Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

This wouldn’t be Sigourney Weaver’s first time in space, but it would be her introduction into a galaxy far, far away! The famed Alien, Galaxy Quest and Ghostbusters actress is currently in talks to join Jon Favreau’s big-screen adventures of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Deadline is reporting that Weaver is considering a “key role” in the theatrical debut of the Disney+ characters. She’s undoubtedly a commanding presence, even when her screen time is limited to a guest appearance. But how will she fit into the Star Wars universe?
The woman who made Ellen Ripley a legendary character could easily be some Mandalorian matriarch. Or she could be a ruthless Imperial commander or Moff. Maybe even another one of those Jedi who escaped Order 66?

Sigourney Weaver is in talks to star in the upcoming Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Word of Weaver’s involvement became public on Friday, first reported by The InSneider newsletter. Currently, her role and its scope are unknown, but given Weaver’s track record for starring in sci-fi hits, the casting feels appropriate.
The Mandalorian & Grogu was first announced this past January, and will see Pedro Pascal reprise the titular role that he originated with the 2019 Disney+ series The Mandalorian. N0w, making the jump to the big screen, the film will expand upon the show’s universe (which also spurred the spinoff series Ahsoka).
Jon Favreau, creator of The Mandalorian, will return to direct the film, which also marks the first feature-length Star Wars release since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni will produce, as will Favreau.

"Alien" star Sigourney Weaver is headed back to space, but this time, instead of fighting off aliens, she could be befriending them. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Weaver is in talks to take on a role in "The Mandalorian & Grogu," the upcoming "Star Wars" film that will be directed by Jon Favreau.
While "Star Wars" has been pretty prolific on the small screen in recent years, the saga created by George Lucas hasn't actually released a new feature film since 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker." "The Mandalorian & Grogu" was officially announced in January of this year, after years of media focus spent on other potential Lucasfilm works-in-progress, including projects from Taika Waititi and Patty Jenkins. Most of those projects seem to still be in the works according to recent reports, but "The Mandalorian & Grogu" is set to head into production first with a summer shoot scheduled,...

The reigning Queen of Comic-Con and the ultimate science fiction superstar, Sigourney Weaver, might be gearing up to conquer yet another interstellar franchise.
Weaver is in talks to join the cast of the Star Wars film, “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” Variety has confirmed.
Earlier this year, Lucasfilm announced the standalone spinoff featuring Pedro Pascal as the stoic bounty hunter known as “The Mandalorian” (or Djarin to fans deep in the franchise) and his disarmingly charming puppet counterpart Grogru. Created by Jon Favreau for Disney+, the series followed the odd couple as they traipse across the galaxy far, far away avoiding the Empire and safeguarding the adorable green creature whilst forging a relationship for the ages. It’s part Western, part monster-of-the-week with delightful cameos from Star Wars universe legacy characters sprinkled in now and again.

To say the Terminator timeline is pretty confusing at this point would be an understatement. The franchise, created with the release of James Cameron's seminal 1984 effort "The Terminator," has since been softly rebooted, retconned, and generally mishandled by successive generations of studios and filmmakers. So twisted is the saga's internal timeline that watching the "Terminator" movies in any kind of coherent order has become a challenge not unlike trying to destroy the T-800 himself.
Prior to the release of 2019's "Terminator: Dark Fate," things seemed to be looking up. With the help of James Cameron on producing duties, director Tim Miller decided to forget the three lackluster films that followed the modern classic that is 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" and simply pick up where that stellar entry in the franchise left off. Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.
The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart” features a powerhouse performance from veteran star Sigourney Weaver, who once again reminds us that she is one of the best in the business. The acclaimed Amazon Prime Video limited series follows a young girl who survives a violent upbringing and is then subsequently raised on a flower farm by her grandmother. Weaver plays the grandmother, June, and ties the entire series together with the sheer might of her performance. She propelled the story to greatness and, as a result, propelled the series to excellent reviews.

Helldivers 2 has been out for about three months and in that time, we have seen plenty of new and interesting content, from mission types, weapons, and stratagems.
The community achieved a major milestone when they defeated the Automaton army and had their hopes swiftly dashed a few days later when they returned. Helldivers 2 is still going strong and has daily player counts in the hundreds of thousands and the speculations of crossovers are all around.
We’re Yet to See Confirmation of Franchise Crossovers
Crossovers in Helldivers 2 would make the game a much more strong contender for Goty.
There is one thing though that we have not yet seen added to the game that would surely boost the popularity of the game even further, franchise crossovers. In an interview with Cgm, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt was asked about the possibility of guest characters from the game’s major inspirations making appearances.

When it comes to the most iconic leads to grace the silver screen, one can’t leave Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley out of the equation. While the Alien IP has witnessed several installments since its inception in ’79, the first two releases remain the franchise’s peak, often considered some of the most important contributors to the sci-fi landscape.
So it’s unsurprising to see why most hold one of the first two as one of their favorites from the iconic IP, and when Weaver was asked about her favorite one, she was quick to answer.
Aliens is Sigourney Weaver’s Favorite in the Franchise Aliens (1986)
From Ridley Scott delving into the more horror element with the first film, and James Cameron exploring more of its sci-fi aspect with the sequel, both films are considered great in their own right. But While Sigourney Weaver holds massive admiration for Scott, when...

The recipient of numerous accolades including two Golden Globes and a Grammy, Sigourney Weaver is undoubtedly one of the best actresses in Hollywood. She is well-known for her diverse filmography which comprises films like Alien and Working Girl; while the former is a sci-fi horror, the latter is a romantic comedy-drama.
Sigourney Weaver in a still from Alien
Weaver rose to fame with her performance as Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s 1979 smash hit Alien. She reprised her role in the three sequels after the first movie’s success. It is hard to picture any other actress as Ellen in her place. It might be surprising for some that a different award-winning actress was considered for the role once.

Gallic cinephiles gave James Cameron a hero’s welcome at a Paris masterclass on Thursday, ushering the action auteur onstage with a reception so thunderous that it shook the filmmaker’s oft-unflappable public demeanor.
“That’s the record,” he said in between laughs and in a show of uncommon giddiness. “That’s the record for the longest applause I’ve ever had in my life. Thank you. This is a high point of my career!”
The event kicked off a new exhibition at Paris’ Cinematheque Française that positions Cameron as a graphic artist who draws inspiration from his own subconscious. Running until January 2025, “The Art of James Cameron” showcases more then 300 paintings, etchings and production designs pulled from Cameron’s private collection, signed by the filmmaker’s own hand, and exhibited as a kind of career retrospective.

Playwright Christopher Durang died earlier this week from complications of primary progressive aphasia.
A Tony Award-winner for his 2012 play Vanya and Sonia and Mash and Spike, his work on and off-broadway spanned decades, and included several collaborations with the actress Sigourney Weaver.
He also played a little-known part in Saturday Night Live history.
It was his friendship with Weaver that brought Durang to Saturday Night Live on October 11th, 1986 for the show’s first episode of its 12th season (an episode that also saw the debut of Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman).
Weaver hosted that night, and she introduced Durang to the audience in her opening monologue before two participated in a somewhat stilted gag about Lorne Michaels convincing Weaver to appear on the show out of his love for Bertolt Brecht.

James Cameron is often considered as someone who would go beyond his way to ensure he gets his demands fulfilled. Take for example, when the filmmaker had to send out empty threats of making an Ellen Ripley-free version of Aliens, after Sigourney Weaver wasn’t approached by her agent with the offer of returning for a sequel.

According to GQ, James Cameron had spent months writing the sequel story for 1979’s Alien after he was assured by 20th Century Fox that Sigourney Weaver was tied in for a follow-up. However, after writing the script, as he was informed that the actress wasn’t even approached with the offer for a sequel, Cameron decided to fast-forward the process and get what he wanted, by bluffing.

Christopher Durang, one of American’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights whose works like Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and the Tony-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were as incisive as they were absurdly comic, died Tuesday night at his home in Pipersville, Pa., in Bucks County. He was 75.
His agent, Patrick Herold, confirmed that Durang died as a result complications of his 2016 diagnosis with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (Ppa), a form of Alzheimer’s disease that impedes the ability to process language. He remained out of the public spotlight since his condition was made public in 2022. In February, New York’s Dramatists Guild announced that the playwright would receive its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award on May 6, placing Durang on a prestigious roster alongside such past awardees as John Guare, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Miller.

Point Grey is behind series including Amazon’s The Boys and its spin-off The Boys: Gen V, Future Man, Black Monday and Preachers. It also worked with Lionsgate Television on Jason Woliner’s limited series Paul T. Goldman for Peacock.

So maybe Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hasn’t exactly been a worthwhile installment in the ongoing franchise. But it has at least given fans another slice of nostalgia, bringing back the surviving core Ghostbusters, not to mention Janine and that dickless Walter Peck. But there are still a few familiar faces that are sorely missing. So, where were Dana and Louis? Well, it turns out they weren’t really even considered for returns.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan partly dodged why both Rick Moranis’ Louis Tully— the one-time possessed neighbor of Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett, was absent. “That would be a Jason Reitman question. That was more of an Afterlife story. We never wrote a role for Louis Tully in Frozen Empire. We’ve got enough characters in this story. I love Tully by the way. I’m a huge Rick Moranis fan. They say “In space no one can hear you scream.” Buuuuuuuut we’ve seen through eight Alien films that if you’re in a spaceship plenty of people can hear you scream. The Xenomorphs have no problem causing their victims a lot of pain. Even though we’ve seen them in a lot of films, fans will mostly agree that after Aliens, the franchise was never the same. But did you know that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp almost made an Aliens sequel?
In 2015, filmmaker Blomkamp announced he had been working on a new Alien project. This was even a surprise to Fox, which owned the series. Fans seemed excited by the prospect of the director taking on the project after the imaginative sci-fi films he had been releasing. Ultimately, after some starts and stops, the film would fall apart. Let’s find out exactly why here on What Happened To This Unmade Movie?...

In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.
One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. McGrath’s movie tackled the exact same topic as the previous year’s “Capote” (the movie that earned Philip Seymour Hoffman his first and only Oscar): Truman Capote’s time spent researching and writing his true-crime classic “In Cold Blood.” After the buzzy release of “Capote” and months spent in awards season campaigning mode, no one was ready to revisit the subject.

Point Grey Pictures, the powerhouse production company run by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, has signed a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.
Details of the deal are being kept in a purple haze but it is being described as a traditional film pact in which Point Grey will produce movies across various genres.
The company previously had a content deal with Lionsgate, a pact signed in 2019, and prior to that, with production company Good Universe. Sources say Point Grey’s television deal will remain with Lionsgate.

A super Pac with ties to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is lavishing money on some embarrassingly bad ads supporting President Joe Biden’s long-shot challenger, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.). According to disclosures, We Deserve Better, launched last year, has spent $665,000 so far boosting Phillips, including $154,000 on TV ads.
Phillips, a late entry into the presidential race, is pouring his energy into New Hampshire, operating on the theory that a triumph in the first-in-the nation primary, where Biden will not appear on the ballot, could catapult his candidacy to national relevance.

When you think of your favorite children's books, you might fondly recall getting lost in a Dr. Seuss adventure or your parents reading you "Goodnight, Moon." "Treasure Island" might come to mind, or if you're an Brit like myself, perhaps a delightful bedtime adventure with the "Famous Five." Well, it seems the next generation can look forward to something altogether more unsettling because Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 effort "Alien" is now being made into a children's book.

Vintage film restoration and distribution company Film Masters continues its tribute to the pope of pop cinema, Roger Corman, with the third installment of The Filmgroup series on Blu-ray and DVD, The Devil’s Partner, available 16th January 2024.
Corman and his brother, Gene, founded The Filmgroup to distribute their own films. While the company did produce the majority of its films, including the cult classic Creature From The Haunted Sea, it also occasionally acquired projects by other filmmakers, as is the case with The Devil’s Partner (1961). From director Charles R. Rondeau, the film is a macabre tale of an elderly man who regains his youth after making a deal with the devil. During the summer and fall of 1961, the two films were often paired as a double feature.

The craziest thing about the "Alien" franchise is just how much of its success seems to have come about at least partially by accident, or by improvisation. By the second movie, Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley had been firmly established as the face of the franchise, as well as one of the most beloved sci-fi leads of all time, but in the original script for "Alien" her character wasn't even supposed to be a woman. Even after Ripley's gender was flipped, the decision to let her survive had little to do with feminism or making Ripley into a franchise lead, but just with subverting expectations. "No one on that film was a feminist," Sigourney Weaver said in a 2006 interview. "Everyone thought, 'Who will ever think the woman is gonna be the survivor?' So it was just one big gag."

Dust Bunny: David Dastmalchian joins Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver in Bryan Fuller horror film
Actor David Dastmalchian has an impressive list of credits that includes Late Night With the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Oppenheimer, The Boogeyman, Dune, The Suicide Squad, the Ant-Man films, Blade Runner 2049, The Belko Experiment, Prisoners, and The Dark Knight, among many others. Now Collider reports that Dastmalchian has joined the cast of Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s family-oriented horror project Dust Bunny.
This project was announced last November, not long before we learned that Fuller is also working on a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake for franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Dust Bunny went into production earlier this year, with Hannibal himself Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver (Alien) in lead roles.

Cameron and Weaver already collaborated for a sci-fi feature years before Avatar. Cameron directed the sequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien, with Weaver once again battling extraterrestrial invaders in deep space. In an interview with Vulture, Weaver briefly recalled having a pleasant experience with Cameron on set. Which might’ve been a bit surprising given the director’s notorious temper in the past.
“Well, he was always so sweet to me during Aliens,” Weaver said. “And that was a tough picture for him, because the crew had this big Ridley Scott obsession, and it took him a while to get their attention as a filmmaker. But...

Director Fede Alvarez should now be in production on the new movie in the Alien franchise, a project which may or may not be called Alien Romulus. Originally designed to debut on Hulu, Disney recently announced an August 16, 2024 theatrical release date for the movie, which bodes well for its quality. So as a filmmaker who’s known for moments of brutal, cringe-inducing violence works to bring the Xenomorphs back to our screens, we decided it was time to put together an article that keeps track of Everything We Know About Fede Alvarez’s New Alien Movie.
(Working?) Title
First, we have to address whether or not Alien: Romulus is really the movie’s title. The fact is, we don’t know. It could very well be a working title or a codename title that will end up being changed down the line. The first time we ever saw the Alien: Romulus...
