The Star Wars prequels cast Hayden Christensen as the tragic character Darth Vader. His performance made a huge fan out of Nicolas Cage, who Christensen would end up working with in another film.

Cage and Christensen worked together for the first time in the 2014 film Outcast. But Cage was already familiar with Christensen’s work years before their collaboration. In a resurfaced interview with IGN (via Contact Music), Cage confided that he’d been keeping an eye on Christensen since his Star Wars days. The prequels were typically criticized back in the day for some of the acting. But the movie star was more than impressed by what Christensen brought to the table.

Bad sequels are far from a rarity, as there have been numerous instances where a sequel fails to recapture the original’s spirit, and Wonder Woman 1984 is no exception. Despite dropping the ball hard with the main conflict between Batman and Superman, Dawn of Justice did succeed in doing Diana Prince’s introduction to the Dceu justice.
Moreover, this was followed by arguably the best film in the Dceu, Wonder Woman, which made waves upon its release, making Gal Gadot one of the biggest names in the business. Unfortunately, the sequel failed to live up to its universally acclaimed predecessor, and its weak antagonist isn’t the lone aspect that contributed to it.

Throughout its run, the Dceu had a major villain problem, whether it be Steppenwolf in the theatrical version of Justice League or Enchantress in Suicide Squad.

This is a slow weekend in an already slow summer movie season, so it’s the perfect time to catch up with spring’s best horror release and a handful of new indies that are debuting on digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “The First Omen“
At a time when many franchises are slowly cratering, “The First Omen” has turned out to be one of 2024’s biggest surprises. Arkasha Stevenson‘s handsome and terrifying prequel depicts the events right before Demian, the Og Antichrist, came around. If that sounds unnecessary, it is — and yet the film’s quality absolutely justifies its existence. “The First Omen” is still playing in a smattering of theaters, having grossed $53.7 worldwide, but now it’s available for $19.99 on VOD.
Other contenders:
“Gasoline Rainbow”: Mubi is having a major year, with two buzzy Cannes titles — “The Substance” and “The Girl with the Needle...

Taylor Sheridan may have earned his name as one of the best writers cum filmmakers of all time, but unfortunately for him, he hasn’t always sported the privilege of getting his work to remain natural and up to his choices, undeterred by others’ opinions. For instance, one of his most personal works had to face a serious change because of the same, as opposed to his wishes.

This work was his fan-favorite and critically appreciated blockbuster Western/crime from 2016, Hell or High Water, and the major change it had to go through was related to the title Sheridan had originally decided for it. However, the mastermind had to agree to change it, all because of a tussle with a marketing executive who didn’t find his version of the name appealing enough.

A live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series was in development for Paramount+ and had even been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order by the streaming service, but Deadline now reports that the project is no longer moving forward.
However, the Dungeons & Dragons series isn’t entirely dead, as Hasbro Entertainment will be shopping it to other potential buyers. It’s also said the series will receive a creative update which will be tackled by a new creative team. The version which was sold to Paramount+ was overseen by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper), who wrote the pilot script and was going to direct the first episode. Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) was brought on to serve as executive producer and showrunner last year.
The report states that Hasbro remains committed to the Dungeons & Dragons TV series, meaning that it will likely be a matter of when, not if, the project emerges elsewhere.

Theo James will star opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson in British heist thriller Fuze, a film that comes with an explosive twist.
Theo James is one of those actors who seems to keep earning plaudits whatever he features in and as such, he’s got a couple of promising film projects in the pipeline. Chief among them? A starring role in David Mackenzie’s upcoming British heist thriller, Fuze.
James most recently starred in The Gentlemen, the small screen spin-off (pictured) from Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film. Writing, acting, directing; Taylor Sheridan is known for many things and how. The cowboy whisperer of Hollywood, the man is responsible for some incredible work including Sicario, Wind River, and of course, the Yellowstone franchise which has everyone and then some hooked to it. Clearly, he knows how to tell raw and intense stories all while delivering something new each time.
Wind River (2017) | Thunder Road Pictures
The 2016 film, Hell or High Water, is a great example of Taylor Sheridan’s incredible mind. the neo-Western crime drama focuses on two brothers carrying out a series of bank robberies in order to save their family ranch. Hell or High Water is extremely personal to Taylor Sheridan, even though it is not autobiographical. But did you know that the film was not supposed to be of the neo-western genre and this was just a happy accident?

Paramount Pictures has a few successful franchises, but the studio's apparent inability to do more with Star Trek is beyond confusing.
When J.J. Abrams relaunched the franchise in 2009, the stage was set for it to become a mainstream property, something which looked increasingly likely when the sequels - Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond - were also moderate box office hits. Unfortunately, Star Trek 4 has been stuck in development hell for several years.
Filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Matt Shakman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet are just some of the names who have been attached to the movie in recent years, with none of them ultimately sticking around.
Now, with it seemingly no closer to becoming a reality, it seems Paramount's next prequel project is finally taking shape.

It's fair to say that, since 2016's Star Trek Beyond, the big and small screen incarnations of the venerable sci-fi franchise have certainly diverged in terms of output. While the films have been seemingly stuck in dry dock as different options are announced, only to fail to appear, the TV universe has exploded in all sorts of interesting directions. Part of the Paramount+ success appears to be having Alex Kurtzman as a producing/writing guiding light, and it seems that Paramount's studio division is aiming to have someone take over the film side in a similar capacity. That someone? Simon Kinberg.

"Star Trek" has just added a new captain to Starfleet's prestigious ranks, and she's definitely worthy of wearing the uniform. Even as the franchise is undergoing some change on the television side of things, as "Discovery" speeds headlong towards its last couple of episodes in its final season and the animated "Lower Decks" is similarly coming to a close, fans will have another new series to look forward to -- and no less than an Oscar-winning actor is now attached as the lead.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix’s Simon Kinberg is in talks to produce new Star Trek film franchise at Paramount
As Paramount+ is keeping the Star Trek brand going with their new TV iterations, the movie side of the mountain has been hatching a plan to revitalize Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a peaceful future for the big screen. There are multiple projects in development, which include a swan song for the Kelvin Universe crew which began with 2009’s J.J. Abrams Star Trek. Early last year, Abrams teased his Star Trek 4, saying, “I will say it’s the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one.” However, the series star, Chris Pine, is kept in the dark about it, “In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors.”

Veteran producer Simon Kinberg, who oversaw most of the “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox, is in talks to produce an upcoming “Star Trek” movie for Paramount Pictures, Variety has confirmed.
The project has already been in development at the studio for some time, with Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) handing the screenplay and Toby Haynes on board to direct. Insiders say the film is intended as an origin story for the main timeline of the “Star Trek” franchise, set in the aftermath of humanity’s first contact with aliens.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may have been relatively new to the scene as far as the adventures of the USS Enterprise are concerned but it is far from being a lame attempt at a cash-grab spin-off. Starring Anson Mount, Rebecca Romjin, and Ethan Peck in the lead cast, the new series explores worlds far beyond the stretches of what the known galaxy holds.

When Chris Pine embarked on his journey with Poolman, he never expected it would receive such a polarizing reception. Pine’s directorial debut, a passion project borne out of his love for cinema, has not had the smoothest sailing. When the film came out at Toronto and just got fucking panned… I tried to make a joyful film, Pine confessed during an emotional segment on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The stark contrast between his vision and the public’s reception prompted Pine to revisit his work. I watched my film. After the reviews in Toronto, I was like maybe I did

It takes a certain caliber of actors to move seamlessly through the entertainment industry and make just enough waves while avoiding the pitfalls.
That's what Jennifer Morrison has managed to do in almost 30 years of her career.
While the actress has primarily stayed in the television lane, she's been in her fair share of films.
However, after her unforgettable role as Emma Swan, Morrison has taken up a directorial hat and is now working behind the scenes.
Don't worry, though, because we have compiled a list of some of the actress's most prolific work.
Also, for those inclined to IMDb, be sure to check out the cast list of a specific slasher entry on the list.
It's technically the only slasher movie here, but you'll still see some big names.
The actor has rubbed elbows with some of Hollywood's biggest names, so don't be surprised if you recognize her from some big-budget films and franchises.

Of all the contenders to play James Bond next, many would argue that Tom Hardy is effortlessly one of the best choices ever. His wit, charming demeanor, and overall personality make him stand out among everyone else and seem like the perfect choice to embody the peerless spy. Plus, he’s British, so that checks out another box of requirements for the character.

However, even after all these similarities, one thing still stands in the way between everyone deeming him to be the perfect choice for this role. This one thing is his 12-year-old $156 million box office disaster with Chris Pine, This Means War, which featured him as a CIA agent but failed to garner many appraisals for Hardy in the role because of his lackluster performance.

If you’ve been keeping up with distribution news recently, there’s been one name you’ll have seen pop up again and again: Vertical.
Since the pandemic, the bottom has fallen out of the film business, with more quality indie packages hitting the marketplace than there are distributors willing to take them on. Stepping up, in the years since, to offer many of them a home, is this indie distributor, which appears to be in the midst of its biggest year yet.
Founded in 2012 by Rich Goldberg and Mitch Budin, Vertical comes from humble beginnings, according to partner Peter Jarowey, who notes that the team at one point operated out of “a literal broom closet.” Initially working to establish itself as a resource in securing ancillary revenue for indies, the company has of late has become a theatrical player in its own right. Taylor Sheridan is now a big-name filmmaker creating some of the most acclaimed projects for Paramount. The multi-talented writer/director is responsible for the creation of the network’s most successful show Yellowstone. He has also created various spinoffs and other intriguing shows that have become hits for the streamer.
In addition to being the writer of Hell or High Water, Taylor Sheridan played an anonymous cowboy in the film
Before Yellowstone, Sheridan was relatively unknown in the industry and was trying to make a name in the industry. His first script Sicario directed by Denis Villeneuve turned out to be a hit and he had another script for another crime drama Hell or High Water. The Texas-based story had to be rooted in the state’s history and the problems plaguing people, with one city’s environment becoming the film’s inspiration.

Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman released a couple of days ago may be the best thing that ever happened to him, but everyone else would probably disagree. Starring Pine himself, the movie got its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival where it was received coldly, yet relatively well, but after things were quick to get out of the actor’s control.
Upon its release in the US on May 10, Poolman was brutally crushed by both critics and viewers ending up with quite miserable scores of 18% and 22% respectively.
Being Chris Pine’s brainchild in all aspects, Poolman follows Darren Barrenman who spends his days cleaning the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block while also trying to turn Los Angeles, his hometown, into a better place to live in.

The annual celebration of Mom brightened things up at the summer box office, with the first movie to open over $50 million since March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The hopes for the summer box office were almost dashed by the poor showing of season opener “The Fall Guy” last weekend, so fortunately, this weekend didn’t follow suit. Of course, the big winner for the weekend was 20th Century’s franchise sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which came into the weekend with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% Fresh, on par with “The Fall Guy.”
After making $6.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews and $22.2 million on Friday (including those previews), Disney has estimated “Apes” to open with $56.5 million, which is slightly higher than the $56.2 million opening for “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017.

Actor Nathan Fillion got his breakthrough role in the cult classic Firefly. The series was similar to one of many shows featuring a space crew traveling to different planets, including Star Trek. But Fillion felt Firefly differed from the likes of Star Trek in a pretty grounded way.

On the surface, Star Trek and Firefly might look similar enough without any context. But beyond their premises of space crews exploring the galaxy, they couldn’t have been anymore different. Star Trek often features an altruistic space crew trying to influence the galaxy for the better. Firefly, however, was about individual characters with often vastly different views coming together and simply trying to get by.

It all seemed great on paper. Chris Pine is the director, main star, and co-writer (with Ian Gotler). Alongside him, we have Annette Benning, Ray Wise, Ariana DeBose, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Danny DeVito – all great and well-known names. The movie? A mystery comedy akin to Polanski’s 1970s classic Chinatown, with a random poolman as the main character who discovers a sizeable water heist. It couldn’t be that bad, could it? Well, it could. The movie premiered in Toronto last year and the critics were not satisfied even then. Now, the movie is available in theaters in the United States, and we are sad to report that the critics have panned the movie completely, making Pine’s directorial debut a failure.
The movie’s official synopsis is as follows: “In Chris Pine’s feature directorial debut, Poolman tells the story of Darren Barrenman (Pine), a native Angeleno who...

Chris Pine hopes he just found Luca Guadagnino’s next project: Disney’s “Princess Diaries 3.”
The actor and “Poolman” director proposed collaborating with the “Challengers” director for the third franchise installment during Entertainment Weekly’s Role Call Youtube series.
“‘Princess Diaries 3,’ where is it?’ Have you been reading my diary?” Pine quipped when revisiting his past roles. “I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything about it.”
However, Pine did have his own pitch for the film.
“You know, like, what it would be? It would be like a Luca Guadagnino film,” Pine said. “[If he] directs ‘Princess Diaries 3,’ now that is fucking fire.”
Of course, “Princess Diaries 3” would have to come after Guadagnino’s “Separate Rooms” with Lea Séydoux and Josh O’Connor. Guadagnino is also debuting “Queer” at Cannes 2024.

Plot: A spacey pool cleaner (Chris Pine) discovers a plot to steal water from Los Angeles during a drought.
Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. That it was made at all is a testament to the power of celebrity, as it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.
So why is Poolman so awful? It comes down to the screenplay and Pine’s grating lead performance as a kind of...

Chris Pine’s most recognizable film appearance is undoubtedly his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the hit science fiction franchise Star Trek. He portrayed the part earnestly that many fans would believe he was the top choice for the role, but he wasn’t.

With many starring roles, including the “Star Trek” and “Wonder Woman” franchises, Chris Pine is obviously leading man material. But the actor recently went behind the camera for his directorial debut, “Poolman,” a comedy-mystery that he co-wrote and stars in alongside Annette Bening, DeWanda Wise, Ariana DeBose, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, and more.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, it’s a film that Pine is exceptionally proud of, but it was savaged with negative reviews at the time (it currently sits at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes).
