In 1931, Universal Studios made a killing with their scary movies Dracula and Frankenstein. Audiences loved the supernatural characters, and to capitalize on the burgeoning movie monster craze, Universal rolled out The Mummy (1932) and, nine years later, The Wolf Man (1941).
The Mummy casts the incomparable Boris Karloff as a 3,000-year-old Egyptian priest who was mummified alive for attempting to bring back the dead. Archaeologists accidently revive the wrinkly man-monster, who wreaks havoc searching for his lost love.
The Wolf Man stars Lon Chaney Jr. as an American who is bitten by a werewolf while visiting his ancestral home in Wales. He transforms into a hairy beast who kills villagers, and only his father (Claude Rains) can stop the mayhem.
Neither the Mummy nor the Wolf Man possess the star power of their more popular monster brethren Drac and Frank, but they’re still creepy enough to spawn chills.

At a Tiff Telefilm Canada panel, four Canadian directors talked about current industry issues including film vs digital.
Jacob Tierney, Jeffrey St. Jules [pictured], Mathieu Denis, and Andrea Dorfman – these four names are just a sampling of the future of Canadian cinema. These up-and-coming directors sat down at the CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto today during a Telefilm Canada panel to express their attitudes towards new technologies and the changing medium of cinema, weighing in on a crucial debate that emerging filmmakers must confront: film or digital?
Moderator Richard Crouse: You’ve all been making films for at least 10 years, and in some cases, a bit longer than that. These 10 years, which have probably been the most tumultuous 10 years in filmmaking in recent memory, there have been changes in technology, how films are financed, and virtually every facet of the business. I wanted to ask each of you, as people...

Tommy Lee Jones is not impressed.
Jones looked decidedly grumpy while "Saturday Night Live" veterans Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig did a bit before presenting the award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
The crowd erupted in laughter as Ferrell and Wiig attempted to describe the films starring each of the five nominees, but it soon became clear neither had watched any. They messed up plots and names, saying "Mariol Streep" must've played a great "Sassy Sheriff" in "Hope Springs."
But when the camera panned onto the "Lincoln" star during the hilarious skit, it was clear Jones wasn't amused.

The second part of the first Reel Ink round-up of recent books on film includes the biography of a sometime Hollywood rebel, the history of a now forgotten British studio, a look at a film that remains one of the most controversial ever made in the UK, and a hugely compelling history of cinema by the great David Thomson.
Time was against me so I haven’t been able to get through all the reading goodness I’ve acquired in the past eight weeks or so, but I’ll catch up in January. Happy New Year!

I’m sure at least some of us take for granted what we have.
The second we hear about an interesting movie, all we have to do is whip out a smart phone and yell at it until it brings us to an IMDb page. In the past decade, our access to films, TV shows and pop culture phenomena has become a need for instantaneous access. Infamous films no longer just exist in the recesses of an older sibling’s mind waiting to scare and delight us. We have full access 24/7. And even then the information comes to us in bite-sized morsels. But some films warrant a bigger discussion. Ken Russell’s The Devils is an obscure and extreme film which has a larger story and history than what was committed to celluloid.

HollywoodNews.com: From the beginning of this interview with Richard Crouse, one can tell that Xavier Samuel is not taking his role as the evil “Riley” in “Eclipse” lightly. His first comment is that “being a part of something of that magnitude, I just think it comes with a level of responsibility. You know, you want to pay tribute to these characters and really do the best job possible. Otherwise I don’t think I could sleep at night.”
So far, Samuel is fine with the level of attention he’s getting as Victoria’s cohort in “Eclipse”. Instead of seeing it as intrusive, he says that it can reveal a lot about who you are and he’s feeling okay about it. He’s just happy to see the support and level of passion from the fans.
