PlatinumGames is interested in finally releasing Scalebound, but the decision isn't really up to them.
Developer PlatinumGames says they'd love the chance to work on Scalebound again, but they need Microsoft's permission to do so.
For those who don't remember, PlatinumGames was set to make an Xbox exclusive title known as Scalebound. Not only was it a big deal for Microsoft to secure an exclusive title from a high-profile Japanese developer, but it was a big deal for them to secure such a notable exclusive at all given that the Xbox One had been suffering from a lack of exclusives up until that point.
Unfortunately, things didn't quite work out that way. Scalebound was canceled by Microsoft for debatable reasons that basically seem to do with both sides being relatively unhappy with the progress of the title up until that point. While PlatinumGames says they don't...

PlatinumGames' studio head isn't blown away by what he's seen of the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett.
In a candid interview with Video Game Chronicle, PlatinumGames' studio head Atsushi Inaba suggested that he's disappointed by what he's seen of the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett.
"It’s Ok. And by that I mean, I’m sure that things will move faster, graphics will be better and maybe it will be easier with less wait times… that’s good for the consumer," said Inaba of what he's seen of next-gen consoles. "But it’s more of the same, quite frankly, compared to previous generations. It’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative, if you ask me.”
Inaba elaborates on his feelings by saying that next-gen consoles are using existing technology that you'd find in many modern gaming PCs rather than utilizing custom chips as used to be the case with new consoles.

PlatinumGames' studio head wants fans to go easy on Microsoft over Scalebound's cancellation.
Scalebound developer PlatinumGames asks fans to not blame Microsoft for cancelling the former Xbox One exclusive.
"Watching fans getting angry at Microsoft over the cancellation wasn’t easy for us to watch," says PlatinumGames studio head Atsushi Inaba in an interview with Video Games Chronicle. "Because the reality is, when any game in development can’t get released, it’s because both sides failed."
Inaba doesn't go into detail regarding how both sides failed due partially to the "rules of engagement as a developer," but he does suggest that some of the problems that led to Scalebound's cancellation can be traced back to some of the decisions (and mistakes) that his studio made while working on the project.

PlatinumGames continues to try new things with old creations, whether that’s creating a spiritual successor to “Okami” with the new DeNa mobile game, “World of Demons,” or finding new ways for “Bayonetta” to slice and dice through enemies in her third adventure with “Bayonetta 3” slated to be a Nintendo Switch exclusive. During his talk at Reboot Develop in Croatia earlier this month, studio co-founder and executive director Atsushi Inaba got a roaring ovation when he asked if anyone in the packed room would buy the 2013 Wii U exclusive “The Wonderful 101” if it came to the Nintendo Switch. But the studio behind “Vanquish,” “MadWorld,” “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance,” and “NieR:Automata” also has two entirely new IP in development.

Fighting classic Bayonetta could get a second sequel - potentially with a male protagonist, according to producer Atsushi Inaba...
Bayonetta may not exactly be a household name, but the two games carrying her name have been little short of brilliant. Combo-heavy fighting games in the mould of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and its sequel are marked out by their frenzied action and unpredictable level design, where you can be fighting monsters in a garden one minute and slaying demons on the side of a crumbling clock tower the next.

Vanquish, Platinum Games’ sole third-person shooter, could be headed to Steam in the near future, according to comments made by studio co-founder Atsushi Inaba. In a translated interview with Kotaku (via VG247), Inaba was quizzed over the possibility of seeing the cult favorite action game reach the screens of PC owners, to which he replied playfully: “(Smiling) Hrm. I wonder… If you stop recording, I can talk about that. (laughs).”
The topic arose from a conversation centred around the longevity of the Japanese games industry as more and more emphasis is placed on gaming outside of consoles and whether Platinum are committed to supporting the platform in the future. Inaba responds by championing Platinum’s relationship with Valve and how both he and the rest of the studio are open to releasing software on both Steam and Windows.
We’re good friends with Valve and often go to their studio.

Word comes by way of the studio’s official blog, where Game Director Hideki Kamiya, Jp Kellams and Atsushi Inaba explained the reasoning behind the delay, citing that the fantastical RPG – one that harkens back to the classic genre titles of yesteryear – is growing into one of the biggest titles that the company has ever produced.
Development on the game is going well and we’re really happy with how it’s coming together. Anyone that is familiar with some of Platinum Games’ biggest titles (“Bayonetta,” “MadWorld,” “Vanquish”) knows that one of the things that they do best is putting a whole bunch of stuff on the screen at once. Their latest release for the Wii U, “The Wonderful 101,” will be no different, featuring up to 100 heroes all fighting together at the same time. Since this was their first game on the Wii U, we asked the game’s Director, Hideki Kamiya, whether or not they hit any hurdles working with new hardware, and surprisingly, things went smoothly, with only a slight bump or two when it came to the game’s multiplayer.
From a technological standpoint, Mr. Kamiya noted that the development team seemed to be able to execute with little trouble.

While the bankruptcy auction for Thq‘s intellectual property resulted in the bulk of their more popular franchises finding new owners, there are still plenty of the company’s assets that failed to attract any bids during the process. Thq’s president Jason Rubin has spoken up about the remaining IPs — which includes the Darksiders, the uDraw tablet and games (the final straw that broke the company’s cash flow statement), and the Double Fine-developed Costume Quest, among others — revealing that there will be a second sale for those unsold assets in the near future.
Speaking to Game Informer Rubin said, “There will be a separate process to sell off the back catalog and IP. That process will take place in the coming weeks.” Rubin did not clarify if the upcoming “process” will involve individual deals, another auction, or a some combination of the two.

Darksiders II was in my "get to when things die down" pile, as I truly enjoyed my time with the original. Unfortunately, it seems I have all the time in the world to catch up, as due to Thq selling off its assets and winding down to its final days, the Darksiders IP is without a home. Also without a home is Vigil, the developer of the Darksiders franchise as well as the upcoming project Crawler (and evidently it was shaping up to be something special). While there has been a great deal of fallout from Thq's descent, there seems to be more to Vigil's story than most of the others. For those who haven't been keeping up, here's a bit of a recap on the recent goings on.

In the aftermath of Thq’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, “Darksiders” developer Vigil Games fell through the crack. Not only did the studio not find a buyer during yesterday’s piecemeal auction, no one bid on the company or its games at all, according to investment blogger DDInvesting.
As of right now, Vigil Games (which was owned by Thq) will continue with the Chapter 11 process. There may still be a buyer for the Darksiders license, but the studio is effectively finished.
Vigil’s lead combat designer Ben Cureton took to NeoGAF to mourn the loss, praising the team that had built “Darksiders” and its sequel, “Darksiders 2”: “Am I sad I don’t have a job? One of the strangest developments coming out of the January 22 auction of Thq's assets was learning that Vigil Games hadn't found a home in the buying frenzy among publishers.
Most of us are hoping that Austin-based Vigil Games, developer of "Darksiders," weathers Thq's Chapter 11 filing somehow, still a tweet from Platinum Games' Atsushi Inaba (linked by Kotaku) indicates we could have a serious buyer in the "Bayonetta" studio for the IP.
There's nothing that can really be done for Vigil, at this point, who may or may not have been toiling away on the next "Darksiders" title, but their IP are still up for grabs and in its current position, Thq might let it go for a (relative) song. Still, both games were big--larger on a scale than Platinum's previous projects. If we're playing the what if game,...

Fans of the original game were blown away when Nintendo revealed that Bayonetta 2 would be coming to the Wii U. On the flip side, just as many folks were a little pissed when they found out the game would be a Wii U exclusive, leaving those who supported the original out in the cold. However, it turns there's good reason for the decision.
Platinum Games, the folks behind Bayonetta, have stressed that they do not want to alienate their fans, but while looking for a partner to create the sequel, Nintendo stepped up in big way.

Nintendo's new console won't lack for compelling software when it's released in November, but with the announcement that Platinum Games' hirsute witch heroine is coming to the console, now it's a must-buy.
The trailer above doesn't reveal much of anything (save that Bayonetta has some newly-blue gun boots). However, with the that second, sword-wielding character in the shadows, could we be seeing a new nemesis or perhaps a new playable character for the sequel?
According to a post on Kotaku, Okami producer Atsushi Inaba is handling the same gig here while the producer of the first Bayonetta, Yusuke Hashimoto, will be directing this time out.
A couple of things: I wonder how exclusive this exclusivity is and if we might...

For a long time now I’ve been looking forward to Anarchy Reigns. The beat ‘em up genre was one of my favorites and there’s no one better than Platinum Games to lend their insanely over-the-top style to the game. Unfortunately, unless you live in Japan, you won’t get to find out if they’ve succeeded until next year.
Although the game is scheduled to release early next month in Japan, and was here as well, the game has been delayed until early 2013 according to a tweet from Sega.
To make matters worse, this is apparently the first time that Platinum Games have heard of the delay in the west. Platinum‘s Producer, Atsushi Inaba, tweeted an apology for the fans who were eagerly awaiting the game, confirmed the Japanese release will not be pushed back, and stated the delay is not due to more development time, because...

In a strange twist Sega has delayed Anarchy Reigns until 2013 for western audiences. Sega posted a couple of twitter responses to fans stating that the game had been moved back to 2013: “the release of Anarchy Reigns has been re-evaluated.” “We now expect to launch in Europe and America in Q1 of 2013.” Anarchy Reigns has already been delayed multiple times, this most recent delay didn’t even give a release date when it was delayed, Sega just gave the obligatory date of Tbd.
The reason why this is so strange is, the game is basically done. Platinum Games the developer of the game actually stated they were finished with the game before the last delay. Today when it was announced Anarchy Reigns will be delayed until 2013, it was the first time Platinum Games had heard about the newest delay.
Platinum Games producer Atsushi Inaba made this statement:
“First of all,...

Sega's abrupt punting of the action brawler into Q1 2013 for the U.S. and Europe even has the game's devs scratching their heads.
That's the take from Platinum Games' Executive Director Atsushi Inaba, who took to Twitter yesterday to respond to the surprise move from a couple of weeks back, which saw the studios' fifth collaboration with Sega being released during the same window as the July 5th Japanese release.
Apparently, it's not as a result of the game being unfinished or anything: according to Inaba, the Western releases are finished. "First of all, we are done with all international versions of Anarchy Reigns. The delay is not due to further development on the game," he explained via Twitter posts. In the same series of posts, he says that Plantinum Games' hands are tied with regards to Sega's Q1 2013 release plans, although he does thank fans for their support.

During a meeting with the press in L.A. on Monday, the series director provided some specifics about the Raiden-centric hack and slash, plus the series gets an updated new site.
Andriasang provided details from the Los Angeles conference where Kojima was joined by Platinum Games' Atsushi Inaba for a Q&A about the long-in-development/recently renamed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in the wake of the Vga trailer debut. During the press conference, the duo showed off a 25-minute making-of documentary about the game while fielding the most persistent question: "what kind of game is Rising? While a full transcript isn't available, Kojima confirmed reiterated that this is a character action game (as opposed to series lead Solid Snake's stealth action adventures), and it's actually a spinoff from the main series—a "Raiden Gaiden" if you will—based on the slice and dice mechanic Konami showed off during E3 2010, which...

Yesterday I wrote up the news on "Max Anarchy," the upcoming 2011 release from PlatinumGames that producer Atsushi Inaba described as a "massively multiplayer melee fighting action" game. It turns out that I'm a liar. Sega revealed today that the game will be called "Anarchy Reigns" for its North American and European release, which is still pegged for fall 2011.
The Sega press release reiterates what Inaba said in the interview reported on yesterday. "Anarchy Reigns" turns the traditional brawler-style interactive experience on its head by bringing the action online. There will be different kinds of multiplayer challenges to participate in, including Tag Team battle and Battle Royal, "where players can challenge each other for a full-on fight for victory."
There's no much more than that. Inaba confirmed in yesterday's report that "MadWorld" protagonist Jack will be a playable character in the game, but the press release makes no mention of him...

We all liked "MadWorld" and hopefully most of us liked "Vanquish" too. "Bayonetta" was a little bizarre, but her clothes were actually her own magical hair and her high heels were guns, so that was cool. Now the next game from the ever-inventive Platinum Games has been announced, and it looks like it's all about unleashing a whole lot of chaos online.
"Max Anarchy" is the title, according to an interview with producer Atsushi Inaba in the latest Famitsu (as translated by Andria Sang). The game represents Platinum's first step into the space of online multiplayer gaming. It's true that there are a lot of options out there for people who want to do battle online, but the concept they're working with seems to be a fresh one.
Inaba said that there's really no genre that fits "Max Anarchy," but he describes it as "massively multiplayer melee fighting action." Which,...

Sega has announced that its ultra-violent, stylised brawler MadWorld will be released on March 20, reports McV. In the Platinum Studios title, players take the role of chainsaw-wielding Jack, who must battle his way through a brutal gameshow called Death Watch. The game's producer Atsushi Inaba told the website that few Wii titles have so far been tailored to "adult gamers". "So we thought we'd be able (more)...
