Everything’s ready for the big game this Sunday: treats, poop bags, pee pads and all. No, not that game. The Puppy Bowl is back again for its 20th year, featuring sports’ most revered face-off between Team Ruff and Team Fluff.
It takes a small village to pull off the match-up, with 120 crew members and 132 volunteers, including representatives from animal shelters. “Puppy Bowl Xx” features 131 puppy players from 73 different rescues.
And all those pups require quite a bit of tender loving care during the multi-day shoot in Glen Falls, N.Y. This year’s game used 600 pee pads, 200 toys, 30 water bowls, 10 bags of treats and 200 poop bags.
At the heart of the action is ruff-eree Dan Schachner, who’s had the cutest gig in show business for the last 13 years. He can’t believe how much the annual event has grown during that time. “The amount of adoptable puppies we...

Dan Schachner has had the cutest gig in showbusiness for 12 years. As the ruff-eree of Animal Planet’s annual “Puppy Bowl,” he’s tasked with running the show as hundreds of doggy players compete for the coveted Lombarky Trophy.
When Team Ruff and Team Fluff take the field, he’s there for all the touchdowns, field goals and, yes, potty accidents. This year’s event boasts a 100 adoption rate — all 122 pup players have already found their forever homes. Fan-favorite elements will return to the show, including the puppy cheer squad, the water-bowl cam, the slo-mo camera and the end zone pylon cams to catch all the puppy vs. puppy action.
“Puppy Bowl Xix” premieres Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Et/ 11 a.m. Pt and is simulcast across Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, TBS, discovery+ and HBO Max. Schachner sat down with Variety to reflect on his years of hosting and to tease this year’s event.

Exclusive: Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to take Puppy Bowl to another level as a live television event by simulcasting it across linear networks and streaming platforms from both sides of the merged company.
In its first post-merger edition, Puppy Bowl will run on its home network, Animal Planet, where it has been a staple for 19 years, as well as on TBS, the unscripted-leaning brand of the TNets, Discovery Channel as well as soon-to-be-combined Discovery+ and HBO Max.
Last year, Puppy Bowl Xviii streamed on Discovery+ in addition to its Animal Planet run; the event’s footprint has been vastly expanded this year by adding networks, TBS and Discovery, as well as a streamer, HBO Max, with wider reach.
“The puppies are taking over, and the epic battle between Ruff and Fluff is now too big for one network,” the promo for the simulcast says. (You can watch it above.

When Animal Planet first announced details for its 2021 Puppy Bowl, it started the discussion with, “We need puppies now more than ever.” After a year that included various levels of stay-at-home orders amid a global pandemic, the shutdown of productions and the postponement or cancellation of major live events — from concerts to sports — cries for social justice and police reform, and an extremely contentious presidential election, truer words may have never been written.
Producing the annual Super Bowl counterprogramming event did not come without adjustments, though — not only to make sure this year’s was “bigger, better, more dramatic” than ever before, says Animal Planet’s senior vice president of production, Erin Wanner, but also to keep the trainers, shelter representatives, celebrities and crew safe amid the ongoing pandemic. Perhaps serendipitously, some of the changes that Covid required ended up raising the bar for the quality and quantity of content the Puppy Bowl could deliver.

Rooting for the Baltimore Ravens? Hoping the San Francisco 49ers win big? Well, here's something we can all root for: puppies. Puppies chasing balls. Puppies chasing each other. Puppies captured chasing balls and each other in slow-motion. (Okay, enough said.) If it's not the biggest game of the day, the Puppy Bowl IX, paws down, is certainly the most fur-ocious. But it gets even sweeter: The pigskin-loving pooches are all rescues. In case you (and your four-legged friends) missed all the paw-dorable action, we're bringing you the view from the field. The Super Bowl isn’t the only big game on Sunday. Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl IX premieres at 3 p.m. Et, and the hedgehog cheerleaders and aren’t the only new additions. There’s more cameras than ever before — in the puppy hot tub and embedded in the chew toys. For the second year, actor and voice-over artist Dan Schachner (who voices promos for Showtime’s Shameless) suited up as The Ref. How does one get this job, and what does it entail? We asked him.

Humans aren't the only ones playing football this Sunday. Puppies were getting in on the action, too. Animal Planet's 8th annual Puppy Bowl took place over the weekend and in this game, everyone came out a winner.
According to Puppy Bowl referee Dan Schachner, "the rules are a little looser than your regular NFL game."
Puppies weren't alone in the Animal Planet Stadium. This year also featured a kitten half time show, a tweeting bird and a pig pep squad.
The puppies and kittens participating in Puppy Bowl come from shelters listed on the Animal Planet website. The Humane Society estimates that about 4 million dogs and cats without a home are euthanized each year in the U.S. alone. If you want to adopt an animal in need, visit Petfinder.com or the Aspca website to learn more.
