Actor Andrew Scott recently joined the 77th BAFTA Awards ceremony in support of his 2023 romantic fantasy film All of Us Strangers, which received six nominations, including Outstanding British Film and Best Director. However, he encountered a rough start to the evening as he faced uncomfortable questioning regarding Barry Keoghan’s performance in Saltburn. Directed by Emerald Fennell, the film has been in conversations due to its unsettling and explicit scenes, particularly Keoghan’s fully nude dance scene.

A BBC journalist conducting an interview with Scott at the 2024 BAFTA Awards seemed pretty fixated on obtaining the actor’s perspective on Keoghan’s nude scenes in the film and repeatedly asked him some uncomfortable questions about it, leading the Irish actor to abruptly end the interview midway and leave the scene.

One of the highlights of Jesse Malin’s quarantined livestream series, The Fine Art of Self-Distancing, has been his cover of Tom Petty’s “Crawling Back to You,” a track off of Petty’s 1994 LP, Wildflowers. Malin saw Petty perform the song at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017 — at what would be Petty’s final show.
“I’d seen him before, but this was like magic,” Malin told Rolling Stone during an interview for his latest album, Sunset Kids. “That night under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl, he went into ‘Crawling Back to You,...

Carlene Carter, whose family legacy was explored at length in Ken Burns’ Country Music, turns 64 on Thursday. The granddaughter of Mother Maybelle Carter, and daughter of June Carter Cash and singer Carl Smith, Carter made her recording debut in 1974 with “Friendly Gates,” a track from stepfather Johnny Cash’s LP The Junkie and the Juicehead, Minus Me. The album, which also featured a solo cut by June Carter Cash, was a true family affair, shining early solo spotlights on Cash’s daughter Rosanne, and Carlene’s sister, Rosey. “Friendly Gates...

The Italian singer Andrea Bocelli hit Number One on the albums chart this week, selling more copies of Si over seven days in the U.S. — 126,000 — than he had with any of his non-Christmas albums in the last decade.
In one respect, this is not surprising. Over the course of a lengthy career, the 60-year-old Bocelli has sold a shit-ton of albums — at least 21.5 million in the U.S. alone, according to the RIAA — with a voice that makes wealthy grandmas weep. That means he can still play arenas here,...

Although Hank Williams’ death at age 29 on January 1st, 1953, marked a premature end to what had been a remarkable career, his legacy has survived — and thrived — not only through his classic recordings but also through the two generations of family members who have forged their own paths in country music and beyond. Williams, who was born 95 years ago on September 17th, was followed into entertainment by his two children, Hank Williams Jr. and Jett Williams, and more recently by Hank Jr.’s children Shelton (a.k.a. There are underappreciated musical legends, and then there is Graham Parker. If you're blanking on who he is, the singer/songwriter was featured in "This Is 40," with Paul Rudd's record executive hoping to revive this career and give him the spotlight he's long deserved. And now the musician is getting another an opportunity to shine with the documentary "Don't Ask Me Questions: The Unsung Life Of Graham Parker And The Rumor." And today we have a peek at the film. Directed by Michael Gramaglia ("End Of The Century"), and featuring the participation of Judd Apatow, Bruce Springsteen and more, the documentary catches up with the 59 year-old Parker at a creative crossroads, finally allowing his music to be placed in commercials and TV shows, which may give him long overdue exposure. And in this exclusive clip, we learn how one of his better known songs, "Local Girls" (featured in...

Graham Parker isn’t quite ready to give up his rock and roll to act, but in Judd Apatow’s This Is 40, he put his acting chops to the test as a rock and roll legend with less than stellar album sales.

Chicago – Why should Judd Apatow and Lena Dunham have to apologize for making films about white upper-class people, considering they are indeed members of the white upper-class? Does their whiteness make their voices any less worthy of being heard? Is it the painstakingly intimate nature of their comedy that rubs some viewers the wrong way? Would these viewers prefer impersonal formulaic retreads populated by token representatives of every race on earth? I can’t imagine anything more dull.
“This is 40” may not be Apatow’s finest hour on film (that remains his game-changing debut effort, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”), but it is still a splendidly insightful comedy chockfull of deliriously amusing vignettes. It also shows the director attempting to mine deeper emotional territory in the scenes between middle-aged couple Pete and Debbie (played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, reprising their roles from “Knocked Up”). In This Is 40 Graham Parker plays a rock star who is signed by Paul Rudd’s character’s (Pete) record label and ultimately isn’t able to make anywhere near the amount of money that Pete had hoped. What some younger fans may not know is that Parker isn’t simply an actor, but rather he’s the lead man of Graham Parker and the Rumour, a popular British band of the late ’70s and early ’80s.
The band has recently reunited for a new album and a tour in addition to their appearance in Judd Apatow’s film. In honor of the film’s upcoming home entertainment release, I had a chance to sit down with Parker and discuss the film. We talked about how he originally got involved, what it was like working with Apatow, his process of learning how to act on set, and more.

Opening on Valentine’s Day here in the UK, Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 is the sort-of sequel to the blockbuster comedy success, Knocked Up. The original film featured a stellar and impressively diverse soundtrack, including the likes of Bright Eyes, The All-American Rejects, The Clash, and Britney Spears.
And with Apatow at the helm once more, it’s no surprise that the sort-of sequel brings with it another brilliant selection of music for the Ost.
Apatow has reteamed with music supervisor/editor Jonathan Karp for This Is 40, who worked on the original film (and many other of his projects), and the sixteen-song soundtrack is expectedly fantastic. A selection of classic, remastered tracks that sit alongside nicely with younger artists.
Yoko Ono kicks the proceedings off with Yes, I’m Your Angel. I admit I’m not particularly familiar with Ono’s music (and know her more for...

Judd Apatow casts his own wife and children in this terrifically assured comedy about a stressed-out couple approaching midlife point-of-no-return
How interesting to compare the title of Judd Apatow's midlife comedy This Is 40 with his first feature – The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which famously starred Steve Carell as the tragically inexperienced nerd. The whole idea of not having done it by the age of 40 looked like an outrageous and bizarre fantasy. Yet maybe we were misreading it. This new film shows how Apatow's debut could actually have been a through-the-menopausal-looking-glass parable. In This Is 40, not having sex at this age is a brutally real experience, a depressing kind of reconstituted virginity for married types who increasingly find themselves too exhausted for sex, and too guilty and loyal for the extramarital sex of their daydreams.
It certainly looks like personal work. Forty-five-year-old writer-director Apatow has cast 44-year-old Paul Rudd as...

Universal Studios has announced the latest Judd Apatow comedy This is 40 for Blu-Ray in March. This sort-of sequel to Knocked Up stars Leslie Mann, Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy and Jason Segel.
As far as I’m concerned Judd Apatow used to be one of the funniest men working in Hollywood. His name was at one point plastered over every Universal comedy, acting as either a writer or producer, while occasionally stepping in to direct. His first two films showed promise and a return to the almost forgotten R-rated comedy, but then he kind of struck out with Funny People.
I’ve actually warmed up to Funny People over time, but I still can’t get over its horrible pacing and constant need to shove Apatow’s wife Leslie Mann into almost every scene. Which makes This is 40‘s whole existence sort of troubling right out of the gate.

Even though the theatrical cut runs well over two hours, it seems that, as usual, a lot of material has been left on the cutting room floor from Judd Apatow's "This Is 40." And with the story (partially) centering on the floundering business of Paul Rudd's character's record label, it would appear that at one time there was a lot more focus on the artists he was representing or looking to sign. In case you're playing catch up, "This Is 40" takes Pete and Debbie from "Knocked Up" and spins them off into their own film that follows their trials and tribulations as they approach the big four-oh. Among them, Pete heads into financial ruin as he tries to relaunch '70s rocker Graham Parker. In a previous deleted scene, we saw Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day pitch a side project, and now we get to see Mark Everett...

Forget This is 40. What’s really on Judd Apatow’s mind these days is This is Broadway.
In the January 2013 issue of GQ, the comedy guru reveals that he’s writing a play, and no, it doesn’t star Seth Rogen. Heck, it’s not even a comedy. “I have a great idea. Maybe like the best idea I’ve ever had,” he said. “It requires me to create characters and situations that have absolutely nothing to do with my experience.”
That may be a positive thing creatively, since Apatow’s recent experience reads like a series of Variety news briefs.

Judd Apatow's Knocked Up sequel is undermined by characters for whom we have little sympathy
Judd Apatow – king of the tangent, lord of the wander – bumps a subplot up to full story status with this directionless sequel-cum-spin-off to his 2007 hit Knocked Up.
It's five years since ambitious TV journalist Alison (Katherine Heigl) got pregnant by a shabby stoner (Seth Rogen) after a drunken one-night stand. Mum, dad and baby are doing so well that there's no need to visit them here.
Instead, we'll spend 134 minutes with Alison's sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann, Apatow's off-screen wife) and her husband Pete (Paul Rudd).
They live in an affluent suburb of La with their two kids, Sadie and Charlotte (Apatow's kids, Maude and Iris). Debbie owns a clothes shop, Pete runs a failing record label. They're both approaching their 40th birthday, and have decided to celebrate by ploughing headlong into a crisis.

After much success in one genre a film maker can become an adjective (in the Golden Age it was “Capra-esque”) and can branch out into a brand name with their production house presenting films from other directors with a similar sensibility. This was the case with Mel Brooks, then Zaz (Zucker,Abrams,Zucker of Airplane fame), the Farrelly brothers, and now Judd Apatow. After great box office success from producing (Anchorman), he directed several hits (starting with The 40 Year Old Virgin), then his company became the home to more comedy smashes (particularly last year’s Bridesmaids). Now Apatow is behind the camera for his fourth directorial feature (based on his script), This Is 40. He’s returned to the world of his 2007 film Knocked Up, but it’s not the standard sequel. Ben (Seth Rogan) and Alison (Katherine Heigl) aren’t sending their toddler off to kindergarten. Instead Apatow...

Chicago – Judd Apatow’s “This is 40” is a true disappointment, a comedy that purports to say something honest and insightful about approaching middle age in the ‘10s but blurs truth by smothering it in contrivance and cliché. Strong work from Leslie Mann and Albert Brooks rescue the project from complete disaster but the largely-unfunny and almost entirely disingenuous script mark this as the talented Apatow’s most notable misfire.

Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Mann) seem happy enough. Their sex life has waned in recent years as the magic has dissipated due to exhaustion and a bit too much sharing of Pete’s ass (whether he’s on the toilet playing with his tablet or literally asking his wife to look in his butt for medical problems) but they’re good parents, living a good life. “This is 40” is about a troublesome chapter in that good life...

While turning 40 in Judd Apatow's latest might not be pretty, the writer/director/producer knows that of the many things that mark mid-life, music is a big one. And perhaps more than any other of his films to date, "This Is 40" is stacked with music. The official soundtrack boasts 17 songs, including new tunes from Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker, and Lindsey Buckingham. The movie itself features even more, including a handful of unlikely surprises. For example, pieces from Michael Giancchino's score for "Lost" are featured, along with "Fantine's Death (Come To Me)" from the original Broadway cast recording from "Les Miserables" (is this some kind of super sly Universal cross promotion?). Meanwhile, the '90s are represented with tunes from Stone Temple Pilots, The Pixies, Alice In Chains and Sublime, there are roof raising jams from Missy Elliott and David Guetta, while The Band, Paul Simon and Chicago.

Universal Pictures has released a batch of new high resolution photos from Judd Apatow’s upcoming comedy, This Is 40.
Five years after writer/director Judd Apatow introduced us to Pete and Debbie in Knocked Up, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles as a husband and wife both approaching a milestone meltdown in This Is 40, an unfiltered, comedic look inside the life of an American family.
After years of marriage, Pete lives in a house of all females: wife Debbie and their two daughters, eight-year-old Charlotte (Iris Apatow) and 13-year-old Sadie (Maude Apatow). As he struggles to keep his record label afloat, he and Debbie must figure out how to forgive, forget and enjoy the rest of their lives…before they kill each other.
In his fourth directorial outing, Apatow’s new comedy captures what it takes for one family to flourish in the middle of a lifetime together.

Los Angeles—In Judd Apatow’s “This is 40,” Paul Rudd plays a music executive trying to bring back British singer/songwriter Graham Parker. At last night’s sold-out show at the Roxy here, Parker proved he needs no help. Playing his first show with his original band, The Rumour, at the venue in more than 30 years, Parker headlined the “This Is 40” soundtrack release party. Fittingly enough, Apatow opened the evening, announcing, “This is a ridiculously good show,” before sitting beside Rudd for the rest of the evening. He was right. Also appearing on the bill were Ryan Adams and Lindsey Buckingham, both of...

It's already been revealed that the soundtrack for Judd Apatow's "This is 40" -- his sort-of-sequel to "Knocked Up" -- will feature another choice selections of cuts, including songs by Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Avett Brothers, Loudon Wainwright and more. But even more appealing is the fact that there are four artists who contributed new songs to the film's soundtrack, including Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Graham Parker (who cameos in the film), and Lindsey Buckingham; all produced by the film's composer Jon Brion (Wilco and Ryan Adams also contribute new/live versions of previously known songs). It's a bit of a Dad-rock mix, but hell, it fits the material, and these kind of song selections served the tone for "Knocked Up" and Apatow's previous film "Funny People" extremely well. This is a long-winded way of saying, here's a first listen of Apple's new track "Dull Tool" and it...

It's not every day that Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono work on the same project, but music fans have Judd Apatow to thank for making just that happen. The two music legends have both contributed songs to the soundtrack for Apatow's "This Is 40," joining a stellar line-up that includes Paul Simon, Fiona Apple, Ryan Adams, Norah Jones and many more.
Ono's song is called "I'm Your Angel" while McCartney's is titled "Lunch Box Odd Sox." The latter tune was first released in 1980 as a bonus track on a Wings album, as NME notes.
The two recently made headlines when McCartney said that Ono was not to blame for the Beatles' breakup, refuting a long-standing rumor. (He did, however, say that it was difficult to always have her around.)
"Dull Tool," Apple's contribution to the soundtrack, marks the first time the singer has crafted an original song for a film.

A midlife crisis never sounded this good. For his upcoming sidequel/spinoff "This Is 40," Judd Apatow reached out to some pretty big names to write some new tunes for his movie, with more than a few song titles hinting at a rocky emotional ride for Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann). Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker, and Lindsey Buckingham have all contributed new songs, produced by the film's composer Jon Brion, with Wilco and Ryan Adams providing new and/or live versions of "I Got You (At The End Of The Century)," "Lucky Now" and "Shining Through The Dark." (Does this mean there's going to be a Ryan Adams cameo in the film?). The rest of the set is rounded out with tunes by Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Avett Brothers, Loudon Wainwright and more. Pretty solid Dad rock mix all around. The soundtrack drops on December 11th,...

The previously announced Fiona Apple will be joined by Ryan Adams, Norah Jones, the Avett Brothers, and, of course, Graham Parker, on the soundtrack for Judd Apatow’s “This Is 40.” While tracks from some of the artists, including Paul Simon, the Avetts, and Loudon Wainwright, have been released before, the cuts from Jones, Apple, Parker (who plays heavily into the plot), Lindsey Buckingham, Wilco, and Adams are all original. Jon Brion composed the score and produced several of the new cuts, including Apple’s “Dull Tool.” The soundtrack comes out Dec. 11. Read Drew McWeeny's review of "This is 40" here. The...

Judd Apatow Cast Graham Parker in 'This is 40' After Reading a 'Funny Blog' Entry by the '70s Rocker
Comedy writer/director/producer Judd Apatow had good reason to appear at the Oct. 25 Billboard/Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference on a panel hosted by The Hollywood Reporter’s music editor Shirley Halperin. A huge music fan, Apatow powers his movies and shows with canny music cues, including his latest, This Is 40, starring Paul Rudd as a guy running a struggling independent music label. Rock legend Graham Parker costars as a Rudd client, along with his real-life band the Rumour, winners of the 1979 Village Voice critics’ poll, now reunited (really) after 30 years. For Apatow, music is a family
