The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is officially returning for a second season after breaking viewership records with its premiere season in 2022. The series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, nearly 5,000 years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. The series delves into the forging of the rings of power, including Sauron's One Ring, which will decide the fate of Middle-earth.
The first season of The Rings of Power was heavily controversial among The Lord of the Rings fans for changes made to J.R.R. Tolkien's original work and ignoring Peter Jackson's beloved film adaptation. Even so, The Rings of Power sets up an intriguing storyline for its second season that may ultimately win fans over. What is there to know about the upcoming season and when should fans expect to see it premiere on Prime Video?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power director Charlotte Brändström, cinematographer Alex Disenhof and VFX producer Ron Ames just unpacked Mordor's fiery origin sequence in the Prime Video show's first season.
The trio broke down the climatic moment when Mount Doom erupts in Season 1, Episode 6, "Udûn," during an interview with Variety. "There was this key that we had been teasing throughout Season 1, this broken sword," Disenhof said. "By putting it in this stone and turning, it would essentially unlock the dams that would then allow the water to flow underground into these tunnels… under the village all the way to the mountain, hitting the magma lava and causing the explosion, which is loosely based on real science and how it would cause something like that." Ames echoed Disenhof's comments, insisting that the crew leaned heavily on "true physics" when crafting the sequence.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 will feature a battle that unfolds across two episodes, if a new rumor is to be believed.
The rumor comes via Fellowship of Fans, an outlet with a proven track record when it comes to The Rings of Power scoops. It claims that the Prime Video fantasy series' second season will include an extended clash between the Elves of Eregion and Orc forces commanded by Adar (Sam Hazeldine). The rumor further alleges that Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) will both take part in the two-episode battle, with the pair potentially going toe-to-toe with Adar himself during the fighting. That said, as Amazon Studios is yet to officially confirm that The Rings of Power Season 2 contains an action set piece split across more than one episode, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt for now.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 catches a lucky break after a series of setbacks, avoiding significant delay due to the looming actors' strike. Based on the beloved novels by author J.R.R. Tolkien, Prime Video's expansive (and expensive) fantasy series from creators J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay premiered on the streamer last summer to generally positive reviews from critics but a more mixed response from audiences. Season 2 of the show entered into production last year and has since suffered through an on-set fire, a horse fatality, and the ongoing WGA strike.
Now, as the SAG-AFTRA strike appears imminent, Variety reports that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 won't be affected. The show, according to the report, wrapped filming several weeks ago, meaning it's seemingly in the clear and will not be delayed.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has cast an ex-Game of Thrones star, months after another big GoT name dropped out.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power recently added more than a dozen actors to its cast ahead of the upcoming second season. The new cast members’ characters were not revealed, with the exception of Sam Hazeldine, who was confirmed to be replacing Season 1 star Joseph Mawle as the villain Adar. While recasts are almost always noticeable, this one is ideally timed to be as unobtrusive as possible. Some major plot twists from the end of Season 1 suggest that Adar’s story will be radically different going forward so the character having a new face might not be as distracting as it would be otherwise.

The Rings of Power has recast Adar, a mysterious central villain of season 1, raising questions about whether he can change form to reflect his new appearance. Shape-shifting magic plays a big role in Tolkien's Middle-earth but is ordinarily reserved for beings more powerful than Adar, forcing the series to come up with an explanation for the recasting that makes sense for the corrupt elf. His altered appearance may be a large factor in his arc for season 2, especially since every other actor from season 1 remains in their respective role.
Adar actor Joseph Mawle made a heartfelt recast explanation as he passed the torch to British actor Sam Hazeldine, who resembles Mawle just enough to make the change believable, but not without concern. There remain enough physical differences between the two actors that Amazon will need to address them in the next season, particularly as Sauron's War threatens the rest of Middle-earth.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power quickly became Amazon Prime's top-performing show. The series delves into J.R.R Tolkien's Middle-earth lore, set in the world's Second Age, long before the more recognizable story of The Lord of the Rings. With season one wrapping up in October, season two is already in the works, though little is known about it at this point in time. The release date is unconfirmed, but the show announced that Sam Hazeldine will take over as Adar in the upcoming season. They also announced 14 new cast members but have not confirmed what characters they will be. But that's not the most recent piece of news. Since then, the streaming service has released its directorial team for The Rings of Power Season 2. Charlotte Brändström will be taking the helm with the assistance of Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper. Notably, this season will feature an all-female directing team.

Rings of Power season 2 recast news is a bad sign for Adar's future. Adar is set up as a mysterious antagonist through season 1, whose ambitions and story establish him as a morally gray character. In the First Age, Adar was one of the first elves to be captured by Morgoth, leading him to become one of the first orcs ever created. At the beginning of the Rings of Powers, Adar can be seen leading an army of surviving orcs who follow him willingly. Later, viewers learn that Adar used to serve Sauron in the First Age but soon turned on him due to Sauron's cruel behavior towards the orcs.
With the recent news, Adar's recast may suggest that the villain has a reduced role in season 2. Given his importance in Rings of Power season 1 and his role as an untraditional Tolkien villain, it is unlikely that Adar will disappear entirely in the next season.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power started setting records before a frame of it had been released when word came out of New Zealand last year that its eight-episode first season cost a record 465 million to produce (not factoring in tax rebates and start-up costs amortization.)
In an interview with Deadline, Vernon Sanders, Head of Global TV for Amazon Studios, says the financial bet “has more than paid off.” He addresses the success of the show on Prime Video — where it broke records for most global viewers in its first day (25 million) and overall (more than 100 million), for minutes streamed (24 billion) and signups worldwide during its launch window, attracted younger viewers (record number of adults 18-34 for a Prime Video original) and affluent audiences — and beyond, boosting Amazon’s sales of J.R.R. Tolkien books on which the series was based.

In recent weeks Amazon has released a flurry of casting news for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season two. We have names of 15 actors who will join the Middle Earth cast: Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, Nicholas Woodeson, Sam Hazeldine, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Stuart Bowman, Gavi Singh Chera, William Chubb, Kevin Eldon, Will Keen, Selina Lo, and Calam Lynch. But details about their roles are scarce.
The only specific character information that accompanied the casting updates was the shocking news that Hazeldine (“Peaky Blinders”) will be taking over the role of orc-daddy Adar from Joseph Mawle. With showrunner Patrick McKay previously teasing elder elf (and ring bearer) Cirdan the Shipwright arriving next season, that still leaves 13 new roles shrouded in mystery.
Given the plot trajectory of season one and a hefty knowledge of J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore, here are the five...

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Joseph Mawle offers a heartfelt explanation as to why Adar has been recast for season 2. Based on author J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novels, Prime Video's latest venture into the fantasy genre premiered in September, earning mostly positive reviews from critics. The Rings of Power takes place thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson's acclaimed The Lord of the Rings trilogy, chronicling the rise of evil in Middle-earth. Mawle's Adar plays a prominent role in season 1, commanding a small army of Orcs and facing off against Morfydd Clark's Galadriel.
After it was announced recently that The Rings of Power will recast Adar for season 2, in addition to adding a number of other new cast members, Mawle has now taken to Twitter to offer an explanation to fans as to why he will not be returning. While the actor doesn't go into specifics,...

When Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel, The Rings of Power, returns for season two, it will do so with one of the major villain roles recast. Joseph Mawle, who played the Orc leader Adar, will not be returning, with Peaky Blinders’ star Sam Hazeldine replacing him in the role. No reason was given by Prime Video, who announced the change this morning along with a string of new castings.
This is a shame, as Mawle was definitely a highlight of the show, with him oozing menace as the main Orc villain. While the role may be less prominent in future seasons, it’s always problematic recasting an actor, as seen recently when the internet erupted in a furor over Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill on The Witcher from Season 4 onwards. While Mawle was hardly the show’s star, his absence will be felt but fans, I’m sure.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 has recast a major character and adds six other actors to its already massive ensemble. In 2017, Amazon purchased the television rights to Lord of the Rings and made a five-season commitment to Rings of Power worth at least 1 billion, making it the most expensive television series ever made. Set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, Rings of Power premiered September 1 on Prime Video, and before the season 1 finale had aired, season 2 had already begun filming in early October.
Now, the first casting update for Rings of Power season 2 is here directly from Amazon. Seven new actors have joined the show's massive international cast, including one surprising recasting. Game of Thrones alum Joseph Mawle, who played the Orc leader Adar, will be replaced by Sam Hazeldine (Peaky Blinders) for season 2. Other additions, whose roles are unknown, are Gabriel Akuwudike (Hanna), Yasen...

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is saying goodbye to one of its most popular actors.
Joseph Mawle -- who played Adar, the leader of the Orcs -- is departing ahead of Season 2.
The role has been recast, with Peaky Blinders alum Sam Hazeldine taking over the role.
No reason has been given for the departure, but it is a huge blow to the series.
Mawle earned much praise for his portrayal of Adar, and there will undoubtedly be a lot of questions about how the character will fit into future storylines.
Amazon has also revealed that there will be even more new faces on the sprawling drama's second season.
Gabriel Akuwudike (Ridley Road), Yasen “Zates” Atour (The Witcher), Ben Daniels (The Crown), newcomer Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle (Persuasion), and Nicholas Woodeson (Rome)

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has recast a character for season two.
In September, the first season of the series based on the work of Jrr Tolkien was released on Prime Video.
However, one new character created for the show that made an impression on viewers was Adar.
Adar, played by Joseph Mawle, was introduced as the leader of the orcs in the third episode.
He took centre stage as the series progressed, and by the end of the season, becomes “king of the Southlands” before changing the location’s name to Mordor, a reveal that was criticised by fans.
While the series will bring Adar back for more in season two, it’s been revealed that Mawle will no longer play him.
In a casting notice shared by Amazon on Thursday (1 December), Sam Hazeldine was announced as Mawles’ replacement, although no reason was given.

Sam Hazeldine takes on the role of Orc leader Adar in a recasting in the Prime Video series. He replaces Joseph Mawle, who portrayed the character in Season 1. The recasting decision was made months ago, and Mawle did not participate in any of the worldwide promotional events for the series.
Additional new cast members are Gabriel Akuwudike (Hanna), Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour (The Witcher), Ben Daniels (Jupiter’s Legacy), newcomer Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle (Persuasion), and Nicholas Woodeson (Silent Witness). Character details are being kept under wraps.
Developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, The Lord of the Rings series is described as an “epic drama” set in the Second Age of Middle-earth — thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings films and the novels by Tolkien.

Get ready to fire up those fan theories and a whole lot of reckless speculation, Tolkien nerds! The first season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" successfully drew a whole new audience of diehards and casual fans alike to this refreshingly new story set in the wilds of Middle-earth and beyond, taking place thousands of years before the events told in J.R.R. Tolkien's novels and Peter Jackson's trilogy adaptation. Along the way, the Prime Video series propped up a number of season-long mysteries and kept viewers guessing along with the characters themselves about some of the big mystery-box reveals to come: Namely, who the heck was actually Sauron in disguise and whether that mysterious Stranger was, in fact, Gandalf himself.
By the end of the season, all those questions were answered ... but with such a big ensemble cast to follow and so much secrecy...
