When Everly (Hayek) betrays her sadistic mob boss Taiko (Watanabe), he sends a group of his most brutal men to torture and kill her. When she manages to get the upper hand and survives, she finds herself trapped in the apartment awaiting the next attempt on her life.
It’s a brave move to set a movie in an apartment which is basically one room, and not allow the main actor to leave it. There are a few cheats to make the world of Everly feel that bit more bigger, though claustrophobic but for the most part, this is about a strategic war in an apartment. While the action is thick and fast though, Everly is also about being a mother,...

Director: Joe Lynch; Screenwriter: Yale Hannon; Starring: Salma Hayek, Hiroyuki Watanabe, Laura Cepeda, Togo Igawa; Running time: 92 mins; Certificate: 18
Maybe it was because Salma Hayek made a compelling badass in Oliver Stone's Savages that she signed up for the bullet-riddled, entirely brain-free splatter-fest that is Everly. But she doesn't get to wear a suit here and strut with intent. Instead, director Joe Lynch strips her from scene one, makes her crawl on the floor, ties her up, cages her and generally makes her the subject of every sordid violent fantasy he can think of. And, for what? Even slobbering Salma fans might come away feeling frustrated at the lack of an x-rated payoff.
Quentin Tarantino is the obvious standard-bearer for Lynch, who has previously directed B-movie shorts and one feature dubiously titled Knights of Badassdom (straight-to-video), but whereas Qt lavishes as much attention on characterisation as bloodletting, Lynch doesn't see the need.

After one bullet-riddled trailer for director Joe Lynch’s Everly, here comes the second one, which pretty much covers the same beats and blasts. Salma Hayek stars as the title character, who has betrayed a mob boss. So he decides to have her killed by sending several heavily armed killers to her apartment. There’s just one flaw in his plan – she’s far more of a badass than he ever suspected and is ready to fight to stay alive. Even when there are rocket launchers pointed in her direction. What we’re saying is, we hope she has really, really good home insurance.Lynch and writer Yale Hannon had to drag this one through development, and despite some positive reactions at festivals, it faced a pretty poisonous reaction from Us critics earlier this year and has slipped down the release calendar slightly here. You’ll be able to see...

On paper, it seemed like a done deal. Salma Hayek as a voluptuous prostitute fighting for a life against the cronies of her jilted ex-lover, a nefarious pimp who carries a samurai sword and cackles like a Bond villain? Sign me up. But for a fun-sounding exploitation flick – think Kill Bill meets Die Hard with a more bodacious lead – Everly is an astonishingly punishing watch, dragging Hayek through all kinds of uncomfortable tortures without offering much of anything else to pick up the narrative slack, be it humor, thrills or any semblance of depth.
As such, what’s left over is difficult to regard as anything other than a failure on the part of writer/director Joe Lynch and co-writer Yale Hannon, neither of whom are able to provide the adrenaline kick that a low-budget, pedal-to-the-metal action flick like Everly so intrinsically required. Without it, Hayek’s resilient sex slave...

Do you have nightmares about Bill Lumbergh telling you to put new cover sheets on your Tps reports? For some, the corporate cubicle setting is as horrifying as the creepy boiler rooms that Freddy Krueger haunts in the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Script excerpts and storyboards for an imagined tenth film in the Elm Street franchise show Freddy tormenting a coma patient by placing him in a mind-numbing office environment where meaningless meetings, tear-inducing small talk, and countless hours of hellish tasks reign supreme, with no escape in sight. Also included in our latest round-up are Blu-ray / DVD release details and cover art for the Salma Hayek-starring Everly and information on the 20 recently announced Star Wars books that will take place in the time period between Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

Joe Lynch has directed a number of films over the past eight years, including Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, Knights of Badassdom, and the “Zom-b-Movie” segment of 2011’s Chillerama anthology, but I’ve never felt like we’ve seen a film that was truly 100% his voice. That all changes, though, with Everly, his gut-punch love letter to the modern action film, a raucous and wickedly fun time that manages to be way more heartfelt and emotionally-charged than its over-the-top brutality and balls-out gunplay might otherwise suggest. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a truly badass female hero get her cinematic due, but everything about Lynch’s latest gets it just right.
In Everly, we meet the titular prostitute (Salma Hayek) on Christmas Eve right after she’s been subjected to a brutal gang-rape orchestrated by a Yakuza mob boss who isn’t thrilled with her recent betrayal of him and his organization.

Since Liam Neeson didn't really do much in the vein of quality ass-kicking earlier this month, maybe Salma Hayek has what it takes to step up to the plate with the action thriller Everly. In the film, Hayek plays a woman who faces down assassins sent by her ex, who also just happens to be a mob boss, while holed up in her apartment. In this first Us trailer, it feels like The Raid meets Kill Bill, with plenty of action to go around. Frankly, I'm just excited to see an actress like Hayek in this role instead of a leading man. This could open up some new doors for the actress if it turns out to be a hit, which we hope it will be. Watch! At one point in time, director Joe Lynch was targeting Kate Hudson as the star of his new action thriller, Everly, planning to reposition her as a gun-toting assassin. That clearly never came to pass, and we have to admit that Salma Hayek looks a little more natural flinging bullets and trading one-liners with the bad guys in this trailer, available over at Apple's site.Lynch and writer Yale Hannon have been developing this one for a while now, looking to make a film about a woman who betrays her ex. And, because he’s a mob boss, this is going to be one messy break-up, especially since he’s decided she has to die.Not one to simply let a group of hired guns storm into her apartment with putting up a fight, Everly breaks into her stash of weapons to return fire. Salma Hayek says “Yippee-ki-yay” to Japanese mobsters and hired killers in the international trailer for Everly, director Joe Lynch’s ode to Asian cinema and the action classic Die Hard. The Oscar nominee stars as a Yakuza prostitute-turned-informant who must find her inner John McClane and fend off assassins before she can whisk her young daughter away to a new life. Liam Neeson rebranded himself as an action hero with Taken and Scarlett Johansson did it this summer with Lucy. After recent turns in Here Comes The Boom and Grown Ups 2, can Everly do the same for Hayek?
Akie Kotabe and Hiroyuki Watanabe also star in Lynch’s follow-up to Knights Of Badassdom and Yale Hannon scripted the bloody shoot ‘em up, which features a score by The Walking Dead and Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary. "I know I'm gonna die tonight." If Liam Neeson can revamp his career as an aging action star, then why can't Salma Hayek do the same? Of course, the actress is only 48 years old, which makes her 14 years younger than Neeson, but you don't normally see actresses going all out like this at her age. But that's what makes this first international trailer for Everly from director Joe Lynch so damn cool. Well, there's also some killer action sequences all set within the confines of a single apartment, so that's a big selling point. At the very least, this looks purely entertaining, like Kill Bill meets The Raid, so count me in. Watch below! Austin - "Everly" puts me in an uncomfortable position. Sure, nowhere near as uncomfortable as the circumstances faced by Everly (Salma Hayek) over the course of the film, a one-room action movie, but as a film critic, I find myself really wrestling with my reaction. On the one hand, I like the energy of the film, and I think Hayek is about as appealing a lead as she's been in a while as the film opens in media hell, with her as a sex slave who finds herself at a turning point, freedom in her sights, but with a whole wall of mayhem between her and escape. The film makes a lot out of its single location, and I'm a fan of films where you watch one space get more and more destroyed over the course of an evening. Director Joe Lynch directs the film like a hungry man chasing a ham sandwich,...

Who on earth would set a high-octane, high-body count, bulletfest of an action movie in a single room? The answer is director Joe Lynch. The filmmaker’s new film, Everly, stars Salma Hayek as a prostitute who must kill a small army of assassins sent to murder her at an apartment by a yakuza crime boss. At Christmas.
The director explains that his intent with the film was to combine two cinematic flavors few people might have considered placing together: Action classic Die Hard and the work of the avant-garde Dogme 95 filmmaking collective, whose leading lights include one Lars von Trier.

It's been awhile since last we heard anything regarding the Joe Lynch project Everly, but some pretty major casting news broke this morning and we have one question... how much bloodshed is Joe planning on splattering Hayek with? Please, lord, say a lot!
Deadline reports that Salma Hayek has signed to star in Everly, replacing the previously announced Kate Hudson. Lynch will direct from a Black List script by Yale Hannon. The movie will be shot in Belgrade, Serbia, this summer.
In the movie Hayek will star as a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, who must fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss. It is set entirely in one room and based on a concept created by Lynch with the script penned by Yale Hannon. Claustrophobic much? Look for more details on Everly soon enough as we'll be keeping a close eye on its progress,...

With a killer leading lady and a looney director, how could anyone possibly resist the allure of Everly? We know one thing for sure... internationally they can't!

The film, which is produced by Adam Ripp and Rob Paris' Crime Scene Pictures, also sold to Splendid for Germany, Switzerland, and Benelux for just north of $1 million.
Nick Meyer's Sierra/Affinity has been shopping the $10 million actioner, helmed by Joe Lynch, to buyers at the fest, which sees Hudson star as a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, fending off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss.

To say that Kate Hudson hasn’t lived up to her fullest potential in the past decade is a bit of an understatement; while she was great as the heartbreaking band aide Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s classic “Almost Famous,” she’s been mostly reduced to fare like “My Best Friend’s Girl,” "The Skeleton Key,” and “How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days” over the past few years. We’ll try to remember her more recent work in “The Killer Inside Me” over the abysmal trailer for “A Little Bit of Heaven,” but all that may not matter now as it looks as if Hudson is about to dramatically revamp her blonde bombshell image. Hudson is now set to star in director Joe Lynch’s “Everly,” from a List-approved script based on an idea by Lynch and penned by Yale Hannon. Hudson will play a woman trapped in her apartment,...

[1] Could romcom queen Kate Hudson be branching out at last? Earlier this week, she signed on for her first animated feature in DreamWorks' Me & My Shadow, and she's now gunning for action stardom with Everly. Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdom) will direct from a 2010 Black List script by Yale Hannon. Hudson will play a woman trapped in her apartment as she fends off attacks from assassins hired by her ex, a ruthless mob boss. Hudson is best known for her romantic comedy roles, like last year's Little Bit of Heaven and Something Borrowed, but her upcoming slate shows a little more variety. In addition to Me & My Shadow and Everly, she also has Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist due out next year. After the jump, Piper Perabo fights a bear and Common does magic. David Hackl's testosterone-heavy man vs. bear movie Red Machine has just cast its first female lead in Piper Perabo.

I won’t say that Kate Hudson is making a comeback — I’ve been burned on those grounds a couple of times before — but, between yesterday’s news and today’s update, things are actually looking up for the actress — and we don’t get to say that all too often. Anyway, Variety reports that she’ll be starring for Knights of Badassdom director Joe Lynch in Everly, which comes from a Black List script by Yale Hannon.
An actioner, Everly follows “a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, who must fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss.” So, like an opposite approach to The Raid? I kind of like that idea, actually. The original description, while sharing the same basic skeleton, went like this: “The story of one woman’s struggle for redemption as she fights to stay alive andunite with her mother and young daughter,...

When you think of female action stars, chances are your mind flits to, say, Angelina Jolie, or Kate Beckinsale or even, more recently, Haywire's Gina Carano. We doubt it heads straight to Kate Hudson. But the actress, better known for her rom-coms, is looking to change all that with Everly.Director Joe Lynch crafted the idea for the thriller before handing the concept over to Yale Hannon to crank out the script, which ended up on the Black List. Everly sees a down-on-her-luck woman (Hudson) fighting off assassins hired by her ex, who happens to be a nasty mob boss. So it's basically a wacky rom-com, but with lots more punching. All right, all right... It's a thriller. The tweak this time is that the story is set entirely in one room, which makes us hope Lynch has lots of good ideas to make it work visually. Producers Adam Ripp...

I haven’t seen director Joe Lynch’s “Wrong Turn 2: Dead End” from 2007, but I’m very intrigued by his fantasy role-playing comedy “Knights of Badassdom” (starring Summer Glau, no less) coming out soon. So while we wait for “Badassdom” to find a release date, Lynch has already set up his next film, an actioner called “Everly” with the boys at Crime Scene Pictures, who are also producing the Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz remake of “Gambit” with the Brothers Coens. “Everly” will focus on “a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, who must fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss.” Wow, that’s gotta suck. The film’s concept was conceived by Lynch himself, and the whole film will apparently be shot entirely in one room, the woman’s apartment. Lynch will direct from a script by Yale Hannon, and the boys...
