Taking 100 ownership of Abot Hameiri last year, Fremantle, which also co-financed the series, will bring “East Side” onto the market at this next week’s Mipcom trade fair and conference in Cannes.
To debut on Israel’s Kan 11 channel, “East Side” turns on Momi, a former Israeli secret service agent hired to take over a Palestinian neighbourhood, one home at a time. He attempts one last sale in order to set up for life his 18-year-old daughter Maya who is on the autism spectrum. The challenge is to wrestle ownership of a grand hotel which dominates entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City. Whoever controls the entrance controls the City, Momi is told. As the pandemic continues to catalyze major life changes, motivating — or necessitating — many to make a new start, a film such as “Golden Voices” resonates even more deeply. This neatly observed, rueful Israeli dramedy from Soviet expats Evgeny Ruman and experienced Dp Ziv Berkovich (marking his first time as a screenwriter) centers on a sixty-something married couple, long-time film dubbers from Moscow, who make aliyah to the holy land in 1990, part of a wave of Soviet outsiders who struggle to assimilate and find a new way to earn a living. With its committed performances and considerable humor, this mostly Russian-language Music Box Films release appeals to an older demographic and has been doing decent art-house business.
Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, Soviet Jews are finally allowed to leave the Ussr. Most immigrate to Israel, among them Victor (Vladimir Friedman) and his wife Raya (Maria Belkin). With their Russian...

At PÖFF | Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, the Israeli dramedy “Golden Voices” bagged the award for the Best Script penned by the film’s director Evgeny Ruman and the cinematographer and first-time writer Ziv Berkovich. The film was also given the Award by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (Netpac).
“Golden Voices” is a comedy addressing hardships of immigration, and although it plays quite safe without presenting many surprises, it is a witty and warm story about a Russian-Jewish couple that immigrates to Israel after the fall of the Iron Curtain, in hope of a better life. We meet Vitya (Martin Fridman) and Raya (Maria Belkin) descending the plane, excited and naïve like children, taking the first photo on Israeli soil. While they’re on it, their greeting committee, consisting of one overly enthusiastic lady, is nervously hurrying them up because she has a plane-full of people...

Exclusive: The Paz brothers are eyeing their first European production, titled Plan A.
Yoav and Doron Paz, the directing duo whose apocalyptic horror film JeruZalem had a work-in-progress screening at Jerusalem Film Festival (July 9-19) on Friday, are planning their first European production.
The film, which has a completed script and is titled Plan A, will be a historical thriller based on the Nakam, the Jewish revenge squad that targeted Nazi war criminals at the end of the Second World War; it promises to tell the real story behind Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Basterds.
“It’s an amazing true story that not a lot of people in Israel know about,” said Yoav Paz. “It’s about Jews after the Second World War who, after going through the Holocaust, through hell, decide they can’t go on with their lives as if nothing happened and decide to take justice into their own hands.”

The Man in the Wall
Written by Evgeny Ruman
Directed by Evgeny Ruman
Israel, 2015
Presented in the Bright Future Premieres programme section of Iffr 2015 as one of the nominees for the Fipresci prize of the festival, The Man in the Wall is a tense, excellently paced psychological drama with fleshed out characters that seem pulled on-screen directly from life itself. Although purportedly not (auto)biographical, the story nonetheless feels very personal.
Ancient Greek playwrights would likely commend Ruman’s water-tight script for its temporal, spatial and dramatic unity. The Man in the Wall is set during one rainy night in an apartment in Tel Aviv, never distracted for a minute from its central plot complication or straying into sub-plots. Rami, Shir’s husband (played by Gilad Kahana) suddenly disappears from the flat after taking the dog for a walk, leaving his wife to question his whereabouts through an uneasy night.

Thanks to Manhattan’s favorite cultural philanthropist, Carole Zabar -- you know her rugelach -- a second year of the Israel Film Center Festival will be unspooling at various venues around the city, but mainly at The Jewish Community Center on the Upper West Side from June 12th through June 19th.
A highlight of the fest is Yael Reuveny’s engrossing three-generation exploration of her family’s post-Holocaust existence, Farewell, Herr Schwarz, a paean to those trying to come to terms with the past.
Michla Schwarz, Yael’s grandmother, was the lone member of her family to survive the Holocaust, or so she thought. Immigrating to Israel, she married, raised a family, and died emotionally scarred with an unyielding hatred for everything German. Her daughter Etty, who remembered her mother screaming at night and being emotionally distant, is also enveloped in this decades-old enmity.
But one day just before Michla’s death,...

The 2012 Toronto International Film Festival line-up got another boost with today's announcement of the Midnight Madness, Vanguard and Documentary selections which include films from the likes of Barry Levinson, Don Coscarelli, Rob Zombie, Martin McDonagh, Ben Wheatley, Michel Gondry and Alex Gibney and include titles such as Aftershock, Dredd, Seven Psychopaths, Pusher, Sightseers, The We and the I, The Gatekeepers, Finding Nemo 3D, Hotel Transylvania and a Cinemateque selection that includes Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder, Roman Polanski's Tess and Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli. Considering Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master was recently added to the official selection as a Special Presentation I am going to have my hands full when it comes to screenings, but I will definitely make sure to catch McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths, which is one of my most anticipated films of the year. Otherwise, the schedule will determine which ones I check out. The...
