“The Crown” is back in the Emmy race again with its fifth season and the final completion of its ensemble rotation cast. The last time it was eligible in 2021, the historical drama about Queen Elizabeth II swept all the main categories at the Emmys and won 11 awards overall including Best Drama Series. This year, it received six nominations as part of Netflix’s haul of 103, the most of any streaming service and second of all networks. While this is the show’s first entry in the single digits, it still maintained its Best Drama Series bid and received crucial mentions in many of its technical categories. Read on for a closer look at “The Crown’s” six nominations.
In the top program race, “The Crown” is the only series from Netflix in contention, competing against four dramas from HBO: “House of the Dragon,” “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “Succession,...

Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. As it goes against “Succession” in this race, it will also have to fend off two-time winner “The Crown,...

When Elizabeth Debicki auditioned for a minor role in The Crown, the thought that she might one day play Lady Diana Spencer didn’t even cross her mind until the show’s casting director planted the seed. Now, marking her second season in the Diana-verse, she’s paired her talent and passion for research to embody the troubled royal. Following Emma Corrin’s Emmy-nominated turn as Princess Diana earlier in the show, Debicki’s version of the people’s princess starts out much less hopeful—after an upsetting second honeymoon, it becomes impossible for Diana to ignore that her marriage to Prince Charles is failing.

This is the third installment of a five-part series examining the transformation of television as the industry prepares to celebrate the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 19.
The pandemic has transformed the casting process – for now, at least – with Zoom actor tryouts largely replacing in-person sessions and self-taped auditions supplementing those as many of us hunkered down at home.
It’s not yet clear whether these virtual auditions are here to stay or will fade away once the global health crisis finally does. Casting pros and talent agents say there are clear benefits to virtual sessions conducted over video-conferencing platforms like Zoom but lament the lack of intimacy compared to in-person auditions.
In the short-term, however, many see these virtual auditions as having a big silver lining for Hollywood. When the pandemic shut down much of the industry in March 2020, Zoom enabled casting pros to broaden their reach further. Working-from-home, and...

There are shows that cast with a healthy sense of acting rotation in mind, and then there is “The Crown.” In other words, people have been conditioned to not get too attached to certain performers, but to absolutely retain that affection for the characters.
The world-renowned Netflix drama about the royal family through decades of societal change and internal conflict recasts its principal roles every two seasons, and while some shows could easily lose momentum employing such a process, “The Crown” has done quite the opposite.

Jane Featherstone, exec producer of HBO’s Chernobyl, has lifted the lid on producing the “vast” and “compelling” period drama and how the series fits into her rapidly growing Sister Pictures.
The Broadchurch and Humans producer had only just recently set up her own indie when she received a call from Kary Antholis, who was HBO miniseries chief at the time, asking her to check out an outline from The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s Craig Mazin.
“I took a look at the pitch and I thought it was one of the most fascinating, compelling and brilliant outlines I had ever read and I called Kary back within 24 hours and said ‘yes please, I love this.’ I then flew out to meet Craig and Carolyn [Strauss] and we became a triumvirate of passion and hope [for the show],” she told Deadline.

The most fascinating aspect of the “Game of Thrones” presence at this year’s Emmys is the fact that the show took a year off. The first six seasons were an annual presence at “TV’s biggest night,” becoming relatively predictable for their ability to dominate, especially in the below-the-line categories. But the HBO fantasy drama was absent from the 2017 awards after premiering too late in the year to qualify, allowing a whole new crop of dramas to vie for glory.
That delay meant that one of TV’s winning-est series is eligible again this year, and anyone who might have thought a summer premiere would lead to a decrease in nominations was very much mistaken; the veteran series received 22 nominations for its seventh season, the most of any show. However, many of those upstart new dramas are still in the race, making this year’s competition a fascinating one.
