Since their inception, the directing categories at the Tony Awards have mostly been a boys’ club. Not only are the vast majority of winners men, but so are most of the nominees. But the 2024 ceremony could upend these statistics as more women are helming Broadway shows than ever before. This could finally be the year where they make up the majority of directing nominees.
This season there are 13 women directors on Broadway. Four of them will contend for Best Director of a Play: Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate” and “Uncle Vanya”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”), Tina Landau (“Mother Play”), and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”). Another nine women will vie for Best Director of a Musical: Sammi Canold (“How to Dance in Ohio”), Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”), Rebecca Frecknall (“Cabaret”), Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along“), Mari Madrid, Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”), Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”), Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”), and...

The Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee will join the previously announced cast for Jacobs-Jenkins’ Broadway debut, which includes Sarah Paulson, Corey Stoll, Natalie Gold and Alyssa Emily Marvin in the Lila Neugebauer-directed play. Details were not available on Fanning’s role, and additional casting will be announced at a later date.
The story follows the Lafayette family, who has returned to the Arkansas home of their late patriarch’s in the summer to handle his estate. The eldest daughter Toni, portrayed by Paulson, has hopes the family will spend their weekend remembering and reconnecting over their father, while Stoll’s Bo is more focused on recouping the funds he spent on his end of life care.

Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger will star on Broadway this spring in a world premiere production of Paula Vogel’s new Mother Play, to be directed by Tina Landau.
The Second Stage Theater production will begin a limited engagement at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater on Wednesday, April 3, with an official opening on Thursday, April 25.
Mother Play by Pulitzer Prize winner Vogel (How I Learned to Drive) is described by Second Stage as “a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past.”
The synopsis: “It’s 1962, just outside of D.C., and matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage children, Carl and Martha, as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path.

“A Transparent Musical” is heading to New York and Broadway. The show, the first stage play from Amazon Studios, premiered in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum in May — becoming the last show at the Taper for now, as Center Theater Group has canceled all shows at the stage following the close of “A Transparent Musical” on June 25.

Rachel Chavkin has been here before. Under her direction, Hadestown, Anaïs Mitchell’s gorgeous musical that sets the mythical tales of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades and Persephone in – above ground – a stylized New Orleans and – below ground – a coal-mining hellscape – has garnered 14 Tony Award nominations. That’s the most nominations of any production this year, just as the Chavkin-directed Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 fronted the nomination pack (with 12) in 2017.
So yes, the Tony-nominated Chavkin has been here before, but what does it say about Broadway that she is, in a sense, alone in her field: She’s the only woman to direct a Broadway musical this season.
In this candid, wide-ranging conversation, Chavkin spoke to Deadline about Broadway, about what women like herself and Anaïs Mitchell bring to the theater, about Hadestown specifically, and about what she’d like to do next.

Broadway actress and three-time Tony nominee Marin Mazzie died this morning in New York. She was 57.
Her death was announced by her husband, actor Jason Danieley. Mazzie had been fighting ovarian cancer since her diagnosis three years ago.
Lauded for her unforgettable performances in Ragtime, Kiss Me, Kate and, perhaps most of all, Stephen Sondheim’s 1994 musical Passion, Mazzie was mourned today by Broadway. “This is absolutely devastating,” tweeted Patti Murin of Frozen. “What a bright, shining light she was…”
“The lights of Broadway all shine a little dimmer tonight,” wrote Daniel Dae Kim, her co-star in 2016’s The King and I. “My heart goes out to Jason and all who were lucky enough to call her family or friend.”
“Beautiful, brave and inspiring,” wrote Harvey Fierstein. “A glorious voice and an even better human being…”

This might sound familiar to film buffs: A lying and philandering U.S. president suffers a debilitating stroke and is furtively replaced by a body double, who then foils the plot by honoring duty and country. So goes a new musical remake of the 1993 movie “Dave” by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures that is debuting with Broadway aspirations at D.C.’s Arena Stage. New York does seem a plausible goal for this enjoyably light-hearted show, but its creators might first consider reworking an overtly maudlin finale.
There’s much to admire in the homespun fable about integrity and patriotism, wrapped in an inviting package filled with buffoonery and self-deprecating humor. In an even-keeled production from top-tier creators and talent, any resemblance to actual current White House occupants is strictly fortuitous — that is, if you overlook the Twitter-prone president who can’t spell. Call it a timeless show that couldn’t be timelier.

When it comes to award shows, the viewers at home often get the best seats in the house: Their sofas, where presumably no one is as hot or as hungry as the folks in black tie packed into the auditorium. But TV never quite gets the full story — there’s a lot of action offscreen, happening during commercial breaks and at the afterparties. Here are the secrets from the 2018 Tony Awards, inside the room where it happened.
1. He said “F— Trump”
When Robert De Niro introduced Bruce Springsteen’s performance on the Tony telecast, CBS bleeped out a big enough chunk of his speech that cellphones at Radio City Music Hall lit up with texts from friends at home wondering what he said. It was, for the record, “F— Trump. It’s no longer ‘Down with Trump.’ It’s f— Trump.”
2. An emotional pre-show
On TV, the Tony ceremony starts at 8 p.

The 2018 Tony Awards take place on Sunday, June 10 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The three-hour ceremony hosted by two past nominees, composer Sara Bareilles (“Waitress”) and actor Josh Groban, will air on CBS. Those in the Eastern and Central time zones can see it live while those in the Mountain and Pacific time zones have a three-hour tape delay.
Thirty shows were eligible for consideration. A whopping 21 of these reaped at least one bid across the 26 Tony Awards categories. While the nominations were determined by 51 theater professionals, the 2018 Tonys winners will be decided by 842 members of the Broadway community.

At last year’s Tony Awards, the two biggest upsets of the night came in the Best Director categories. On the musical side, Christopher Ashley (“Come From Away”) shocked by besting frontrunners Rachel Chavkin and Michael Greif (“Dear Evan Hansen”), while on the play side Rebecca Taichman (“Indecent”) prevailed over Bartlett Sher (“Oslo”) and Rubin Santiago-Hudson (“Jitney”), the two major contenders for the prize. Ashley and Taichman were ranked fourth and third in Gold Derby’s combined odds, respectively.
This year, we could see a similar upset on the musical front courtesy of Tina Landau, who helmed “SpongeBob SquarePants.” This stage adaptation of the popular cartoon that boasts a whopping 12 Tony nominations. Despite the impressive support “SpongeBob” received from the Tony nominating committee, less than 10% of Gold Derby users currently predicting the Tony Awards think Landau will prevail, with a majority favoring David Cromer for his direction of “The Band’s Visit.

Ethan Slater was a sophomore at Vassar when he took the train from Poughkeepsie for a casting call that would change everything, and he was on the train back when he got the word. “Oh, man, I must’ve left my backpack in the room,” he thought.
Now 26, Slater, in his Broadway debut as the title invertebrate of SpongeBob SquarePants – The Broadway Musical, has been Tony-nominated in the Best Performance By A Leading Actor in a Musical category. He’s been with the show since its first workshops, through a 2016 Chicago premiere and onto the stage of New York’s Palace Theater. He thinks director Tina Landau might have noticed a certain natural optimism in his character, something that all but shouted SpongeBob, but whatever combination of exuberance and talent she saw hasn’t gone unnoticed by critics and audiences.

Winners of the 63rd annual Drama Desk Awards were revealed on June 3 during a ceremony at the Town Hall in midtown Manhattan that was hosted once again by Michael Urie. As with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway production of “The Band’s Visit” was ineligible, save for its sound design which was deemed to be new and won with these voters.

That old Broadway dictum – Never share a stage with fuchsia sea anemones – is blown to smithereens when Gavin Lee taps his way through “I’m Not A Loser,” the gleeful 11 o’clock number of Broadway’s SpongeBob SquarePants musical that all but guaranteed Lee his Tony Award nomination this year for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. An homage to Broadway panache, cartoon anarchy and good old four-legged tap dancing, “I’m Not A Loser” is, night after night, capped by the kind of sustained applause that combines Bravo! with What Was That?
And that’s right, four-legged. Lee, in top hat and tails cleverly outfitted by designer David Zinn with an extra pair of legs and in a just-right shade of (perfectly described) celadon, plays Squidward Q. Tentacles, the grouchy but starry-eyed cephalopod forever carping at the underwater denizens of Bikini Bottom.
