Antonio Gambale led the winners at Tuesday’s Screen Music Awards, picking up two prizes for his work on Netflix’s Unorthodox.
This year’s ceremony, jointly staged by Apra Amcos and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers, was virtual, hosted by Justine Clarke, Meyne Wyatt and Claudia Karvan.
Clarke used the opportunity to urge government to support the industry, in particular screen composers, in the wake of Covid-19.
“I implore all of you listening, and in particular the Federal Government, not to leave the Australian composers behind as you undertake industry reform.
“There remains a huge opportunity for the Australian Government to further invest in the creation and commissioning of Australian content, and in particular, our composers, to fully celebrate their skills and talent. There is now greater risk that our creatives, our composers, and our small businesses will be left behind in the fast-changing global landscape that is ahead of us.

Whenever Disney announces a new live-action film, there’s a collective: “Ah, shit. Here we go again.” It shows a lack of creativity in taking their animated works and making them “real”. Judy & Punch falls under the category of taking an established story from one medium and bringing it to life in another, but it’s unique in the way it does so. It takes the traditional trappings and characters of the British Punch and Judy puppet show and plays them out in live-action with magical whimsy in this black comedy about a puppeteering duo. Their performances aren’t simply a dance of marionette strings, but art imitating life in very punchy ways, and with themes that have hard-hitting relevancy as writer-director, Mirrah Foulkes, reimagines an old, misogynistic tale into what she calls, “a feminine inversion of the traditional hero’s journey.”

Have you ever wondered about the old Punch and Judy puppet shows? Probably not, but still, the new film Judy and Punch hopes that you at least have pondered the time period that produced those violent puppet shows. For better or worse, the movie takes on the vibe of that sort of a show. The result is a flick that has manic moments of inspiration, needless violence, and a lack of a defining characteristic. In getting to the punch (no pun intended) at the admittedly well executed conclusion, too many odd paths are taking. It all just makes for a sometimes interesting mess that falls short of being recommendation worthy. The movie initially seems to be outlining how the Punch and Judy shows came to be, but it then takes a turn. At the start, we see Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herriman) operating a puppet show in the small town of Seaside,...

If her most recent performances have proven anything, regardless of what era she might find herself in, Mia Wasikowska is fed up with the patriarchy. After outsmarting the male leads in last year’s Sundance premieres Piercing and Damsel, the actress heads to the medieval era in Judy & Punch, which serves up a heaping of darkly comedic Australian revenge. Putting a modern, live-action spin on this fable-esque puppet tale, director Mirrah Foulkes crafts a vibrant, brutal directorial debut, even if the ultimate catharsis leaves something to be desired.
With opening typeface straight from The Witch, we’re introduced to the town of Seaside, which is nowhere near the sea. A marionette show from Punch (Damon Herriman), the self-proclaimed “greatest puppeteer of his generation,” and his wife Judy (Wasikowska), who is actually the brains behind the operation, is the town’s main attraction–at least when it’s not stoning day.

Robert Connolly.
Writer, director and producer Robert Connolly will receive the 2018 Distinguished Services to the Australian Screen Award at the Screen Music Awards later this month.
Musical director Jessica Wells will be joined by musicians Jared Underwood, Damian de Boos Smith, Julian Langdon and special guest bass player Jonathan Zwartz to pay musical tribute to Connolly on the night.
The Distinguished Services award is selected by the Apra board of directors. Over his career, Connolly has showcased the works of composers such as Lisa Gerrard, Alan John, Bryony Marks, Nigel Westlake, François Tétaz and Evelyn Ida Morris in his film and television projects.
Connolly said: “I remain in awe of the creative insight and impact that composers have contributed to the film and television productions I have worked on. So many times the profound emotional and narrative elements that have eluded me as a filmmaker have been so much more clearly explored by the composer.
