Euphoria executive producer Ron Leshem flew into Spain this week and recalled how Hollywood had initially turned down the HBO hit over concerns about teenage lead characters.
In a panel at Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria (Ipi) today focused on content for Gen Z, Leshem said both Euphoria and the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things hit the same roadblock, as networks initially fretted over the idea of teenagers leading a series that wasn’t specifically a teen drama.
“Everyone told us we needed to be more like Skins,” he said, referencing the influential British drama from Channel 4 that set Nicholas Hoult, Kaya Scodelario, Dev Patel, Joe Dempsie and Hannah Murray on the road to stardom.
“We didn’t want to do Skins. We wanted to stand out and do something different,” said Leshem, who eventually sold Euphoria to HBO alongside co-creator Sam Levinson. “Artistically, we wanted to do Trainspotting meets...

Where are the Skins cast now? Short answer: absolutely everywhere.
While the show did earn critical acclaim as well as a cult following over the course of its seven series, when this scrappy teen comedy drama launched on E4 in 2007 few could have predicted just how many household names it would spawn.
Among Skins’ impressive alumni are actors who went on to win Oscars and Baftas, play lead roles in hit movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Get Out, not to mention star in hit shows like Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders.
Let’s take a look at some of the Skins cast’s best roles:
Joe Dempsie – Game of Thrones
Playing party animal Chris in Skins was in a way good preparation for Joe Dempsie’s later role as Gendry in Game of Thrones, as both characters have some pretty serious daddy issues: Chris’ dad (played by Green Wing...

Hollywood is positively overflowing with talented British actors. Superman is British, Spider-Man is British -- hell, we're on our second British Batman. But if you've noticed that the vast majority of those actors seem to come from the south of England, that they all seem to have roughly the same accent, and (with a little more digging) that most of them went to prestigious private schools with eye-watering annual fees ... well, you're not the first to pick up on that.
One person with first-hand experience of the rigid class barriers within the U.K.'s film and television industry is Jack O'Connell, who plays rugged gamekeeper Oliver Mellors in the upcoming film adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's novel "Lady Chatterley's Lover." Subjected to censorship and banned numerous times throughout the 20th century, the book was controversial for its explicit descriptions of sex, but also for depicting an extramarital affair between...

Early during season 1 of “House of the Dragon”, HBO renewed the “Game of Thrones” prequel, confirming that the series would return for a second season. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel, “Fire & Blood”, which is a history book recounting notable events in Westeros in the 200 years before the original series, “Hotd” will continue to explore the in-fighting and intrigue surrounding House Targaryen.
With season 1 ending in dramatic fashion, with everyone in Westeros seemingly taking sides in the newfound battle between the Black Council and Green Council, here’s what we know about what’s to come in season 2.
Plot and Timeline
After spending most of season 1 establishing the main players in the battle of succession to follow the death of King Viserys, season 2 will inch the series closer and closer to war.

Maisie Williams always assumed her Game of Thrones character Arya Stark was queer until she read a ‘surprising’ scene for the final season. Speaking to Teen Vogue, Williams, who played Arya across all eight seasons of the Emmy-winning HBO drama, revealed she was taken aback when she first learned of Arya’s sex scene with Gendry Baratheon (Joe Dempsie) as she assumed her character identified as queer. “The first time that I was surprised by Arya, I guess, was probably in the final series where she whips off her clothes and sleeps with Gendry,” Williams explained. “I thought that Arya was queer, you know? So…yeah. That was a surprise.” The scene in question happened in the April 2019 episode “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” which sees Arya and Gendry sharing an intimate moment before the impending Battle of Winterfell. At the time of the episode airing, Williams told Entertainment Weekly...

Arya Stark straight? Even actress Maisie Williams was taken aback.
The “Pistol” star told Teen Vogue she was shocked by the “Game of Thrones” sex scene between Arya and her friend Gendry (Joe Dempsie) in the show’s eighth and last season.

It’s a twisty tale of a mother who carries out an act of bravery which suddenly exposes her to a world she had long since left behind, and a daughter who discovers she really doesn’t know her mum at all. With the edges of their already fraught relationship worn thin by the wearying toll of Laura’s treatment, the mother-daughter duo finds their lives thrown into complete upheaval after a random shooting — and the media attention that follows — puts them in the spotlight, exposing them to deadly figures from Laura’s past… a past that Andy knows nothing about.
As usual, Netflix has filled out their ensemble with familiar faces, up-and-comers and new discoveries so we’ve put together a handy (and spoiler-free) guide to the cast and characters of “Pieces of Her” to help you keep up with every twist and turn.

Mystery and violence take center stage in the Netflix adaptation of Karin Slaughter's "Pieces of Her," but one key character leaves us with more questions than answers by the season finale. "Pieces of Her" tells the story of a mother named Laura Oliver (Toni Collette), whose daughter, Andy (Bella Heathcote), is forced into hiding after a string of violent attacks on her birthday. Frightened, Andy drives across the country to evade the police. Along the way, she uncovers shocking clues that reveal a sinister connection between her mother and a man named Nick Harp (Joe Dempsie) who may be responsible for an infamous murder.
How Does Laura Meet Nick?
Told in part through flashbacks, "Pieces of Her" illustrates Laura's life long before Andy is born, when her name is Jane Queller (Jessica Barden) and she is the only daughter of a wealthy business mogul named Martin Queller (Terry O'Quinn...

You think you’ve got mother-daughter problems – but no! Aimless 30-year-old Andy Oliver (Bella Heathcoate), who shelved her New York dreams to return to small-town Georgia to nurse her mother, Laura Oliver (Toni Collette), through breast cancer, appears at first to have the usual issues. Post-op Laura pushes her daughter to leave the nest again and become an autonomous adult, and mopey stuck-in-a-rut aspiring artist Andy resists. Par for the course.
What upends it all? To celebrate Andy’s 30th birthday, Laura takes her out to lunch and a new round of nagging when all hell breaks loose. In a bravura set piece that recalls the crazy museum bombing that launches Donna Tartt’s “The Goldfinch,” a spurned boyfriend enters the mall restaurant, shoots his ex-girlfriend who’s leaving him for med school and keeps firing. Blood simple, he targets Andy, who’s wearing her police uniform from her night job answering 911 calls.

"There are just some things... you don't understand." As figures from her past start to resurface, she is forced to go on the run and on that journey, begins to piece together the truth of her mother's previous identity and uncovers secrets of her childhood. Also co-starring Bella Heathcote, with Jessica Barden, Jacob Scipio, Joe Dempsie, Aaron Jeffery, Omari Hardwick, Gil Birmingham, David Wenham, Calum Worthy, Nicholas Burton, and Terry O’Quinn.

Pieces of Her is poised to be one of the most talked about shows of 2022.
Netflix on Tuesday dropped a thrilling trailer for the Toni Collette-fronted drama series, and we're excited.
The trailer asks a very valid question:
What would you do if your mother was not who you thought she was?
“There are just some things you don’t understand,” Laura (Collette) warns in the clip.
The big hook is that Collette's character reacts to a sudden act of violence, setting off a chain of events that nobody could have imagined.
It has a very Ozark feel about it, and given that the fellow Netflix hit is ending, this could be a worthy successor.
The trailer also boasts that the show came from the people who made Big Little Lies and The Undoing, so we're inclined to believe this will be yet another hit for the streaming service.

Jodie Whittaker may be leaving Doctor Who behind. Over the weekend, shortly after the premiere of the show’s New Year’s special, The Mirror reported that the actress will be exiting the role of the Time Lord at the end of season 13, which is currently in production. The news isn’t official yet, then, but the outlet has a solid history of Who scoops and the BBC released a pretty suspicious “no comment” response to the report.
Though we might not want her to go just yet, it seems like Whovians will have to get used to the idea of potentially having a new Doctor in the near future, as The Mirror claims that Whittaker will be regenerating in the season 13 finale. But who could the Fourteenth Doctor be? Obviously, every fan has their own choice, with actors and actresses of all kinds of backgrounds, ages and types being put forward.

Former Curtis Brown CEO Ben Hall has joined Troika as executive chairman, Variety can reveal.
Hall, who stepped down from Curtis Brown and parent company Original Talent Group in April 2019, will operate alongside Troika’s existing leadership, spearheading the agency’s development and growth in the U.K. and U.S. as it becomes further integrated into owners Ymu Group.
