December is the most popular month for charitable giving by Americans – accounting for about a third of all donations made per year. Call it the spirit of the holidays, repeated viewings of A Christmas Carol, or a rush to get in tax-deductible gifts before the calendar year runs out.
That makes this a particularly timely moment to encounter one of this year’s Oscar-contending documentaries, UnCharitable, directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal. It argues we are applying misguided standards to charities – monitoring their overhead expenses like hawks and shaming any nonprofits that dare to spend money on staff salaries or fundraising.
“The movie is demanding that we look at it in a new way, really,” Gyllenhaal said in a recent Q&a (you can watch the conversation below). Under the existing paradigm, charitable nonprofits have learned to operate bare bones style, at the expense of solving the social problems they ostensibly are meant to address.

Jake Gyllenhaal and his onscreen policing partner, Michael Pena, got into character yesterday on the La set of their law enforcement drama End of Watch. Michael and Jake have been working out together getting in shape for their grueling work as officers and Jake even shaved his head for the role. Jake's enjoyed a pretty relaxing Summer and recently returned from a trip to Hawaii where his dad, Stephen Gyllenhaal, married Kathleen Man in a romantic beachside ceremony. Jake G also hit the waves shirtless showing off the fruits of all his hard workouts, which will also serve him well in our annual beach body bracket that kicks off next week. Michael, on the other hand, has been slammed with projects. His latest movie, 30 Minutes or Less, opens August 12 and last week we saw the first trailer of his Fall comedy with Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, Tower Heist. Michael's...

Jake Gyllenhaal dropped by a friend's house outside La yesterday in a perfectly fitted tee. He's back on the West Coast following a quick trip to Hawaii over the weekend. Jake and his sister, Maggie, joined their father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, and Kathleen Man at their Oahu wedding. Jake's brother-in-law, Peter Sarsgaard, missed out on the beach nuptials due to work obligations, since he was around the globe at a Green Lantern premiere with Ryan Reynolds in Germany. Jake's now back to keeping up his strict fitness regime for End of Watch. We got a peek at Jake's ripped muscles recently, when he joined Man vs. Wild host Bear Grylls on a glacier and volcano hiking tour through Iceland. View Slideshow ›...

Jake Gyllenhaal has shown support to his film director father's second wedding. The Prince Dastan of "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" took a break from his busy schedule to witness Stephen Gyllenhaal tying the knot with Kathleen Man on the North Shore of Oahu over the weekend.
Serving as a groomsman, the 30-year-old actor donned loose-fitted khaki trousers and brown shirts. He also sported a shaved head and wore lei around his neck for the informal ceremony attended by about 30 guests. Also present for the fete was the "Source Code" actor's sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, who wore a long floral dress.
Jake's father, Stephen, divorced his wife of 32 years, Naomi Foner, in 2009. He is known for his work in directing 1991's "Paris Trout", which was nominated for five Emmy Awards, and 1998's "Homegrown". According to PopSugar, the 61-year-old worked on film project "Grassroots" along with his new wife Kathleen.

Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister, Maggie, were in Hawaii over the weekend to attend their father Stephen's wedding. They were on the island of Oahu for the nuptials yesterday. The groom wore a white linen top to tie the knot with his bride, Kathleen Man. Kathleen is a filmmaker and professor and has worked on the project Grassroots alongside Stephen. The location was a special one, as Hawaii is Kathleen's home state - she even went to the Punahou School, where President Obama went as a kid! It was three years ago that Stephen split from Jake and Maggie's mom, Naomi Foner. Maggie and Jake went with the islands theme by rocking leis for the ceremony. Jake even served as a groomsman and was spotted making the shaka hand sign for photographers. View Slideshow ›...
