Jet frontman Nic Cester revealed in a recent interview that he auditioned to be the singer of AC/DC in 2016. The job eventually went to Axl Rose, but Cester has quite a story to tell his grandkids one day.
Twenty years ago, Jet were the hottest rock export out of Australia, with hits like “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” and “Cold Hard Bitch” featuring a sound that melded the power of fellow Aussies AC/DC with the garage-rock stylings of The White Stripes.

As Cester told Australian radio station Triple J, he got the call to audition for the vacant AC/DC singer slot when Brian Johnson had to step away from the band due to hearing issues.

This new Italian series The Good Mothers, offers a unique twist on the crime genre: this is the mafia seen entirely from the women’s perspectives. The series is a multifaceted, choral work that tells the true story of three women, raised within the fiercest and richest clans of ‘Ndrangheta. They decide to cooperate with a courageous magistrate working to destroy it from within. These women will then have to fight against their own families for the right to survive and build a new future for themselves and their children.

The Jaded Hearts Club – a supergroup featuring members of Muse, Blur, Jet, Last Shadow Puppets and the Zutons – unveiled a new rendition of the Marvin Gaye rarity, “This Love Starved Heart of Mine (It’s Killing Me).”
Gaye originally recorded the track in 1967, not long after his breakout hit “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” though “This Love Starved Heart of Mine” wouldn’t see release until 1994. I don’t fancy myself much of an iOS or Android gamer, but when games that could easily hold their own on other platforms start finding their way to phones, my ears perk up. Fittingly, Sega has just announced that it will be bringing four new titles to mobile platforms in the coming months, with three of them arriving in time for the holidays or sooner.
You can check out the press release below for all the details, but what will most likely jump out at people the most are the two planned Sonic the Hedgehog releases. The first is called Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, a kart racer promising land, sea, and air traversal ala Diddy Kong Racing, in addition to a host of playable characters from Sega’s substantial cast. Oh, and the karts can transform, hence Racing Transformed. Hopefully Sonic will scream “transfoooooorm!!” like the Lumas from Super...

A little while back, I published my very first What Culture article about the 7 Biggest Jerks In Gaming. The article consisted of a list of gaming characters who, for one reason or another, I considered to be massive douchebags.
A couple of months have passed now and I feel it is now time to look at some more of gaming’s biggest a**holes.
Some of the characters on this list may intentionally be jerks because they are the villain of the game that they star in. Some may be good guys who just provoke ire from deep within the gamer’s soul. Some may even be a character that we, as the player, control and are therefore a reflection of the innate inner douchbaggery that lives within us all (Spoiler: One of the entries is Totally that last one.)
There may also be some spoilers so please be wary!

Pia McGeogh in Play Melbourne campaign
Tourism Victoria is claiming that Melbourne is Australia’s top destination for domestic holidaymakers off the back of its popular ‘Play Melbourne’ campaign, which launched in June last year.
Play Melbourne was created by Publicis Mojo Melbourne, which lost the prestigious account to Clemenger Bbdo Melbourne shortly after launching the campaign.
“In the year following the launch of the Play Melbourne campaign in June 2011, Melbourne attracted 454,000 more interstate holiday visitors than Sydney,” a Victorian Government spokesperson told Mumbrella, referring to the National Visitor Survey.
Melbourne comes out ahead of the Gold Coast and Sydney as the preferred domestic holiday destination among Australians aged 14 and over, she added.
“There was strong year-on-year growth in holiday visitors to Melbourne from Sydney (+34.8%), while visits from South-East Queensland (Brisbane and Gold Coast) also increased (+4.7%),” she said.

Jet Set Radio was a game initially developed for the Sega Dreamcast by Smilebit, a studio set up by Sega to work exclusively on developing new and interesting IPs to support their fledgling fifth-gen console. Out of the line-up they produced, Jet Set Radio become far-and-away the most iconic title to land on the Dreamcast, often considered to be the platform's "mascot" title. The game struck a chord with the Japanese public on its release for its strong personality as a game and its eclectic mash-up of musical styles in its soundtrack; in the West, it become iconic for its wacky nature, stylish cel-shaded graphics and ludicrously fun gameplay. It quickly become a cult classic from the turn-of-the-millenium era of gaming, and a small but dedicated fanbase have been pressuring Sega to do something with the franchise after it was all-but-abandoned following the release of Jet Set Radio Future on...

Over a decade ago, a creative and somewhat surreal game known as Jet Set Radio debuted on Sega’s Saturn. Originally referred to as Jet Grind Radio here on our North American shores, the title received a lot of buzz for its innovative cel-shaded visual style, phenomenal soundtrack and short burst appeal, eventually becoming one of the console’s most talked-about releases. As a result, it’s not surprising that the Japanese gaming giant decided to revisit its past success, choosing to give the classic a high-definition makeover, in order to position it for a re-release on both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.
For those who aren’t familiar with the series, Jet Set Radio is a quirky title that borrows elements from the action, platforming and extreme sports genres, though its main focus is not on performing visceral tricks in exchange for an assortment of in-game points.

Sega of America and Sega Europe have both confirmed that this summer the Dreamcast rollerblading graffiti epic, Jet Set Radio, is heading to Vita and that it will be in playable form at this year’s E3.
The classic from 2000 is heading to Vita with updated HD visuals and will take full advantage of the systems touch capabilities which according to Haruki Satomi, Sega’s Senior Vice President of Digital Business, “are proving to be a perfect fit”. Also the Vita’s camera will be integrated into the game somehow, but specific functions remained undisclosed.
A few screens have surfaced for the Vita version and after almost 12 years this game still holds up really well in the visuals department. This game will no doubt look gorgeous on the Vita’s Oled screen and it will be interesting to see if or how they incorporate the second analog stick on the...

I bet you and I both had the same favorite gay cartoon character growing up: no one. Because there were none.
You could pretend that He-Man was a roving homosexual with West Hollywood-primed muscles, but he wasn't gay. And that didn't matter, because young homos who loved cartoons simply relied on awesome animated ladies for edification. The ladies took charge, looked fab, represented our bursting drive and self-possession, and sometimes even solved crimes. I've picked the ten most fabulous lady cartoons ever with one stipulation: Everyone on this list first hit the small screen before 2000. We're going for "classics" here, not total comprehension. (I'd be including ladies from Archer and Venture Bros., in that case.)
10. Valerie, from Josie and the Pussycats
Is there any doubt that Valerie made Josie and the Pussycats the supergroup they are? She handled two tambourines at once, bopped harder than her bandmates, and swayed like...

Originally released on the Dreamcast in 2000, Jet Set Radio follows the story of a gang of rollerblading graffiti artists battling an oppressive government by tagging territories in the city of Tokyo-to. In the U.S., it was originally renamed Jet Grind Radio. It was one of the first games to use the now-common technique of “cel-shading,” generating polygonal graphics that look like 2-D animation.

For some of you younger readers out there, rollerblades were like wheelies for grownups. Grownups who were extreme. The Dreamcast classic Jet Set Radio (re-christened Jet Grind Radio here in the U.S.) channeled that extremity into the best skating/tagging video game in that incredibly limited gaming genre, and in spite of that dubious distinction was actually a terrific, brightly-colored game that appears to be coming back to consoles thanks to publisher Sega at some mysterious point in the future.
Sega teased the release of the E3 Critic's Choice award-winning game with a title and image-free trailer and the text "Guess Who's Coming Back," but the hip hop track playing under the teaser is pretty familiar. In spite of the sometimes hit or mess nature of some of the recent Dreamcast to HD ports (Crazy Taxi comes to mind for one), I'm hoping Sega is able to keep this title intact.

He might be referring to that scene in the first Expendables where he chose Stallone's mercenary over a rival outfit lead by The Governator. There was snarling and scowling and posturing aplenty. In his recent book Monsters In The Movies, John Landis talks about how movies are one of the few art forms in which even the bad examples can be enjoyed. The director of ‘American Werewolf In London’ and ‘The Blues Brothers’ further argued this notion with a recent interview with Tor.com.
“Movies have this unique power over books, music, or paintings. We’ll watch a bad movie. If we see a bad painting, we’ll not linger on it for hours at a time, we’ll walk way. But we don’t do that with movies. We’ll sit through them”
Landis is absolutely right, and it’s now increasingly common for awful movies to cultivate their own cult fanbases, as well as recognition for being some of the worst of all time.
In celebration of good-bad movies everywhere, here’s my personal pick of 10 of the most enjoyable bad movies ever made.

A 1999 demo promoting the ruinously expensive Shenmue (called “What’s Shenmue?”) featured an exclusive scene in which then company president Yukawa-san could be seen slumped at his desk, head in hands, surrounded by piles of unsold consoles (above). Deep down, Sega must have known the Dreamcast didn’t stand a chance even before they axed it two years later.
Even though the Sega Dreamcast enjoyed a relatively short lifespan (officially somewhere between its 1998 Japanese launch and late 2002 termination) and wasn’t supported at all by the most powerful publisher of the day (Electronic Arts) the well-loved machine still boasts an impressive library of titles.

One of the definitive early titles for the PS1, Die Hard Trilogy was a noble attempt to blend three different games together on one disk. While each of the games were rough around the edges, they were great fun, making it easy to ignore any shortcomings.
Die Hard was a third person shooter with McLane battling through each floor of the Nakatomi Plaza. Die Hard 2, a first person on-rails shooter, aping the style of games such as Virtua Cop and Time Crisis. Finally, Die Hard with a Vengeance was a timed arcade driving game.
It was also great due to its brilliantly dumb voice acting, with a Bruce Willis impersonator delivering such cracking lines as “What? No Turkey?” when picking up a health pack. The soundtrack was awesome too.

Tuesday's Season 8 finale of "One Tree Hill" was not the series finale -- just hours before airtime, The CW officially picked up a 13-episode Season 9. That said, it could have easily served as a satisfying end to the series. Though Mark Schwahn shot several cliffhangers to end the season on in case Season 9 got the green light, he ultimately decided to end with some closure.

The big three. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. These are the three names that come to most peoples’ minds when they think about the gaming industry, but these weren’t always the recognizable household names they are now. A few years ago, you couldn’t leave your house without hearing mention of Sega, and, most recently in the console department, the Sega Dreamcast.
Now, there’s a rumor circulating that Sega is currently working on a console to enter into the next generation of the console wars. This comes from their recent announcement that they have signed on to work with Imagination Technologies in the United Kingdom on the “very high-tech image of the next generation console.”
This could be little more than wishful thinking, but there’s always the possibility that this could happen. Still, this could just mean that Sega is helping another company to decide how their next generation console will look.

It's hard to imagine how one brings variety to skateboarding video games. You are, after all, limited to certain aspects like ollies, kick-flips and grabs. As the "Tony Hawk" franchise has found, that formula is extremely difficult to keep fresh from year to year. EA's "Skate" has seen some success, but after the third installment, those games are really just iterating on what came before rather than innovating in any significant way. "Shaun White Skateboarding" is attempting to bring some innovation to the genre with a unique art style and some never-before-seen gameplay elements, but is it enough to separate it from the pack?
"Wizard Of Oz" Much?
"Shaun White Skateboarding" is set in an imaginary world ruled by a totalitarian regime. Under the auspices of keeping the populace safe, extreme activities like skateboarding have been banned and the world is left in a dull, colorless (literally) state. It's up...

"Chuck" has wrapped production on its third season, but when Zap2it reached co-creator Chris Fedak on Thursday (April 22), he was still at work -- hashing out stories for Season 4.
Wait -- Season 4? Have stumbled onto a big scoop about the show's future? Alas, not yet. "There's no news there," Fedak says. "We're still waiting on NBC to make a decision."
Fedak does allow, though, that he and the rest of the "Chuck" team are optimistic about their chances for renewal. "I'm not a person who walks around with a great deal of confidence -- I have a great deal of neuroses and anxieties, sure," he says. "But we feel good -- we have a great relationship with NBC and with Warner Bros. Everyone really digs the show. So we're hopeful."
More immediate, though, are the six episodes that remain this season, starting with "Chuck vs. the Honeymooners" on Monday (April 26). In some ways,...

Jet frontman Nic Cester thinks Sir Paul McCartney was the most talented Beatle. The Australian rocker is in awe of the 67-year-old star's musicianship and thinks it is wrong his bass playing is often overshadowed and his vocals "underrated" compared to his Fab Four contemporaries John Lennon and George Harrison. He said: "He has an innate sense of melody that is quite unique to him. It is easy to overlook his bass-playing because of his other contributions to music, like his songwriting. He's a pretty underrated singer, too. He could cross between ballads and rockers without breaking a sweat." Another of Nic's musical heroes is Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, and he would have him in his dream band. He...

Jet have revealed that they presumed that Oasis would split. The Australian band noted tension between Noel and Liam Gallagher four years ago. Frontman Nic Cester told The Sun: "I'm not surprised they split at all. If anything I'm shocked they managed to make it work for so long. I'd say it's definitely the end. They didn't get on." Drummer Chris Cester added: "They (more)...

One of the perks of being in a rock band is the opportunity to travel the world and entertain your fans in exotic locations. Of course, the downside of all that traveling is that you are susceptible to every nasty virus, bug and epidemic the globe has to offer, not to mention exhaustion and a good chance of serious injury.
And so, we give you a shockingly long list of the recent walking wounded.
» Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler: The 61-year-old front man of the veteran hard rockers took a tumble of a stage in South Dakota last week and though no official word has been given on what injuries he sustained, they are rumored to include a broken collarbone.
» Kasabian singer Tom Meighan: The leader of the techno-rocking British band has been quarantined after being diagnosed with swine flu in the midst of the band's current Far East swing.

While I was attending to dance duties Saturday night (see below), a gloriosky rock event was taking place at Radio City Music Hall: an all-star benefit concert presented by David Lynch and headlined by the surviving half of the Beatles. If only I could have twinned myself and been two places at once, taking in Moby and Sheryl Crow midtown while watching "A Teacup Plunge" uptown, but science hasn't yet progressed that far, which is probably for the best. Overpopulation is dire enough as it is without multiplying the problem with millions of clones and replicants attempting to multitask. Fortunately, Vf's Michael Hogan was on the scene at Radio City to file a report on the intergalactic gala, braving the ragged clots of scam artists outside trying to scalp used mantras before entering the mothership of bliss consciousness. Pockets of tedium were trapped inside, only to explode when Paul McCartney...

Days after their reunion in Miami Beach, Chris Brown and Rihanna are "staying close to home" together, says a source. An earlier report that Brown was partying at the Gansevoort South hotel with Reggie Bush and Khloe Kardashian on Saturday night turns out to be a case of mistaken identity. Kardashian wrote on her blog, "So I woke up this morning to a ridiculous amount of missed calls and news Everywhere that I had been spotted out and about in Miami with Chris Brown. The funny part about this alleged 'news' is that I've never even met Chris Brown!" The reason for the confusion?...

Question: I had just finished watching Run Fatboy Run, and I was raving to my friend about how beautiful and talented I think Thandie Newton is. My friend said that Thandie is bisexual...is this true? Is she definitely bisexual?
— Lindsey, New Orleans, Louisiana
Thandie Newton
Answer: Since it's really up to the individual in question to officially label their sexual orientation, I think it's safer to say that she's "potentially" bisexual.
Actress Thandie Newton (W., Crash) is married to director Ol Parker, who made many new lesbian friends when he wrote and directed the romantic comedy Imagine Me & You (2005), starring Piper Perabo and Lena Headey.

San Diego -- Fans were front and center at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International as interaction between Hollywood and the Geek Nation reached new heights, especially at the event's now-signature studio presentations.
"Without you guys I wouldn't have a career," said surprise guest Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine, during Fox's "X-Men" panel. "Without you guys, there wouldn't be this base of comic book movies."
Teams from virtually every major TV and film studio were on hand to rollout stars, gift bags, glitzy presentations and targeted panels in a bid to connect with the more than 125,000 passionate fans in attendance. After a few years of massive growth, not all of it smooth, the Con seems to have found its groove -- and an acceptance that long lines are a way of life now.
The event delivered some surprises and provided an opportunity for the studios to gauge and generate buzz on their projects. Warners' "Watchmen," Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," and Disney's "Tron 2.0" emerged as the most talked-about, while Summit created a sensation unlike anything the 39-year-old event had seen when the "fan girl" crowd went nuts over the vampire romance "Twilight."
If decibel levels and enthusiasm count, studios as a whole were successful in their attempts to woo the fickle fanbase.
Warner Bros. threw the two A-list presentations during the 4 1/2-day event that concluded Sunday. It showcased the graphic novel adaptation "Watchmen" on Friday and "Terminator Salvation" on Saturday. During the "Watchmen" presentation, press and industryites stood six deep along the side to hear director Zack Snyder and his cast.
The two panels showed how seriously Warners takes Comic-Con as executives from Alan Horn, Jeff Robinov and Kevin McCormick on down packed every seat in the VIP section of WB's tightly organized panels. Not every studio was quite as gung-ho. Fox's Tom Rothman and Sony's Jeff Blake showed up, but their VIP sections were mostly an oasis of half-empty seats in a sea of packed fans.
"Terminator" appeared to have built buzz and awareness thanks to the event. The film's director, McG, who has been judged harshly by the fan community in the past, won over the crowd with a fun presentation and strong footage.
Fox's "May Payne," Universal's "Wolfman" and Disney's "Bolt" and Disney/Pixar's "Up" also were well received.
Surprises proved a way to win fans' hearts. On the event's first day, Fox trotted out Jackman to showcase some footage from "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Disney, meanwhile, brought test footage from the new "Tron," which quickly became the talk of the Con. At one party Saturday night, people huddled around a man who was showing off the footage on his iPhone.
The Force was strong with the studios for which filmmakers and stars made a point of interacting with the fanbase.
"Lost" showrunners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof charmed fans while handing out prizes during a question-and-answer session, while star Matthew Fox posed with a devotee onstage. Film helmer McG brought laughed it up onstage with a fan who did a killer Arnold Schwarzenegger impression.
Jet-lagged "Wolverine" star Jackman waded into the audience to pay tribute to the film's co-creator, Len Wien.
Among the most entertaining session was Columbia's panel for "Pineapple Express," which saw Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, James Franco and others take the Con hilariously deep into R-rated territory. Certain questioners became fixtures, and some appeared in character, including one whose shtick even threw off Rogen.
There wasn't much real news. Sam Raimi is developing a new "Evil Dead" movie with his brother, Ivan; producer Michael Uslan announced plans for a "Doc Savage" adaptation; and a writer for "The Simpsons" said a sequel to the hit film was unlikely.
Comic-Con's party scene, however, seemed to hit new heights. Rather than the industry seeking beachheads in the heart of geek nation as in the past, this year it seemed that Tinseltown's entire social scene was transplanted to San Diego. There was a Paris Hilton sighting Thursday, but it was Friday night's DC Comics bash that was one of the highlights. The bash has become a don't-miss event with its mix of stars, comic creators and execs.
Wma and UTA threw competing shindigs, but the Maxim-"Pineapple Express" festivities seemed the most popular. Saturday night was the established Sci Fi/Entertainment Weekly party, competing for attendees with "The Wrath of Con," a bash thrown by IESB, Bloody Disgusting and Lakeshore Entertainment.
Not all of the participants were thrilled with Hollywood's high-profile presence, however.
"I'm going to try to find some comic readers," one scribe said as he left a party filled with execs, agents and stars.
