pratt’s head-scratching take on Mario’s Italian voice, the new trailer debuts even more Mushroom Kingdom residents. It starts off with Mario facing off against Donkey Kong in a massive gladiator ring overseen by Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Princess Peach and another ape who appears to be Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen). Just like a “Super Smash Bros.” showdown, Donkey Kong pummels Mario to a pulp.
Next, we hear Charlie Day’s voice as Luigi for the first time...

The Nintendo Direct YouTube channel unveiled the second trailer today for Illumination’s Super Mario Bros Movie.
In it, we see Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) entering a cheering arena where he faces off with Donkey Kong voiced by Seth Rogen. Mario jumps and the big ape catches the little guy in mid air before whacking him repeatedly.
Meanwhile, Koopa has Luigi in his grip.
“One problem, there’s a human who has a mustache just like you,” says the ogre voiced by Jack Black.
We also see Anya Taylor Joy’s Princess Peach for the first time.
“There’s a huge universe out there with a lot of galaxies,” Peach tells little mushroom guy, Toad.
You can watch below — there’s even a Mario Race cart scene you can count on in the Universal released title.
Super Mario Bros Movie happens on Easter Weekend, April 7-9.

Asked if he had any regrets in his career, Bob Hoskins didn’t hesitate. “The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Bros,” the actor said. “It was a f***in’ nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent.”
He was speaking in 2007, 14 years after starring in the notoriously dysfunctional take on the hit Nintendo video game. And yet the tremor in his voice had been unmistakable. Hoskins had graced the occasional turkey across his decades in the industry. Super Mario Bros was clearly a different class of clunker. He sounded more than slightly scarred by the experience.
Video game adaptations are so ubiquitous nowadays that we tend not to even think of them in those terms any more. The recent Detective Pikachu was received as a surreal kids comedy starring Ryan Reynolds. Last year’s Rampage was sold as a vehicle for Dwayne Johnson...
