Produced by Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment, in association with GroupM Motion Entertainment, the documentary tells the true story of the 761st Tank Battalion, the first Black tank unit to serve in combat during WWII, and the major battles they faced both overseas while in combat and back home in the United States.
Better known as the first Black Panthers, this was the only Black tank unit to see combat in World War II. Formed in the spring of 1942, the 761st played a significant role in military operations during the war against Nazi Germany. However, while the majority Black battalion was fighting one battle overseas, they were simultaneously fighting another in their home country – against racism, segregation, and inequality. Over three seasons of National Geographic’s docuseries The Story of God, the filmmaking team and host Morgan Freeman have traveled widely, exploring faith traditions around the world. But there’s some parts of the globe they generally avoid—anywhere with arctic temperatures.
“I’m allergic to it,” the Oscar-winning actor confesses. “That’s me and cold. I don’t do it.”
That prohibition notwithstanding, Freeman and fellow executive producers Lori McCreary and James Younger have managed to cover a lot of ground, from the Vatican, to Paris, London, the Judaean desert, Turkey, India and Kathmandu, and Nepal (in summertime), among many other destinations. Their quest is seeing how divine beliefs manifest themselves across different cultures.
“My curiosity about God goes way back,” Freeman explained Wednesday night at a special screening of the first episode of Season 3 at Television Academy headquarters in North Hollywood. “Amazing, you look at this, how...

Season 3 of National Geographic Channel’s The Story of God follows Morgan Freeman as he travels to cities deemed the world’s holiest, and speak with religious leaders, scientists, historians and archaeologists.
At TCA, series producers said they faced greatest push-back while trying to shoot in some of these holiest of places.
“We don’t have a good track record in the Holy Land,” Ep James Younger told TV critics.
That includes getting tossed from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, they reported. They also reported getting a lousy reception in Bethlehem. In one instance, a religious figure held a mobile phone making loud noises in order to wreck their filming. Other holy folk favored throwing keys to the ground to ruin their footage.
The panelists also got asked to explain those who “profess to be people of faith” but support President Donald Trump,...

Morgan Freeman's series Through the Wormhole may have gained pop-culture traction last year when the famously satin-voiced actor sucked down helium, but season 2 of the Science Channel show isn't afraid to get serious.
And, despite the signature twinkle in Freeman's eyes during the opening moments of the season's first episode, "Are We Bigots?" – which People has obtained exclusively – the premiere is unflinching in its acknowledgment of people's ingrained biases.
Never was the relevance of the topic more clear than, during the episode's development, when the country erupted over the shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri,...
