TelevisaUnivision, the Spanish-language media giant, took a different approach to its upfront this year, turning the west side’s Hk Hall into what the company called “Casa Cultura,” a venue that celebrates Latin and Hispanic culture, through food, music, entertainment and more.
The company, led by CEO Wade Davis, leaned on that message in a brief afternoon presentation to advertisers and media buyers (later that evening, the company brought in music star Becky G to lead a performance).
“I wanted to really have our marketers and audience feel it, versus me just kind of standing on stage and showing a video of stuff that we usually do,” TelevisaUnivision ad sales chief Donna Speciale told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “I feel like the interaction between the sports, the music, news or political, what’s going on in our newsrooms, Vix, streaming, the explosion of a streaming, all of that...

The contrast between Donald Trump on Univision last year and Joe Biden on Univision Tuesday was night and day, but the result was still pretty much the same.
Exactly five months after a controversial interview with the 45th President by Enrique Acevedo, the anchor of Televisa’s En punto was broadcast on the Spanish-language network, a sit-down with the 46th Potus aired. However, while the unctuous November 9, 2023 Trump interview at Mar-a-Lago saw the former Celebrity Apprentice host spouting grievances, stolen election conspiracy theories and self-aggrandizement, Biden went nearly full policy wonk tonight.
Including a stroll through the Oval Office discussing the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez, and a clearly scripted aside that the iconic labor leader’s granddaughter Julie Chavez Rodriguez is chairing his reelection campaign, the multi-channel, multi-lingual Biden special may have sought to distinguish itself as always from Trump. However, the truth is tonight’s interview with...

Veteran Univision anchor Jorge Ramos has become the latest prominent member of the Hispanic community to criticize the network for its controversial interview with former President Donald Trump, which has been viewed by some as being too friendly.
Writing in a column Saturday on his website, Ramos said Trump’s Nov. 9 sit-down with veteran journalist Enrique Acevedo “put in doubt the independence of our news department, and created discomfort and uncertainty within the newsroom.”
“We cannot normalize behavior that threatens democracy and the Hispanic community, or offer Trump an open microphone to broadcast his falsehoods and conspiracy theories,” Ramos added. “We must question and fact-check everything he says and does. That’s why it is very dangerous to fail to confront Trump. And that’s why it is our moral obligation to confront him every time there’s a journalistic opportunity to do it. Univision anchor Jorge Ramos doesn’t like the way his network handled an interview with former President Donad Trump.
Ramos criticized the network in a column published Saturday, saying that journalists must continue to question those in power. Ramos is a long-time Trump critic, and his remarks were aimed at a Hispanic audience that some feel may be growing more disillusioned with Democrat policies and may swing what is expected to be another tight presidential election in 2024.
“That’s why it is very dangerous to fail to confront Trump. And that’s why it is our moral obligation to confront him every time there’s a journalistic opportunity to do it. But I understand that not everyone agrees, and I open the debate here,” Ramos said.
“I believe we must question and confront Trump for democracy, for the rights of immigrants and, simply, for good journalism,” he wrote.

Jorge Ramos, the Univision star anchor who has become as defined by his clashes with the Trump administration as he has by his coverage of major world events, has become the latest of the Spanish-language network’s top anchors to take issue with an interview broadcast by the news division earlier this month with the former President.
The November 9 interview with Trump, Ramos said in the newest edition of his weekly column, “put in doubt the independence of our news department, and created discomfort and uncertainty within the newsroom.” Univision has for years burnished a reputation for holding top U.S. politicians to account — Trump particularly, following remarks made at the beginning of his campaign for the 2016 election in which he said immigrants from Mexico were drug dealers, criminals and rapists.
TelevisaUnivision, the network’s parent. says its portfolio of media assets “reaches over 60% of the respective TV audiences in both the U.

The CEO of TelevisionUnivision defended the network’s recent interview with Donald Trump, amid criticism from Democratic lawmakers and others that the influential Hispanic outlet was giving a softball platform for the former president.
Wade Davis wrote in a memo to U.S.. staffers today that “interviewing the current Republican frontrunner, according to the polls, the sitting President, and any other candidates is our responsibility if we are to present the full landscape of ideas. The interview with former President Trump was the first in 22 years of a current or former Republican President. There have been many interviews of a current or former Democratic President over that same period. The top executive of Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision defended the company’s recent decision to interview former President Donald Trump in a non-confrontational manner and suggested the media conglomerate was shifting some of its long-held political attitudes.
“We made a decision to adopt a strategy that is different than what some other major networks are using, which has been labeled as partisan,” said Wade Davis, CEO of the company and one of its financial architects, in a statement. Davis, a former Viacom CFO, purchased a majority stake in Univision in 2020, then merged it with Mexican TV provider Televisa in 2022. “Univision’s news strategy is one that is non-partisan and objective, and we serve our audience by being welcoming of competing issues, ideas, candidates and parties. In a break from the norm of this year’s upfronts week, TelevisaUnivision’s presentation Tuesday morning at Pier 36 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan had no picketing writers outside; no protesters; and no dramatic executive or talent departures.
It was perhaps the only upfront of the week to be business as usual, with the WGA strike not impacting the company (which produces most of its Spanish-language programming in Mexico and Colombia), and a lack of corporate drama and intrigue.
In its place was a show of confidence, as executives touted a theme of “Young America,” noting that with the demographic changes in the country, much of that growth will come from Hispanics.
“We will be 100 percent of the 18 to 34 year old growth over the next five years, that’s what clients are leaning into,” TelevisaUnivision ad sales chief Donna Speciale told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview ahead of its upfront presentation.

A Los Angeles broadcasting pioneer is set to reach its 60th on-air anniversary this week, a milestone sparked by technological innovation in an earlier era of television. And it comes as Univision’s Kmex-tv and other local TV stations are under increasing pressure to reinvent themselves for a new era that brings new expectations from its core audience.
Kmex-tv, now known as Univision Los Angeles and owned by TelevisaUnivision, signed on the air as channel 34 at 3 p.m. Pt on Saturday, Sept. 29, 1962, becoming the first Spanish-language TV station to serve the region. Univision Los Angeles will commemorate its diamond anniversary Sunday with a festival in downtown L.A.’s Olvera Street district. The station will also air four 30-minute documentaries on its history.

Al Roker is taking working from home in stride. On Tuesday, the “Today” host did the weather report live from his kitchen. It was his second day staying home from the morning show due to coronavirus concerns.
“I didn’t have to commute in, so I did sleep in,” Roker said, explaining there were no NBC News crews present at his home to minimize exposure. Rather, he was using an iPad to stream himself and a small television screen to show the relevant maps.
“We’ve kind of jerry-rigged the system and I’ve got all my graphics and everything I need,” Roker declared before sitting down and getting to the weather.

Sunday’s Democratic debate, hosted by CNN, will get a new moderator and location amid the coronavirus pandemic, the DNC said in a statement.
Univision’s Jorge Ramos will not moderate the debate after it was discovered he had been in “proximity” with “someone who was in direct contact with a person that tested positive for coronavirus,” the DNC said.
Though Ramos was cleared by medical professionals, he is stepping back from his moderating duties “out of an abundance of caution.” Univision’s Ilia Calderón will replace Ramos as a moderator.
The debate will also move from its planned location in Phoenix to CNN’s studio in D.C. without a live audience, the DNC said, “out of an abundance of caution and in order to reduce cross-country travel.”

Univision’s Jorge Ramos has backed out of his planned role as one of the moderators of Sunday’s Democratic presidential debate because of possible exposure to the coronavirus, and the event itself has been moved from Phoenix to CNN’s studios in Washington, D.C., the network said on Thursday.

Debates among Democratic presidential hopefuls in this recent cycle have been raucous, knock-down drag-em-outs. The next one is likely to be a more staid affair.
CNN will move its planned coverage of the next Democratic debate to a studio in Washington D.C from a hall in Arizona, a nod to concerns about the growing spread of coronavirus. Meanwhile, one of the journalists scheduled to moderate the event, Univision journalist Jorge Ramos, will bow out, citing medical concerns.

The next Democratic debate, the first match up solely of Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, also will be different in that it will lack a live audience.
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer announced that the event, scheduled for Sunday in Phoenix, will no longer include a crowd of spectators. He said that at the request of both campaigns, they scrapped plans for an audience. The format originally included plans for the candidates to take questions from the crowd.
CNN also said that they will not have a press filing center or a spin room, which are typically big parts of the set up for debate events.
The event will take place at the Arizona Federal Theatre, with Jake Tapper, Dana Bash and Univision’s Jorge Ramos as moderators. CNN and Univision are cohosts of the event, which is sanctioned by the Democratic National Committee and Chc Bold, the political action committee of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

When CNN and Univision host the next Democratic presidential debate, it is likely to be a matchup of the two last remaining major candidates, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
That’s because the Democratic National Committee on Friday released new qualification criteria for the next debate, set for March 15 in Phoenix. It requires that participants have at least 20% of all of the pledged delegates awarded from primaries and caucuses up to that point.
Tulsi Gabbard, the only other candidate remaining in the race, does not meet that criteria. She so far has only two delegates from American Samoa, which held its caucuses Tuesday.

A radiant documentary with the power to send Latinos into a frenzy of uplifting nostalgia, Argentine-American filmmaker Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch’s “Mucho Mucho Amor” thoroughly and lovingly eulogizes revered Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado, in a film that mixes celebrity cameos and heart-to-heart chats with the late icon himself.
One of the few true pan-Latino figures, ageless Mercado reached millions of households across the United States, as well as throughout Latin America (including Portuguese-speaking Brazil), and even Europe for decades on TV, radio, and print media.
Entire families hung on his every word and shushed one another to hear what he had to say about their respective futures. For those of us who interacted with his image every day, during his long stint on Univision’s “Primer Impacto” or his solo show, that’s a shared memory that evokes the comfort of familiarity. Democratic Debate #3 Viewership On ABC & Univision Hits 14M Viewers In Biden-Warren Matchup – Update
Updated, 11:48 Am: The candidates will be back onstage next month in a debate hosted by CNN and the New York Times, but now we know how Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and the rest did last night on ABC and Univision.
Coming in strong in early metrics, the three-hour primetime Democratic scrimmage drew 14 million viewers in total. That’s about 12.9 million on the Disney-owned net and 1.1 million on the Spanish-speaking outlet.
While up from the last debate between Democratic heavyweights on CNN looking to see Donald Trump fired next November, Thursday’s gathering was down 23% from the viewership that the Biden-led second night of the first Dems debates had June 27 on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo.

Last night, Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Elizabeth Warren finally stood next to each other on the debate stage, after being separated during the multiple previous Democratic debates so far.
ABC’s debate, which featured fewer candidates, fewer sounds bite moments of disagreement and a couple of protester interruptions, was watched by an average of 14 million viewers across both ABC and Univision and scored a 10.0 household metered market rating. That represents a 23% bump in rating on the second NBC debate on June 27, but also a 23% decrease on the record-breaking 18.1 million viewers who tuned in to NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo.

Much has been made of the fact that the Democrats’ third presidential debate will only be one night, as just 10 candidates qualified from a much larger field of contenders.
That will make the Houston event different in its dynamics, but the challenge for producers remain the same: It’s still a large number of people sharing a debate stage. Viewers will have an easier time in comparing the field of top contenders, but there will be much focus on whether the event produces the kind of compelling moments that changes the direction of the race.
One industry vet said that a problem with the first two debates was that NBC News and CNN were so concerned with time constraints that they had the feel of speed dating, leaving little room for context before moving on to the next candidate or topic.
“Each debate brings everything into sharper focus as the field narrows.

As the Democratic field of White House wannabes starts to shrink, so too do opportunities for TV-news outlets to showcase them in clashes with each other.
ABC News said Thursday it would televise just one night of debates among Democratic hopefuls for 2020, as opposed to the two nights it had previously planned. ABC’s September 12th coverage will feature ten candidates, reflecting the fact that a good chunk of those campaigning for the job had failed to reach the next level of support to participate in the event, organized by the Democratic National Committee.
The event will also be televised by Spanish-language broadcaster Univision. The two networks will telecast the event between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. eastern from Texas Southern University.
George Stephanopoulos, David Muir, and Linsey Davis from ABC News and and Jorge Ramos from Univision will moderate the debate, which is slated to include former Vice President Joe Biden,...
