Matteo Garrone’s Oscar-nominated drama “Io Capitano,” about the odyssey of two young African men who decide to leave Dakar to reach Europe, and Paola Cortellesi’s feminist dramedy “There’s Still Tomorrow” were both the big winners at Italy’s 69th David di Donatello Awards.
“Io Capitano” won Davids for best picture, director, producers, editor, and cinematographer, among other prizes, while “Still Tomorrow,” which is about the plight of an abused housewife in post-war Rome and had 19 nominations scored six statuettes, including best directorial debut, actress, non supporting actress, screenplay, and audience award.
“Still Tomorrow,” which marks the directorial debut of popular Italian actor Paola Cortellesi, who also stars, is shot in black-and-white and riffs on Italy’s neorealist past, albeit with a contemporary female empowerment angle.
“I made this debut at the brink of menopause,” Cortellesi, who is 50, said while accepting the statuette for best debuting director. “I hope...

Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Palme d’Or-winning director Bille August’s prestige limited series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which also stars Sam Claflin.
A sprawling adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, the English-language series is produced by Mediawan’s banner Palomar, the leading Italian company behind “That Dirty Black Bag” and “The Name of the Rose,” in collaboration with another Mediawan label, France’s Demd Productions. The series’ five-month shoot will wrap in Malta in December, after having lensed in France and Italy.
The show underscores Mediawan’s strategy to pursue prestige scripted projects with strong international potential under its €100 million co-investment agreement signed earlier this year with private equity film Entourage Ventures.

The Venice Film Festival closed its 75th year Sept. 8, and already the industry is abuzz with predictions of awards to come. The stalwart film festival, this year hosted by Italian actor Michele Riondino, has welcomed the biggest and brightest of the film business to Lido ever since 1932. The coveted Golden Lion award went to director Alfonso Cuarón for his newest project, “Roma.” Cuarón’s connections to the Venice Film Festival run deep; his last feature film, “Gravity,” opened at the fest in 2013, and he went on to win the Oscar for best director. Sleepytime Drama: Bellocchio Messy Message Movie
After yet another career peak with his 2009 film Vincere, Italian auteur Marco Bellocchio continues his examination of Italian society with Dormant Beauty, a treatise on Italy’s hot button issue of euthanasia. Bellocchio managed to score one of the cinema’s most talented actresses ever to appear on screen when he signed French actress Isabelle Huppert (no stranger to Italian cinema (see a 1996 Goethe adaptation, Elective Affinities from Vittorio and Paolo Taviani), so it’s so unfortunate that this latest endeavor is so unconvincing in all regards.

Her father, Beppe Englaro, had decided to take his daughter off of life support after she’d been in a coma for 17 years, which divided the country concerning...

Always a favorite of ours, French actress Isabelle Huppert has taken things to the next level this year, juggling a handful of arthouse/festival flicks from filmmakers such as Hong Sang-Soo, Brilliante Mendoza and Michael Haneke, with upcoming roles in more mainstream efforts such as that in "Dead Man Down" opposite Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace, David Gordon Green's upcoming "Suspiria" remake, and two-parter "The Disappearnce Of Eleanor Rigby" with Jessica Chastain. Falling under the first category of Huppert's recent choices is the actress' teaming with Italian helmer Marco Bellocchio ("Vincere," "Fists In The Pocket") on "Dormant Beauty," which now has a teaser trailer on the eve of its appearance at the Lido later this month. The film also stars Toni Servillo ("Il Divo"), Alba Rohwacher ("I Am Love"), Michele Riondino and Pier Giorgio Bellocchio, and is inspired by the...

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. One of the biggest surprises is a new film from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwing titled Frances Ha. There’s also The Avengers director Joss Whedon...

Is there anyone whose worked with a more diverse range of helmers in recent times than Isabelle Huppert? Probably not. Brilliante Mendoze, Hong Sang-soo, David O. Russell, Michael Haneke, Joachim Lafosse, Oliver Assayas, Raul Ruiz, Anna Fontaine and Claire Denis are just some the folk she's teamed with over the last decade or so, and only this morning she added David Gordon Green to the list, signing on to his remake of "Suspiria." And hot on its heels, another European helmer is now added to the list, in the shape of "Vincere" director Marco Bellocchio.
The duo will unite for "Dormant Beauty," a film inspired by the controversial true story of a woman named Eluana Englaro who died in 2009 after living in a vegetative state for 17 years, which sparked major debate on euthanasia in Italy. In actuality, though, Bellocchio's tale follows an over-the-hill actress (Huppert) caring in her home for her beautiful daughter,...

Until women reach a 50-50 parity with men directors, my mission continues to count the women directors in upcoming and recent film festivals (and an occasional informal glance at what’s selling in the markets). Women’s films in Berlin reflect women’s place in the world both in content and in the numbers of women represented as directors, producers, writers, etc. John Cooper of Sundance stresses the increasing and possibly 50-50 parity of women producers, but I am looking at the directors. As March is Women’s History Month (and all the other months are Men’s History Month according to Gloria Steinem’s L.A. Times Article of March 4, 2010) this blog is in honor of all women everywhere.

Cologne, Germany -- For this first time since its launch in 1997, next year's Shooting Stars event will not include an actor from either Germany, France or Spain.
The Shooting Stars jury on Wednesday announced the 10 young acting talents that will take part in the event, which runs Feb. 13-15 during the Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 11-21, 2010).
And, with the exception of British actor Edward Hogg ("White Lightnin") and Italy's Michele Riondino ("The Past is a Foreign Land") all of the talents come from smaller European countries.
Central and Eastern Europe is well represented, with four Shooting Stars including Poland's Agata Buzek ("Within the Whirlwind"), Czech actor Krystof Hadadek ("Three Seasons in Hell"), Romanian actor Dragos Bucur ("The Way Back) and Croatia's Zrinka Cvitesic, who stars in "Nat putu" the new film from Golden Bear winner Jasmila Zbanic ("Esma's Secret -- Grbavica") which is widely expected to compete in Berlin next year.
