Following the success of last year’s Dallas Buyers Club, director Jean-Marc Vallée returns with another high profile title and a big Hollywood star that should easily be this week’s Specialty Box Office go-getter, Wild. Starring Reese Witherspoon, who also produces with Bruna Papandrea under their Pacific Standard label, the Fox Searchlight title will open in a comparatively wider release by this weekend (it opened in NY and La Wednesday) than some of its more recent high-profile brethren including last week’s The Imitation Game or last month’s Foxcatcher. Liv Ullmann returns to the director’s chair after a long absence with her take on Strindberg’s Miss Julie with Jessica Chastain, Collin Farrell and Samantha Morton via Wrekin Hill Entertainment. IFC Films and Magnolia Pictures will each open features Comet and Life Partners respectively which have at their center two people in an intense relationship. And two...

There are some people who make art to create something beautiful, and others who do so to effect change, but artist Lily Yeh accomplishes both with her works. Her journey is profiled in the upcoming documentary "The Barefoot Artist," and today we have an exclusive trailer for the film. Co-directed by Glenn Holsten and Daniel Traub, the film tells the story of Yeh, who travels to some of the most troubled areas in the world and uses community based projects to assist in rebuilding these places emotionally and spiritually. The movie also dips into Yeh's personal life, exploring her own fascinating history as a Chinese born, American educated woman, the discoveries she makes about her roots and the reasons she has been dedicated to fostering art in the unlikeliest of places. "The Barefoot Artist" opens in NY on December 5th at the IFC Center, and in La on December 18th at Laemmle NoHo 7 via Paladin.

Title: OC87: The Obsessive Compulsive Major Depression Bipolar Asperger’s Movie Directors: Bud Clayman, Glenn Holsten and Scott Johnston Featuring: Bud Clayman Mental health issues are but one of many elephants in the room when it comes to any serious national political discussion of social services. Severe mental illness is often the ultimate disease of “the other” (schizophrenics who don’t take their medications and the like), additionally marginalized because those with the resources to care for afflicted family members are more likely to be wrapped up in shame and silence than advocacy. But what of dozens of other crippling mental illnesses, and the treatments that exist and could help so many people [ Read More ]...

The tagline for Bud Clayman, Glenn Holsten, and Scott Johnston‘s OC87 sure doesn’t sound like a lot of fun – the film is billed as “the Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger’s Movie,” which might just drive away scads of potential moviegoers. And yet… The film centers on Clayman’s struggle with Ocd and Asperger’s and how it effects his long-held dreams of becoming a filmmaker. Thirty years after being waylaid from his cinematic aspirations, Clayman decides to finally make a movie – and, appropriately enough, that movie is about his battles with his illnesses. Funny how that works out. While OC87′s tagline doesn’t sound particularly feel-good, Clayman’s story is quite inspirational and, thanks to an exclusive clip from the film, it looks like the film’s makers have approached the story with just enough humor and grit to make it appealing to a large audience. After the break...
