The 13-member Brockhampton collective are usually described as a pan-racial, non-heteronormative, self-proclaimed “boy band,” a rap group born on the internet and destined for pop domination. All of this obscures what Brockhampton truly is: a savvy, decent alternative rap group who understands the modern cyber-grind. Their output is staggering, a perfect model for the era of content: In two years they’ve released five albums, 20+ music videos, and have starred on their own Viceland TV show. Fifth album Ginger is more proof that they have absorbed all the Very Now...

The hardest-working decade of 2018? That’s easy: the Nineties. The whole concept of the Nineties continues to haunt the pop imagination, epitomizing everything our sorry excuse for a decade fails to be. Let’s face it, the “teens” never became a thing, just like the “zeroes” didn’t. So as we head into the final year of this decade which is bizarrely not one, we look back to the last one that counted. Decades are more popular than ever these days, as a useful shorthand for how culture changes over time.

Few producers and songwriters have a more impressive resume than Jermaine Dupri. When Kriss Kross’ “Jump” topped the Hot 100 in 1992, Dupri became the youngest studio-wiz in history to craft a Number One hit. That gave him the chance to helm his own label, So So Def, which he used to help break acts throughout the Nineties, including Xscape, Jagged Edge and Anthony Hamilton. He also broke other labels’ acts with his writing and production: Usher owes his first major hit — and eight subsequent ones — to Dupri. Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together,...

Though he may not yet have the sort of singles chart history to back it up, there’s no doubt that Travis Scott is a star. His live shows rarely fail to drop jaws with their energy, opulence, and unruliness. He recently had a baby with the Kardashian clan’s most au courant scion. His signature line of Nikes sparked a mob scene when they were released earlier this summer; these days even a scuffed-up used pair will set you back a few hundred dollars. And though there have been numerous delays in the two years since the release of his last solo album, “Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight,” when a giant gold likeness of the rapper’s head appeared atop L.A.’s Amoeba Music last month, no one under the age of 30 was confused about what it meant.

The Bet Awards drew some 4.3 million viewers across eight Viacom networks to its June 24 broadcast, landing the No. 1 cable awards show spot for the fourth consecutive year. Held at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, the show featured performances by Migos, Nicki Minaj, Jay Rock, Janelle Monae and Meek Mill with Miguel. During the broadcast, the Bet Awards dominated Twitter with 9 out of the top 10 trending topics. Social media engagement peaked during Meek Mill’s performance with Miguel.
The 18th edition of the Bet Awards followed the annual weekend-long Bet Experience, which brought together artists, sports stars, industry professionals and fans to events all over the city. At last March’s Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys, the presentation of the year’s best rap recording award was accompanied by a look back to a pivotal moment of the country’s hip-hop history. Storied Toronto rap figures Kardinal Offishall (pictured below), Choclair, Red1, Checkmate, Misfit and Thrust flooded the stage to present the award, and ended up performing an impromptu rendition of their 1998 single “Northern Touch,” which served as a statement of purpose for Toronto’s hip-hop community after years of resistance from Canadian radio programmers and general indifference from American listeners. For a city that has spent the better part of the last decade as one of hip-hop’s global hotspots, it was a welcome reminder that the Toronto’s history goes back much further than that.

In celebration of the success of his acclaimed drama “Moonlight,” Barry Jenkins has released an extended chopped-and-screwed soundtrack that includes a total of 26 remixed songs from the film, including Beyonce and Jay-z’s “Shining,” Aretha Franklin’s “One Step Ahead,” Goodie Mob’s “Cell Therapy” and a version of “Purple Haze” featuring Lloyd.
To create the mix, the filmmaker worked with Og Ron C and the Chopstars, who gave the tracks their chopped-and-screwed treatment. It’s a remixing style created by Houston’s DJ Screw in the 90’s — the sound is accomplished by slowing the tempo of the music down. The album was produced by DJ Candlestick and DJ Slim K.

To mark the occasion, Og Ron C and the Chopstars have given the film’s musical stylings a chopped-and-slopped remix. “Purple Moonlight” takes four pieces from the acclaimed drama’s soundtrack, like Aretha Franklin’s “One Step Ahead” and Goodie Mob’s “Cell Therapy,” and reinvents them. When we shared a stream of Nicholas Britell‘s brilliant score for Moonlight last fall, we remarked how Barry Jenkins himself has said he wrote the script to a slowed-down remix of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. While you can see the traces of that influence in the aural landscape of the film, Og Ron C and The Chopstars have taken the next logical step and created a chopped and screwed remix album, featuring both compositions from the soundtrack, as well as songs that influenced its creation.

Since its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this year, Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” has garnered widespread critical acclaim and has grossed over $3 million. Though its performances and Jenkins’ direction have received much attention, the film’s score and soundtrack are worthy of notice as well. Cee Lo Green's TBS show "The Good Life" is dead now, after the network pulled the plug on a second season. The move comes amid outrage over the singer's controversial statements on Twitter this weekend. Rewinding a bit, Green faced sexual assault charges back in 2012; in August, he pleaded no contest to a felony stemming from those charges, for furnishing a Schedule 1 Substance to a woman. The initial complaint originated with a woman who alleged the Gnarls Barkley/Goodie Mob member slipped ecstasy into her drink, she was unconscious and then woke up naked in bed with him. Prosecutors later dropped the sexual assault charges due to insufficient evidence, though clearing the way for the drug charge. Green was sentenced to three years probation and 45 days of community service. Then, yesterday, Green took to his Twitter to share his thoughts on rape. "if someone is passed out they're not even With you consciously!

The Voice coach turned up at the Television Critics Association’s semiannual tour Friday to peddle his new, TBS “reality-based” show, appropriately titled CeeLo’s Goodie Life. In his 20 minutes or so before the press, the dynamic multi-hyphenate suggested that the series would offer viewers a more authentic look at him and his hip-hop group, Goodie Mob. "I didn’t want to do another reality show. I wanted to do something innovative and cutting edge,” he told reporters, noting that he's inspired by vehicles like Larry David's semi-autobiographical HBO entry.

That's a wrap for Cee Lo Green on The Voice, as his third and final contestant was sent home last night in as many weeks of viewer voting.
After circling the drain but being instantly saved by America last week, Caroline Pennell could no longer escape her fate. Apparently the17-year-old drab-to-fab starlet's rendition of Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over" didn't impress viewers. And neither did Ray Boudreaux from Blake Shelton's team, who also got eliminated.

The fest opens on the 20th with the documentary More Than the Rainbow, a profile of Matt Weber, an NYC cab driver who moonlights as an art photographer. The film is directed by Dan Wechsler.
Other docs screening at the fest include the uplifting tale of A Clown’s Recovery, directed by Matthew Broomfield; the sports drama of One Wall: Kings of Coney Island, directed by Joe Glickman; the profile of a Coney Island legend in The Commander in Chief, directed by Jim McDonnell; the struggle of Bending Steel, directed by Dave Carroll; and World Circus, directed by Angela Snow.

As fans anticipate the release of Goodie Mob’s first joint album since 1999’s “World Party” later this month, many are also questioning the motive behind the group’s 14-year hiatus.
Yesterday (August 6), during an appearance on HuffPost Live, the hip hop quartet -- consisting of CeeLo Green, Big Gipp, Khujo and T-Mo -- talked about their latest “milestone achievement,” recording “Age Against the Machine.” Furthermore, they apologized to fans for the long wait.
“What can I say, we had 14 year hiatus. But we all had individual success, here and there,” Green admitted. “I’ve gone on to do a couple different things... But what we’re doing is kind of bringing it all back home. And I’m sorry that it’s taken this long. We didn’t mean to be as preoccupied as we ended up being.”

CeeLo Green is officially back on "The Voice" for the show's fifth season, but he's still mulling over what kind of creature will accompany him.
CeeLo's previous mascots have included Purrfect, the fluffy white cat, and Lady, the pink Moluccan cockatoo. So what critter is next for Team CeeLo?
He told HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill that he has "been really taking suggestions." CeeLo does, however, know that the next mascot will promote animal welfare, just like Purrfect, who was a rescue cat, and Lady, who represents an endangered species of bird.
"I got a little gang of animals. I've adopted a rescue animal unit and I've made them partners," CeeLo said on HuffPost Live. "It helps facilitate and fund their philanthropy."
While CeeLo's next mascot is still a mystery, there is one animal that certainly won't be making it to the "Voice" stage.

Last year, Cee Lo Green reunited with his original music project, Atlanta hip-hop crew Goodie Mob, and now it looks like there's more action afoot. Janelle Monae jumped in on the new single "Special Education," a song that -- despite its title and the ominous, mysterious sound -- is quite serious. The quartet take turns versing about sameness and peer pressure, plus their self-discoveries of growing up or thinking "different" and turning out to be quite "special." Hence the name. Monae handles all singing duties, allowing Green to get back to rapping. I especially like the opening bars, where Gm outline...

Goodie Mob is back with a new single.
The Southern hip-hop group released "Special Education" on Tuesday, a collaboration with Janelle Monáe. The 27-year-old singer takes the hook for the track, lending her vocals to the Atlanta vibe Goodie Mob is known for -- take a listen above.
Cee-Lo's distinctive voice can be heard halfway through the track, rapping "Scientists stood around in silence as I was being born / was I quote unquote special, or was there something wrong? / My skin was black, my heart was gold, and my tongue was silver / and the fact that I could talk already, that was a thriller."
Made up of rappers Cee-Lo, Big Gipp, Khujo, and T-Mo, Goodie Mob will be releasing a new album on August 27, Cee-Lo announced this week. The forthcoming "Age Against the Machine" album will be the group's first studio album with all four members since 1999 when "World Party" hit stores.

In this week's totally non-essential news, singer Cee Lo Green has signed a deal for a six-episode reality series for TBS, to be called The Cee Lo Life (Or as I think the show should be called, Living a 4 Foot 5 Life in a Six Foot World, but that’s me). The show will chronicle his life along with his Goodie Mob group mates - Big Gipp, Khujo and T-Mo - as they work on their new long-awaited hip-hop album. According to Michael Wright, who is the head of head of programming for TBS: "With his distinctive voice, winning personality and remarkable ability to tap into a wide range of musical styles, Cee Lo Green has risen to the top of the music industry… (and...

It was bound to happen eventually, and The Voice will go its first major judging shakeup for next season, it's been announced. Two of its most memorable faces, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will be taking season 4 off in order to spend more time with their families. Whoops, I mean spend more time with their careers.
Aguilera has a comeback album called Lotus on the way, and Cee Lo is working on both a Christmas album and a new sitcom. In short, will be too busy for The Voice. They will, however, be back for season 5.
In the meanwhile however, NBC has wrangled up some talent to fill in for them. Sticking with the same demographics, Aguilera and Green will be replaced by Shakira and Usher. Though Levine and Shelton are sticking around, that may not always be the case as Blake in particular has complained about the show's...

Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will not be involved in the fourth cycle of "The Voice," NBC announced today. The two coaches will be replaced by R&B artist Usher and Grammy-winning songstress Shakira when the show returns for a fourth season in the spring.

The success of "The Voice" has prompted NBC to make it a year-round event. While Season 1 and Season 2 were mid-season series, and Season 3 is currently airing on Mondays and Tuesdays, Season 4 will launch as early as this winter.
Because of the larger time commitment, coaches Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo Green have decided to exit the show in Season 4 -- but don't worry, bromance fans. Blake Shelton and Adam Levine are sticking around to keep their banter going, and there will be some great artists filling in the blanks.
Taking the places of Aguilera and Green are Shakira and Usher. Executive producer Mark Burnett says that Aguilera, Green, and the rest of the judges are welcome to come and go from the show as they please to accommodate touring and recording schedules.
"Having award-winning artists as coaches means they need to be able to tour," Burnett says in a statement to EW.
