Margaret Thatcher is a force to be reckoned with on season four of The Crown. Played by Gillian Anderson, the Thatcher we see in the show is notorious for her bouffant and stoicism. But like many historical series, some of the events are dramatized or fictionalized altogether. After watching The Crown, you're probably wondering how accurate its portrayal of Margaret Thatcher is. The woman who was James Callaghan's successor and served as Britain's prime minister from 1979 to 1990 seemed to have lived a life of excitement and controversy. Some questions from fans include whether or not Thatcher was a feminist, what her relationship to Queen Elizabeth was like, and what she was like as a mother.

Gillian Anderson is a delight.
The actress has played many beloved characters over the years, but the role of Maggie Thatcher is poised to be a big change for her.
With a steely voice and a piercing stare, Thatcher takes center stage in the latest trailer for The Crown Season 4.
Thatcher and Olivia Colman's Queen Elizabeth II chat in the trailer, but it's clear things are not going well between them.
But Queen Elizabeth does defend Margaret when Prince Philip balks at the idea of two women running the country.
“Perhaps that’s precisely what this country needs.”
"It could be said that they are two very similar women, born only months apart," says writer and executive producer Peter Morgan.
"They are very much defined by the Second World War, by a sense of a sense of frugality, hard work, commitment, Christianity and so much more. It was a...

Two women running Britain, “perhaps that is precisely what this country needs,” Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman) says in a new trailer for the fourth season of “The Crown.”
But, as anyone with an understanding of U.K. history knows, it is anything but smooth sailing when Margaret Thatcher (played here by Gillian Anderson) becomes Prime Minister.
“My goal is to change this country from being dependent to self-reliant, and I think in that I am succeeding,” Anderson’s Thatcher says in the trailer, which you can watch above. However, this sentiment is followed by the mention of “joblessness, recession and crises” that are occurring, as well as the enemies “left, right and center” she may be making.

Netflix dropped the trailer for the fourth season of “The Crown” Thursday, switching fans’ attention from the eagerly anticipated introduction of Princess Diana (played by Emma Corrin) to the arrival of Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of Britain’s formidable first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher.
And when the Iron Lady reports for duty, she comes ready to challenge Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman) in more ways than the monarch seems to have expected.

The fourth season of Peter Morgan’s Netflix royal family drama picks up in the late 1970s. Here is the official description:

After 13 series, there have now been more than enough I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! winners to fill up their own all-star series.
They all had to endure creepy crawlies, tough Bushtucker Trials and mockery by Ant & Dec, but they all won the hearts of the nation for a couple of weeks.
Some of them may have fallen from grace since, while some have soared up the UK fame ranks. But who were the best champions from their respective series? Here's our just-for-fun, don't-take-it-too-seriously Top 13.
13. Carol Thatcher - Series 5 (2005)
Potentially the most surprising winner of the lot, no-one could have guessed that Margaret Thatcher's daughter would have been voted the nation's favourite.
Viewers were won over by how involved she was in the tasks, her no-nonsense attitude, and the fact that she was only up against Sid Owen and Cannon & Ball.

Olivia Colman's should be a familiar face to any fan of British comedy, particularly the work of David Mitchell and Robert Webb, whom Colman worked with on their sketch show "That Mitchell and Webb Look" and on sitcom "Peep Show," playing Sophie Chapman, the coworker, object of lust and eventual long-suffering girlfriend of Mitchell's Mark Corrigan. While Colman's still doing funny stuff -- she plays the supportive spouse of Tom Hollander's floundering inner-city vicar Adam Smallbone in "Rev." -- the past few years have found her proving her talent for drama in a series of wrenching roles. She won multiple awards as battered wife Hannah in Paddy Considine's 2011 directorial debut "Tyrannosaur," acted alongside Meryl Streep as Carol Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" and earlier this year received BAFTAs for both her parts in BBC anthology series "Accused" and Olympics mockumentary "Twenty Twelve." With Run, a bleak new TV series, about to start, the actor talks about playing downtrodden women, messing up on stage and being called 'divinely gifted' by Meryl Streep
Olivia Colman is insufferable. We've been sitting for an hour on the balcony of the Ritzy cinema in south London and she's given me nothing but unremitting cheeriness. Doesn't she realise I need dirt, self-disgust and something really vile about working with Rose Byrne on I Give it a Year and/or Bill Murray on Hyde Park on the Hudson? She's even managed to be positive about the view. "Look at those gorgeous trees," she says of the espalliered Parisian-style Brixton avenue below. "How do they make those trees square?" Vigorous and regular pruning, no doubt, I reply glumly. "Lovely aren't they, though," she says, with that sunny smile that bewitched viewers when she won two Baftas in May.

Former Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87 following a stroke, according to her spokesman.
Lord Bell said: “It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning.”
She was British prime minister from 1979 to 1990 – the first (and only so far) female to rise to the post, and sparked controversy with some infamous policies that made her a figure of occasionally bilious hatred from political opponents and their followers.
Born Margaret Roberts, she became the Conservative MP for Finchley in 1959, and stayed in a political role until she retired from the Commons in 1992. During that time, she took on the role of education secretary, before successfully challenging Edward Heath for her party’s leadership in 1975, and subsequently winning general elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987.

When the Soviet media first branded Margaret Thatcher "Iron Lady" in 1976, she was delighted. It's a name that perfectly encapsulates the raw nerve and verve of one of the most powerful women in history, who served as England's Prime Minister for three terms and stood her ground during the Falklands War. She is played to uncanny effect by Oscar winner Meryl Streep in the biopic "The Iron Lady" (on DVD and Blu-ray today).
Iron Man, aka Tony Stark, was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck in 1963 for Marvel Comics, and in 2008 became a movie franchise to be reckoned with. Robert Downey Jr. portrays the superhero as a healthy mix of Howard Hughes, James Bond and, well, Robert Downey Jr., and will continue doing so in this summer's team-up extravaganza "The Avengers."
Both Iron Man and the Iron Lady are highly controversial figures in their own way, perfect to battle each other.

Meryl Streep hit the blue carpet last night (January 4) for the European premiere of The Iron Lady in London. The actress, who plays former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has been tipped to win her third Oscar for the political biopic. Jim Broadbent stars as Thatcher's husband Denis, while Tyrannosaur's Olivia Colman is her daughter Carol Thatcher. The trio were joined (more)...

Director Phyllida Lloyd has revealed that Margaret Thatcher's family turned down an invitation to an early viewing of the biopic
Margaret Thatcher's family refused an invitation to see The Iron Lady, the biopic of the former prime minister, from the film's director, Phyllida Lloyd.
Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 programme World at One, Lloyd revealed that the film-makers had invited the Thatcher family to an early viewing of the finished film, but had been turned down.
"They were the first people we invited to see the finished film," said Lloyd. "They didn't take up our offer … so we are not actually sure whether they have seen it or not."
Lloyd defended The Iron Lady's controversial portrayal of Thatcher by asserting that much of the film was "pure imagination". The Thatcher family's lack of involvement in the film was underscored by the fact that the script, by Sex Traffic writer Abi Morgan,...

Liz Hoggard and Peter Lilley debate the accuracy of Meryl Streep's film portrayal of Margaret Thatcher
Liz Hoggard, author and journalist
The Iron Lady is not a hagiography. But nor is it a political biopic. The film is filtered through Margaret Thatcher's consciousness, from her 10-year bid to win her first parliamentary seat to the sheer physical assault of entering the macho House of Commons. It's very much her story. The film's director Phyllida Lloyd has described the treatment as operatic. We see a woman who has sacrificed everything for politics. Who can barely live in the real world when the party dismisses her. For Lloyd (a veteran theatre director), her story is like a female King Lear.
But for me it is too soon – too dangerous – for such an abstract treatment of recent events. Meryl Streep inevitably makes Maggie a radiant figure – even I found myself cheering...

The Weinstein Company A scene from “The Iron Lady”
Say the name Margaret Thatcher and you’re likely to get two opposing responses, depending on the political stripes of the person you’re talking to. Beloved by conservatives for standing up to Communism and deregulating the private sector, deplored by by the left for weakening unions and instituting unpopular tax policies, Thatcher is still a lightning rod for heated discussion about her legacy.

Meryl Streep has spoken of how her admiration for Lady Margaret Thatcher grew as she made a film about Britain's former prime minister.
There has been praise - and talk of an Oscar win - for Streep's role in The Iron Lady, although the controversial movie has drawn criticism from the ex-Tory party leader's former colleagues.
The actress says making the film has given her greater respect for a woman who succeeded against overwhelming odds.
"The more I learned, the more my view of her changed. Wherever you stand on her policies, and many people didn't like her, the scale of her influence and the fact that she got things done was extraordinary," she told the Radio Times.
"And the mental, physical, spiritual energy that it took to live every one of those days as head of the government was phenomenal. It's really humbling to consider that she was at 10 Downing Street for 10-and-a-half years.

Oscar-winner and Hollywood liberal says playing former Pm in The Iron Lady has made her see the woman behind the politics
She is firmly a part of Hollywood's liberal elite, who describes herself as part of "the Left", but Meryl Streep has confessed developing a strong admiration for Margaret Thatcher after playing her in a film.
Streep – who is in the running for her third Oscar for her role in The Iron Lady – said playing the role had given her a greater respect for a woman who succeeded in a male-dominated world.
"I was aware of her very early on and, even though her policies were not popular, to say the least, in my circles, people were kind of thrilled that a woman had become leader," she told the Radio Times.
"When I was in college the professions open to women were so few – there were very few women that went to law school,...

British actress Olivia Colman speaks softly and with great modesty but perhaps that's wise. Her talent speaks loudly on its own behalf by way of ntroduction. Though British audiences have embraced her comic talent for years now, international audiences are just now getting to know her as a dramatic force. She's utterly devastating as a meek Christian shop owner in the violent drama Tyrannosaur. The film, directed by the actor Paddy Considine (In America), is gathering a small but very vocal fanbase who think Colman really ought to have a Best Actress nomination in her very near future. Later this month, she'll be onscreen again as Carol Thatcher daughter of The Iron Lady, but even if you exited the first movie only to immediately enter the latter, you'll scarcely recognize her from one film to the next.

More images from the Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady have emerged today showing off two of the star names in their Tory garb.
We’ve already seen Meryl Streep’s uncanny Maggie impression and she has captured the chilling and composed calmness of the infamous Prime Minister and now we have our first look at Richard E. Grant as Michael Hestletine and Anthony Head as Geoffrey Howe.
It’s a little unnerving to see these images from The Daily Mail (of course) but I still can’t wait to see Phyllida Lloyd’s film, not least for the ensemble cast (which has Tyrannosaur’s Olivia Colman as Carol Thatcher) but also becuase Abi Morgan’s screenplay for Shame was fantastic and I can’t wait to see what she’ll make of this.
Pics ahoy,...

Your chance to buy a Stallone-stamped red carpet; Streep is in the frame to play Thatcher; and transatlantic problems with 'the world's biggest bender'
Glamour footprint
You can own the ground Sylvester Stallone walked on. The Hollywood action legend will be in Leicester Square next month for the premiere of his new film The Expendables, joined by Jason Statham and Jet Li. Other action Gods such as Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis are rumoured to be joining them on the red carpet — a patch of which you, dear Trash reader, can then purchase. Can you imagine… it would be like having a rock from Mount Olympus in your back garden. The 10x10ft section of carpet will be taken from just in front of the cinema, where the stars gather for their photo calls, and you even get to own the pics of the actors posing on your patch.

Kim Woodburn has claimed that she will "pee" near her bed like former I'm A Celebrity winner Carol Thatcher. In 2005, Thatcher had to be warned by producers after she was caught by infra-red cameras urinating near her hammock. Speaking about Thatcher's antics, the How Clean Is Your House? presenter said: "I liked Carol Thatcher; I thought she was a hoot. And when she peed over the side of the bed - I think I will be peeing over the side. "I'm not getting out of bed at night in the dark with spiders dragging my knickers off. There could be anything out there. I'm going to pee wherever I can. If anyone has a go at me I will say I'm peeing (more)...

How Clean Is Your House? star Kim Woodburn is unfazed about her impending trip to the jungle after experiencing far worse places in her hit TV show. The former cleaner even admits she will clean out the dreaded ‘dunny’.
Kim says: “I have to say to you that the jungle cannot be as dirty as some of the houses I have been in. Bless their souls, but they are dreadful. There have been so many bad ones that I have seen in my six years.
“I don’t mind changing the toilet every day; it doesn’t bother me in the least. I have put my hands on faeces in houses and there is none of that with the camp toilet. I’ve seen them do it – unscrew, take the lid off, slam it down as quickly as you can, and put the fresh one in. It is not hard labour.

The BBC is facing calls to sack Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke over the racist comment he made during training. Yesterday, the professional dancer made a public apology after it emerged that he had called his celebrity partner Laila Rouass a "P**i". It is believed that he made the comment after the actress had a spray tan. Du Beke also allegedly joked that Rouass could be a "terrorist" after hearing about her Moroccan heritage last month. Anti-racism groups have now claimed that the star should be dropped from the ballroom series. The BBC has previously axed Carol Thatcher from The One Show after she referred to a black tennis player as a "golliwog" backstage. Nick Lowles, from Hope Not Hate and Searchlight, told The Mirror: "This is more serious than the Thatcher incident. It is the second time such language has (more)...

The controversy surrounding Carol Thatcher's axing from The One Show brought in the programme's second best ever ratings yesterday (Thursday). The daily magazine show, fronted by Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, drew a massive 6.07m (26.3%) for BBC One in the half hour from 7pm. It rivalled ITV1's Emmerdale, which had 7.22m (31.3%) over the same period. EastEnders followed at 7.30pm with 9.84m (40.3%), the day's best numbers on any channel. At 8pm, BBC Two's MasterChef improved to a strong 4.4m (17.5%) for the hour, helping the channel beat its terrestrial sibling BBC One. Comedy Life Of Riley had 4.23m (17.1%) in the first half of the hour, then The Green Green Grass kept 3.93m (15.4%) until 9pm. ITV1 won the hour with 5.03m (20%) for The Bill, while on Channel 4, a new series of 10 Years Younger (more)...

London -- More than 2,000 complaints have flooded into the BBC over its decision to drop presenter Carol Thatcher for describing a black tennis player as "a golliwog" in an off-air conversation.
The BBC said it had logged 2,200 complaints about the move and only 60 calls and e-mails in support of the action, which was taken after the comment was made in the Green Room of BBC1 evening magazine show "The One Show."
But BBC1 controller Jay Hunt has strongly defended the BBC's decision saying that Thatcher had "repeatedly" been asked to issue a full apology for the offense but had refused.
Speaking on BBC Radio, Hunt said Thatcher had referred to a black tennis player as "a golliwog" in front of 12 people including the show's other presenters and guests.

London -- The BBC has dropped presenter Carol Thatcher from nightly magazine show "The One Show" after she referred to an unnamed black tennis player as a "golliwog" off air, during the filming of the show.
The daughter of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher made the comment in a backstage conversation with fellow presenter Adrian Chiles and comedian Jo Brand in front of other production staff, her spokeswoman has confirmed, but intended the matter to be "a joke."
"She made a light aside about this tennis player and his similarity to the golliwog on the jam pot when she was growing up," Thatcher's spokeswoman told the Times newspaper.
"There's no way, obviously, that she would condone any racist comment -- we would refute that entirely. It would not be in her nature to do anything like that."

Carol Thatcher will no longer appear on The One Show after she referred to a tennis player as a "golliwog".
