The 'Cloverfield' and 'Let Me In' director beats out an impressive shortlist.
There has been talk about Warner Bros. upcoming big-screen adaptation of The Twilight Zone for some time now, with a shortlist of directors including Christopher Nolan and Michael Bay circulating among the other news sites. But all of that speculation can now most likely be put to rest. Deadline reports that the studio has picked Matt Reeves to be the movie's director. Reeves rose to prominence in 2008 with Cloverfield, a found footage monster movie that famously had one of the coolest viral marketing campaigns on the planet. He followed that up with last year's Let Me In, an adaptation of the 2008 Swedish vampire flick Let The Right One In, that wasn't too shabby either provided you weren't on the "they're remaking it that quick? Blasphemy!" side of the argument.

Having drawn up a shortlist a few weeks ago, Warner Bros has now picked who it wants to enter The Twilight Zone.
A couple of weeks back, we reported on the list of potential directors who were on Warner Bros' shortlist to direct their big screen re-boot of The Twilight Zone. The list included Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay, Alfonso Cuaron, David Yates and Rupert Wyatt. They’re all very different directors in terms of style who would have provided their own unique spin on the source material.
Warner Bros, however, now has its man, and the job hasn't gone to one of the names on that aforementioned list. Instead, it's gone to Cloverfield and Let Me In director Matt Reeves. The plan is to sign him up and get working on the script, with a view to begin shooting next year.

Warner Bros has found it's director for their upcoming Twilight Zone movie. Deadline reports that they have chosen Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield) to direct the Jason Rothenberg-scripted thriller based on the classic Rod Serling TV series. A number of top directors wanted this gig, but Reeves and WB will enter into negotiations early next week.
The Twilight Zone is being produced by Appian Way partners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran, and Michael Ireland. The previous Twilight Zone film was an anthology with different directors, but this is planned as a big sci-fi action movie with a single freestanding story that is linked to the original series. It is hoped that the deal will close soon so that Reeves can work on the script and get the picture into production by next summer.

We already knew Warner Bros. has been searching for a director to help them bring The Twilight Zone back to the big screen, and today word has come down that they've made their choice: Let Me In and Cloverfield director Matt Reeves.
Per Deadline final negotiations will get under way early next week for Reeves to helm the Jason Rothenberg-scripted thriller based on the classic Rod Serling TV series. So much for earlier reports that Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay, and Alfonso Cuaron were the final three directors in contention!

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is certainly en vogue in Hollywood right now. It seems like you can’t turn around without bumping into another Frankenstein film in development and 20th Century Fox is no different in cooking up its own take on the classic horror tale.
According to Variety, 20th Century Fox has tapped Max Landis (Chronicle) to write the screenplay for their untitled Frankenstein project. No director is currently attached to the project though the studio has been courting David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum), and Ron Howard (The Dark Tower).
Not much more is known about this particular Frankenstein project save that Davis Entertainment will be producing. Take a gander at some of the other Frankenstein projects under development right now:

As writer Steve Niles tweeted recently, “Haley Joel Osment sees dead people again, but this time in pieces.” There are multiple Frankenstein-themed projects in development right now with different studios but this one has just nabbed The Sixth Sense star.
According to Variety, Haley Joel Osment (Sassy Pants, AI) will star as Victor Franklin in a film adaptation of Steve Niles’ (30 Days of Night) graphic novels, Wake The Dead. This modern day Frankenstein tale follows Victor, “a college student experimenting with reversing death.”
Jay Russell (Ladder 49, Tuck Everlasting) will direct the film with a script he adapted along with James V. Hart (Tuck Everlasting, Bram Stokers’ Dracula). Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, will be producing the project with Michael Williams and Rob Eric of Slasher Films, Slash’s production company dedicated to horror films. Haley Joel Osment, who earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Cole Sear in The Sixth Sense, is set to return to acting after an 8-year break for school. The now 23-year-old actor was last seen in 2003′s Secondhand Lions.
Variety reports Osment will star in Wake the Dead, an adaptation of 30 Days of Night author Stephen Niles‘s graphic novel that takes the Frankenstein story and sets it in the present day. Osment will play a college student named Victor Franklin who, in his studies, experiments with reversing death.

"It's the story of what formed him psychologically to put him on that path, to become God, to create life. It's actually a very, very sad, painful story, but a wonderful adventure and love story too. In many ways, like 'Let Me In,' [it's] a coming of age story, but one that sort of ends up being the creation myth for one of the great stories of our time." 20th Century Fox and producer John Davis have hired rising scribe Max Landis ("Chronicle") to pen a script for a new take on the "Frankenstein" tale says The Hollywood Reporter.
Vulture adds that this version will tell the tale through the eyes of Igor, Victor Frankenstein’s assistant. Davis, son of John Landis, will obviously produce. This is yet another version of the tale in the works, joining a half dozen in development.
They include Guillermo del Toro's remake of the 1931 Universal film adaptation, Summit Entertainment's adaptation of Kenneth Oppel's "This Dark Endeavor", Stuart Beattie's adaptation of "I, Frankenstein", Ghost House Pictures' adaptation of Peter Ackroyd's novel "The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein", Guns n Roses guitarist Slash's comic adaptation "Wake the Dead", and Sony Pictures' contemporary re-telling from a pitch by Craig Fernandez.

Matt Reeves, the director behind Cloverfield and the recent Let the Right One In remake, Let Me In, has a few new projects lining up for the future. The latest of said projects to be announced is something of a prequel to Mary Shelley's classic horror story, Frankenstein, that will be titled This Dark Endeavor.
It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein and his twin brother, Konrad, who are very close and have been all their lives. When Konrad becomes deathly sick, Victor remembers a library he and his brother once explored—and were forbidden to return to by their father—filled with books of remedies and various alchemical concoctions. Victor returns to the library and discovers the "Elixir of Life," and sets off to seek the help of an alchemist in finding the ingredients necessary to create the elixir and save his brother's life.

Of course, Reeves can’t possibly direct all the movies he’s currently signed up to direct. Let’s see, there was that “They Live” remake, aka “8 O’Clock in the Morning”, an adaptation of Justin Cronin’s “The Passage”, and now, yet another Hollywood “re-imagining” of an old character — this time, Frankenstein for Summit Entertainment. Why is Mary Shelley’s monster suddenly so popular again? Twofolds: it’s an instantly identifiable character, and plus, it’s in the public domain, so no expensive rights fees! Summit’s Frankenstein is not to be confused with Stuart Beattie’s “I, Frankenstein” or rock’n'roller Slash’s contemporary take on the creature called “Wake the Dead” from “30 Days of Night” writer Steve Niles. And those are only two projects that I’m aware of off the top of my head. Reeves’ version will be based on the soon-to-be published novel by Kenneth Oppel...

Matt Reeves moved from director of interest thanks to Cloverfield to something approaching A-list status with Let Me In. He's certainly lining up a few high-profile genre projects, and the latest is This Dark Endeavor, an adaptation of the Kenneth Oppel 'young Frankenstein' novel that Summit optioned [1] not too long ago. The other is The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, which Sam Raimi's Ghost House pictures is producing. That one just hired playwright David Auburn to script. The story is about "Frankenstein's gravely ill twin, Konrad. His brother seeks out a mysterious old alchemist to help him produce the Elixir of Life, a serum that will bestow the gift of perpetual health. For directing one of the biggest bombs of 2010, Matt Reeves is certainly getting signed to a surprising number of projects. I love the guy for Cloverfield, but as great as the technical execution for Let Me In was, I agree with audiences, who thought it was pretty unnecessary. I’m eager to hear the next project for the talented up-and-coming director though. As we reported he was attached to an adaptation of Ray Nelson‘s sci-fi short story 8 O’Clock in the Morning, as well as an adaptation of Justin Cronin‘s hit vampire novel, The Passage. Deadline now reports another project he has been signed to.
He will team with Mean Creek‘s Jacob Aaron Estes for This Dark Endeavor. Based on the Kenneth Oppel novel This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein, which gets published this summer, the story follows “Frankenstein’s twin Konrad who gravely ill and his brother,...

Back in February we heard that Summit Entertainment had picked up the rights to Kenneth Oppel's forthcoming novel This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein. Now they have quite a duo for directing and writing the feature as Deadline reports Let Me In and Cloverfield helmer Matt Reeves will be directing the film from a script by Mean Creek writer and director Jacob Aaron Estes. The story follows a young Victor Frankenstein as he attempts to find the three rare ingredients needed to create the Elixir of Life in order to save his twin brother, Konrad, who has become gravely ill. For a little more in depth look at the story, here's the book's official synopsis: Victor and Konrad are the twin brothers Frankenstein. They are nearly inseparable. Growing up, their lives are filled with imaginary adventures...until the day their adventures turn all too real. They stumble...

While Matt Reeves hasn't quite decided how he's going to followup the excellent "Let Me In," he's certainly giving himself lots of options. Last month the director signed on to direct two films--the sci-fi "8 O’Clock In The Morning" and the vampire pic "Passage"--and he's staying with the supernatural for yet another film he's putting his name to. Deadline reports that Reeves has signed to direct "This Dark Endeavor," a new spin on the Frankenstein tale. Based on the forthcoming book by Kenneth Oppel, that will be adapted by Jacob Aaron Estes ("Mean Creek," "The Details") the story begins as…...

Vampires, werewolves and zombies have had their fun. Now it's time for another classic monster to get in on the action.
The tale of the well-meaning if tragically misguided medical student and his wretched Creature will be told once again as "The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein" is in the laboratories of Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert's Ghost House Pictures, according to Deadline.
"Casebook" is based on the novel by Peter Ackroyd, which covers the youthful days of Frankenstein as he begins experimenting with corpses, influenced by the outspoken English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Percy's wife Mary -- the real-life author of "Frankenstein" -- appears as a character as well. The book is being adapted by David Auburn ("Proof").

The one Frankenstein film I'm dying to see up on the big screen is Guillermo del Toro's vision, but at this rate it I have no idea when and if it's ever going to actually happen. So to tied us over we are going to get a few more Frankenstein movies that are in various stages of getting made.
The latest project is a film adaptation of the Peter Ackroyd novel called The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, which has attached Pulitzer-winning Proof playwright David Auburn to write the script. The movie is set up at Sam Raimi's production company Ghost House Pictures, and the "story covers the youthful days of Frankenstein, who begins experimenting with corpses, influenced by the outspoken English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, whose Mary wrote the book. She's a character in the film as well."
So on top of this and the Del Toro adaptation,...

Such is the case with the upcoming adaptations of the Peter Ackroyd novel The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein and the Kenneth Oppel novel This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein.
According to Deadline the first adaptation, which once had Timur Bekmambetov attached to direct, will see Pulitzer-winning Proof playwright David Auburn sign to write the script. The project is set with Rt Features and Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures.

It's no surprise that with the recent wave of zombie and vampire re-imaginings of classic novels that someone would finally venture into the world of Frankenstein. Well Kenneth Oppel has done just that with the release of "This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein" set for later this year.
Summit Entertainment just acquired the rights to the story, a prequel to the original Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel. The story follows Victor Frankenstein and his twin brother Konrad. Growing up nearly inseparable, the two brothers find The Dark Library, filled with books of alchemy and ancient remedies. Victor's curiosity reaches a high when their father forbids them from ever entering the room.

Summit Entertainment has picked up the screen rights to Kenneth Oppel's upcoming action adventure novel "This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein" says Deadline.
The pseudo-prequel to the Mary Shelley classic follows young Victor Frankenstein and his attempt to save his gravely ill twin brother Konrad. An alchemist sends Victor and his best friend Elizabeth on a quest to find three rare ingredients needed to create a fabled serum that will give the drinker perpetual health.
There's betrayal, a love triangle, and lots of references to Shelley and her original "Frankenstein" novel with this setting up the subsequent storyline for that tale.
Karen Rosenfelt ("Twilight") is onboard to produce. The novel will be published by Simon & Schuster in the summer.

Apparently the young adult novel-to film craze isn’t quite done yet. Quite the contrary, actually.
Deadline is reporting that Summit has nabbed up the rights to the novel penned by Kenneth Oppel, entitled This Dark Endeavor. The film adaptation of the novel will be produced by Karen Rosenfelt, and follows a young Victor Frankenstein, as he attempts to save his brother from an illness, by locating the materials for, and thus creating, the Elixir of Life. The novel ultimately plays like a direct set-up for the story of Frankenstein, giving a bit of a back story to the tale.
