Mercy (2014)
Written by: Matt Greenberg, Stephen King (Short Story)
Directed by: Peter Cornwell
Cast: Chandler Riggs (George), Dylan McDermott (Jim Swann), Mark Duplass (Uncle Lanning), Francess O’Connor (Rebecca), Joel Courtney (Buddy), Hana Hayes (Girl Next Door), Amanda Walsh (Charlotte), Chris Browning (Frank), Shirley Knight (Mercy)
If you notice from the credits, “Mercy” is a feature length film that is based on a short story from the modern day master of horror himself, Stephen King. In my humble opinion, I don’t think that Stephen King is one of those guys who you either love or hate. Regardless, of whether you judge him exclusively within the horror genre or when films based on his work crossed out of horror, such as “The Green Mile”. There is something from Stephen King for everyone, and at least one of the many things he wrote that resonates...

Jason Blum’s new label, Bh Tilt, is wasting no time in rolling out eagerly anticipated genre titles that have been stuck in picture purgatory. Today, less than a month after Bh Tilt launched, the banner made three titles available on Digital HD: Joe Johnston’s Not Safe for Work, the Chandler Riggs-starring Mercy, and Bryan Bertino’s Mockingbird, and the latter two have released trailers to go with their debuts.
The first movie from writer/director Bryan Bertino since 2008’s The Strangers, Mockingbird will be released on Blu-ray and DVD only at Walmart on October 21st, in addition to its current availability on Digital HD. The Hollywood Reporter just issued an odd little article which adds some insight into the films produced by Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions. In it were updates on two projects that are currently sitting on the shelf: Mercy and Mockingbird.
According to THR, the Stephen King adaptation Mercy, directed by Haunting in Connecticut's Peter Cornwell and starring Dylan McDermott, Frances O'Connor, Chandler Riggs, Joel Courtney, Shirley Knight, and Chris Browning, finished shooting a year ago and is among the Blumhouse films sitting on Universal’s shelf.
Studio chairman Donna Langley says the studio still is not counting it out. What does that mean exactly? Probably that they will just dump it on home video and move along.
Synopsis

According to an update from Deadline.com, Mark Duplass (Zero Dark Thirty) has joined the cast of Mercy, the film adaptation of Stephen King's skin-crawling Skeleton Crew short story "Gramma," about two boys and their creepy bed-ridden grandmother, who turns out to have occult powers. The story, which is loosely tied to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, was previously adapted by accclaimed author Harlan Ellison for the '80s Twilight Zone series, but this will be the first feature-length version. "Gramma" was adapted for the screen by writer Matt Greenberg (who previously adapted King's 1408) and directed by Peter Cornwell (A Haunting In Connecticut). Duplass will co-star with Dylan McDermott (American Horror Story), Frances O’Connor, Chandler Riggs, Joel Courtney, Shirley Knight and Chris Browning. The film is tentatively slated for a 2014 release.

Another short story from Stephen King’s 1985 collection Skeleton Crew is headed for the big screen. Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead) has signed to Gramma, and is playing young, Georgie, who has to take care of his ill grandmother when his mother needs to venture to a hospital to see her other son, who has broken a leg. It seems the old lady is a wirtch. Gramma was adapted once before as an episode of the New Twilight Zone back in 1986 with a screenplay by legendary author Harlan Ellison. Peter Cornwell (A Haunting in Connecticut) is directing this new take, now called Mercy, based on a screenplay by Matt Greenberg. The film will also star Mark Duplass, Dylan McDermott, Francis O’Connor, Shirley Knight, and Super 8’s Joel Courtney.

The Peter Cornwell film also stars Francis O’Connor and Dylan McDermott, who I would feel less creepy posting photos of.

Sundance just kicked off that that means we should have a decent amount of horror acquisition news over the next couple of weeks. Blumhouse Productions announced that they have picked up a found footage horror project, titled Peachfuzz, and posted two set photos from Mercy.
Patrick Brice is the director on Peachfuzz, which “follows a man who answers a Craigslist ad with unexpected results.” Additional plot details were not released, but based on the sales poster below, we’re assuming this is a werewolf movie. Mark and Jay Duplass are producing the film, which Deadline mentions is not 100% finished. *Updated with full reading and Q&A* Stephen King made a rare appearance at the University of Massachusetts Lowell last week to discuss his take on writing with students and answer questions. He also appeared before a larger crowd to discuss some of his past work and read his new story, titled Afterlife.
While Stephen King has always been popular, it seems that the release of new written works and movie adaptations have picked up speed in the last few years. In 2013, we’ll be able to read his long-awaited sequel to The Shining, titled Dr. Sleep. We’re also getting a crime novel, Joyland, and it looks like a couple of short stories as well.
On the movie front, a remake of Carrie will be released to theaters in March, starring Chloe Moretz. Tom Holland is also adapting The Ten O’Clock People, John Cusack is set to star in an adaptation of Cell,...

Mercy is poised to be a genre powerhouse. In addition to being based on a Stephen King story, it was adapted for the screen by Matt Greenberg (Halloween: H20, 1408). Dylan McDermott has been cast in the lead role of the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's short story Gramma, which had been re-titled... Mercy.
The story is part of King's 1985 short story collection Skeleton Crew. It follows two young boys who go with their single mother (O'Connor) to take care of their elderly, senile grandmother named Mercy, only to discover that she's a witch who made a pact with a dark force many years before.
The coolest part about this story is that its set in set in H.P. Lovecraft's the Cthulhu Mythos. It includes characters, creatures, and unearthly powers that are featured in Lovecraft's work.
McDermott joins the previously cast Frances O'Connor. Peter Cornwell (The Haunting in Connecticut) is set to direct it from a script written by Matt Greenberg (1408, Halloween H20). Jason Blum, best known for the Paranormal Activity franchise, will produce alongside McG.

Dylan McDermott, who’s returning to American Horror Story, also revealed that he is joining the cast of Mercy, a film adaptation based on the Stephen King short story Gramma (which was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft). The story came from King’s Skeleton Key, a short story anthology.
The film is directed by Peter Cornwell (The Haunting In Connecticut) and is another film from Blumhouse Productions. Last week it was announced that child stars Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead) and Joel Courtney (Super 8) had joined the cast. Along with Frances O’Connor, this cast is coming together pretty nicely (and quickly!). With the Lovecraft and King vibes, you can bet we’ll be covering it the whole way.

When he isn't being mixed up with Dermot Mulroney on Saturday Night Live, Dylan McDermott has been appearing on American Horror Story, with his first on screen appearance in the FX drama series' second season taking place just last night. And it looks like he'll be sticking around the horror genre for one of his upcoming feature roles, as he's been cast in Universal's adaptation of Stephen King's short story Gramma, titled Mercy. Directed by Peter Cornwell, Mercy follows two brothers who go with their mother to visit their dying grandmother, who just so happens to be a witch who made some kind of deal using black magic years ago. Frances O'Connor is on board to play the mother, and late last month, we learned that Super 8's Joel Courtney and The Walking Dead's Chandler Riggs were set up to play the brothers. I know, I know, this title sucks! But here comes an explanation. You already know that Peter Cornwell is on board to direct Mercy for Universal, right? And you also know that we’re talking about an adaptation of Stephen King‘s short story. But that short story is Gramma, and the feature film will be Mercy. It’s basically the same thing, but they want to confuse us! Anyway, the good news for today is that another great name is attached to star in this drama thriller – Dylan McDermott!
