“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 2 will beam down to Paramount+ on June 15. The series is a throwback to the style of the original show in which the crew of the USS Enterprise explores the universe in the decade before the original series takes place. “Strange New Worlds” features a number of characters from Trek lore, including Spoke, Number One, Nyota Uhura, Christopher Pike, and more.

The home where infamous mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was shot and killed 75 years ago has come on the market in Beverly Hills. Listed with Myra Nourmand of Nourmand & Associates, the Spanish Colonial-style mansion on North Linden Drive has an asking price of 16.995 million.
Siegel — the ruthless gangster who socialized with Hollywood stars and also drove the early development of Las Vegas — didn’t own the house. He leased it for his mistress, Virginia Hill, who served as a courier for the mob. On the night of June 20, 1947, Siegel was killed by an assailant who fired at him through the front window of the home with an M1 Carbine, dispatching him with two gunshots to the head. The case was never solved. (A photo in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner collection shows a detective pointing to five bullet holes in the wall the day after the murder.

“Since studios keep making remakes, why don’t they at least remake them better?” Billy Wilder had a right to ask me that question 20 years ago, since the many remakes of his movies never matched the originals.
The Wilder conundrum seems relevant today when the studios and streamers are announcing more and more remakes. Paramount says it’s developing Love Story, Flashdance and The Parallax View, among others. It is not remaking The Godfather, which went into production 50 years ago. But there are two projects in the works about the making of the movie, and there also is Francis Coppola’s refreshed Godfather III, made in 1990 and re-edited by Coppola now out under his preferred title Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.
While I share Wilder’s skepticism about the remake business, a case could be made that the entire gangster genre deserves a revisit.

Joel Schumacher, director of The Lost Boys, St Elmo's Fire, Falling Down and The Phantom Of The Opera, has died at the age of 80, according to his publicist. He had been living with cancer for a year.
The New York City-born costume designer who found his way into directing in 1974 with Virginia Hill was also known for his contributions to Dark Knight law with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, picking up the franchise after Tim Burton left it and approaching it in playful style. He worked with Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman on Flawless and with Susan Sarandon on John Grisham adaptation The Client. He made his final film, Tresspass, in 2011, but had more recently found his way back into television work.

Jennifer Lawrence is no stranger when it comes to portraying nuanced female characters, and now she's gearing up for the role of another complicated woman: Arlyne Brickman, the mob girl turned FBI informant. Her new part is based on the colorful true story of Brickman's life captured in Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Teresa Carpenter's 1992 biography Mob Girl. While the film's release date is under wraps, we know that Lawrence will star as Brickman and produce alongside director Paolo Sorrentino. And we know that it'll be one hell of a story to tell - Brickman has lived a rather lurid and eventful life full of grit and shady dealings.
Arlyne Brickman's Early Life
Brickman spent 40 years hanging around mobsters. Her story started in 1934 when she was born in the Lower East Side of New York to a Jewish racketeer and one-time chorus girl. In her teenage years, she idolized Virginia Hill,...

What does an abundantly talented woman have to do to get an Oscar around here? Annette Bening is 0-4 when it comes to winning an Academy Award in the acting categories. If it were up to her fans, there would a law in place that would put an end to this insanity. She might not always choose well when it comes to picking projects – if you haven’t seen 2000’s “What Planet Are You From?,” consider yourself lucky. Of course, it was probably criminal that her performance in 2016’s “20th Century Women” didn’t make more of an impact.
This week, Bening pops up as part of a large ensemble cast in “Life Itself,” a romantic comedy written and directed by Dan Fogelman (TV’s “This Is Us”). And because it seems every actor these days is obligated to be part of at least one superhero franchise, Warren Beatty’s...
