All summer long, writers and actors led a backlash against artificial intelligence outside studio gates. “AI has no soul,” one picket sign read. “ChatGPT doesn’t have childhood trauma.”
But in the end, the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA embraced a balanced approach to the technology. Both guilds obtained job protections against AI abuse, including consent and protection against diminishment of pay. But their agreements also allow the use of AI tools both in screenwriting and in the creation of performances.
AI companies have been pleased with the outcome, which sets up guardrails for further development of such tools.
“I’m happy with the agreement the WGA made,” says James Yu, the co-founder of Sudowrite, an AI fiction writing tool. “We believe in the power of the writer to choose whether to use AI or not. It’s all about the agency of the writer.”
The WGA ratified its agreement on Oct.

Six weeks after being convicted for possessing and transporting child sexual abuse material, former ABC News producer James Gordon Meek and his footprint in the world of investigative journalism are quietly disappearing.
Hulu removed Meek’s Emmy-nominated documentary “3212 Un-Redacted” from its platform this past week. The film, which delves into the deaths of four U.S. Special Forces soldiers in Africa and exposes a government cover-up, was produced by ABC News and first launched on Hulu in November 2021.
A source familiar with the matter says the film’s licensing window expired and will not be renewed. Although the film, which is based on Meek’s reporting, was considered an impressive feat of investigative journalism, the prospect of keeping it on Hulu became untenable given that the disgraced producer is featured prominently on camera.
Likewise, ABC News also has quietly removed a tagline from all of Meek’s work that read:...

Good news for those who enjoyed the campy/thrilling delights of survival thriller :a[Fall]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/fall/' } — and potentially terrible news for anyone who fears getting vertigo in a cinema or on their sofa. Following on from :a[word back in March]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/fall-sequel-in-the-works-after-success-on-netflix/' } that a sequel was in development to Scott Mann's high-altitude film comes the news that production company Capstone Studios is green lighting not one but two movies.
Fall which debuted last year, saw :a[Shazam!]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/shazam-review/' }'s Grace Caroline Currey and :a[Halloween]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/halloween-2018-review/' }'s Virginia Gardner as friends who ill-advisedly scale and get stuck up a 2,000-foot radio tower in the desert.
What follows is a tale of hot temperatures, hotter tempers and bad things for a vulture in particular.

Get ready to fall even harder! Last year's surprise hit thriller "Fall" is getting not one, but two sequels. Capstone Studios, the company behind the project, feels strongly that they have a franchise on their hands and have now officially turned this into a trilogy. The first sequel is due to begin filming next summer, with much of the original creative team returning.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Scott Mann will return to produce both movies, and he will co-write and direct "Fall 3." There is no word yet on who is going to wind up in the director's chair for "Fall 2," or why Mann won't be directing all three films. Capstone may intend to do them back-to-back, which would make it more challenging for the same filmmaker to direct both installments. The first film was originally R-rated, but landed a PG-13 rating after some F-bombs were removed from the edit.

Fear reached new heights in Lionsgate’s Fall last year, a heart-pounding tale of survival from the producers of 47 Meters Down that was released in August 2022. We learned earlier this year that a sequel was on the way, but now it seems that Two sequels are in the works.
THR reports this morning that Capstone Studios has given the green light to not one but two sequels to Fall, with Fall director Scott Mann returning to produce the sequels.
Additionally, Mann will co-write and direct the third installment.
But first, Fall 2 is set to begin shooting in June 2024.
THR notes, “Fall 2 and Fall 3 will bring back original characters from the first film, while also leaving room for new ones to be introduced.”

Earlier this year, we heard that director/co-writer Scott Mann and the producers at Tea Shop Productions were developing a sequel to the survival thriller Fall (watch it Here), which became an international success when it reached the Netflix streaming service. While doing the press rounds for Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, Fall star Grace Caroline Currey said she thought it would be “really cool” if she got the chance to come back for the sequel. Now it sounds like Currey is going to have a couple opportunities to return to the world of Fall, as The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Capstone Studios has green lit not just one but two sequels!

It doesn’t take a supercomputer to see our industry is stretched to breaking point. The ongoing dual strike reflects both individual and corporate concerns about livelihoods slipping away. Against this strained backdrop, generative AI has shot onto the scene.
As the co-founders of Flawless, we’ve been developing AI-powered filmmaking tools since 2018. Our goal is to help filmmakers, including myself, achieve their vision with the fewest compromises. As the power of AI tools became clear, so did the need to develop new corresponding artistic rights and methods to enforce them.
For us, AI’s introduction conjures parallels with a concept familiar to filmmakers everywhere: the hero’s journey. The story begins with a call to adventure, made in this case by AI. Then comes the hero’s refusal of the call, out of fear or doubt, which is where much of Hollywood finds itself. This is understandable considering AI...

[This story contains spoilers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Fall.]
Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Grace Caroline Currey quite literally put her blood, sweat and tears into Mary Bromfield and her superpowered counterpart.
Currey originally played young Mary in David F. Sandberg’s 2019 film, Shazam!, but ceded Super Hero Mary duties to Michelle Borth. However, with Mary now a full-fledged adult in the sequel, Sandberg promoted his frequent collaborator to the Shazamily, making her the only family member to play dual roles.
According to Currey, this scenario nearly played out in the 2019 film since Mary was right on the verge of adulthood.
“When they first cast me, they were toying around on whether or not to have the same actor for Mary, considering she’s the oldest of the kids,” Currey tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But now, with the second one, it was really neat to have that explanation that she’s an adult now.”

A lot of names have been bandied about to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond. Henry Cavill. Tom Hardy. Idris Elba. But there’s one actor who’s already synonymous with the role, and he’s nothing if not available: Sean Connery.
Deceased actors have been brought back from the grave before: Carrie Fisher, Paul Walker, Peter Cushing and Harold Ramis, among others, have each been resurrected for the screen, with mixed results, thanks to old-fashioned CGI wizardry. But recent, startling advancements in artificial intelligence promise to deliver far more realistic results than ever before thought possible. According to the experts, the technology needed to create a totally believable deep fake 30-year-old Connery is just around the corner.

Though it didn't set the box office on fire Fall still managed to turn a decent profit, making $17 million from a thrifty $3 million budget. But Scott Mann's high-altitude thriller has been making an impact in another useful metric: scoring well with Netflix viewers, which is now leading into early development of a sequel.
The movie, which debuted last year, saw Shazam!'s Grace Caroline Currey and Halloween's Virginia Gardner as friends who ill-advisedly scale and get stuck up a 2,000-foot radio tower in the desert.
What follows is a tale of hot temperatures, hotter tempers and bad things for a vulture in particular. It'll induce a real feeling of vertigo, especially for those who experienced it on the big screen.
Yet UK production company Tea Shop has seen it find a real home for UK viewers on Netflix, where it has spent time as the second-most viewed movie...

In news that's terrible for people with a fear of heights but fantastic for those with a penchant for schadenfreude thrills, Scott Mann's gripping survival horror film, "Fall," is getting a sequel. /Film's own Chris Evangelista described the film as a "surprisingly effective nail-biter" in his review and the relatively low-budget tale of two adrenaline seekers getting trapped on top of a decommissioned tower 2,000 feet in the air was a modest hit at the box office. However, a recent report from Deadline notes that the sequel news is not a result of the box office performance, but instead, due to the film's massive popularity on Netflix internationally.
The publication states that director Scott Mann and British producer Tea Shop Productions are currently brainstorming an idea for a follow-up feature, once again centered on the terrifying idea of being stuck somewhere way, way up high. "Fall" was initially supposed to...

Director Scott Mann’s thriller Fall, which stars Grace Caroline Currey (Shazam!: Fury of the Gods) and Virginia Gardner (Halloween 2018) as a pair of characters who get stuck at the top of a 2000 foot tall radio tower, was given a theatrical release, but it wasn’t really a break-out hit. More viewers watched it on Amazon, purchased it on Blu-ray or DVD (order it Here), or caught it on Starz or Netflix… and now Deadline has revealed that Fall was so successful on Netflix, a sequel is now in the works! Artificial Intelligence is poised to create a seismic shift in entertainment, and the technology isn’t just in development. It’s arrived and Hollywood needs to be prepared.
That was the message of a SAG-AFTRA-hosted CES panel, as AI-driven tools permeated the consumer tech show’s exhibition halls. Nina Schick, author and advisor on generative AI, projected that 90 percent of content may be — at least in part — AI-generated by 2025. She further predicted that everyone in the audience would be planning to use some form of generative AI within the month.
With these predictions, she raised some questions that Hollywood will have to grapple with as the technology becomes more widespread in areas of content creation, including deep fakes. “Is this technology automating us or augmenting us?” Schick asked. “Is this better than human intelligence?”
Where the critical area of deep fakes is concerned, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, national executive director and chief negotiator of SAG-AFTRA,...

If you thought you weren’t afraid of heights, think again – this utterly terrifying don’t-look-down thriller from director Scott Mann will have you clutching the sides of your seat in sheer sweaty-palmed panic. As such, it’s about as perfect a closing night film for FrightFest as it’s possible to imagine.
Fall begins with a prologue, in which daredevil climbers Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Runaways’ Virginia Gardner) undergo a devastating tragedy while scaling a rock face. A year later, Becky is still deep in depression and trauma, so Hunter decides that the only thing that will snap her out of it is to climb to the top of the 2,000 foot B67 TV tower — an abandoned communication tower located in the middle of the California desert.

Director Scott Mann’s thriller Fall, which stars Grace Caroline Currey (a.k.a. Grace Fulton, Shazam!) and Virginia Gardner (Halloween 2018) as a pair of characters who get stuck at the top of a 2000 foot tall radio tower, was given a theatrical release back in August and can now be viewed on Amazon or purchased on Blu-ray or DVD (order it Here). One viewer who caught up with the movie on Amazon was legendary author Stephen King – and he was so impressed with it, he took to social media to say he wished he had been the one who wrote it!
King tweeted, “Fall: Tight, terrific, and very, very scary. Reminded me a bit of Duel. Wish I’d written it.”
Fall was actually written by Scott Mann and Jonathan Frank. They crafted the following story:
For best friends Becky and Hunter, life is all about conquering fears and pushing limits.

Exclusive: WME has signed Scott Mann, who directed the thriller Fall. That film was released by Lionsgate, grossing 16 million on a 3 million budget.
The survival tale is about two adventurous women, one of whom lost her husband in a climbing accident. The friend of the widow tries to pull her pal out of a spiral by challenging themselves to climb an abandoned 2000-foot-high TV tower. Everything goes wrong, the climbers are too high to get a rescue cell signal, and an adventure turns into a terrifying fight for survival. Mann wrote the script with Jonathan Frank.
The film is currently streaming on Apple TV+, and here is how Stephen King described it: “Reminded me a bit of Steven Spielberg’s Duel. Wish I’d written it.”
Mann had been repped by CAA, and now WME will steer him as he looks for his next film to direct.

The culture which has grown up around online celebrities doing daring or even downright dangerous things for attention has been a gift to filmmakers. No clumsy machinations, no strenuous twists of plot are now required to get two young women to the top of a rickety iron radio tower which is supposedly one of the tallest structures in America. Now they can be set in position post-haste, so there is little delay in getting to the meat of the plot. In this case that is, as you will likely have guessed, the question of how to get safely down again.
In case it feels unreasonable to ask that you sympathise with someone who has got herself into such a predicament, Scott Mann’s thriller adds a complicating factor. Only Hunter (Virginia Gardner) is there for the clicks. Becky (Grace Caroline Currey – the darker haired, more plainly dressed one, in keeping with.

Kev has been dying to watch the Scott Mann flick Fall and finally here he is getting to talk about it. So let’s see what he thought.
Experience a heart-pounding tale of survival from the producers of 47 Meters Down where sacrifice may just be the only way out. A fast drop and a sudden stop awaits Becky and Hunter as they find themselves trapped 2,000 feet up an abandoned radio tower in the desert. Highly trained and resourceful, these climbers were still not ready for every eventuality. A series of unfortunate events see their gear and supplies taken from them and as temperatures rise and vultures begin to circle, the chance of survival begins to fall rapidly. Also starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen), Fall is produced & directed by Scott Mann (Final Score) and written by Mann and Jonathan Frank (Final Score).
Fall screened as part of this years Arrow Video London Frightfest.

Lionsgate thriller Fall will make an estimated 2.5+ million this weekend at 1,548 locations for a PSA of about 1,618. The audience was broader than it might have been after a company founded by director Scott Mann swapped dozens of f-words, moving Fall from an R to a PG-13 rating.
The firm, called Flawless, launched last year to specialize in foreign-language “vubbing,” for visual dubbing, which uses artificial intelligence to subtly shift lip and facial movements to match words spoken. But in Fall, its first project, the urgency was around English-language expletives by English-language actors during a stressful high-altitude shoot in the middle of Covid. Costly reshoots weren’t an option, nor really were cuts.

David Leitch’s action-packed Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt as a hell-bent assassin, easily stayed atop the box office chart in its second weekend as no new Hollywood summer even pic opened nationwide.
In normal times, studios would continue to release event films throughout August. This year is different as the entertainment business emerges from the pandemic and grapples with production and postproduction delays. Overall revenue for the weekend was around 66 million, a low point for summer 2022.
Bullet Train is considered the last big Hollywood studio title of summer 2022. Why Fall to Pieces?: Mann Mines Survival Formula for Anxiety Laden B-Movie
From the depths below to the heavens above, there’s no place safe for adrenaline chasing white women, at least according to 47 Meters Down (2017) producers Mark Lane and James Harris, who reconfigure the direction of their imperiled damsel formula for Scott Mann’s Fall. A simple plot packed with tangentially excessive window dressing to pass the time, this odyssey of two young women stuck 2,000 feet in the sky atop a perilous television tower is effective in its ability to induce anxiety (if not vertigo for the hyperbolically inclined).…...

A handful of smaller films will start to test audience enthusiasm for movie theaters without big tentpoles. It’s been a rocky summer for specialty releases, and an uphill climb as arthouses emerge from Covid jitters with franchise films sucking up oxygen and screens. But superheroes are on hiatus.
“There isn’t giant competition from tentpoles,” said Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions. “On balance, it’s good. Obviously, if you have Top Gun, it sucks the air out of the marketplace. It’s still better — for the specialty market — to have three or four indies than one giant release. After a summer that was nearly back to normal vis-à-vis pre-pandemic levels, we are now on the verge of what will likely be the lowest-grossing two-month stretch since before the summer of 2021. While the steady supply of blockbusters gave audiences numerous reasons to return to cinemas over the past three months, the remainder of August and September have schedules that are even emptier than usual for these typically quiet post-summer months. There are no major releases coming until October, and while there may be some sleeper hits among the counterprogramming, it won’t be a surprise if nothing in the next two months opens above 20 million and grosses above 50 million. The strong winter slate may bring a final end to the “pandemic-era” box office woes, but for now distributors and theaters must hope that some of the audience that came out for the tentpoles will also show up for the smaller films,...

After a pretty successful summer season, it’s officially the dog days at the domestic box office.
Without a major studio movie on the horizon, theater operators are banking on a smattering of smaller, lower-budgeted horror stories, comedies and dramas to take advantage of the lull in blockbusters. Basically, the next few weeks will cater to the rare ticket buyers who have been dying to return to the movies, but aren’t fans of comic book adventures or action tentpoles.
This weekend will be particularly quiet with Lionsgate’s action-thriller “Fall” and A24’s satirical slasher “Bodies Bodies Bodies” as the only new nationwide releases. According to tracking estimates, “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” which is expanding to 1,200 locations, is aiming for 2 million to 3 million in domestic ticket sales. Meanwhile “Fall,” which is debuting in 1,548 North American venues, is estimated to bring in 1 million to 2 million between Friday and Sunday.

This is going to be an epic weekend at the box office, and yes, I’m being about as sarcastic as I can be in this intro, because this weekend is what we call in the biz… “a complete mess.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview to see what movies will be competing against Brad Pitt‘s latest hit “Bullet Train” as it enters its second weekend.
I honestly have no idea studios were thinking when not one of them said, “Hey, this might be a good weekend to release something we originally planned for later in the year.” Instead, we’re getting a slew of new movies opening moderately – nothing in more than 2,000 theaters – while A24 expands its Gen-z horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies” into roughly 1,200 theaters to make a concerted play into the softer box office.

“Fall” is a very good “don’t look down” movie. It’s a fun, occasionally cheesy, but mostly ingeniously made thriller about two daredevil climbers, Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner), who decide to scale the B67 TV tower — an abandoned 2,049-foot communication tower that juts up in the middle of the California desert, 23 miles from Sacramento. It’s an actual structure, like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the skyscraper that became the pedestal for Tom Cruise’s you-are-there stunt sequences in “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” And if, like me, you loved that movie in part because of how deviously it toyed with your fear of heights, “Fall” is likely to hit you as an irresistible piece of vertigo porn. It’s for anyone who ate up “Ghost Protocol,” as well as the awesome rock-climbing documentaries “Free Solo” and “The Dawn Wall,” and wants to continue that shivery vicarious high.

Survival horror takes aim at acrophobia with Lionsgate’s adrenaline-seeking Fall. Two women trapped at the peak of a 2,000-foot radio tower in the middle of nowhere and with no cell signal means a series of obstacles to contend with beyond vertigo-inducing heights. While the lean, mean thriller does offer bursts of intense action and acrophobic chills, Fall crashes headfirst into a film we’ve already seen before, nearly beat for beat.
Best friends Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner), along with Becky’s husband (Mason Gooding), live to push their limits and chase extreme adrenaline rushes. However, one misstep on a mountain climb sends Becky into a deep depressive state that means retreating from friends, family, and her fearless ways. To shake her out of it, Hunter talks Becky into accompanying her on a bucket list excursion, scaling one of the world’s tallest structures. Becky and...

It’s been a year since Dan Connor (Mason Gooding) fell to his death while rock climbing with his wife Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and her best friend Hunter (Virginia Gardner). The latter was free-climbing and mocking the other two for being slow as they detached and reattached their ropes with every maneuver to create a semblance of safety. Rather than be ironic that Dan is the one who dies, however, the choice is purely driven by narrative and suspense. Whereas Hunter slipping would just be game over, he gets to hang and swing for a bit while desperately trying to grab a handhold and relieve the pressure put upon the nut/hex/chock holding his rope in place. We get a beat to hope for the best before he disappears.
As can happen after a tragic accident, Becky has all but disappeared herself. She hasn’t climbed since the...

Like a provisions-packed knapsack, a good deal of emotional backstory gets shoved into the first half-hour of “Fall” before it traps two female climbers 2,000 feet above the ground in a remote stretch of desert for the rest of its running time.
Will that friendship be tested? Of course. But the true signal that co-writer (with Jonathan Frank) and director Scott Mann has his thrill-hungry audience’s needs in mind is that before adventuring besties Becky and Hunter can even get to the base of the TV tower they intend to scale, they lock eyes with a carcass-gnawing vulture, who gets a righteously gnarly, ominous close-up.
In other words, you’re in good talons with “Fall,” a better-than-average B-movie corker that’s almost like a corrective these days to the behemoths that spend hundreds of millions of dollars on mayhem only to bludgeon us with exhilaration-free, numbingly digitized peril. If you...
