In the web series world, shows written by and starring black people are a rare but growing segment of the market. Within the sub-genre, there are surprising number of shows starring black women, a real divergence from television and film. The most well-known, Buppies, did some decent business for both Bet and its sponsor CoverGirl, and a number of series in a variety of genres have attracted smaller audiences including Chick, Blue Belle, Kindred, Whoopi Goldberg’s Stream and Robert Townsend’s popular Diary of a Single Mom which just entered its third season on Pic.TV. Debuting on Koldcast this summer and now finishing up its run, Celeste Bright, from TV writer Sonya Steele, furthers this mission of giving better roles and more complexity to black women on screen. Celeste Bright follows the story of a banker of the same name, who becomes embroiled in a financial scandal involving...

Ryan Michelle Bathe, whom you should all know from Sonya Steele’s Celeste Bright web series, which we’ve been featuring on this site, is officially part of an ensemble cast for an upcoming new TV series titled Retired at 35 for the TV Land network.
George Segal and Johnathan McClain star in the sitcom that centers on a successful young businessman (McClain) who moves into his father’s Florida retirement home, after saying goodbye to the competitive struggles of New York City.
Also co-starring on the show, in addition to Bathe, are names I don’t immediately recognize, like Casey Wilson, Christine Ebersole, Jessica Walter, Josh McDermitt, and a few others.
In addition to the pilot, 9 episodes of the series have been ordered by the network, with an early 2011 debut expected, in glorious prime-time hours!
Not sure what Bathe’s role will be. We’ll find out soon enough,...

As Tambay mentioned in his Emmy post last week, it seems that webseries are the way forward when it comes to showcasing black talent. We’ve mentioned the web series Celeste Bright a few times here on the site, and finally the show is up and running. Created and written by a regular S&A reader Sonya Steele, it stars Ryan Michelle Bathe, and is co-directed by Joe Doughrity and Gregory Storm.
Hopefully the pace picks up considerably in subsequent episodes, but the mystery about our titular charcter certainly begins here in episode one, Person of Interst…...

Actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, who you’d recognize from TV shows like Trauma, Boston Legal, and Girlfriends, attended the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, which ended just last weekend, and she agreed to provide us with a summary of her experiences there.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention that she’ll be starring in an upcoming intriguing web series created by Sonya Steele, titled Celeste Bright, which we’ve already profiled on this blog (read about it Here & Here).
I received Ms Bathe’s festival write-up earlier today, and included it all below for you to read. So, here you go. Thanks Ryan for the report! And if you’ll be going to the Venice Film Festival, or the Toronto Film Festival, both later this year, do let us know :
So Cannes, or the South of France, or the Cote de Azur or the French Riviera. Word!

If you want to keep up to date with the latest happenings at the Cannes Film Festival, which officially started today, then go to their official website right Here. On the site you can see videos of premieres, photo calls (where the actors and filmmakers of movies in the festival stand around to get blinded by the flash of 10,000 paparazzi), the opening and closing night ceremonies, press conferences, interviews, articles and a host of other stuff. It’s not the most user friendly website (though it’s a lot better than it used to be), but if you fool around with it you can figure it out.
I did receive an e-mail today from actress Ryan Michelle Bathe of the network series Trauma and the web series Celeste Bright produced by devoted S & A reader Sonya Steele which we bought to your attention Here. Ryan is right now at Cannes...

Due to arrive on a computer/smart-phone screen near you this June, Celeste Bright, a new web series written and produced by regular S&A reader Sonya Steele, this trailer looks more like it’s for a gritty TV series or feature film. I’ve not been a big web series watcher so far but, from what little I’ve tried, I’d have to say that a healthy dose of suspense along with a certain quality that doesn’t look like corners have been cut in the technical, aesthetic and thespian departments help considerably. So this one already sits well with me.
The dramatic web TV series follows investment banker Celeste (Ryan Michelle Bathe – “Trauma”), a woman who plays by her own rules until an unsavory client (Brad Raider) makes her a target of FBI Special Agent Rick Taylor (Eddie Goines).
Visit the Celeste Bright website for more information.

Trailer for an upcoming web series created and written by Sonya Steele, co-directed by Joe Doughrity and Gregory Storm.
It’s titled Celeste Bright, and is described as a drama series that “follows investment banker Celeste (Ryan Michelle Bathe from Trauma), a woman who plays by her own rules, until an unsavory client (Brad Raider) makes her a target of FBI Special Agent Rick Taylor (Eddie Goines).”
I’m definitely intrigued by what I see in the below trailer, and I’ll be giving this a look when it debuts online in June, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the below trailer for Celeste Bright:
