There won’t be cross-play in the upcoming online role-playing game “Fallout 76,” and Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard blames a familiar culprit: Sony.
“You cannot do cross-play in ’76,'” Howard told German publication GameStar.de (via CNET) in a recent interview. “We’d really love that but right now we can’t. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like.”
Sony is under a lot of pressure right now thanks to the lack of cross-platform multiplayer on its PlayStation 4 console. Competitors Microsoft and Nintendo are allowing it in certain titles like “Fortnite,” “Rocket League,” and “Minecraft,” but Sony refuses to participate.
“We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe,” PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan said recently. “Exposing what in many cases are children to external...

The reason Sony won’t allow crossplay on the PlayStation 4 console with its Microsoft and Nintendo rivals is simple, according to former Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley. It’s all about the money.
“When I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money,” he tweeted on Monday. “They didn’t like someone buying something on a Xbox and it being used on a PlayStation. Simple as that. Dumb reason, but there it is.”

After a long and prestigious run at the helm Sony Online Entertainment – which has since parted ways with the Japanese publisher to become Daybreak Games – CEO and lead developer John Smedley has announced his decision to retire from the position.
Working as co-founder on a string of successful online-centric titles such as Everquest, DC Universe Online, PlanetSide 2 and H1Z1, Smedley’s role within the company was instrumental as it grew into one of the most efficient studios in the industry. In a statement provided to VentureBeat, Daybreak confirmed that it will now hand over all duties and internal responsibilities to Chief Operating Officer Russell Shanks.
“John Smedley will be taking some time off from the company for the near-term and transitioning to a different role to be determined,” a Daybreak representative said in a statement. “Upon finalization of his plans, further communication will be provided.”

Few video games can hold a candle to the way in which World of Warcraft shook up the genre of the Mmo since its inception in 2004, blazing its way to 12 million subscribers strong by the time the Cataclysm expansion rolled around. Since then, however, the numbers have began to decline gradually through time, with Activision’s most-recent update revealing the title’s paying audience has plateaued at around the 10 million mark. A substantial figure, no doubt, but according to Daybreak Games boss John Smedley, the heyday of the subscription-based Mmo “is over.”
Previously known as Sony Online Entertainment prior to February’s internal shake-up, Daybreak is best known for its zombie Mmo H1Z1, which follows the trend of more recent MMOs and Moba by offering up a free-to-play template before making revenue through cosmetics and other in-game purchases. Early Access is renown for shepherding early builds of games into the public’s eye that are, quite often, plagued with technical issues. Granted, this is the essence of the system, creating a feedback loop between end user and developer that helps the latter party iterate on ideas and, in theory, create a fully-fledged title worthy of its price tag.
But for Sony Online Entertainment’s zombie Mmo H1Z1, those first few days on Valve’s client hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. Having only been available to download for a short time, players have already criticized the way in which the studio has implemented paid-for content, with premium airdrops and the like running the risk of unbalancing the game — and indeed irking a fanbase before it is even released.

Sony Online Entertainment has still been hard at work on their upcoming zombie-survival game, H1Z1, and a lot of people are about to finally get their hands on it, as they've announced the game will be getting Early Access in January.
The announcement came yesterday:
Sony Online Entertainment (Soe) today announced that the much anticipated post-apocalyptic zombie survival Mmo, H1Z1, will be available via Steam Early Access on January 15, 2015 for $19.99 (Usd).
A little more details about the upcoming Early Access was given out from Soe's President John Smedley on a Reddit community post:
Hey folks,
After a lot of hard work, we've decided to make the release date January 15th, 2015. This gives us just enough time to polish what we have and put out something we'll be proud of and hopefully you'll be excited to play.
Why did it take longer than we originally thought? It's a fair question.

Sony has announced that its upcoming zombie survival title H1Z1 will make its debut on Steam Early Access on January 15, 2015.
Taking to Reddit, the publisher’s online entertainment boss, John Smedley detailed the status of the ambitious Mmo, stating that allowing players to experiment with the alpha build is the perfect method of approach for a game of this nature.

It's happened again, Ddos attacks have taken down online gaming services over the weekend...
In the early hours of Sunday (Us time), Sony's Psn was hit by a Ddos attack that eventually took the service offline, meaning players couldn't sign in to Psn, in turn preventing access to various games. Blizzard's Battle.net was also hit, and Xbox Live was affected as well. Sony was keen to point out, however, that no personal information has been accessed by the attack.
The PlayStation blog posted an official update:
“Like other major networks around the world, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.

The PlayStation Network was brought down this weekend allegedly by a hacker group whose Twitter handle is @LizardSquad who claims their intentions were meant to pressure Sony to spend more money on the PlayStation Network. It took Sony the entire weekend to bring the Network back online. Also this weekend, Lizard Squad also attacked Blizzard Entertainment and Microsoft’s Xbox Live network.
Most terrifyingly, however, was a tweet sent out by Lizard Squad to American Airlines implying there was a bomb threat on Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley’s plane. The flight was grounded and no explosive materials were found on board.
PlayStation Has Been Hacked Before
The cyber activist group Anonymous targeted the PlayStation Network in 2011 in retaliation for Sony attempting to stop hacks on their PS3 console. The attack compromised over 100 million Sony accounts. Both Qriocity and the PlayStation Network had to be taken down for over a month for repairs.

A trailer for Brighton Rock has arrived online. Remake, reimagining – whatever you choose to call it, director Rowan Joffe’s new vision sees the 1938 crime novel by Graham Greene updated to the 1960s. This means Mods, Rockers, skinny suits and selvedge turn-ups. Thankfully this two minute preview does not run away with the notion.
The Brighton Rock we all know and love was made in 1947, directed by John Boulting and starred Richard Attenborough as vicious local hood Pinkie Brown. Now we have Rowan Joffe (writer of The American) and Sam Riley (Franklyn, Control) in their place. Graham Greene’s book is a grim morality tale set against the backdrop of costal gang violence in post-War Britain. Boulting’s version is a noir classic with a memorable ending (co-scriptwriter Greene’s invention) that chills on every viewing.
It is impossible to deduce from two minutes what Joffe, Riley and co have brought to the table,...

The hotly anticipated DC Universe Online has been bumped back until early 2011 to make room for more external beta testing to work out the bugs. The Mmorpg, which was expected to hit shelves later this year, is being kicked to the back of the line once more to make sure it won't suck when it gets into your sweaty PC's. The President of Sony Online Entertainment, John Smedley, is blaming the delay on the simple fact that an Mmorpg is a pain to make. "DC Universe Online is the first game of its kind, and a truly massive undertaking -- the first action Mmo set in the DC Universe, the first Mmo on the PlayStation 3, and the first time the entire DC Universe will be accessible to millions of fans," said Smedley. If you pre-order the game before November 15th, you will gain access to the beta...

Sony Online Entertainment has revealed that its Mmo Free Realms has now almost reached five million registered users, according to Gamasutra. Following its launch in April this year, the family friendly free-to-play game managed to attract one million players in just 18 days.
