MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski analyzed the Israel-Palestine tension on college campuses Monday with guest Richard Haass, a U.S. diplomat who pointed out the decline in safety amid rising animosity between college students.
“This is outrageous what is going on, and the universities are clearly failing educationally and they are clearly failing in their obligations to make students feel safe,” Haass said in video you can watch below. “We hear all this talk Mika about safe spaces. Well, what’s happening on these campuses? These have become truly unsafe spaces. Kids are feeling pressure, they’re feeling intimidated, physically threatened. There’s something seriously wrong on our campuses.”

In addition to promising pardons to those involved with the January 6 attacks on the Capitol, Donald Trump has now promised to donate to the legal fund of the defendants still awaiting their fate. But the hosts and panelists of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” are a bit skeptical on that promise, considering it would mean the twice-indicted former president would have to “give away any of his own money.”
In discussing Trump’s latest pledge on Monday morning, host Mika Brzezinski called it “pretty twisted,” but Jonathan Lemire was largely unsurprised.
“The bottom just keeps getting lower. Why not?” Lemire snarked. “I mean, he’s called January 6 a beautiful day, he has promised to pardon most of the January 6 rioters, he has now suggested he’ll make a contribution to the legal defense fund and, of course, let’s not forget, he has appeared with a January 6 choir convent.”

Like everyone else in the world, the “Morning Joe” studio discussed the saga of the China spy balloon Monday.
On Saturday, the U.S. military shot down the suspected Chinese balloon off the coast of South Carolina, after it had made its away across much of the U.S. Republicans have criticized Biden for not shooting the balloon down sooner, as it was able to float over sensitive military installations. China claimed the balloon was a meteorological research vessel that was blown off course.
The balloon also stalled a planned meeting of high-level officials from the U.S. and China on Friday. When news broke of it floating about 60,000 feet above the mainland U.S. last week, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken postponed his trip.

Chuck Todd apologized on Tuesday for airing a clip of a CBS News interview with William Barr that left out a key part of his quote about how history will view his decision to drop the prosecution of Michael Flynn.
In the aftermath of the airing of the clip on Meet the Press on Sunday, President Trump called for Todd’s ouster while the Justice Department raised objections.
On Meet the Press Daily, Todd said, “I wanted to talk for a moment about something that occurred on Sunday’s edition of ‘Meet the Press.’

President Donald Trump lashed out again at Meet the Press host Chuck Todd, calling for him to be fired after the Sunday show aired an edited clip of Attorney General William Barr talking about the Justice Department’s decision to drop the Michael Flynn case.
This is certainly not the first time that Trump has targeted Todd: He’s tweeted or retweeted about him 14 other times since taking office, while the President has been on a tear about NBC and its parent company, Comcast, in some of his public statements and at briefings and rallies.
In the clip shown on Sunday’s Meet the Press, Barr, in an interview with CBS News’ Catherine Harridge last week, is asked, “When history looks back on this decision [to drop the Flynn case], how do you think it will be written?”

The set of “Morning Joe” analyzed the growing challenges President Trump is facing ahead of his planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June.
Co-host Willie Geist said that North Korea’s assertion last week that they would not be denuclearizing had derailed the meeting.
“Well, Kim Jong Un threw him off balance last week when the North Korean government put out a statement that says we’re not giving up our nukes and President Trump went ‘uh-oh, that was the point of doing this,'” said Geist. “When the bar had been set at fire and fury — the alternative is war — anything beneath that, it seems to me, Donald Trump will claim as some victory … maybe even a photo-op.”

Well, the truth finally came out on “Morning Joe.”
On Wednesday, frequent “Morning Joe” guest Richard Haass suggested that not only did America have a “deep state,” but upstanding career bureaucrats like Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was proof that the country needed one.
The surprising admission came after a lengthy montage the show ran of Republicans praising Rosenstein’s service.
“It was great listening to that. That was a civics lesson and it’s why you need a deep state,” said Haass, who also serves as the longtime president of the Council on Foreign Relations.

“You need people whose commitment is not to the person, but is to the process and the law,” he added. “You would want every high school kid in America to watch that. You know good for him. That’s just what this country needs. And that’s kind of who we are. That’s our DNA. That was actually a really good moment.”
Donald Trump’s battle against “deep state” enemies in the Department of Justice and the FBI has become an animated battle cry among his staunchest supporters online and on the far right.
The love for Rosenstein on set was precipitated by news that a series of unnamed Gop lawmakers in the House had circulated articles of impeachment against the man who is now leading the Department of Justice’s investigation into collusions between the Trump presidential campaign and Russia.

Rosenstein offered a feisty response to the news himself on Tuesday during a wide-ranging discussion at the Newseum to celebrate “Law Day.”
“I think they should understand by now that the Department of Justice is not going to be extorted,” he said. “We’re going to do what’s required by the rule of law, and any kind of threats that anybody makes are not going to affect the way we do our job.”

James Comey didn’t change many minds on the set of “Morning Joe.” On Monday, the show regulars gathered and mostly dismissed the former FBI director’s hour-long ABC interview on Sunday evening.
“One of the unfortunate things of all of this is that it’s happening. There’s enough of a circus now” said Council on Foreign Relations chief Richard Haass. “This was self-interest, not national interest.”
Haass also suggested that Comey’s justification for his interventions in the 2016 election were “intellectually unmoored.”
Also Read: 'Morning Joe' Feels Sorry for 'Good Guy' Michael Cohen: 'Very Gentle' (Video)
“One of the biggest contradictions was when he said it would have been brutally unfair for him to have brought to the American public attention the fact that Donald Trump’s campaign was also under investigation for ties to Russia because he didn’t know if there was anything there,” offered NBC News reporter Heidi Przybyla.
“Well, what was his decision days before the election to bring to the American people the fact that there was Anthony Weiner’s laptop which also by the way they had no idea if there was anything there, any kind of information that was worth anything.”
To that point, Joe Scarborough capped it off saying that while Comey may have been in a bind, reopening the Clinton email investigation days before the election could have been handled more artfully.

“If he would have just said something like, ‘I am notifying Congress only because I am required to do so by prior agreement, however, no one should draw any conclusions from this letter, it is simply a notification,'” said Scarborough. “He didn’t do that.”
On Sunday, Comey kicked off what will be a week-long media blitz to promote his new book, “A Higher Loyalty.” The hour-long ABC special with George Stephanopoulos received mixed reviews Monday morning.

Tonight, Real Time with Bill Maher continues the series’ 16th season on HBO — with guests including David Frum, Richard Haass and ‘The Mooch”. Hopefully, this show will be a better one than last week’s awkward panel who went loggerheads with Bill over his agreement with President Trump’s edict that Jerusalem was in fact the correct capital of Israel. That, and the going nowhere mid-show interview with Zooey Deschanel, were a huge disappointment. Maher’s had better shows and, hopefully, tonight’s juicier lineup will spark some interesting and intelligent conversation and debate.
