Exclusive: The general wisdom is that the United States mainland was not attacked during World War II.
However, a new documentary launching on Discovery+, from Objective Media Group America, highlights that this isn’t technically true.
The streamer has ordered Great Balloon Bomb Invasion, a history special that will lift the lid on a relatively lesser known attack on U.S. soil by the Japanese.
Between 1944 and 1945, the Japanese launched more than 9,000 bomb-rigged balloons across the Pacific, resulting in six deaths in Oregon.
The ‘Fu-Go’ bombs reached as far east as Indiana and as far south as Texas, but only 300 have ever been found, leaving potentially thousands of bombs scattered across the country. In the doc, for the first time ever, an investigation is launched into the hidden history of this attack, with a high-tech hunt for the unexploded remnants.

Season 3 of “Gold Rush: Dave Turin’s Lost Mine” will be a bit heavy — and we’re not talking about good weight on the digital scale. Midway through production on the upcoming season, which TheWrap has learned will air beginning March 19 on Discovery Channel and Discovery+, gold room operator Jesse Goins died.
The trailer for the Box Creek, Colorado-set season, which we can also exclusively debut, does not shy away from the loss — though it also does not mention Goins by name. It opens on a sad Turin, and then we see a fire engine leading an ambulance either away from or to the mining site.
“Oh my God,” Kc Morgan then says.
“Who is it?” Nathan Clark asks.
“It’s hard when you lose a brother,” Jason Sanchez says in the Season 3 sneak peek. “You’ve got to step up.”
Yeah, there’s still (hard) work to be done.

Friday’s “Bering Sea Gold” may just spell the end for the Myrtle Irene.
In a sneak peek of the episode obtained by TheWrap, onlookers watch in horror as Kerr sends out a desperate call: “Mayday Mayday! Myrtle Irene is in catastrophic dire failure!” We — and Discovery Channel — teased the scary scene back in March.
In the new clip, Emily Riedel, the captain of The Eroica, says an I-told-you-so from shore.
“This is what happens when you don’t respect the Bering Sea,” she says, watching as her competitor’s gold-mining ship, only a few miles from shore, nearly gets swallowed by waves.

“That is not a place I would like to be, out on that barge right now,” she continues. “Everbody knows out here, this is what the Bering Sea is. This is what the Bering Sea does.

Discovery Channel has given the green light to a second season of docuseries Cooper’s Treasure, from Ample Entertainment and Amblin Television, set for premiere this summer.
In Season 2, treasure hunter Darrell Miklos heads to the Bahamas to track down the whereabouts of 11 wreck sites that Nasa astronaut Gordon Cooper had found and catalogued as having tons of silver, gold and other priceless treasures. Cooper created the treasure map in secret over 50 years ago and shared it with his long-time friend Miklos before Cooper’s passing, in hopes his exploration would continue, and ultimately uncover treasures of the old world. Cooper discovered troves of information about what lies on Earth’s sea floors while orbiting the planet in the 1960s.
Last season, Miklos located a shipwreck tied to Christopher Columbus using Cooper’s intel. But within hours of finding the wreckage, a rival treasure hunter made a competing claim and...

Jazz trumpeter with the Chris Barber band whose playing style was described as 'high-spirited, crisp and clear'
The career of the jazz trumpeter Pat Halcox, who has died aged 82, was defined by the exceptional length of his musical partnership with the trombonist Chris Barber. Halcox explained the longevity of this relationship in a 2008 interview: "Chris always cared so much about what he was doing, and that's why I stayed with him. I've seen the world, made good friends with wonderful musicians, played for huge crowds in fabulous places. I have to thank Chris for all that."
Described by the critic Max Jones as having a playing style that was "high-spirited, crisp and clear", Halcox enjoyed a half-century tenure with Barber's band. It embraced periods of extraordinary success during the heady days of the trad-jazz boom; frequent tours with star Us jazzmen; playing visits to Europe, the Us and Australia; film...

With the usual music video outlets like MTV and VH1 seeming to be more interested in reality programming than music, bands are having a tough time finding places to debut their videos, especially those with a horror-tinged edge. Which is why Dread Central is pleased to premiere "Graven Image" from Infernaeon, the theme of which is essentially the Last Super and crucifixion, done with Jesus and his disciples as zombies.
An evil demon has, once again, reared its wicked head from the swamps of Florida to wreak havoc on the metal landscape. The demon’s name is Infernaeon, and this Floridian outfit has returned with the follow-up to 2007’s A Symphony of Suffering, entitled, Genesis to Nemesis, released August 31st on Prosthetic Records. This time around frontman and former Monstrosity member Brian Werner found himself accompanied by two new guitarists, Taylor Nordberg and Steven Harger, new bassist Mike Poggione, as...
