Kevin Whyte.
Kevin Whyte’s Token Group is weathering the pandemic thanks to its diversified businesses which encompass talent management, live touring, TV production and distribution.
“It will be a brutal two years but we will come through this; we have reserves to fall back on,” said Whyte, who founded the group nearly 30 years ago.
“I’m worried about where the young, entrepreneurial businesses will be coming out of this,” he told Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner in a webinar today. “They’re the ones that we will all have to look out for.”
During the pandemic the group’s Guesswork Television kept shooting The Weekly with Charlie Pickering for the ABC, which enabled the producers to experiment with new ideas.
Whyte tells If he is figuring out the logistics of when and how to film the next series of the ABC’s Hard Quiz in Melbourne later this year.

Rick Kalowski.
ABC head of comedy Rick Kalowski has a ready answer when producers complain they can’t get a show funded because they have been unable to land an international financier or co-producer.
“If you can’t co-finance your scripted show internationally it’s not because it’s too local, it’s because it’s not good enough,” he tells If.
“There is so much hunger out there for scripted content that if you can’t finance it, it’s not a conspiracy. Many good Australian producers have had a lot of success selling their shows internationally.”
Most ABC scripted comedies are now co-financed internationally by streaming platforms or cable broadcasters such as Sky TV. “One of the few good things about the budget cuts in the past few years is that they have forced us to think internationally about our financing,” he says.

In an infamous 2007 Vanity Fair article, Christopher Hitchens claimed that women, for the most part, aren’t funny. He argued that men need to make women laugh in order to impress them and women, being inherently attractive to men, don’t have the same impulse. Accordingly, he wrote, they haven’t developed their comedy skills to the same extent, with the exception of women he deemed to be less attractive than the unfunny ones. As evidence of his point, he cited the heavily male-skewed comedy world: there are more male comics, he said, so clearly men are the funnier gender.
While there are many flaws with his argument, his evidence very well may be the biggest one. Aside from the barriers preventing women from achieving in show business which have nothing to do with their abilities, the preponderance of men in comedy has led to many male comic tropes becoming passé.

Premiering on YouTube on February 11th, Aussie online series The Katering Show has garnered worldwide attention, with 1.7 million views in just one week.
In this time, YouTube subscribers have also grown by about 25K, and as well as from Australia, viewers are in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Singapore and Malaysia.
The series stars comedians and Kate McLennan (ABC TV.s It.s a Date, Comedy Up Late; Network Ten.s Offspring, Channel 7.s Winners and Losers) and Kate McCartney (ABC TV.s Problems, Dirty Laundry Live, Adam Hills Tonight, Kath & Kim) as a horrendously smug foodie and a food-intolerant anti-foodie respectively, with McLennan attempting to teach an indifferent McCartney how to cook a new dish each week.

American women aren't the only ones who can pull off a cooking/comedy hybrid on a tight budget. Aussies Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney are the titular Kates in The Katering Show, a new web series on the Lead Balloon TV channel.
On their show, fictional versions of McLennan and McCartney (the similarity of their names to another famous duo is apparently just a coincidence) teach viewers how to cook. The catch is that McCartney has a number of food intolerances, so she makes a stomach-safe version of whatever meal McLennan is cooking up. McLennan has no dietary restrictions, but her over-the-top, cloying personality makes her a high-energy foil to McCartney's mopey sad-sack of a co-host.
The Katering Show recently zoomed up the charts on Reddit, and for good reason. The two Kates have some serious writing chops, and they have put together a hysterical script to go with moments of subtle,...

Multi-platform projects from Ludo Studio and Hoodlum were among nine to receive funding from Screen Australia this week.
Fresh from winning a Digital Emmy® for #7 Days Later, Ludo Studio is producing Doodles, an animated comedy series which takes drawings sourced via social media and turns them into micro-movies with a touch of insanity. Daley Pearson is the director and the producers are Nick Boshier and Charlie Aspinwall. Another digital Emmy winner, Hoodlum (Secrets & Lies, The Stranger Calls) is collaborating with filmmakers Michael Cox and Paul Mayze on Illusion Five Sweeper Squad, a sci-fi comedy series about a dysfunctional team of cleaners tasked with mopping up after the super heroes.
Multiplattform comedy series Four Quarters tells the fictional story of a group of footy fans during the current, real-time Afl season, produced by Wbmc.s Aidan O.Bryan and Janelle Landers.
