After a competitive bidding war that received multiple offers, Gabrielle Union’s I’ll Have Another Productions has sold a queer teen comedy feature, with the working title “To Be Real,” to Amazon Studios. Tony winner, current Emmy nominee and recent Emmy winner Billy Porter — who’s been shooting his feature directorial debut “What If?” for Orion Pictures this summer — is attached to direct an original script by Ryan Shiraki, as sold from a pitch. Shiraki, a prolific TV director (“On My Block”) is also an executive producer on the upcoming HBO Max animated series “Santa Inc.,” starring and executive produced by Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman, and created by Alexandra Rushfield.

Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Est on MTV
Over the past few weeks, a new relationship combined with continuing senior year woes have left Jenna eager to leave high school behind and go to college. This week’s episode sees Jenna get a glimpse of the unglamorous side of college, in a fun outing that potentially starts Matty down a new path.
Matty’s journey towards coping with his adoption continues to be a fascinating aspect of the season. To date, the only people he has been open and honest with about his adoption have been Jenna and Sadie, both of whom have been more concerned with being a friend. Opening up to his cellmate,...

Awkward., Season 4, Episode 6: “Crowning Moments”
Written by Liz Sczudlo
Directed by Ryan Shiraki
Airs Tuesdays at 10 Pm on MTV
At the beginning of senior year, it was clear that Tamara had a plan for how things would go, a plan that unexpectedly hit a snag when Jake broke up with her. It’s been increasingly clear that the breakup rattled Tamara, who has subsequently attempted to re-engage Jake via catfishing. This week’s episode sees the former’s deception come to light, in an enjoyable outing that pushes a number of characters forward.
Having Tamara’s catfishing get exposed is a fascinating aspect of this week’s episode. Tamara’s near-obsessive desire to win Jake back has clearly had an effect on her other professional duties over the past few episodes, and it’s the possibility of reconciling with Jake that has kept her going.

Awkward, Season 2, Episode 6: “What comes First: Sex or Love?”
Written by Lauren Iungerich
Directed by Ryan Shiraki
Airs Thursdays at 10:30 Pm on MTV
Relationship navigation can be a tricky thing at all ages. The concern and worries that accompany it, however, are only exacerbated in high school, where an air of “this is the most important thing in your life” permeates every decision. Throw in the question of sex, which is a weighty subject in itself, and love, and everything gets that much more complicated. Ultimately, though, their own feelings on the subject is something everyone has to confront and arrive at sooner or later, and following the three magic words Jake said to Jenna at the end of last week’s episode, her grappling with the issues at hand was inevitable. In dealing with a topic as tricky to navigate as love and sex, there’s always...

Episode 2 “Knocker Nightmare” / Episode 3 “The Way We Weren’t”
Directed by Ryan Shiraki
Written by Lauren Iungerich
After a successful pilot, Awkward. returns with a raunchy yet charming 22 minutes focusing on a teenage girl’s nightmare of having a photo of her breasts posted online and all over school. The photo of Jenna (Ashley Rickards), taken courtesy of Sadie (the show’s scene stealer), is no laughing matter, but the writers of Awkward. know very well how to blend humour in the most serious stages of teenage hell. But Jenna isn’t the only one showing off her cleavage. We learn that her mom spent her college tuition to get breast implants; say hello to Princeton and Harvard, she says while pinching away at each nipple.
While most teen sitcoms avoid any characterization of the adults, Awkward. manages to show a good deal of humour, with the parents...

Chicago – When Tina Fey made the jump from “Saturday Night Live” to “30 Rock,” she was planning on taking her talented co-star and friend Rachel Dratch to the award-winning show. Before the season began, Dratch was replaced by Jane Krakowski and the rest is history. But there was a promising comedy with a great cast on Dratch’s resume that all of us thought would bring her back to the spotlight called “Spring Breakdown”. Now that comedy is being quietly released straight-to-dvd/Blu-Ray. There’s no justice in the comedy world.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 It’s not that “Spring Breakdown” is a comedy masterpiece that necessarily deserved a wide audience, but while watching it I was struck by the disparity between the sexes. Male-driven junk about horny boys looking for sex like “Fired Up,” “Sex Drive,” or “Miss March” automatically gets a theatrical release, but if a female-driven film isn...

There's an interesting new interview in The Advocate with funnywoman Rachel Dratch about the just-out-on-dvd Spring Breakdown (which the film's out director Ryan Shiraki calls a "gay acid trip"). The talk turns to her new film, the Nia Vardolos vehicle My Life in Ruins, and one scene in particular involving an "Entry in rear" t-shirt and "lecherous gay men" that is sure to ruffle some feathers:
Totally cringe-worthy! I was horrified when I saw that. But here’s the inside scoop: I know that Nia fought tooth and nail to get rid of that part. She’s upset about that. I saw it at the Tribeca Film Festival, and that’s the scene I was talking about the next day. I was like, "Oh, my God, I'm going to have to warn all my gay friends." On the page it was kind of bad, but those predatory slow-motion shots of...

What is a Sundance Film Festival without a Parker Posey movie? This year the unofficial Queen of Sundance starred in writer-director Ryan Shiraki's Spring Breakdown, about three women "holding on for one more day." At the festival, I caught up with Posey's co-star Jane Lynch, one of the funniest character actresses around; her previous credits include being part of Christopher Guest's ensemble -- Best in Show, For Your Consideration -- plus Role Models, The 40 Year Old Virgin and other scene-stealing roles.
For the most part an amusing movie performed by amusing women, and yet with no theatrical release to speak of, Spring Breakdown should see more life on DVD. (It arrives on disc this week.)
Lynch has also been doing some fine work on the small screen as of late, including the Starz Network's Party Down (about a catering company), and Fox's cheery new Glee.

Rachel Dratch is to Tina Fey, as George Lopez is to Freddie Prinze. The former is the less funny version of the latter. When Tina Fey wrote the screenplay for Mean Girls she created an insightful and apt film taking timely aim at teen culture. In writing Spring Breakdown Rachel Dratch retreads a story so common and overused that even National Lampoon has slowed its pace on the subject: spring break. The well of spring break comedy has run dry. It ran dry years ago. Drunken teens, foam parties and girls gone wild can only serve as the butt of so many jokes. Spring Breakdown hasn’t refreshed the topic – hell, we can’t even say it’s beating a dead horse; the movie is shuffling its feet in the dust of the horse’s skeletal remains.
Three girls graduated from college under the impression that a lack of popularity fades naturally.

Amber Tamblyn has joined the cast of Spring Breakdown, a comedy Ryan Shiraki wrote and is directing for Warner Bros. Pictures and Code Entertainment. The story revolves around three thirtysomething friends who break the monotony of their uninspired lives by vacationing on an island that is a popular spring break getaway for college co-eds. One of the women works for a powerful senator whose daughter is one of those co-eds, only she's as geeky as her chaperones. Tamblyn portrays the senator's daughter.
