If you were entertained by Russell Crowe in a cassock (and tootling around on a Lambretta) as Father Gabriele Amorth in last year's The Pope's Exorcist (and its $76.9 million box office off the back of an $18 million budget suggests plenty of you were), you'll no doubt be happy to hear that, according to producer Jeff Katz, Crowe will be battling demonic forces once more in a sequel.
Katz hit social media to announce that he'd gotten word of the sequel decision.
The Pope's Exorcist, which was directed by Julius Avery, finds Crowe as the real-life Italian priest who performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. His latest mission took him on a tricky quest to help a possessed American boy and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.
The end of the film teed up sequels, but there's no word yet on what case the new movie will feature.

It’s been one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but then things went quiet for a while. Crowe recently said that The Pope’s Exorcist was meant to kick off a trilogy, but the franchise’s progress had been slowed down by “a change of studio heads.” Things have apparently been worked out, though, because producer Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz has just taken to social media to announce that the Pope’s Exorcist sequel has been given the greenlight!
Katz wrote, “Amorth Nation — I just got the call. It’S Officially Happening!!! “È un seguito, amici miei.”* Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride.

Russell Crowe will save souls and ride Lambrettas again: "The Pope's Exorcist" is officially getting a sequel! Producer Jeff Katz took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to announce the news, posting, "Amorth Nation -- I just got the call...It's Officially Happening!!!" Katz followed up with an Italian phrase, "È un seguito, amici miei," which translates to "It's a sequel, my friends."
Never one to miss a chance to reference Crowe's character's motorized scooter (aren't we all?), Katz also wrote, "Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta - and get ready to ride."
"The Pope's Exorcist" was both a slightly campy novelty and a surprise box office success when it dropped in April 2023, earning nearly $77 million worldwide against a comparatively slim budget of just $18 million (per Variety). The film blew past initial expectations -- the Variety article cited above guessed it would earn $10 million in U.

It may not seem like it but The Pope’s Exorcist was a hit at the box office last year, scaring up $76.9 million on a production budget of just $18 million. Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Gabriele Amorth in the horror film, and it didn’t take long for Screen Gems to start thinking about a sequel. It seems it’s now actually happening.
The Pope’s Exorcist producer Jeff Katz took to Twitter last night to officially announce The Pope’s Exorcist 2, tweeting: “Amorth Nation — I just got the call. It’s officially happening!”
Katz added in last night’s tweet, “Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride.”
According to a recent interview with Russell Crowe, a trilogy had originally been planned at Screen Gems, which could end up happening if the sequel performs as well as the first film.

It looks like Russell Crowe cannot leave behind the horror and mystery genres so soon. According to an official update from The Pope’s Exorcist’s producer, Jeff Katz, the 2023 film will receive a sequel soon. The horror film was a sleeper hit at the box office and, despite not being perfect, was liked by many.
Russell Crowe in The Pope’s Exorcist
The Pope’s Exorcist mostly earned mixed reviews from critics. However, it seems like the makers want to mimic the first film’s unexpected success. Earlier this year, Russell Crowe discussed the possibility of numerous follow-ups to the Julius Avery directorial. Jeff Katz has now confirmed that the universe will expand and follow the blueprint of the Planet of the Apes franchise for its title.

Ronny Yu's 2003 horror/action flick "Freddy vs. Jason" gave audiences pretty much everything they might want in a sensationalized cross-over between "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Friday the 13th." In addition to the requisite cast of pretty young people getting chopped into pieces by one of the film's two title villains, it featured every iteration of fight between Freddy and Jason. There was a fight in the dream world (where Freddy had the upper hand) and a fight at a real-world campground (where Jason did). There was a lot of growling, cutting, slashing, etc. Whichever villain was your favorite, you saw what you wanted to see.
At the end, the actual victor was left a little ambiguous. It seemed for a moment that Jason (Ken Kirzinger) was the winner, as he emerged from Crystal Lake, post-conflagration, holding the severed head of Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Freddy, however, still possessed of his supernatural powers,...

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has already topped $1.2 billion worldwide and should end its theatrical run with around $1.3 billion global, the second-biggest animated film ever behind “Frozen II,” which pulled in $1.45 billion in 2019. Alongside its massive $535 million-and-counting domestic total, the next biggest market for “Super Mario” is not China or the U.K. but rather Japan, where it has earned $60 million thus far.
That is one of the biggest cumulative totals in the post-covid era for a Hollywood film in Japan, between the $46 million earned by “Jurassic World Dominion” and the $101 million earned by “Top Gun: Maverick.” The latter ranks 11th among all-time Hollywood earners in Japan. In terms of video game-based movies, the Chris Pratt/Anya Taylor-Joy/Jack Black fantasy is already over double the $27 million Japanese gross of “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” in 2019, and just above the $48 million Japanese total of “Resident Evil: Retribution” in 2012 and the $55 million Japanese...

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist, the brand new horror movie from director Julius Avery (Overlord). The Screen Gems horror movie has thus far scared up $52 million worldwide, and Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report that a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist is now in early development.
Bloody Disgusting’s sources indicate that development is underway on The Pope’s Exorcist 2, but we don’t have any further details at this time. We do expect Crowe to return.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
The smart thing about The Pope’s Exorcist is that the production budget was quite low, reportedly just $18 million. This set the horror movie up for success, allowing it to become profitable in theaters after just one week of release. The same can’t be said about Universal’s Renfield, which reportedly cost $65 million and has thus far made just $17.9 million.

It is hard to look at any movie with “Exorcist” in its title and not immediately think of William Friedkin’s eternal 1973 Oscar-winning horror classic that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Nevertheless there have been dozens of films of various stripes that have tried to conjure their own magic in this sub-genre, but none that have managed to surpass what Friedkin and screenwriter William Peter Blatty did with that brilliant film.
Now though, with a bit of a twist we have a new entry, The Pope’s Exorcist, which is hoping to lure audiences with the promise of the story of an actual exorcist — and not just any run-of-the-mill demon slayer but rather Father Gabriele Amorth, who for 36 years plied his trade at the Vatican, rising to chief exorcist there in 1992 until his death in 2016. Viewers may recognize Ralph Ineson from his on screen roles in such films and TV shows as The Witch, Willow, Chernobyl, and Game of Thrones, among others – and if you’ve seen Ineson in action, you’ve probably also noticed that he has an awesome voice, which is why several credits on his résumé are voiceover roles. So it’s not surprising to hear (from our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Ineson has been hired to provide the voice of a demon for the supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist, starring Russell Crowe.

The track was recorded at Sunset Sound, Studio 3 on November 15th, 1986, and although a snippet of the recording has been passed among collectors for years, the whole song had yet to surface until now. The track finds Prince riding a thumping rock beat, tossing out all sorts of guitar heroics and harmonics, and delivering a mesmerizing vocal performance in his pitched-up “Camiille” voice.

It seems Sony and Screen Gems are looking to piggyback on the meteoric success of New Line’s Conjuring film franchise and its many spooky spinoffs.
According to Deadline, the studios have landed the exclusive life rights of Father Gabriele Amorth, a renown Italian priest who is said to have performed tens of thousands of exorcisms in his lifetime on behalf of the Vatican. Tapping inspiration from his two best-selling memoirs, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, the inevitable feature film will likely employ the tried-and-tested “based on real events” before playing in theaters, which worked wonders for the likes of The Amityville Horror, The Haunting in Connecticut and The Conjuring.

Exclusive: Sony Screen Gems has acquired the exclusive life rights of Father Gabriele Amorth, the legendary Italian priest who performed tens of thousands of exorcisms for the Vatican.
Also part of the deal is rights to his two international bestselling memoirs An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories. Father Amorth, who died in 2016, left behind a trove of detailed accounts of his exploits pulling the devil out of people all over the world. These thrillers work best when they are based on real stories, as evidenced by The Amityville Horror, The Haunting in Connecticut and The Conjuring and its hit spinoffs that are based on the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Michael Patrick Kaczmarek — who worked for years to acquire Amorth’s life rights, personal writings and case files from the priest’s Italian publisher — will produce.

Girls in Prison, Viking Women and The Sea Serpent, The Brain Eaters, The She-Creature, Teenage Caveman, Reform School Girl, The Undead, War of the Colossal Beast, The Cool and The Crazy, and Day the World Ended will all be reimagined, with filming slated to start...
