- His hobby was stamp-collecting. He was an expert on stamps issued by Great Britain during WWI. His expertise gained him membership in the Royal Philatelic Society.
- After the war, he studied at the Yale School of Drama.
- He served in the Army in WWII, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a Bronze Star for valor, and a Purple Heart after being wounded in a mortar attack.
- He began acting in community theater as a child, and became assistant director when he was 13. In high school, he produced, directed, and acted in "Children's Playhouse", a weekly radio show broadcast on WKBO (Harrisburg, PA).
- Theater director and producer. He was also a play reader for Paramount Pictures, and a story editor for the CBS drama series Studio One (1948).
