Peter Ramsey, Caleeb Pinkett Producing Live-Action Feature Adaptation Of Comic Book ‘The Storm Clan’
Exclusive: Academy Award winner Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and former Overbook head Caleeb Pinkett (Cobra Kai) are set to produce a live-action feature adaptation of The Storm Clan, the comic book created by Dallas Jackson and Joe Casey, which marks the first title from Jackson’s new company DJ Classicz Comix.
Jackson and Casey will pen the script, with former Lionsgate exec Jorge Alfaro to serve as an EP.
A sci-fi action adventure story, The Storm Clan watches as an ex-military weapons engineer trains his five adopted children to be undercover hi-tech/martial-arts thieves wearing an invincible bionic-body armor. Previously orphaned, the teenagers gifted with bionic technology see it provide them with the opportunity to protect themselves from the threats of the streets, also empowering them to take advantage of life instead of being taken advantage of, and most importantly, giving them comfort and sense of belonging within a family.

Protomartyr are back with a new album called Formal Growth in the Desert. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
In a press release, Protomartyr singer Joe Casey recalled undergoing formal growth of his own — in his hometown of Detroit, though, more than the proper desert. The death of his mother following a 10-year-plus battle with Alzheimer’s combined with a series of break-ins in his family home prompted the artist to finally move out. “The desert is more of a metaphor or symbol,” he explained, “of emotional deserts, or a place or time that seems to lack life.”
Guitarist Greg Ahee co-produced Formal Growth In The Desert alongside Jake Aron. Lead single “Make Way” opens the album with alternating quiet and intensity, with western-sounding guitar and Casey’s low drawl building to commanding chants to, of course, “make way.” The track comes with a music video directed by Trevor Naud,...

Protomartyr has absorbed decades of punk and post-punk history into a gloomy, occasionally playful, and often funny body of work. The J. Robert Oppenheimer-adorned cover of their 2012 debut, No Passion All Technique, signaled the apocalyptic tenor of the Detroit post-punk band’s music as they painted a vivid portrait of their hometown, brought to life by Joe Casey’s sardonic wit and writerly ambition. Protomartyr’s 2020 album Ultimate Success Today expanded the scope of the group’s music by incorporating disparate styles and dynamics, a trajectory that continues on their latest, Formal Growth in the Desert.
After more than a decade, Casey’s haunted croon has traded some of its baritone menace for warm familiarity. “Welcome to the hungry earth,” he semi-deadpans on the album’s opening track, “Make Way.” Guitarist Greg Ahee accompanies Casey with a drunk-tank arpeggio, overlaid with sinuous single-note bends and bright chords. The song’s predictably abstracted,...

Protomartyr are gearing up to release their new album, Formal Growth in the Desert, and as the latest preview, they’ve shared the new single, “Elimination Dances.”
In a statement, vocalist Joe Casey said “Elimination Dances” is named after a chapter from a 1950s teen dance manual and refers to a game where “you get tapped out when you lose the dance,” which felt like a metaphor for surviving everyday life. He added, “You might as well keep dancing until the tap comes.”
On the track, a tense guitar riff builds tension as Casey describes how the dance intertwines with the uncertainty we encounter each day. “Terms of service aren’t so clear,” he yelps. “Pale youth is my replacement/ That’s how elimination dances/ Through this life of mine.”
The accompanying music video features dancer Kota Yamazaki and was directed by Yoonha Park. In a statement, Park explained the...

Writer Joe Casey has built a career in the superhero business, co-creating heroes such as Marvel’s America Chavez and playing in the sandboxes of classic properties Superman and X-Men. After more than 25 years, Casey found himself having questions about his relationship with the genre.
“Did it still speak to me? Did it still hold the same kind of relevance as it did when I was just a fan? Was it just childhood nostalgia that I was having trouble letting go of?” Casey tells The Hollywood Reporter. “How many other readers of my generation were feeling this ambivalence to something that meant so much to us since we were kids?”
Those were the questions swirling when he sat down to write Junior Baker, a five-issue series due out from Image Comics in August. The series centers on Daniel “Dizzy” Baker, a gonzo online journalist who chases superhuman stories in a...

America Chavez
Created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta, America Chavez has been kicking around Marvel Comics for over a decade now. When Kevin Feige announced that “Baby-Sitters Club” actress Xochitl Gomez would officially portray the character of America Chavez in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” comic fans were thrilled. But as for the wider world, there was a lot of confusion. Who was America Chavez? What does her character add to a film that already includes big Marvel characters like Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch?
If you’re one of the people asking those above questions, we’re here to help school you on this awesome superhero you probably have never heard of. Aside from a short-lived 2017 solo series, America has mostly been a side character in comics like “A-Force,” “Ultimates,” and “West Coast Avengers.” So it’s not surprising that a lot of people haven’t heard about her. But it seems like Marvel is finally letting her have the spotlight, and we’re betting she’s going...

On Friday, word got out that Xochitl Gomez (of Netflix’s Babysitter’s Club) was joining Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the sequel to Marvel’s trippiest pre-Endgame movie. And with a title like that, and the presences of Marvel’s foremost reality bender, the internet collectively gasped “America Chavez!” together. But who is she? And why is she such an obvious addition to the cast of Doctor Strange 2?
“Ms. America” Chavez is a relatively recent addition to Marvel canon. She was introduced by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta in 2011’s Vengeance. She was raised by her two mothers in a utopian pocket dimension. Her moms both appeared to die closing black holes that threatened her city, and inspired by their heroism, she abandoned her reality for the multiverse.
When she arrived on the main Marvel Earth, she joined the Teen Brigade and fought, among others, a teenage Loki.

A report has surfaced from McU Cosmic that Marvel Studio is planning to introduce Miss America, a.k.a. America Chavez to the McU at some point in the future.
I guess this really shouldn’t come as a surprise, as any Marvel character that celebrates diversity will probably end up finding their way into the McU at some point! For those of you not familiar with the character, she is a a Latin-American gay immigrant superheroine who was a member of the short-lived New Teen Brigade, the Young Avengers, and the Ultimates. She is a tough, no nonsense super heroine, yet one with a genuine desire to help others and do good.
The report speculates that her inclusion furthers Marvel’s possible plans to assemble The Ultimates in the McU. Other members of that team include Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Monica Rambeau.

Stars like Anna Kendrick have been trying to vision-board their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a tactic that Jane The Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez is also giving a shot. While on a SXSW panel with Doctor Strange scribe Jon Spaihts, Rodriguez let slip which Marvel superhero she’s dying to play, and it’s someone who probably isn’t on Marvel studio’s horizon right now. Rodriguez, who knows her comics, says she’s a huge fan of America Chavez, the second hero to carry the Miss America mantle, and tells Geeks Of Color she’d love to play her on screen.

"There was blood everywhere – a lotta blood," Slipknot percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan tells Rolling Stone with glee in his voice. "It was on my shoes. It was on my jacket. It'd be on monitors."
The percussionist, who also works as a photographer and provides his band with many of its stomach-churning visuals, is talking about Officer Downe, the first feature film he's directed. The movie, which just came out, is an adaptation of the gory graphic novel of the same name about a policeman who is brought back from the...

Crime can kill him, but it can't stop him from doing his job. Based on Joe Casey and Chris Burnham's cult graphic novel of the same name, Officer Downe follows a cop who is brought back to life—again and again—to protect his city against eclectic crime organizations that are armed to the teeth. Ahead of the film's November 18th release from Magnet Releasing, we caught up with Officer Downe screenwriter, producer, graphic novel writer and co-creator Joe Casey for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the movie's journey to the big screen, working with Slipknot's Shawn Crahan on his feature film directorial debut, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Joe. When you and Chris Burnham created the Officer Downe graphic novel, did you ever imagine that you would get the opportunity to adapt it into a film?
Joe Casey: Absolutely not.

The heavy metal group Slipknot and the cult action film “Crank” may not have much in common face, but creators from both entities have come together to adapt a hyper-violent graphic novel. Slipknot co-founder Shawn Crahan, a.k.a. “Clown,” and “Crank” co-director Mark Neveldine have brought Joe Casey’s “Officer Downe” to the big screen. Written by Casey himself, the film stars Kim Coates (“Sons of Anarchy”) as Officer Downe, a deceased police officer resurrected from the dead to keep fighting crime. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Even though Halloween is over, that doesn’t mean the horror genre is slowing down for the month of November, as fans have a bunch of great movies hitting VOD to look forward to this month. "My city's gone to hell..." As the titular character in Officer Downe, Kim Coates takes on an eclectic array of criminals in the film's official trailer.
"Adapted from the 2010 graphic novel by Joe Casey and Chris Burnham, Officer Downe concocts a hyper-real Los Angeles for the story of a savage La policeman who is repeatedly resurrected and returned to active duty via dark science technology. When a rookie officer named Gable is recruited as back up, he discovers there's much more to the titular super-cop than a mindless law enforcement drone warring against a twisted rouges gallery of over-the-top super-villains.

While the film itself is a bit of a mess, I still appreciated the enthusiasm and fervor that went into making Officer Downe, the big screen adaptation of Joe Casey and Chris Burnham’s graphic novel of the same name. An over-the-top and unapologetic celebration of ultra-violence, sex, immature humor, and the mayhem that makes cult cinema so great, Officer Downe is an ambitious first-time feature from M. Shawn Crahan. And while a lot of the movie feels disjointed and doesn’t necessarily succeed in its efforts, the parts that do come together in Officer Downe give the movie some really weird and wildly fun moments. With a few tweaks, I’d be game for more escapades with Los Angeles’ ultimate police officer and justice-seeker.

Orgasm high scores. Exploding prop heads. Poorly dubbed kung fu masters. A shit-kicking cop who can’t be killed. All this and more can be found in Shawn Crahan’s absolutely batshit insane Officer Downe, a graphic novel adaptation that oozes B-Movie absurdity through reckless decapitations and renegade heroics. Think Dredd, but with an aggressive stress put on not giving a single flying fuck about anything – like, even less than Judge Dredd’s zero tolerance policy.
Kim Coates plays Officer Terry Downe, a “special” lawman who is resurrected each day to clean the streets of Los Angeles. He’s a one-man wrecking ball with his own designated clean-up crew, including the newly assigned Officer Gamble (Tyler Ross). After witnessing the unimaginable, Gamble struggles to understand how Officer Downe defies the afterlife, which causes some friction in the bullpen with other more accepting officers – but there’s no time to waste.

Celebrating its world premiere this weekend at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival is the graphic novel adaptation Officer Downe, which was written by Joe Casey (who also wrote the source material) and directed by M. Shawn Crahan, (also known to fans worldwide as “Clown” from Slipknot). The film stars Kim Coates as the titular character: a badass cop unable to die and Los Angeles’ last form of protection from a corrupt future world.
Produced by Mark Neveldine and Skip Williamson, two of the maniacs behind the Crank series, Officer Downe looks to be a balls-to-the-wall actioner that takes no prisoners (pun absolutely intended).
Daily Dead caught up with Coates prior to the film’s premiere to hear more about his experiences taking on the lead role for Officer Downe, collaborating with Crahan on the film, why the world needs more badass movies, and the virtues of playing an immortal character.

The 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 1st, and this year’s Nightfall lineup looks to be yet another strong selection of genre films set to thrill festival-goers night after night.
For those of you in the southern California area, the 2016 Laff runs through Thursday, June 9th and is calling the ArcLight Culver City Cinema home this year. Here’s a look at what we’re anticipating once the Laff begins later this week, and for more information on the festival, please visit:

Full disclosure: Abattoir was edited by my significant other, so I am certainly biased, but my enthusiasm for the film comes from my excitement to see Bousman return to the hardboiled world of horror after working on The Devil’s Carnival musicals and his comedy-infused segment in last year’s Tales of Halloween anthology.

Yes, that is what producer Mark Neveldine claims.
The new film, Officer Downe, based on the graphic novel of the same name, follows the foibles of "an L.A. supercop who is killed in the line of duty but is repeatedly resurrected and sent back onto the streets." It was created by Joe Casey, who also penned the screenplay.
Slipknot cofounder and drummer Shawn Crahan is making his directorial debut with Downe.
What do you think? Do you trust Neveldine's opinion? One thing is for sure, he knows what a bad Marvel film is, after all he directed Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, one of the worst film adaptations of a comic.

It is a both an app and a publisher, being a platform optimized for smartphones that offers exclusive original content by award-winning writers and illustrators, including Evan Dorkin, Sarah Dyer, Joe Casey, Irene Koh, Brian Wood, Ron Wimberly, Stuart Moore, and many more.
The founders of Stela come from the comics, gaming, and mobile gaming industries; and its leadership includes Creative Director and Editor-in-Chief Ryan Yount, and Senior Editor Jim Gibbons (formerly of Dark Horse Comics). It's an exciting time to be a Man of Action fan. The consistently innovative and impressively productive studio / writers' collective has intriguing upcoming projects on the printed page and onscreen, and at San Diego Comic-Con, Daily Dead caught up with Joe Kelly, Joe Casey, Steven T. Seagle, and Duncan Rouleau, who discussed the Camp Midnight graphic novel, the respective feature films for Officer Downe and I Kill Giants, as well as Big Hero 6 and more.
As per usual with you guys, it's been another busy year for the Man of Action team. Your Comic-Con exclusive comic book from last year, The Bus: A Camp Midnight Mini, is being expanded into a 256-page graphic novel that will be released in time for Halloween. Steven, how did Camp Midnight make the transition from mini comic to full-length graphic novel?
Steven T. Seagle: The mini comic was actually a bit of a ruse.
