Once again, Survivor fans watched a new advantage come and go. But here is why we might not see the end of the inheritance advantage in season 44.

The first episode showed Matt Blankinship, Sarah Wade, and Lauren Harpe going on the journey. They all had to pick one of three packages to either lose their vote or gain an advantage.
Someone who loses their vote could draw again at the risk of losing their vote for two Tribal Councils. Sarah lost her vote and tried again. That time she got the inheritance advantage. The new advantage allows you to secretly inherit all advantages and idols played at one Tribal Council.
“That’s awesome,” the management consultant said. “I think that’s totally worth losing one vote.”

It was one of the most shocking results in “Survivor” history: Mike Gabler claimed the million dollars and title of Sole Survivor. After dominant players Jesse Lopez and Karla Cruz Godoy fell short, the heart valve specialist from Houston was able to best the likable and challenge dominant Cassidy Clark and Owen Knight with the jury. It has left “Survivor” viewers surprised and, in some cases, outraged. But he did tell us he was “hiding in plain sight.” So stop whining. I think he’s a worthy winner of the game I’ve loved for 43 seasons. And here are five reasons why Mike Gabler deserved to win.
1. He wowed the jury
In a game of increasing twists, advantages and idols, “Survivor” is a complicated game. But for 43 seasons the way to win has remained incredibly simple. You only need to do two things: get to the end and get the most jury votes.

The season finale “Survivor 43” aired on Wednesday night and concluded with host Jeff Probst crowning a new millionaire in Mike Gabler. The 52-year old from Meridan, Idaho defeated Cassidy Clark and Owen Knight after swaying the jury to believe that he was the most deserving of the title of sole survivor. So for the final time this season, we look back at the dumbest, most shocking and most exciting moments of this memorable finale.

On the December 14 season finale of “Survivor 43,” Mike Gabler won the 1 million grand prize by a 7-1-0 vote over Cassidy Clark and Owen Knight. The 52-year-old heart valve specialist from Meridian, Idaho played an under-the-radar game at the merge, particularly after Elisabeth “Elie” Scott called him out at tribal council as someone that should be targeted. Well, they didn’t listen to her, and now Gabler has become a millionaire — at least temporarily.
Gabler announced during the reunion show that he was going to “make history” on “Survivor” by donating his prize money to charity. “There are people that need that money more,” he explained to host Jeff Probst. “I’m going to donate the entire prize, the entire million dollars, in my father’s name Robert Gabler, who’s a Green Beret, to Veterans In Need.” The charity helps veterans who are dealing with psychiatric problems including Ptsd and curbs the suicide epidemic.

After 26 days of swollen ankles, last gasps and shocking betrayals, the winner of “Survivor 43” was crowned during the December 14 season finale on CBS. (Read our minute-by-minute live blog to see how it all went down.). The episode began with just the Top 5 finalists left in the running to win the 1 million prize: Cassidy Clark, Mike Gabler, Jesse Lopez, Karla Cruz Godoy and Owen Knight. But only one of them had what it took to outwit, outplay and outlast the others and join the “Survivor” winners list.
By the end of the second hour, Karla and Jesse had both been eliminated from the game, leaving the Top 3 castaways to face the jury. Host Jeff Probst then read the jury votes aloud in dramatic fashion. Gabler ended up winning the title of Sole Survivor with seven votes, while Cassidy came in second place with one vote and Owen placed third with zero votes.

Following last week’s shocking elimination of Cody Assenmacher from “Survivor 43,” just the Top 5 players remained in the running to win the 1 million grand prize. Of this group, only Jesse Lopez still possessed a hidden immunity idol, which theoretically secured him a place in the Final 4. The other four players — Cassidy Clark, Mike Gabler, Karla Cruz Godoy and Owen Knight — had to rely on immunity challenges and their social games to make it to the end. So which castaway did host Jeff Probst have the pleasure of anointing as the Sole Survivor of Season 43?

All season long, Gold Derby readers have been making their predictions for who they think will take home the 1 million grand prize on “Survivor 43.” With just hours left to go before the season finale airs December 14 on CBS, the overwhelming favorite to win is Jesse Lopez. This 30-year-old survey methodologist from North Carolina was solely responsible for ousting his biggest threat, Cody Assenmacher, during the penultimate episode. Jesse also holds a secret immunity idol that should theoretically bring him to the Final 4, at which case he’d truly be vulnerable for the first time ever.
Here are Gold Derby’s current “Survivor 43” winner predictions for the Top 5:
1. Jesse Lopez — 23/50 odds
2. Karla Cruz Godoy — 8/1 odds
3. Cassidy Clark — 10/1 odds
4. Owen Knight — 12/1 odds
5. Mike Gabler — 28/1 odds

If you’re taking bets on which of the final five on “Survivor 43” is going to make it to the three chairs at the final tribal council, your safest bet is Owen Knight. And yet if you’re betting on who is the most likely to actually win, put him at the bottom of your list. Left out from the majority in many post-merge votes and without much agency to make decisions, Owen has been the string-along goat of the season. Still, we think he’s locked and loaded to make it to the end. Below, we take a look at why he we don’t think he’ll win in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.
As it stands in the final five, Owen is strongly aligned to Mike Gabler and loosely aligned to Jesse Lopez. Gabler is a safe bet for Owen to go to the end with, but after...

With two immunity and one fire-making challenge left to play out in the “Survivor 43” finale, wins are going to be a huge factor in determining who takes home the million dollar prize. Having already proven herself as a threat in both physical and mental challenges and coming off the heels of an important immunity win at final six, Cassidy Clark is poised to mount a late-game challenge streak that could turn the heads of the jury. She is the best dark horse candidate to win. Below, we take a look at how she could pull it off in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.
Cassidy’s journey to the final five has been one of the quieter ones. Her early game was defined mostly by her antagonizing of tribe mate Ryan Medrano and the vengeance she sought against him for voting for her week five. When the merge hit, Cassidy fell into...

Up until a few weeks ago, Karla Cruz Godoy was one of the most powerful players in “Survivor 43,” but poor decisions and ill-conceived lies have left her at the back of the pack heading in to Wednesday’s finale. Tricked into playing her immunity idol a week too early and deceived by her now former allies, Karla goes into the final five without protection and seen as the least trustworthy player left. In order to make it to the final tribal council she’ll need to repair the damage. Below, we take a look at where she might find support in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.

Call us crazy, but we actually see a path for Mike Gabler to win “Survivor 43.” From starting the season getting on everyone’s nerves to now flying under the radar by “hiding in plain sight,” Gabler has mounted one of the most unlikely runs to finale night in recent memory. But all along he’s been quietly planting the seeds to instigate other players to make the loud moves that have kept him safe. Below, we take a look at how telling this story could earn him the win in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.
Having fallen off the radar (intentionally!) since his original tribe nemesis Jeanine Zheng became the first member of the jury, Gabler has good odds of being one of the three players to argue their case at the final tribal council. Going into the final five, both Karla Cruz Godoy and Cassidy Clark were the names being...

Let’s not beat around the bush — when Jesse Lopez pulled off the blindside of the season against his number one ally Cody Assenmacher in the penultimate episode of “Survivor 43,” he not only became the clear front-runner to win, but also a likable villain on par with masterminds Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine. Like them, can he also come out on top and win the million dollar prize despite backstabbing jurors? We think so. Below, we take a look at how he’s going to get there in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.
Jesse worked closely with Cody since the beginning of the game, systematically playing the fence between competing forces where together they had ties on both sides. At the start of the merge, they decided to equalize Noelle Lambert‘s growing power in the game by taking out her closest ally at the time, Dwight Moore — both Noelle and...

Top 5 moments of ‘Survivor 43’ episode 12: Tasty rewards, hidden idols at play and another blindside
The 12th episode of “Survivor 43” aired on Wednesday night and concluded with host Jeff Probst snuffing out the torch of Cody Assenmacher. The 35-year old from Honolulu, Hawaii was sent packing and became the sixth member of the jury. Did the tribe make the right decision by voting Cody out? And what were the dumbest, most shocking and most exciting moments of the last episode?
See Cody Assenmacher (‘Survivor 43’ exit interview): ‘My heart is crushed, it is freaking crushed’
Top Moments of Episode 12:
1. Post Tribal Shenanigans: The name of Sami Layadi was still on the lips of the remaining contestants but Owen Knight was very much aware that a bigger move was needed to separate the power duo that is Karla Cruz Godoy and Cassidy Clark. An astute Karla, when confronted by Cassidy, turned on the emotions. Jesse Lopez seemed quite unbothered by all of this and told Cassidy the truth.

On Wednesday’s 12th episode of “Survivor 43” we were treated to a glorious blindside that brought the strategy of storing hidden idols to a crashing halt. Not only was Cody Assenmacher‘s idol flushed out of the game, but it was used against him in a brilliant plan by his most trusted ally to take him out despite his own “95” certainty that he was safe. Read on for Cody’s “Survivor 43” exit interview from the end of the episode.
Orchestrated by Jesse Lopez, who Cody has been working very closely with for weeks as the powerful fence-straddlers between two sides of the game, the plan was to seize an opportunity to flush Cody’s idol, leaving him vulnerable to the vote, while also spooking Karla Cruz Godoy into using her own as well. With only two weeks and six players left in “Survivor 43,” it’s time we dole out our final power rankings of the season. Left in the game are Karla Cruz Godoy and Cassidy Clark from original Coco, Jesse Lopez and Cody Assenmacher from original Vesi, and Owen Knight and Mike Gabler from original Baka. One of these six will be named “sole Survivor” on the season finale airing Wednesday, December 14.

In this week’s “Survivor 43” deleted scene (watch above), Owen Knight and Karla Cruz Godoy are chatting together on the beach during the 11th episode shortly after Noelle Lambert‘s blindside. “It’s hard to take anything personally at this point,” admits the 30-year-old college admissions director from New Orleans. “Earlier I was feeling pretty down in the dumps [before the Jeanine Zheng vote]. It’s exciting now. This is where it gets fun.”
Owen was feeling “pretty sorry” for himself yet again when Noelle was ousted from the game, but he heeded Karla’s advice and slept on it, and now he’s back to his old self. At the impending immunity challenge in which the players each had to hold their breaths under a steel grate in the ocean, he gave it his all and ended up outlasting the tide. Both Owen and Karla claimed immunity necklaces, a historic first for the classic challenge.

Wednesday’s 11th episode of “Survivor 43” marked a turning point in the game of Sami Layadi, one of the youngest players (at 19 years old) to ever seriously contend for the win. Read on for his “Survivor 43” exit interview from the end of the episode.

Wednesday’s 10th episode of “Survivor 43” featured one of the most epic displays of determination when Noelle Lambert overcame a huge deficit to win the reward challenge. After the valiant feat, Noelle’s comrades in the game took advantage of a window of opportunity to blindside her at the next tribal council, sending her to jury as the fourth member. Read on for her “Survivor 43” exit interview from the end of the episode.
After two unanimous votes last week, Noelle’s elimination was a return to form for a group of players that have been maneuvering through votes with only slim majorities. Noelle was voted out 5-2-1 with a meaningful tip of scales against her from original tribe mates Jesse Lopez and Cody Assenmacher. The result for Noelle was a blindside that she attributes to them having “smelled it coming.” She says, “I came into this game wanting to...

If it’s true that liars end up with pants on fire, Cassidy Clark is going to need some new britches. In CBS’s latest “Survivor 43” secret scene (watch above), the 26-year-old designer from Texas lies right to Ryan Medrano‘s face about who voted him during the tribal council when Jeanine Zheng ultimately went home. Ryan received two votes that night: one from Jeanine and one from Cassidy. But the 25-year-old warehouse associate from Texas had no idea who was responsible for that second vote.
“Guys, I thought I was going to get voted out and didn’t have my giant shells. I was going to be upset,” Ryan tells the group on Night 16 after they all return to camp. In a private confessional, he reveals, “So tribal was supposed to be an easy vote. Everybody was in unison with [voting out] Jeanine. But somebody other than Jeanine put my name down at tribal.

Wednesday’s ninth episode of “Survivor 43,” Jeff Probst surprised the top 10 with two immunity idol necklaces and two tribal councils. The players returned the favor by surprising us with two blindsides. In the first of the night’s two eliminations, James Jones was hoodwinked by Karla Cruz Godoy, Owen Knight, Noelle Lambert and Sami Layadi. Read his “Survivor 43” exit interview below.
In a long history of blindsides, the move against James will go down as one of the best planned and most satisfying for those that made it. The set up was perfected once James and Owen, his growing arch nemesis in the game, were sorted into the same group to attend a split tribal council together. In the prior week, James had lied to Owen about the group voting out Ryan Medrano, leaving him as the odd man out in what ended up being a vote against his ally Jeanine Zheng.

‘Survivor 43’ deleted scene: Ryan reveals why he chose to fish instead of scramble for votes [Watch]
Viewers of “Survivor 43” Episode 8 saw Ryan Medrano spending his time prior to tribal council fishing instead of scrambling for votes. As it turns out, he was completely unaware of the fact that he was *thisclose* to being voted out on Wednesday night. We now know a bit more about why the 25-year-old warehouse associate from El Paso, Texas chose to fish so much, as revealed in CBS’s “Survivor 43” deleted scene (watch above). And it’s all thanks to his late grandfather.
“I thought fish would be nice,” Ryan explains to the camera. “My muscles — I feel them fatiguing over the things we’ve eaten. We need protein, and fish is something that gets people excited.” After spending hours in the ocean, he was able to bring back 21 fish for his fellow tribe members to devour.

After 16 long days struggling to survive in the islands of Fiji, the castaways are starting to have dreams about, you guessed it, food. In CBS’s latest “Survivor 43” sneak peek video (watch above), Karla Cruz Godoy tells her tribe mates about a “wild” food dream that involves the show’s host, Jeff Probst. “This is gonna sound so stupid,” Karla declares with a smile. “My dreams are wild here.”
The 28-year-old educational project manager from San Diego then entertains her fellow competitors with the play-by-play of her dream. “Probst was there,” she begins. “It was like an eating competition, but it was a lot of chicken. But then Probst was like, ‘I’m hungry,’ and I was like, ‘Here, you can have some of mine.’ Then he decides to make ramen and that’s his lunch. And he proceeds to get in the middle of all of us, kind of like crowd surf.

Following the trajectory of seasons 41 and 42, “Survivor 43” enters the home stretch of the game this Wednesday when the final 11 players will begin voting each other out and onto the jury. Only three players will sit in the final seats at the last tribal council, meaning eight others will take their place on the jury that decides the winner. This stage of the game is defined by individual immunity, trust in what alliance you’ve built, who plays what advantage when, and padding your résumé with jury-impressing moves.

We’re two episodes into the individual portion of the game on “Survivor 43” and, with the jury starting to take form with the next elimination, the frontrunners to win must start padding their résumé with big moves. Watch the full deleted scene of her “master plan” above.
In the current format of “Survivor,” there are a ton of advantages and idols floating around the game that put players in positions of power. The game-changing tools like Steal-a-Vote, Knowledge Is Power and immunity idols undoubtedly make players a target for elimination, but it takes knowing who has them in order to strike at the right person. Karla is one of the few this season that has managed to keep her advantage a secret from everyone else.

When the three tribes came together as one on on the sixth episode of “Survivor 43,” confusion was in the air as no one was quite sure whether they had officially “merged.” In a new CBS deleted scene (watch above), Noelle Lambert lets it be known that she feels “lucky to be here,” no doubt referencing the fact that her name was written down at the last tribal council she attended.
“Day 13, halfway to go, and we still have no idea what’s coming next,” states the 26-year-old U.S. Paralympian from Manchester, N.H. At this stage in the game, all 13 remaining castaways were living on the same beach, but they hadn’t yet competed in the challenge that would determine who made the merge and who would go to purgatory, aka “mergatory.”

After the shocking blindside of Geo Bustamante on the fifth episode of “Survivor 43,” viewers were blindsided themselves when the “Next time on Survivor” promo showed all three tribes coming together on the same beach and what looked like an upcoming challenge for a potential “merge.” It’s an odd and early turn of events since only five contestants have been eliminated, but fans can remember from watching the last two seasons that making the merge will not come easy to the players as they will likely have to earn their way to it by surviving at least a vote. With Season 43 no longer having the controversial hourglass twist and promising another game-changing twist to making the merge, it will be interesting to see what events will occur in the sixth episode. But now that the players have all come together, let’s break down the three tribes and the odds...

Geo Bustamante couldn’t have been more excited to have secured himself the Knowledge Is Power advantage on “Survivor 43,” despite what he already (sorta) knew to be true: it’s a curse! Upon getting the advantage in Episode 5 he said, “This is what I came here for! I came to ‘Survivor’ to get an idol or to get an advantage. I’ve never seen anybody use the Knowledge Is Power successfully, but it’s a very powerful tool.” He went on to say he’d save it because he was certain he wouldn’t be voted out that night. Less than 15 minutes later, Geo was the fifth person voted out of the game.
With Geo’s finding of the advantage and subsequent elimination, he became the third of three players to hold the Knowledge Is Power advantage and not use it successfully. For Geo, finding the advantage wasn’t the curse,...

It’s “Drop your buffs” time on “Survivor 43,” aka the merge, and in CBS’s newly released sneak peek video (watch above), the Coco tribe reacts to the news after reading it via tree-mail. While the entire tribe celebrates what the future may hold, Karla Cruz Godoy remains (smartly) skeptical. She tells the camera, “While it’s exciting, yes, oh my god, the merge is coming … it’s ‘Survivor,’ right? And for the last two seasons we’ve seen that the merge doesn’t come easy.”
What she’s referring to is that during “Survivor 41” and “Survivor 42,” the castaways had to earn their way into the merge for the first time ever. The fifth episode of “Survivor 43” was so jam-packed that there wasn’t enough time for CBS to show everything that happened on television. Luckily, the network has released two deleted scenes this week that viewers will undoubtedly enjoy. In one video (watch above), Cassidy Clark takes a moment to “stay calm” as she meditates on the Coco beach. In another video (click here to watch in a second article), Dwight Moore discusses how his Vesi tribe is “on a roll” and he predicts a “winning streak” in challenges going forward.
At the Coco camp, Cassidy’s name has been on the chopping block twice in a row now, but her strong alliance with Karla Cruz Godoy and James Jones has given them the numbers. So far they’ve voted out Lindsay Carmine and Geo Bustamante, both of whom were blindsided. The remaining player now on the outs is Ryan Medrano.

Confident in his position on the Coco tribe, Geo Bustamante was not expecting to be blindsided when his tribe returned to “Survivor” tribal council for the second week in a row. The 36-year-old from Hawaii became the fifth elimination of the season, ending a record-tying four female elimination streak and preventing Geo from making next week’s merge. Read his “Survivor 43” exit interview below.
After the Coco tribe united to vote out Lindsay Carmine last week, both Geo and his main ally Ryan Medrano were feeling well-positioned within their tribe. Neither of the guys knew that their cockiness had started to rub their tribe the wrong way many days prior and that the others were actually united against them. Cassidy Clark suspected Geo and Ryan would be targeting her this week based on the fact that Geo voted for her last week as the safety option in case of a surprise tie.
